GREETINGS TO OUR DONORS

“THE TRANSFORMATION OF OUR 191-YEAR-OLD INSTITUTION FROM COLLEGE TO UNIVERSITY STATUS HAS PROFOUND IMPLICATIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE CAREERS EDUCATION.”

I AM PLEASED TO SHARE WITH YOU the MCPHS University annual Report on Giving. This publication introduces donors whose charitable contributions support the career-focused dreams of our students and chronicles the philanthropic activity of all donors during fiscal year 2014. Between July 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014, MCPHS University recorded nearly 2,300 gifts made by more than 2,000 donors, delivering more than $2 million in funding that touched many aspects of our students’ lives.

At a time when the value of higher education is coming under ever-increasing scrutiny, I am encouraged by the solid, meaningful, and vital investments that our donors continue to make in support of student-focused initiatives. During the past year, 59 scholarship funds received more than $100,000 in contributions, thereby supporting the distribution of $342,000 in externally funded scholarship awards to 320 academically qualified and highly motivated students enrolled across all academic disciplines. More than a half-dozen community-minded Worcester-based charitable foundations made grants that totaled $700,000 in support of the growth and development of, and advanced technology installation at, the 10 Lincoln Square Academic and Student Center in Worcester. Corporate and foundation contributions facilitated the introduction and the ongoing activities of an initiative designed to engage graduate students in coordinated, interdisciplinary preventive health and health promotion activities within the central Massachusetts Latino community. Gifts made by alumni to commemorate their milestone Reunion anniversaries supported increased student peer tutoring hours, new career development and personal health awareness programs for students, and the acquisition of new technology in the Esther M. Wilkins Forsyth Dental Hygiene Clinic.

The transformation of our 191-year-old institution from college to university status has profound implications for the future of healthcare careers education. This transition not only reflects the continuing diversification of our academic programs, but also underscores our commitment to deliver an outstanding interdisciplinary and interprofessional education to each student. As healthcare consumers, we ultimately benefit from this forward-thinking, proactive approach to contemporary healthcare careers education. As charitable gift donors to MCPHS University, we provide essential financial support to students, the beneficiaries of this leading-edge orientation.

Thank you again for your support.

PAYS IT FORWARDEMERY W. JOHNSON BSP ’78

HOW DO YOU SPELL FANATIC? You could make a good case for E-M-E-R-Y, as in Emery W. Johnson BSP ’78. The North Dartmouth, MA native, and longtime Texas resident, feeds his New England Patriots fanaticism as a 30+ year season ticket holder who says, “My support never waivers. No matter where I live or call home, I travel back home or chase them to other venues in support.”

Can such a fanatic share his passion for one pursuit with commitment to other causes? Johnson says yes. “This devotion given to my Patriots is the same devotion and support I give to the profession of pharmacy and MCPHS University.” That devotion first took shape in 1973 when prospective MCP student Emery Johnson listened to members of the Phi Delta Chi Eta Chapter, the professional pharmaceutical fraternity. “These students spoke very highly of the Pharmacy program and the quality of professors at MCP.” They led him to apply, accept the offer to enroll at MCP, and pledge the fraternity. “This bond of Phi Chi

brothers has served me well through my pharmacy career, as well as when I was a student at MCP,” he reflects.

In light of a 37-year professional career that has spanned three states (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Texas) and multiple organizations (CVS Pharmacy, Whitney

Pharmacy, Inc., Pharmacist PRN, The Medicine Shoppe, Harvard University Health Services, and Warren Associates, Inc.), Johnson declares that his MCPHS teaching assistant experiences in the inorganic, organic, and compounding labs “helped to foster a rewarding career path in pharmacy that has included compounding and dispensing with patient consultations.” Inspired by professors Robert Zaim BSP ’56, Douglas Kay BSP ’53, MS ’55, PhD ’58 and David Williams BSP ’60, MS ’62, PhD for their commitment to MCPHS and the pharmacy profession, Johnson adopted a “Pay it Forward” mantra. This calling led to his involvement over the years in nearly one dozen pharmacy-related state, regional, and local regulatory and educational associations, first responder membership in the Medical Reserve Corps of Collin County, TX, and participation in the MCPHS Mentor-A-Cardinal career exploration program.

His philanthropic interests mirror the scope of his volunteer commitments, ranging from MCPHS University to pharmacy-related foundations, food banks, family shelters, and local churches. “The ability to make charitable contributions is itself a gift of success that should not be taken lightly, and given only to organizations and institutions that do the most good,” he counsels. He counts his alma mater among the organizations that best fulfill this criterion. “Financially supporting MCPHS as an alumnus is one way to truly ‘pay it forward’ for the next generation of pharmacists who will provide pharmaceutical care services.”

