S eptember, for me, means starting to think about the holidays and gearing up for

four months of fun and activities. Let’s concentrate on September though and remember some VERY important dates that should be on your calendar.

September 5th is Cheese Pizza Day (I’m sure all the local pizza places will appreciate us for this), September 9th is Teddy Bear Day, September 13th is Positive Thinking Day (if you are not doing this everyday, you should), September 14th is National Cream Filled Donut Day (yes!), September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day and September 30th is National Mud Pack Day (hmmm). Many others as well. On a serious note, do take a moment on September 11th and on September 21st (National Peace Day). During these months, I will continue to work hard to produce an excellent

newsletter for you. Though I can do the job of putting a great product together, it is you that makes it worth reading. All the residents, governing entities, clubs, schools, organizations, charities and businesses  who contribute to this newsletter are who make the difference.

I thank you for your support and will continue to support you. Any new ideas or thoughts are always welcome. Remember, send in your photos, stories, announcements and events. The Hidden picture winner for the August issue is Penny Kauffman. The cover winner for this issue is Jessika Pascarella.

Changing Faces in the MP1 OfficeDawn Wetherby, MP1’s Office Manager since 2010, handed the reigns over to Heidi Brenner last month.

Dawn returned to Wiregrass Ranch High School to coach cheerleading and took a position as an Instructional Assistant.

“My 2 years here at MP1 have been wonder-ful.  Being a resident of MP1 from 1997, I have enjoyed meeting my fellow residents and become extremely proud of what the Board has accom-plished on behalf of our residents.  I am grateful to call myself a resident of MP1.”

Although we are sad to say goodbye to Dawn, we are excited to welcome Heidi Brenner. A mother of 4, Heidi has been a MP1 resident since 1996. Be sure to introduce yourself next time you’re at the fitness center!

May 22nd, 2006 Bruster’s Ice Cream, at 20303 Bruce B. Downs Blvd in New

Tampa, opened its doors for their first day of business. It is a day that will live in infamy for the Provenzano family, owners and operators of the local franchise. They have dedicated themselves not only to providing the area a superior ice cream product that is made fresh daily in their store, but also striving to provide great customer service. General Manager, Matt Provenzano, takes much pride in training its staff essential customer service skills that each employee will take with them. “I feel I have a chance to impact these kids and prepare them for their vocational futures. Training not only includes scooping ice cream, but also learning to work as part of a team, taking initiative, interacting with customers, emphasizing the importance of stamping their individual attributes to the

environment of the store, and most of all having fun.” Bruster’s must be doing something right. Not only in having a top- notch product and staff, but they have been able to evolve over that period of time. Provenzano emphasizes that its vendor events and catering business has grown each month. “Our calendar is active with corporate catering events and we have many regular accounts that consistently hire us back.” Give them a try and you will be begging for more. Bruster’s has also been very successful at obtaining business partnerships. Currently, Bruster’s serves its ice cream at four other venues. Organic Life Coffee House uses Bruster’s Ice Cream for its shakes and frappuccinos. Taste of Boston and You do The Dishes has six to eight fresh flavors being served at any time. Along with Cobb Theatres at the Groves, who now serve 8 delicious

Bruster’s Ice Cream flavors to its patrons. Victor Goitia, Cobb General Manager, says, “We have gotten great feedback from your ice cream.” Six years in and Bruster’s is as busy as ever. If you haven’t had a chance to try it, the Provenzano family is sure you’ll be able to find at least one of the twenty-five flavors being served

worthy of a freshly made waffle cone. The Italian ice or sorbet are other popular choices. Look them up at brusters.com for a menu of all flavors, products and other company information. Like them on Facebook at brusters-tampa. Treat yourself today, you’ll be glad you did. v

Bill Snyder has resigned from his position as Property Manager after serving the District for over seven years. Meadow Pointe II would like to thank him for his time and effort he put in throughout his tenure. Bill was instrumental in many capital projects, along with day to day operations while serving the District. He will be greatly missed and we wish him the best in the future.

Currently David Starkey is the “Acting Property Manager” and is handling all responsibilities related to the position. He has been with Meadow Pointe II since September 2011, and was provided with extensive training by Mr. Snyder. He was formerly

employed by Meadow Pointe I for six years in a variety of positions, while also volunteering to organize clubs such as the Meadow Pointe’s Bowling & Basketball Leagues. He is currently a resident of Meadow Pointe III and has deep roots throughout the community.

If you have any questions or concerns in regard to the Meadow Pointe II community, please contact him at the Clubhouse. Please leave a message if he is unavailable.

Our first resident council meeting was held on August 8, 2012. It was not well attended. Those that were there expressed their concerns.

