March 2018
Remember when you could hardly wait for the sun to come
up so you could visit your friends? Remember when the best
games you played were fun because they were simple and
anyone could join in?
If you have dropped in to our
Center lately then you have likely
noticed the ever-increasing and
jovial crowd we draw in to our
classes, games and daily meals. If
you haven’t been in for a while
you might wonder
What’s the excitement all about?
Remember when it was
cool to lose your teeth
and nobody cared how
your hair looked?
Open our March Newsletter and you will see we serve your
favorite meals, hold exercise classes where everyone is
welcomed and able to participate, show favorite movies, do
crafts, play cards, dominoes and share puzzles. And, just
like the good old days, you don’t have to do the shopping,
cooking or clean-up after you eat and play.

The Science Behind Seasons Spring! March 20 or so is the official start of the spring season, which means the days and nights are the
same length over the entire earth (it’s the start of Autumn in the Southern Hemisphere). It’s called the
spring “equinox”, which comes from Latin for “equal night.” After this date, the days will get longer until
the summer “solstice” (or the longest day of the year). Sunlight decreases until the autumn equinox (day
and night are equal). The days continue to get shorter until the winter solstice (with a meaning of “sun
stand still” in Latin), with the shortest duration of sunlight all year.
How does this work and why does this happen? The earth’s axis is tilted 23 degrees from vertical, giving us
our change of day/night length and our seasons. The picture below shows how it works.
“Newmont Legacy Pledge 2018”
Thank you Newmont
Legacy Fund.
This pledge, combined with
all you have done for us over
the past years, totals over
$500,000 in contributions to
The Elko Senior Activity

Your partnership means the
world to us!
Gratefully,
Kerry Aguirre- Director
During the equinoxes, the poles tilt so that every
spot on Earth receives the same hours of nighttime
and daytime. In our summer, the North Pole tilts
toward the sun resulting in longer days and more
intense sunshine. In our winter, the North Pole tilts
away from the sun, resulting in shorter days and less
intense sunlight. (A curious thing about this: in our
summer, the earth is further AWAY from the sun and in our winter the Earth is CLOSER to the sun.
Distance from the sun does not cause seasons - it’s the tilt of our planet!) Directly at the poles, complete
darkness or light repeats every six months.

Aging Well There are many things you can do to help yourself age well: exercise, be physically active, and make healthy food choices. But did you know that participating in activities you enjoy may also help support healthy aging? As people get older, they often find themselves spending more and more time at home alone. The isolation can lead to depression and is not good for your health. If you find yourself spending a lot of time alone, try volunteering or add one of our social activities to your routine.

TIP OF THE MONTH
5 fun ways to
Get Fit and Get Flexible
How far up can you lift your arm? How close can you get to touching your toes? The
answer depends on your flexibility, or your range of motion at any joint. Some of your
joints may be more flexible than others. No matter how flexible you are now, you can
improve at any age. Fun activities done once or twice per week can help. Flexibility
helps prevent injuries and puts a bounce in your step.
1. Yoga Yoga is 5,000 years old, but its benefits are
very modern. Yoga can increase flexibility
and reduce stress. It is good for bodies of
any age. It’s best to start with a few classes
from a certified yoga teacher. You can find
classes at yoga centers, fitness clubs and
hospitals. Many DVDs are also available.
These often are made for special audiences.
Beginners or people with arthritis and back
problems can find DVDs specially made for
them.
2. Pilates A German gymnast created Pilates exercises
about 100 years ago. In some ways, Pilates is
like yoga. The exercises focus on breathing,
strength in the core muscles and flexibility.
Pilates classes might move at a faster pace
than yoga. Many classes mix yoga and
Pilates. Look for classes taught by a certified
instructor or on DVD.
3. Tai chi Tai chi comes from China. It has been
around for hundreds of years. Tai chi is
good for any one. It doesn’t matter if you
are athletic, sedentary or elderly. You can
modify tai chi to meet your goals. So it is
really great for older people and people with
a disability. The exercises help your
balance, posture and strength. Your
flexibility, coordination and concentration
will also improve. You can find DVDs and
online instructions for tai chi, but it may be
best to learn it from a certified instructor. See page 6 & 7 on our Tai Chi Classes.
4. Dance All types of dance can help with flexibility.
Just remember to be safe! Stretch joint
muscles, tendons and ligaments slowly. Over
time, you will become more flexible. Choose
the type of dance that fits your rhythm and
style. You may already know the steps. If
not, learn them from a certified instructor.
Injuries are no fun.
5. Swimming If you have joint pain, the pool may be a
good option. Water exercises or water
aerobics can be a safe way to work on
flexibility. This is because the water provides
support. It makes it easier to move tender or
older joints. Work with a certified,
experienced instructor. This will help to
prevent further problems. Back-to-Basics
