The Department strives to: Improve the quality of life through the provision of well-balanced, high-quality recreation programs for the residents of McAllen to enjoy during their leisure

time. Facilitate wholesome and constructive programs with a measurable value to the community. Provide attractive and well-maintained major parks and recreation facilities in each sector of the city. These facilities should be within a reasonable distance of every surrounding neighborhood and off er safe opportunities for athletic competition, facility

gatherings, and other passive and active recreation activities. Promote environmental conservation, eco and cultural tourism and socially oriented special events.

Registration is not accepted at program sites. Advance registration required. Participants may be asked for a proof of residency.

ONLINE REGISTRATIONVisit https://webtrac.mcallen.net to register online. You must create a username and password, as well as enter all pertinent household information before the website will allow you to register online. Online forms of payment accepted include Visa and Mastercard. Please call the administration offi ce at (956) 681-3333 if you need assistance.

RETURNED CHECK POLICYA $20 service charge will be assessed for all returned checks, and students will be removed from classes until fi nances are settled.

REFUNDS & TRANSFERSWe constantly strive to provide you with the highest quality recreation programs. If, for any reason, you are not completely satisfi ed with a class or activity, please tell us so we can respond to your concerns. In addition to using your feedback to help us improve our programs, we will arrange one of the following.

TRANSFERS between classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting, at no charge. After the second class meeting, transfers may be made, pending space availability, with a charge of $5 per class.

REFUNDS for classes will be allowed only prior to the second class meeting and will carry a $10 fee per class. Refunds will take 30 to 60 days to process.

Requests for transfers and refunds must be in writing. Some of our programs, such as adult leagues, contract programs and facility rentals, have diff erent, specifi c policies which apply. The McAllen Parks and Recreation Department retains the privilege of canceling any scheduled activity that fails to generate minimum interest.

MEDICAL POLICYThe City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department will not prohibit any person from participating in an activity due to a medical condition or handicap, unless such condition is likely to cause injury to that individual or other participants in the activity. A participant who has been notifi ed by a qualifi ed medical professional that he/she has a medical condition that is likely to cause injury to themselves or other participants, is obligated to inform the Parks and Recreation Department, at the time of registration, of the condition and willingly withdraw from the program or activity if requested by the Department. It is recommended that all participants receive medical authorization before participating in these programs.

INCLUSION PROCESSThe City of McAllen Parks and Recreation welcomes the opportunity to accommodate our patrons with special needs so that full participation in leisure and recreation programs may be enjoyed by all. Reasonable modifi cations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis taking the appropriate steps to ensuring a safe and enjoyable leisure experience. Patrons with special needs are encouraged to bring a companion with them for assistance at no extra charge in lieu of an additional staff member. The initial request for accommodation should be made on the program registration form.

6 TAAF TEAM SPORTST.A.A.F. TEAM PROGRAMSMcAllen Parks and Recreation is proud to off er Texas Amateur Athletics Federation (T.A.A.F.)

programs. Young athletes will compete against other individuals and teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and the state in various sports including track & fi eld, golf, swimming and tennis. Teams will attend local tournaments and meets, earning the opportunity to compete at the regional level.

Qualifying athletes will earn a chance to compete in the Games of Texas, a week-long Olympic style competition featuring a variety of sports. The 2014 Games of Texas will be held July 31- August 3 in College Station, Texas.

Experienced athletes are invited to join Team McAllen. A complete schedule of meets and competitions will be provided once classes begin. Individual T.A.A.F. membership is included in the class fee. Other fees including individual meet fees are the responsibility of the participant.

GAMES OF TEXASPARENT MEETINGParents of athletes who qualify for the Games of Texas will be required to attend a meeting to discuss travel, expenses and general information. FOOTBALL SKILLS CAMPCalling all future Pro Bowlers! This non-contact camp is a great opportunity to learn tips and techniques from coaches and allows athletes to prepare themselves for the upcoming season. BASKETBALL CAMP OF CHAMPSCoach Romy Vela from San Antonio John Jay High School will conduct this summer’s boy’s and girl’s camp. Area high school and middle school basketball coaches will assist Coach Vela. Participants will receive four days of excellent drills, techniques, practice and competition while having fun. Friday will be tournament day with both age groups meeting at 8:30 a.m. to compete. All campers will receive a T-shirt. The fi rst 100 registered campers will receive a camp basketball.

POOL RULESAll swimmers must wear appropriate swim attire: No cut off s, gym shorts or leotards. Board shorts with drawstrings are allowed. Swim diapers or swimming suits are necessary for infants. No diapers or disposable swim diapers allowed. Swim diapers available for purchase for $10 at each pool location. Children age 3 and under are free with an adult. Children ages 10 & under must be accompanied by an adult ages 18 & over at all times in the pool facility. Children age 6 & under have an adult age 18 & over with them in the water at all times.

LIFEGUARD TRAININGInterested in a great job or challenging career as a professional lifeguard? Train to become a certifi ed American Red Cross lifeguard and learn valuable skills including injury prevention, facility safety, patron surveillance, emergency preparation, rescue skills, victim assessment, First Aid, CPR/AED and care for head, neck and spinal injuries. Parent/Guardian signature required at time of registration for participants age 17 and under.

PREREQUISITE: Participant must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, complete a timed retrieval of a 10lb object from a depth of 6 ft., tread water with no hands for 2 minutes in deep water.
