Welcome to Holy Week. We begin with today’s celebra!on of Palm (Passion) Sunday. We enter Jerusalem
with Jesus and hear the Passion account of St. Mark. This liturgy has two moods. The first is the jubila!on of
the entrance procession. The second is the more somber mood a$er the proclama!on of the Passion.
I will be available for Confessions on Wednesday, March 28 at 5:30 p.m. un!l all are done.
On Monday, the Diocesan Church will gather to celebrate Mass of Chrism at which Bishop Quinn will
consecrate the oils used in the sacraments throughout the year. This year we will gather at the Cathedral of
the Sacred Heart in Winona. I encourage you to join us for this beau!ful and unique ceremony.
On Thursday we enter the Triduum (the Three Days). We commemorate the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and the
Resurrec!on. The Church has ancient, beau!ful and unique ceremonies on each day. I hope you will make the effort to
join us for each one. It is a great way of saying “Thank you” to the Lord for the gi$ of salva!on.
As history laden as these celebra!ons are (and they are among the most ancient of the Church’s year) it is im-
portant to remember that this is not just an exercise in memory. Thomas Hopko puts it this way: “The church does not
pretend, as it were, that it does not know what will happen with the crucified Jesus. It does not sorrow and mourn over
the Lord as if the Church itself were not the very crea!on which has been produced from his wounded side and from the
depths of his tomb. All through the services the victory of Christ is contemplated and the resurrec!on is proclaimed.”
On Holy Thursday, we gather to remember the Last Supper of Jesus for whom meals were so important in his min-
istry. We wash feet as a reminder that Jesus came to serve and not to be served and we are to do the same.
On Good Friday, there is no Mass. In a unique ceremony we proclaim the Passion of St. John, venerate the Cross,
pray for the needs of the Church and the world, and receive Holy Communion.
We spend Saturday in quiet as the Lord is in the tomb. At the Vigil
we begin our celebra!on of the Resurrec!on. We light a fire and process
Into the darkened church to proclaim that Christ is our Light. We listen to
stories from the history of our salva!on. We celebrate the Eucharist in joy.
This is a beau!ful night in which we are reminded of the love and power of
our God.
I encourage you to come to these beau!ful celebra!ons. The
!mes are listed elsewhere in the bulle!n. I know it is a harder for those
who do not drive or who do not like to drive at night. Perhaps you could
reach out to your neighbors and invite them to come with you. Many of
our senior members would love to be able to come but are not able. The
Lord may be calling you to help them par!cipate.
Thanks to those who have made a pledge for the Annual Diocesan
Ministries Appeal. We rely on your generosity to respond to this appeal
which supports the various ministries of the Diocese throughout the year.
Our parish benefits in a variety of ways through this appeal so I ask you to
be generous. Please take a moment this week to return your pledge or
gi$. It is easy to lay it aside and then forget. I do it all the !me! So, take
the few minutes that it takes to fill in the response and send it back. We
appreciate your con!nued generosity.
In ministry, we have the privilege of standing in a sacred space with so many. I know of a parishioner grieving
the loss of her mother. Another who is dealing with the shock of the diagnosis of stage three cancer. Another
who is s!ll out of work a$er many months and another who is homeless, unable to rent due to a past evic-
!on. We have another parishioner dealing with the loss of all parental rights and another who is naviga!ng
the unknown waters of the mental health system on behalf of her daughter. Another who fights the cycle of
recurring depression in her life and another parishioner who has lost his business. This is the suffering Body of Christ in
our midst. I think the Passion story compels us to no!ce not just the main event, but the side players too. The women who
faithfully stayed by Jesus’ side, especially in his suffering. Simon of Cyrene and Joseph of Arimathea who both helped to
carry the weight of our Lord’s body. The centurion who finally recognized God in the person of Jesus. May their stories be
ours. Give us the loyalty of those women disciples, so we can stay present to those who suffer. Give us the strength to li$
up the persons in need we encounter. Give us the eyes to finally see you, Jesus, in all those we meet.

News from St. Mary’s Preschool The preschoolers have had a busy March! We celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday by making green
eggs and ham. One version was made with real eggs and ham – the other with vanilla pudding
and a mini cookie for the ham. The green eggs and ham made with
the vanilla pudding was the overwhelming favorite! The book Wacky
Wednesday was the inspira!on for taking all the chairs out of the
room, turning tables upside down and ea!ng snack on the floor. It
was truly a wacky day!
Next we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day by having a “tas!ng of the green”
party and a visit from the Leprechauns. Each child brought in a green
food that was tasted by the en!re group. We had everything from cilantro to avocados. What
were their favorite green foods? By a large margin the children chose Green jell-o and green
apples. This tasty ac!vity was enjoyed by all! The Leprechauns slipped into our classroom and
had lots of messy fun! They le$ their foot prints on the walls, win-
dows, tables, and mirrors, spilled the beads, read our books, and ate a
snack! The best ac!vity was finding the Leprechaun’s pot of gold. It was filled with gold choco-
late coins we could eat! It was a great way to end St. Patrick’s Day.
Where is the learning in these ac!vi!es you might ask? Green eggs and ham – cracking an egg,
using an egg beater, taking turns, watching the pudding thicken, and seeing a raw egg being
cooked. Tas!ng party – trying new foods – huge for children this age. The Pot of Gold game was
a rhyme. The children had to complete the rhyme to find the next clue. And, working together and having FUN are incred-
ible life lessons! So go ahead and have FUN with your children! “May your troubles be less and your blessings be more.
And nothing but happiness come through your door!”

Did You Know At the beginning of the Holy Thursday liturgy, the holy oils that were blessed by the bishop at the Chrism Mass are processed into the parish church. They will eventually be placed in our ambry, the glass storage case for sacred vessels, located on the wall near the vigil lights. The procession of the oils may be accompanied by a song of presenta!on wri+en for the oc-casion with a sung response by the assembly.

Catholic Social Thought "Increasing and fierce a+acks on conscience rights regard-ing abor!on cry out for an immediate remedy. Nurses and other health care providers and ins!tu!ons are being forced to choose between par!cipa!ng in abor!ons or leaving health care altogether. Churches and pro-life Amer-icans are being forced to provide coverage for elec!ve abor!ons—including late-term abor!ons—in their health care plans. Opponents and supporters of abor!on should be able to agree that no one should be forced to par!ci-pate in abor!on.
