Who Knew?

Who knew being the president was such a busy job and I don’t even have to worry about repealing healthcare, the chaos on the Korean peninsula, or the spies from the previous administration watching me from the trees surrounding my house! The Carolinas Austin-Healey Club is bustling with activity this winter with a change of the club’s logo and the ordering of new regalia, investigating sites for the 2018 Southeastern Classic, and several technical sessions focused on interior insulation and a spring tune-up of our classic Healeys happening next weekend. Add to that the upcoming calendar filled with activities that really take off in April with the Columbia, SC show, The Gathering at Shelton Vineyards and the Shelby show at the end of the month. Clearly, I am not getting paid enough to be the president and will bring this up at the next meeting.

Now Beth and I are starting to make some plans for going to Waco, Texas, in July that has us seriously considering shipping my newly restored 100M to one of the hottest states during one of the hottest months. In addition we have committed to join several other Healey enthusiasts from our club and the southeastern states to attend the 2017 Healey Week festivities in Monterey, California, in September where we will ship our cars out and drive on a ten-day tour to Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon and Glen Canyon National Parks. I am also involved in organizing an eight- day MGB drive out to San Diego in June. All these trips have the full encouragement and support of my chiropractor who is planning on buying a bigger home on the lake.

But that isn’t the end of our trips. In October we plan to make the drive over to Alabama for this year’s Southeastern Classic hosted by the Atlanta AHC on Lake Guntersville. This will be the second time the event has visited this spectacular location and those who attended the past event can attest how great the lodge and State Park were with wonderful views of the lake, golf course and surrounding mountains. We need to have a good showing to help our club promote our hosting of the 2018 Southeastern, so please check your calendars and join us.

Should we survive all these Healey and MG adventures and survive the pending impeachment movement being generated by my opposition within the membership, we’ll have a wonderful Christmas party in December where I get to pass off the gavel to Dennis Conley who is taking notes and will prove to be a great successor. I love politics and look forward to the next revelation of malfeasance within my administration that I can deny, ignore or spin around.

Happy Healeying,

Dick

March 2017MINUTES – CAHC – FERUARY 20, 2017

The Carolina Austin Healey Club met on Monday, February 20, 2017 with 29 members in attendance. Dick Lunney gave a big thank you for all the members who were present. He then went on to have a motion to accept the minutes from January as printed. They were accepted.

Fred Dabney gave the Treasurer’s report with a balance of $5,728.87. This balance does not include some outstanding checks. Priscilla Dabney told us our membership is at 99. A few members have not renewed as of yet.

Info on the Super Bowl party had 24 members present with Dick Lunney winning one of the pools and Linda Brown winning another. Dick hosted the Tech Session for the “Koolmat” heat mats and gave us a very favorable report and all 19 present enjoyed the session. Bill Walton spoke about the new venues for the Southeastern Classic we will be hosting in 2018. In Charleston we would be at the Wyndham Gardens Hotel. Patriots Point – USS Yorktown. Bill met with the event coordinator and the car show would be in the shadow of the ship. There would also be a water taxi downtown and possibly a cocktail party on the flight deck. The next venue would be Foley Beach, James Island State Park, and Hotel, The Tides. We could do a Low Country Boil or Oyster Roast. Suggestions appreciated. Ashville Crown Plaza is still in the running. The dates we are looking at would be September 20th - 23rd 2018.

Bill then showed us the new Regalia shirts available for the CAHC. He passed around an order sheet. This is for the shirts with our new logo. Golf shirts would be $23, Tee shirts, $8, Hats, $15. He can order any color and size of the logo. More info in the Newsletter.

There will be a Spring Tune-up Tech Session Saturday, March 25th at Elite Vehicle Restorations in Denver at 10:00 a.m. Charlie and Peggy Grobusky are still looking into dates for the trip to the Outer Banks. April brings the Tartan Day South/Carolina British Classic Car Show in Columbia, SC on March 31st - April 1st.

