Form and Analysis – Fall 2013 Dr. Kyle Gullings Group Project Purpose: Using any medium of your choosing, develop a creative project detailing the use of sonata form in a full-score symphonic first movement. In particular, locate the primary structural sections, key areas, themes, and any other musical events significant in the delineation of this sonata form movement. Sources: Schubert Symphony No. 1 in D Major (D.82), movement 1 The score is available on IMSLP, at the following link. http://conquest.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/b/b9/IMSLP51842-PMLP32464-D82_-_1.pdf The audio is available by searching Naxos, or through the following link. http://uttyler.naxosmusiclibrary.com/stream.asp?s=152168%2Futtylernmlpd03%2F271123%5F01 Due Dates: Friday, Nov. 15 – Contract Due Friday, Nov. 22 – Project Due Project Description You are highly encouraged to select a project format that is creative and entertaining, takes advantage of the combined artistic and technical strengths of your group members, and imparts all required analytical information in a clear and direct manner. Some possible project formats might include visual artwork, analytical video, animated short movie, or short-form stage play. Be creative! If you choose a time-based medium, such as a video, do not exceed 11:47 in running time. Ideally, aim for 3-6 minutes. Be sure that the creative aspect of your project reflects substantial effort and quality. For example, a pencil drawing on a single 8.5 x 11” sheet of paper will likely not be of sufficient scope to portray the entire movement. If desired, you may deliver all necessary analytical information in a separate paper document, which can accompany your group’s creative product. For example, if you create a series of somewhat abstract paintings to represent the music, you could also turn in a one-page attachment that lists key areas, themes, etc., for clarity. However, you must incorporate these details into the artwork in some fashion, even if accompanied by a separate document. Projects are not graded on artistic merit (good painting technique, for example). However, they are graded on substance, creativity, and ambition. (continued)

• Due Dates: Friday, Nov. 15 – Contract Due Friday, Nov. 22 – Project Due

• Project Description • You are highly encouraged to select a project format that is creative and entertaining, takes

advantage of the combined artistic and technical strengths of your group members, and imparts all required analytical information in a clear and direct manner.

• Some possible project formats might include visual artwork, analytical video, animated short movie, or short-form stage play. Be creative!

• If you choose a time-based medium, such as a video, do not exceed 11:47 in running time. Ideally,

aim for 3-6 minutes.

• Be sure that the creative aspect of your project reflects substantial effort and quality. For example, a pencil drawing on a single 8.5 x 11” sheet of paper will likely not be of sufficient scope to portray the entire movement.

• If desired, you may deliver all necessary analytical information in a separate paper document, which

can accompany your group’s creative product. For example, if you create a series of somewhat abstract paintings to represent the music, you could also turn in a one-page attachment that lists key areas, themes, etc., for clarity. However, you must incorporate these details into the artwork in some fashion, even if accompanied by a separate document.

• Projects are not graded on artistic merit (good painting technique, for example). However, they are

graded on substance, creativity, and ambition.

• Locate the following features, noting measure number, key area, and section label/thematic content. Incorporate these elements into your product, and/or list them on a separate sheet. • Primary structural sections: Introduction (if any), Exposition, Development, and Recapitulation,

and Coda (if any) • Themes: 1, 2, closing themes (if any), etc. • Transitions between tonal areas • Codetta (if any) • Retransition / Dominant prolongation (if any) • Areas of stability vs. instability • Thematic development, fragmentation, etc. • Other musical elements that you find significant in the delineation of this sonata form movement • Note how the composer follows or breaks with traditional sonata form in his use of formal

elements, placement of themes, transitions, key relationships, sequential passages, etc.

• Materials and Technology: While your instructor is happy to consult regarding use of materials and technology related to the creation of your art project, it is the responsibility of you and your group members to choose a project format that is within your collective abilities. For example, if no one in your group has skills and experience in sculpting, your group would do well to avoid attempting a sculpture. Part of this project’s challenge is choosing a format that makes use of your group members’ respective talents.

• Group Contracts: In order to prevent both procrastination and miscommunications between group members and the instructor, each group will submit a Group Project Contract (Due Friday, Nov. 15) detailing the intended project, already in-progress, and the specific expected contributions of each individual member. While it is expected that all members will assist with all components in some way, the instructor acknowledges that different individuals will excel in different aspects of the project (design, art creation, analytical details/writing, etc.). It is the responsibility of each group member to ensure an equitable division of effort among all members. If one or more members are not meeting their contracted obligations, it is in everyone’s best interest that you inform your instructor early in the process. As always, please feel free to consult your instructor with any questions on this project.

• Grading:

10% – Group Contract Contract filled out accurately, completely, and on time, and features duties for and input from all members

30% – Creativity and Ambition Project shows significant effort, time commitment,

ingenuity, adaptation, and artistic vision

40% – Substance/Analysis Project or attached document accurately and completely identifies the musical features

20% – Individual Responsibility Individual was an active group member, contributed to the

final product, and fulfilled all contracted duties