Have you ever wondered why we don’t have any activities at Meadow Pointe II. An active resi-dent council can improve on making Meadow Pointe II a more active community. Get involved and come to the next resident council meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of September (11th). We need your help, join us. Volunteer to represent your village. The 2012 Republican National Convention drew a lot of attention and the Tampa Bay area was on center stage. Aasif Mandvi,

a correspondent from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, was recently in the Arbors of Meadow Pointe filming part of a bit at his family’s home. The segment aired during the week of the RNC.

The segment included a conversation Aasif had with his father, Hakim, regarding his childhood home and a “tour” of the Tampa he used to know. Shabana (sister), Jose (brother-in-law) and Anisa (neice) Churruca were thrilled to share their home with Aasif and the film crew. v

Wesley Chapel is a fast growing commu-nity and churches have

taken notice. New churches have started in our area to respond to the rapid growth. NorthBridge Church celebrated its one year anniversary August 19th. They meet each Sunday morning at 10 am at John Long Middle School, and the church welcomes everyone.

Meeting in a middle school cafeteria may look different from what people think of as church. The goal of NorthBridge is to reach people and families who may not have attended a church in a while, or possibly ever. NorthBridge’s hope is that their location and relaxed style will make those who visit feel welcome. NorthBridge Church is also striving to reflect our community through their diversity. The people who call NorthBridge Church home do not fit any one category. They are old, young, and financially and ethnically diverse. They want to relate to the world around them, while staying true to the teachings of the Bible.

Serving the community and making a positive impact on our neighbors is a strong desire of NorthBridge Church. This past Spring Break the church hosted a free community wide sports and art camp and family picnic. The

congregation is looking forward to serving the community again this October through LoveLoud projects. Actions speak louder than words so they will put their care and concern for the community into action.

During the weekend of October 13th the church will participate in several service projects. If you know of a family or organization that could benefit from a helping hand please contact Derwin Anderson, Lead Pastor at [email protected]. Projects will range from yard clean up to light construction. Another service project that NorthBridge is looking forward to this year is an opportunity to work through local schools to help feed families. By providing food each week to families that can use a helping hand, we are showing the community around us the love and concern that Jesus Christ has for each of us. If you are looking for a church family or just want to come and check them out, NorthBridge would love to welcome you this Sunday at 10! The services are held at John Long Middle School, 2025 Mansfield Boulevard, Wesley Chapel, FL 33543. Visit www.nbcwc.info for more information. v

It’s that time of the year again and soccer season is right around the corner for both the recreational

and competitive leagues. The Wesley Chapel Athletic Associations’ Wesley Chapel Soccer Club has started preparing for the 2012-2013 season and there are great things in store. One of the more notable changes will be new uniform and logo for the Club. The updated look will set our Club apart, as well as help unify the recreational and competitive leagues into a more cohesive club.

With the infusion of the competitive league’s training strategies into the recreational practices and through the support of competitive trainers we can elevate WCAA soccer to a higher level of competency. We will have a competitive trainer available to the recreational coaches for one practice per week.

In addition, the Club will also sponsor several coaching clinics that will give new and experienced coaches tips on running practices and better developing players ball handling skills. This training is free and it is a great opportunity for parents, who are interested in coaching, to gain insight from experienced nationally licensed trainers. Practices for the recreational league will begin the first week of November. Practice times and days will be determined by each coach. Games will be played each Saturday beginning December 1st throughFebruary 2nd with a break from December 23rd thru January 11th. There will also be a post-seasontournament February 9-10th. Registration for the recreational league started July 30th and ends September 29th, while TARSA started July 13th and ends September 18th.

Registration fills up quickly so make sure you go online now and register early to assure a spot for your child. We are holding player evaluations, which will be mandatory. There will be 5 days of evaluations starting October 1st - 5th. These evaluations only take about fifteen minutes and will be held at the Wesley District Park. Teams will be compiled by the league based on these evaluations. We always need coaches, please consider it. Without coaches we cannot run this league. If you areinterested in coaching a team please sign-up online as a volunteer when you register your son or daughter. We encourage you to register early so we will have a better idea of how many coaches we will have. For further information and program registration please visit our website at www.wesleychapelsoccerclub.com. v

2013 WOMEN OF DISTINCTION

Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) announces

an open call for nominations for its prestigious Women of Distinc-tion recognition. In addition to the Women of Distinction, the inaugu-ral Woman of Promise Award will be presented to a deserving young woman under the age of 35.

Women do not have to have been Girl Scouts to be nominated. Nomi-nations will be accepted through Monday, Sept. 10th; applications can be downloaded from the council’s website, www.gswcf.org/wod. Honorees will be announced in October.

Those selected as honorees are women whose accomplishments

make them positive role models who inspire girls to achieve their own goals and dreams. They exemplify the Girl Scout Promise and Law through ethical leader-ship and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of their fellow citizens through community service.

