Happenings Remembers Dr. Becky Carlton, “Queen of the Hammond Organ”OOctober 2010, the Gospel music world changed forever. Dr. Becky M. Carlton, Queen of the Hammond Organ, was called home to join the great heavenly band. Dr. Carlton began playing the piano at the age of 5. She began her formal training at age 6, and was a child prodigy in Greensboro at that time. She attended West Chester University and University of Pennsylvania, receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees respectively. She is an honorary alumna of Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Florida. Because of her extensive work in music and education, she received an honorary DDoctorate of Humane Letters from National Theological Seminary. A former school teacher, Dr. Carlton served as principal of Sanctuary Christian Academy for nearly 25 years, retiring in 2003. AAn accomplished classical pianist and gospel musician, Dr. Carlton has recorded several solo albums, and as a recording studio musician, has accompanied many outstanding gospel artists. She was the rst female solo gospel organist to record for Savoy Recording Company, appeared in off-Broadway productions, and was an annual guest artist at the famous Apollo Theater in New York City for many years. Her recordings are listed in the New Center for Performing Arts at the Lincoln Library in New York City as accompanist for Empress Hazel Manley and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. As a recording artist for Folkways Records, her music is housed in Folklore departments, libraries, aarchives, colleges and universities across the United States and abroad. She has performed in many parts of the United States, Europe and other countries. Verna Gillis, a well-known folklorist, stated, "Becky Carlton's inspired organ playing contains the complete history of Black American music…She has a very orid and impeccable technique with the power to reveal the message through music." Dr. Carlton served as Minister of Music at Gospel Temple Church of God in Christ in New York City for fourteen years. After relocating to Philadelphia, PA, Bishop Audrey F. Bronson and Dr. Carlton cco-founded The Sanctuary Church of the Open Door and co-pastored for thirty-ve years. She founded several choirs over the years including the Chancel Choir, New Experience Youth Choir, Sanctuary Small Voices, Sanctuary Choir, Senior Choir, Male Chorus, Sanctuary Youth Mass Choir, Sanctuary Children's Choir, Voices for Christ, and Sanctuary Combined Choirs. A diligent worker, she served as Co-Pastor and Minister of Music. Dr. Carlton was a member of several professional organizations, and is listed in the United States Registry of "Who's Who Among American Educators," "Distinguished Church Musicians in the Unithe United States," and was inducted into the "African-American Legends Hall of Fame" in 1997. She was also a life-time member of the NAACP. Dr, Becky Carlton will be truly missed

The Gospel Music Preservation Alliance, Inc. (GMPA) is proud to host the Annual Board Meeting of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs & Choruses NCGCC. A mass choir has been formed to provide the music on Thursday, April 14, 2011. The guest speaker is Bishop Audrey F. Dr. Audrey F. Bronson, ordained minister and consecrated bishop, is founder and pastor of the Sanctuary Church of the Open Door. She was lead of the Lord to establish the Sanctuary Church of the Open Door in 1975. She also founded the Sanctuary Christian Academy in 1978, a private academic school from pre-school to fifth grade; the Sanctuary Bible Institute and the Sanctuary Counseling and Referral Center.Currently she serves on the board of the Philadelphia Industrial Currently she serves on the board of the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation and she is the first female to be elected President of Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity.Dr. Bronson, a native of Florida, comes from a family of ministers and educators. Dr. Bronson received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Cheyney University; a Masters degree in psychology from Howard University where she Masters degree in psychology from Howard University where she became a Ph.D candidate in psychology. She earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from New York Theological Seminary. She holds a Doctor of Divinity degree from Bethune-Cookman College and a Doctor of Humane Letters from the National Theological Seminary and College.On December 17, 1994, she was consecrated to the office of Bishop and now presides over many consecrated to the office of Bishop and now presides over many churches in the International Fellowship of Churches, Inc.The recipient of numerous honors and awards, Bishop Bronson is in demand as a speaker, panelist, television guest and consultant. She has a tremendous desire to bring about changes in the lives of her fellowman and faith in his ability to help himself. The Wilmington Chester Mass Choir (WCMC) celebrating 33 years in the music ministry and thanking God for winning two 2011 Stellar awards presented a musical celebration at the St. Luke CC church, Chester, PA six o’clock Sunday, February 20, 2011.

The nationally recognized Wilmington Chester Mass Choir The nationally recognized Wilmington Chester Mass Choir formed by the late Rev. Ernest Davis Jr. in 1978 recently received two 2011 Stellar awards for best choir and traditional choir of the year. Chris Squire, manager of the choir presented recognition awards to Maxine Stroud, business manager, Ms. Florence, and two local choirs whom Rev. Squire acknowledged had paved the way musically for WCMC. They were the Philadelphia Mass musically for WCMC. They were the Philadelphia Mass Choir and Victory Chorale Ensemble. Both awards were accepted by Bro. Gerald Wesson of the Savettes Chorale Ensemble. WCMC then ministered to the audience with selections from their new project as well as a few numbers from previous recordings. Near the end of the service, Rev. Squire asked the WCMC alumni that were service, Rev. Squire asked the WCMC alumni that were present in the audience to join in with the choir to sing a few selections. “Happenings” congratulates Rev. Christopher Squire and the members of the Wilmington Chester Mass Choir.