Do football fanatics such as Emery Johnson care about wins and losses? Sure. But wins and losses alone don’t define the scope of Johnson’s commitment to the New England Patriots organization, an allegiance that is unwavering and a devotion that replicates, or perhaps only is superseded by, his faithfulness as a grateful MCPHS alumnus. n

SUPPORTS HER RIGHT-HANDED PROFESSION

“Never stop trying to learn, never settle for less than you believe in, and support your profession.”

MARIELLEN BRICKLEY-RAAB DH ’75

DID YOU KNOW that dental units are normally set up for right-handed clinicians? Most left-handed dental hygiene students, including Mariellen Brickley-Raab DH ’75, have to master complex dental treatment skills using their right hands. That’s a challenge. Yet it’s only one obstacle that Brickley-Raab conquered during the course of her educational and professional career in dental hygiene. Her career effectively began when she was a high school sophomore and has continued to the present day with her active participation in multiple professional organizations, national and state regulatory agencies, and wide-ranging community service programs, as well as in clinical and academic settings.

When her father unexpectedly died before she had completed high school, Brickley-Raab feared leaving her mother and four younger siblings. She decided to skip college. Her mother decided otherwise—a decision that led the young student to the Forsyth Dental Center in 1973 at a difficult time. In addition to the “right-hand bias,” she says, “I struggled with depression from the loss of my dad, and I had never been away from home. My family was struggling financially, and I didn’t have the funds to participate in some school dental hygiene functions.” However, thanks to the financial support of the Forsyth Alumni Scholarship Fund, the

opportunity to work in a Tufts Dental School summer program, and the mentoring of “three great Forsyth faculty members, Janet Yellowitz, Janet Sullivan, and Jill Shuman,” the Solebury, Pennsylvania resident received an education that she now realizes “prepared me for the leadership positions I have held during my career.”

Since 2002, Brickley-Raab has held multiple high-level positions with the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry. She served in leadership positions with the Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association, the American Dental

Hygienists’ Association, and the Montgomery-Bucks Dental Hygienists’ Association and has compiled a record of community service with dozens of organizations, including the Healing Consciousness Foundation, the Network of Victim Assistance, the Free Clinic of Doylestown, the Solebury Farmer’s Club, Wrapping Presence, and Trinity Episcopal Church’s Dental Kenyon Mission program.

Although Brickley-Raab is pursuing a master’s degree at the Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene, she also has been an active financial supporter. “As a former recipient of the Forsyth Alumni Scholarship, I can relate to the financial need of students. As a member of the board of the Norman Raab Foundation, I have a strong bias toward education, particularly in health-related fields…We all have an obligation to ‘give back’ to the best of our ability.”

Even though her dentist “talked me into becoming a dental hygienist,” and then her mother demanded it,

Mariellen Brickley-Raab is satisfied with and enthusiastic about her career, her contributions to society, and her personal connections, which, over the past 40 years, have helped nurture her progression as a dental hygiene professional. She personifies the advice that she lends to young Forsyth students: “Never stop trying to learn, never settle for less than you believe in, and support your profession.” Even when you are a lefty. n

Page 6: MCPHS University 2014 Report on Giving

DURING THE COURSE OF HIS EDUCATIONAL CAREER, Michael T. Ku BSP ’94, PharmD ’96 crossed an international border to pursue his pharmacy education at MCPHS University. Did the cross-border experience help him land at Pfizer as vice president of global clinical supply (GCS)? Probably not, but it didn’t hurt.

Dr. Ku grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor of science degree in toxicology, just as a warm-up to pursuing additional degrees at MCPHS. His decision to attend MCPHS, based upon recommendations from his “U of T” classmates, led to a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy in 1994, and a PharmD degree two years later. Ku never doubted this decision. “MCPHS delivered an outstanding education and gave me the opportunity to develop a skill set that serves me very well today,” he says. In particular, Dr. Ku notes, “During our two-year PharmD program, our assignments included formal presentations to peers and professors, as well as an opportunity to deliver a lecture to more than 100 pharmacy students within the Introduction to Pharmacy course. I developed formal presentation and lecture proficiencies that I still use.”

Dr. Ku’s responsibilities at Pfizer include international travel to provide strategic leadership and management for a global team of more than 160 Pfizer colleagues. The GCS organization, for which Dr. Ku serves as vice president, sits within Pfizer’s worldwide research and

development division. GCS sets the clinical supply strategy which includes systems, packaging, labeling, logistics, and management of quality investigational products administered to patients in compliance with good manufacturing practice and good clinical practice standards for Pfizer investigational studies. Never straying from his educational roots, Ku is also program director for the MCPHS University / Pfizer biopharmaceutical fellowship program. He notes, “The fellowship programs in GCS and quality assurance help fellows develop the professional skills necessary for successful careers in the biopharmaceutical industry. These programs also reflect the great partnership and collaboration between MCPHS and Pfizer.”

