THE CATHEDRAL PARISH AND CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINT AUGUSTINE ST. AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 22, 2017

Mission Statement of the Cathedral Parish St. Augustine, Florida

We are Christ’s eyes, ears, mouth, hands, and feet -

sent out to do justice, especially for the poor and oppressed,

to minister to the needs of the community, to be faithful stewards of God’s creation -

awakening faith among the hopeless, and promoting life even within the culture

of death.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK On this L’ D, the Sunday Lectionary moves us

to a semi-continuous reading of the Gospel according to Matthew. Many of you know that one of the reforms called for at the Second Vatican Council was a greater sharing of the Sacred Scriptures. One of the best gifts of the liturgi-cal reform was the Lectionary for Mass. During Ordinary Time, especially, a three-year cycle was developed in which one of the Synoptic (from the Greek word synop-tikos meaning “viewed together”) Gospels is featured. This year it is Matthew’s Gospel.

Although the Gospel according to John has a pride of place in the Church, particularly during the Easter sea-son, the Gospel according to Matthew has pride of place as being the “first” gospel in the canon of the New Testa-ment. One of the reasons for this is that Matthew’s Gos-pel was used in the earliest centuries of the Church to teach and form those who wanted to become members of the Church – the catechumens. And over the next six Sundays we will find out why as we will hear Jesus the Teacher in what has been called “The Sermon on the Mount.” It calls for a radical change of life as well as re-vealing the basics of Christian living, which became a sta-ple in forming new Christians in the way of life they were asking to take on.

Matthew’s Gospel was written for a Jewish-Christian audience and often uses quotes from the Old Testament (the Jewish Scriptures) to show how Jesus has fulfilled the promises God made there. These next several Sundays will be a challenge for us to once again embrace the full-ness of Jesus’ teachings and live the Christian life he pro-poses so that the Kingdom of God may be experienced even now.

Love, Father Tom

Stewardship reflection for the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

The prophet Isaiah again records a remarkable prophecy in our First Reading from the Book of Isaiah. Within the context of that Scriptural reading Isaiah says, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.” Just prior to that, Isaiah speaks of two areas of Israel that are also the names of two of the twelve tribes of Israel — Zebulon and Naphtali. These tribes were located at the northern end of Israel adjacent to the Sea of Galilee.

When the Assyrians invaded and occupied Israel, it was the northern tribes like Zebulon and Naphtali that suffered the most. It was they on whom the greatest gloom and darkness descended. However, the prophecy speaks of the coming of the Messiah, the birth of Jesus, the Light of the World. Thus, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.”

Christ is still the light of the world, and He still provides this light and hope to those of us who may feel that we are in darkness and distress. We must embrace Him nonetheless, and follow His way by becoming His disciple. If we do that, our lives will indeed be filled with light and great rejoicing. It is up to us to respond. In John 8:12, the Lord tells us, “I am the light of the world; anyone who fol-lows me will not be walking in dark, but will have the light of life.”

CATHEDRAL PARISH SCHOOLS’ 32nd ANNUAL FESTIVAL

SILENT AUCTION Cathedral Parish Early Education Center is proud to an-

nounce that we will host the Silent Auction at the 32nd Annual Cathedral Parish School Festival on Sunday, February 26, 2017.

The Cathedral Festival helps raise funds to assist Cathedral Parish School and Cathedral Parish Early Education Center. This Festival is the major fundraiser for our schools and its success is vital to ensure that we are able to offer a Catholic, faith-based education to our community.

Last year, thanks to the community, we raised thousands of dollars for both Cathedral Parish School and Cathedral Parish Early Education Center through the Cathedral Festival. Please consider donating an item to contribute to our Silent Auction this year.

If you have an item to donate, please call Jill or Peggy at (904) 829-2933, or e-mail [email protected] to arrange delivery.

We appreciate your faithful support!

To live charitably means not looking out for our own interests, but carrying the burdens of the weakest and poorest among us.

Cathedral Social Justice Ministry 501-2632 Cathedral Parish Parking: TRUE OR FALSE?

Cathedral parishioners paid for the “Bank of America lot.” FALSE. To date, no monies from parishioner donations have been

used for the purchase of that lot. This loan payment is made exclu-sively from the income generated from the parking business. While the parish is pleased to be able to offer parishioner parking for Mass, parishioner abuse of this privilege jeopardizes the parish’s ability to make the loan payment.

Bishops of Florida release Roe v. Wade statement In their statement dated January 22, 2017, the bishops of Florida

mark the 44th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade:

"Today marks yet another heartbreaking anniversary of the le-galization of abortion in the United States. Today we mourn the subsequent deaths of over 58 million children in their mothers' wombs. As a new administration takes office, we are hopeful that our president will bring to fruition his campaign promise to nomi-nate pro-life Supreme Court justices. We are further encouraged by his commitments to work with Congress to ensure conscience pro-tections for health care workers, make Hyde Amendment re-strictions on taxpayer funding of abortion permanent law, and de-fund abortion providers.

"Regardless, we will remain steadfast in our commitment to promote the sanctity of life and dignity of the human person in state policy. In 2016, for example, we supported the passage of legis-lation that requires abortion providers to have an agreement with a local hospital, as is required of all other invasive office surgery pro-viders."

The Bishops’ full statement may be found at their website: flaccb.org/documents/2017/1/170122RoevWade_final.pdf.

Spiritual Enrichment Opportunities Every Tuesday, 6:30-7:30 p.m.: Christian Meditation hosted by Sister Mary Christine Zimorski, SSJ Christian Meditation, deeply rooted in Christian tradition, aims “to allow God’s mysterious presence within us to become more and more not only a reality, but the reality which gives meaning, shape and purpose to every-thing we do, to everything we are…” Cost: Donations accepted. Call (904) 824-1752 to register or at www.ssjfl.org.

Every Saturday, 2:30-3:30 p.m.: Centering Prayer hosted by Sister Margaret Zapf, SSJ Centering prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, in which we experience God’s presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Call (904) 824-1752 to register or at www.ssjfl.org.

MINISTRY to the “DEAR NEIGHBOR” Immediately after Hurricane Matthew, the Sisters of St. Joseph

were able to prepare “Dear Neighbor” packages for distribution to those in great need of basic supplies at the time. The Sisters distrib-uted almost 1,000 emergency supply and hygiene packages thanks to so many generous people! These hygiene packages will now be extended for distribution to homeless, farmworkers, Catholic Char-ities and Dining with Dignity recipients, etc.; wherever we find the needs. You are invited to participate in our ministry by donations of travel size hygiene supplies. They may be placed in the box at the back of the Cathedral. Items will be picked up each day, sorted, packaged and delivered by the Sisters.

Requested items include travel size combs, brushes, tooth paste, tooth brushes, body powder, baby wipes, deodorant, hand sanitizer, soap, Kleenex, and insect repellent; pints of bottled water; or money to purchase items. We are grateful for the generosity that we have been receiving! Caring Choices is a program of Catholic Charities

which reaches out to those in an unplanned pregnancy. Counseling, education, support and resources are made available to those facing a crisis pregnancy. This is one decision not to face alone! Call 1-866-901-9647.