April 22nd “The Gathering” at the Shelton Winery – contact George & Marilyn Hege for info about meeting at Acropolis Diner for a caravan up to the vineyard, leaving at 9 a.m. April 29th The Broad River Classic in Shelby (Arts on the Square”. More information to follow.

Tech SessionClub RegaliaCarolinas AHC-New Club Logo

At our last club meeting we made a pitch to the members to invest in and wear more club regalia to help promote our Carolinas Healey Club as we travel to different British car and Healey events. We agreed on the new club logo and presented some samples. The response from club members was overwhelming! Members have already purchased 23 polos and T’s!

Many of you were not able to make the meeting so please email me your polo and T’s request. Hats, jackets, window stickers and other club regalia items with the new logo will be

released soon. Both men and women sizes are available in many colors. For now, all items will be at our cost. A separate order form is attached, or just email me with your order.

Polos are 6.5 oz, 100% combed ring-spun cotton preshrunk double pique knit, side seamed with side vents. Even thought they are preshrunk, I think they run a little smaller than

normal, so order your size accordingly. We are offering many colors in two styles: one with our club logo at only $23(by far the favorite), and on the right, with just the Healey wings

for only $20. Both have a British flag on the right sleeve.

$23.00 $20.00

T Shirts are also 100% cotton and come the Austin-Healey Wing on the front and our club logo on the back. T’s are $8.00

$8.00

Miscellaneous Tech tips

John Twist recommends using right Stuff” when replacing your valve cover gasket. Apply on the

valve cover side of the gasket. I suggest letting it cure for a few hours after placing the gasket on the valve cover. Use just oil between the gasket and

head. It worked great for me after I adjusted my

valves.

Brighten Your Nite Jack Porter offered a suggestion to me to improve the lights on my Healey. I installed

Wagner Halogens H6024’s. It made

a huge improvement to driving at nite.

Purchased from Advance Auto.

Finger Magnet Ever lose a small bolt,

screw, washer or nut while working on your LBC? Of

course you have! Jack Taylor recommends

“Magnetic Finger”. I have been using one for a few years and can attest to its usefulness. Going to order another one for a finger on

the other hand!

Electrical Problems? Reduce the risk of electrical problems by

making it a point to apply “Di-Electric Grease” to the connections every time you

check or replace electrical components. I

was chasing down an electrical problem last

week and was amazed at how many connections had crud/rust in them. Jerry Price suggest to not forget to apply to all

of the connections behind the grill. He uses

Di-Electric on key components as part of his long trip preparation.

Carolinas AHC Tech Session March 5, 2017

Dick Lunney had the well known British car mechanic, John Twist from Michigan conduct a very informative 6 hour course

on tuning a British car.

John reviewing the firing sequence prior to offering a few shortcuts to adjusting

the valves.

WISDOM “It makes no difference how quickly your MG will accelerate if it cannot stop! The proper functioning of your brakes must ALWAYS be at the top of your list of priorities. You owe this degree of safety to yourself, your passenger, and all others on the road.” John H. Twist (Fall, 1980)

SPRING TUNE UP MARCH 25TH AT 10:00 AM

Spring Tune-up Session   Spring has sprung several times this year and now we are ready for the chilly weather to be over...for good.  What better way to usher in Spring that a Austin-Healey inspection session at Elite Vehicle Restoration in Denver near Lake Norman.  Seth and his crew have cleaned the shop and have the lift ready to place your Healey on to check out the running gear before we head off to all the shows on our April calendar.  We’ll gather at the shop located at 914 Dove Court, just off US Route 16 Business at 10:00 AM and they’ll fire up the grill with hamburgers and hot dogs around noon.  The weather forecast looks great, so fire up the Healey and head to EVR for a great morning under our cars.  For more information, contact Dick Lunney at 704-578-4616.   Dick Lunney