Those selected as a 2013 Woman of Distinction and the Woman of Promise will be honored at a the 12th annual WOD luncheon Tuesday, March 19th, 2013 at A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa. This event honors women who have achieved success in their chosen fields and who serve as role models for girls and young women and benefits Girl Scouts of West Cen-tral Florida. To be considered, Women of Dis-tinction and Woman of Promise nominees must live within Girl Scouts of West Central Florida’s geographic boundaries (Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Marion, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sumter counties); nominees are not re-quired to have been Girl Scouts.

The Women of Distinction and Woman of Promise Selection Com-mittee will review the nominations received on or before Sept. 10th and make their selections. For more information, please contact Jerri Creed, development manager: 800-881-4475, ext. 1690, or email [email protected]. v

TROOP LEADERS & VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) is seeking troop leaders, both men and women over age 18, to volunteer as positive adult role models for girls. Troop leaders facilitate activities meeting the con-temporary needs of girls, and make a lasting impact by helping build

girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. GSWCF works in close partner-ship with troop leaders to deliver the information and support needed to help girls unleash their poten-tial. As part of its commitment, GSWCF offers a flexible schedule of in-person and online trainings for all troop leaders, assisting them in developing their skills and learning about the Girl Scout program. In addition to troop leaders, GSWCF is seeking volunteers to fill a variety of other positions. Volun-teers are needed to work behind the scenes to support troop leaders, or to train other volunteers. Volunteers are also needed to work directly with girls as event directors or program facilitators at local Girl Scout camps.  To learn more about the current volunteer needs in west central Florida, contact Kristie Wiley: (813) 262-1765 or [email protected]. www.gswcf.org/adults/volunteer/

C o M M u n i t y n e w sBraIn WorkoutA CALL FOR VOLunTeeRS FOR MeDICAL ReSeARCH

If physical exercise can strengthen muscles, can mental exercise strengthen brains? And if so, for how long? It appears the answer is yes and for several years, according to University of South Florida scientists. Older adults who are interested in trying it out for themselves can take part in a study now being conducted at USF. A team of researchers is investigating treatments to ward off the cognitive declines associated with what is considered normal aging and even Alzheimer’s disease. Prevention or delaying the onset of either or both are the goals of having elderly people work out with a computerized brain fitness program designed to improve their cognitive skills. The workout equipment consists of a computer station – and that’s it. Research assistants provide one brief training session and the participants identify a variety of visual and auditory targets designed to engage their mental faculties.

Jerri Edwards, an associate professor in the School of Aging Studies in the USF College of Behavioral and Community Sciences is the principal investigator

Edwards has more than 12 years of experience designing and executing large-scale NIH-funded clinical trials

in cognitive and she has found promising evidence that cognitive training improves everyday function and prolongs mobility. Edwards went on to explain, “Mild cognitive impairment may be a transitional phase, one that we can work with. Recent study findings show that 10 sessions of the brain fitness program we’re using improves cognitive abilities with effects lasting up to five years.”

“Prior study has shown other enduring benefits of the brain fitness program such as enhanced quality of life, improved performance of everyday activities, including driving, and less risk for

depressive symptoms,” Edwards said. “Depression is a predictor of and seems to contribute to cognitive decline, but this brain fitness program seems to help with both.” She added, “It’s exciting and extremely gratifying to be part of the process of helping older adults improve their health and well-being and gain greater independence resulting from this kind of fitness training.” The brain fitness program is being offered to older adults at the USF Cognitive Aging Lab on the Tampa campus through its research program. Adults age 60 or above who are interested in participating should contact the lab at (813) 974-6703 or [email protected].

C o M M u n i t y n e w scommunity on how to select the right college, how to maximize financial aid, and how to reduce the family’s out-of-pocket expenses. Inspired by his own experience of changing careers mid-life, he realized that students and their parents often miss the real heart of planning for college- getting the right fit to begin with. He wrote the book Finding the Right Fit: The Ultimate Guide to College (Mill City Press, 2009) to help families navigate the college search process and help students choose their career path wisely. This year, the Foundation is offering a $5,000 college scholarship, giving preference to middle income families. “These families often do not qualify for need-based financial aid and borrow more on average to pay for college,” says Albert. Students can register to attend a class on the website: www.therightfitfoundation.org. The scholarship application is also available on the website. The deadline for application is January 15, 2013, and the winner will be notified March 15, 2013.Finalists may be asked to complete an interview. The scholarship is a one-time award (non-renewable) and will be paid directly to the accredited four-year college or university the winner chooses to attend.

“The Right Fit Foundation is excited to help families that need it the most, and hope to expand the scholarship to $10,000 next year,” says Albert.

About The Right Fit™ FoundationKenneth Albert, TThe Right Fit™ Foundation’s founder, has been helping families with college since 1995. He created the non-profit in order to provide assistance and mentorship to families at no cost. The foundation helps students select colleges, majors and careers that fit their personality and academic profile, and helps families identify sources of financial aid to lower the cost of college.
