A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR - JIM DARLINGHere in the city of McAllen everyone matters. The facilities and services the Parks and Recreation Department o�ers are designed to meet the needs of the entire community including children, teens, adults, seniors and even the family pet. The department o�ers a variety classes, camps and events for all to enjoy throughout the entire year. We welcome the opportunity to serve our patrons with special needs. As part of our inclusion program, we will accommodate our programs to meet the needs of the participant so that they may enjoy full participation alongside other children, adults and families.

MISSION STATEMENTThe Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and offer safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

INCLUSION PROCESSThe City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.

REFUNDS & TRANSFERSWe constantly strive to provide you with the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfied with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following.

TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class.

REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process.

Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. Some of our programs, such as adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals, have different, specific policies which apply. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest.

MEDICAL POLICYThe City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notified by a qualified medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

TAAF TEAM SPORTST.A.A.F. TEAM PROGRAMSMcAllen Parks and Recreation is proud to offer Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (T.A.A.F.)

programs. Young athletes will compete against other individuals and teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state in various sports including track & field, golf, swimming and tennis. Teams will attend local tournaments and meets, earning the opportunity to compete at the regional level.

Qualifying athletes will earn a chance to compete in the state Games of Texas, a week-long Olympic style competition featuring a variety of sports. McAllen will host the 2016 & 2017 Games of Texas.

Experienced athletes are invited to join Team McAllen. A complete schedule of meets and competitions will be provided once classes begin. Individual T.A.A.F. membership is included in the class fee. Other fees including individual meet fees are the responsibility of the participant.

T.A.A.F. GOLF TEAMExperienced golfers will receive specialized instruction to improve their techniques and compete in tournaments across the Rio Grande Valley. Participants must complete a skills test on Monday, June 6.

LEARN TO SWIM 25GUS & GOLDIE LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAMThe most popular swimming program in the entire Rio Grande Valley is back! Join Gus & Goldie to learn important water safety skills. Each participant will receive an official Gus & Goldie T-shirt and certificate of achievement. Advance registration is required and space is limited.

PARENT/BABY (6-18 MONTHS) Designed to teach parents how to work safely and effectively with their infant to help develop water adjustment skills and learn to have fun in the water. One parent per child is allowed in the water at a time. Swim diapers and swim suits are necessary for infants. No diapers or disposable swim diapers are allowed.

PARENT/TODDLER (18-48 MONTHS)Reinforces skills learned in the infant level class and progresses to learn more ad-vanced skills age appropriate for a toddler. One parent per child is allowed in the water at a time. Swim diapers and swim suits are necessary for infants. No diapers or dispos-able swim diapers are allowed.

PRE-SCHOOL (4-5 YEARS)Learn basic water adjustment skills with an emphasis on play to prepare children for comfort in the water for Youth Level 1 & 2. Designed to teach swimmer independence with initial play in the wading pool and progression to the main pool when students are ready.

YOUTH (6 - 13 YEARS)on the first day of each session, the instructors will assess the participant’s swimming ability by performing a skills test. Based on the test, the instructor will determine the participants class level.

LEVEL 1 & 2 Swimmers will start to learn basic water exploration and swimming skills. This class covers submersion under the water, floating & gliding on front & back, rhythmic breathing, safety skills, and front & back crawls at a beginner level.

LEVEL 3 Designed to build upon skills learned during previous levels. The back crawl will be expanded and the front crawl will be perfected. Swimmers will also learn how to tread water.

LEVEL 4 Designed to build upon the skills mastered at Level 3. Swimmers will develop endurance to swim greater distances. Breaststroke and sidestroke are also taught.

Learn basic perspectives of color and dimension. Ballet - Introduction to the graceful art form of ballet. Learn positions, balance and coordination.Indoor Tennis - An introduction to the sport of tennis learning skills and techniques to serve and score.Dance & Cheer - Introduction to cheer skills and techniques. Include cheer, jumps and dances.Folklorico - Learn the many different styles of traditional Mexican dance and choreography.Football Skills - Learn basic football skills including throwing, kicking, blocking and punting.Hoop Starz - Get a jump start learning skills and techniques to excel on the court.Just Dance - It’s a mix of a little Hip Hop, Jazz and Free Style dance techniques.Mini Masterpieces - Work with a variety of materials from paint to beads and create your own art by hand.Soccer Skills - Basic introduction to skills and techniques including running, dribbling and kicking. Tennis shoes required. Activity takes place indoors and outdoors.Tumbling - Learn basic tumbling skills from forward rolls, cartwheels and basic back handsprings.Volleyball Skills - Introduction to basic volleyball skills learning the fundamentals of coordination including bump, set, spike and serve.Youth Archery - Series of classes concentrates on range and safety rules, range courtesy, fundamentals of archery, and is taught using compound equipment.
