MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH HERNDON, VIRGINIA DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY April 23, 2017

We invite you to join us Today for the celebration of the Sacrament of Anointing, Chaplet of Divine Mer-cy and Prayer as we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 2:00 pm in the Church.

Peace and good! As we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, we pause to reflect upon God’s gift of mercy. What exactly is mercy? The Catholic Encyclopedia offers this definition:

Mercy, compassionate sorrow at another's misfortune together with a will to alleviate it; it is genuine love in relation to an unhappy being. The encounter of love and misery gives birth to mercy, which is therefore one of the essential forms of charity, situated in the very heart of Christianity (cf. St. Thomas Aquinas).

As we read in the Gospel of Matthew, "Blessed are the merci-ful, for they shall obtain mercy" (Mt. 5:7). Bishop Burbidge (2015) shared the following insights on the virtue of mercy:

What better way for us, as recipients of mercy, to ex- press thanks to God than by dedicating ourselves to be instruments of His mercy. One way we do this is by imi-tating the Lord and forgiving one another. Sure, it is not always easy to forgive those who have hurt or betrayed us. Yet, God would not ask us to do so unless we were capable. With his grace, all things are possible. Forgive as Christ has forgiven you. Sometimes in life we close the door to our potential and endless possibilities and see only our weaknesses and failures. Sometimes, it seems as if others close the door on us and fail to love and accept us as we desire. Some-times, the doors to peace and joy seem closed in a world that reflects such hatred and violence. Yet, in the midst of all his, we do not despair. Why? Because the doors of God’s mercy and love are always wide open; precious gifts in which we experience forgiveness and healing; the grace to live in unity with one another; and a power far greater than any darkness of this world.

As we read in the First Letter to Peter: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead . . ." (1 Pt. 1:3). Indeed, "may his mercy endure forever." Blessed Divine Mercy Sunday! Reference: Burbidge, M. (2015 December 13). Homily: Third Sunday of Advent - Opening of the Door of Mercy. Peace and good! I wish to thank the parishioners who have made their pledges and donations to the Bishop’s Lenten Ap-peal (BLA). Your pledges and donations will assist Bishop Burbidge in his commitment to provide the means for the dio-cese to share the “works of mercy” to those in need. As of this date, we have reached 97% of our BLA goal with 19% of the parish families participating. The pastoral team would like to request your help in reaching our BLA goal and our hope to have 30% of parish families participating in the BLA. For the parishioners who are still reflecting upon their pledge/donation to the BLA, we invite you to assist Bishop Burbidge in sharing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy throughout the Diocese and our community.

Let us continue to support the theme of the BLA: “Offering hands to serve and hearts to love.” In the peace of Francis of Assisi, Father Tom