Dr. Ku’s journey to Pfizer included stops at Osco Drug, New England Medical Center, Novopharm Ltd. in Canada, Astra Pharmaceuticals, and Genzyme, a progression that fostered deep appreciation for interprofessional collaboration in the healthcare and biopharmaceutical industries. It’s one reason why he favors growth and diversification of the MCPHS curriculum. “Beyond pharmacy, expansion into many professional allied health disciplines reflects positively on the University’s commitment to contemporary healthcare provider education in an increasingly interdependent world,” he says.

That’s a big reason why Ku supports MCPHS with charitable gifts. “I believe that giving back with as much as you can provide is critical to the future success of MCPHS and to the success of the next generation of healthcare leaders.” It’s the main reason why he advises students not only to develop strong academic skills but also, he says, “to gain professional experience in their respective practice areas as early as possible.”

Michael Ku’s career has taken him many times to the ends of the earth and back. Yet he remains firmly grounded in his support for MCPHS as a generous donor, member of the University Corporation, fellowship program director, student preceptor, and caring alumnus. n

“Giving back as much as you can is critical to the future success of MCPHS and to the success of the next generation of healthcare leaders.”

MAX E. SABER BSPS ’12

“I KNEW FROM THE MOMENT I first stepped inside that MCPHS was where I wanted to be, and nothing was going to stand in my way.” That’s how Max E. Saber BSPS ’12 describes his reaction to his first visit to MCPHS University as a prospective student. His vision was spot on. Seven years later, Saber is still at MCPHS, now in the role of systems support technician for the Information Services department, where he oversees the University’s healthcare information systems. He notes, “This dynamic role lets me blend my healthcare and information technology backgrounds together to provide a unique perspective to the users and departments that I work with on a daily basis.”

Saber knew that he was destined to attend a smaller college, having grown up and attended public high school in the town of Tiverton, Rhode Island. “While I did consider other colleges for my undergraduate education, none came close to the mark that MCPHS set,” he says. He thrived academically in the four-year pharmaceutical sciences program in which the curriculum prepared him for graduate education that he completed in 2014.

From extracurricular activity in student government leadership, which let him “begin networking and building relationships at an early stage of my student career,” to working in the MCPHS Information Services department, everything, he says “helped build a dynamic skill set that would lead to my future career in health informatics. The time I spent supporting the pharmacy practice lab, sonography lab, and

dental hygiene clinic showed me the opportunities available for people with a unique technology and healthcare background.” But Saber has built more than just a “working” relationship with MCPHS.

Max Saber serves on the Young Alumni Association executive board as the membership chair, sits on the Alumni Association Board of Directors as the recording secretary, and is a generous charitable donor. “Giving back to your alma mater, no matter the amount or method, should always

be on your mind.…Alumni support shows our approval of the University’s mission and validates the direction in which the University is moving.” That line of thinking clearly works for Saber. “The University never overlooks an opportunity for growth and development and always has students’ best interests in mind,” he says. In an increasingly competitive employment landscape, Saber’s observation is especially noteworthy. His counsel may

be even more relevant: “There is more to your degree than what is written on it. Even though you’ve spent three to six years earning your degree and want to dive right in using everything you’ve learned, just remember that there are always more opportunities than meet the eye.”

As a high school student, Max Saber already had a good eye for his future. As an MCPHS alumnus, volunteer, and donor, he retains an insightful vision and an absolute commitment to MCPHS. n

“Alumni support shows our approval of the University’s mission and validates the direction in which the University is moving.”

WAYS TO GIVE

Gifts to MCPHS University can be made in several ways:

• The easiest gifts to convey include cash and marketable securities. Another convenient way to make a gift by using a major credit card is to visit the secure website at alumni.mcphs.edu/support and then complete the giving form. MCPHS also encourages donors to contact either their own or their spouse’s employer’s human resources or personnel offices to verify whether the employer matches charitable contributions. • MCPHS offers donors the opportunity to establish life income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. These vehicles allow donors to simultaneously support MCPHS and receive income.

• MCPHS also encourages prospective donors to name the University as the recipient of a deferred gift such as a bequest, or as a beneficiary of an insurance policy or retirement account.

MCPHS University officers are ready to work with you and your financial advisors to help maximize the impact of your contribution, including tax benefits, as you invest today in the healthcare professionals of tomorrow.

MONAHAN SOCIETYWhat is the Monahan Society? The Monahan Society facilitates and recognizes leadership-level charitable support from recently graduated alumni. Alumni who have graduated within the past ten years become Monahan Society members when they make annual gifts starting at only $500, for which they receive a minimum of President’s Circle-level benefits, privileges, and recognition.
