Welcome Pastor Mark Cooper It is nice to be on board with you as your new

temporary pastor. I have already come to know you as

a fine congregation and I am looking forward to our

traveling with you in our walks of faith for these next

few months.

The period between pastors can seem like a time of

treading water. We must together do all we can to

prevent it from being that. This time can and must be a

productive time, when not only is your Pastor

Nominating Committee aggressively looking for a new

permanent pastor, but the church constructively

struggles with what it understands it is being called to

be in the new chapter ahead as it continues with the

ministries it already has in place. Most things will

continue relatively unchanged. The missions of the

church will go right on as they have been. The New

Beginnings process will continue. Church school and

Bible study and Sunday morning worship will continue

uninterrupted. And, you have a pastor in place who will

do his best to continue the work expected of the pastor

to the best of his abilities. If you need me, call. I am

available.

Perhaps most of all, let us all remember to pray. Pray

for Firelands Presbyterian as it negotiates this time in its

history. Pray that it will be sensitive to God’s leading as

it seeks to minister in this time and place. And, please,

pray for your new temporary pastor as he seeks to know

best how to handle his role in this time.

Blessings,

Mark

The Julia Somsen Quayle Memorial Concert

The Westhuizen

Duo

Pierre and Sophie

van der

Westhuizen in a

vibrant program

for piano, four

hands.

Accommodations

are provided by

Our Guest Inn. Following the concert, there will be a

reception for the audience to meet the artists. Tickets

are available at the door for $15 ($12 for Firelands

members, Vineyard & Otterbein residents); students are

admitted free of charge.

Firelands Family Dinner Reserve the date of March 13 6:30 PM for our family

dinner. Connie Brand is our hostess and watch for the

signup sheet on the gathering table.

Oops! Please Pay Per Capita Last year in January we asked all our members to

contribute an extra $30 toward both their “per capita”—

the amount we pay for each member to support the

Presbyterian Church (USA) on the regional and national

levels—and the cost of offering envelopes. Many of you

did so, which was an enormous help toward our 2014

budget.

This year we meant to ask the same thing in January,

but somehow we missed doing so. So … would you

please add $30 to your offering one of these next few

weeks and mark it as “Per Capita”? You may want to

use the buff-colored envelope in your box marked Initial

Offering Envelope.

Angel Gift Cards Remember the “Angel Window” note cards from the

early 90’s?? They sold out quite quickly! We are

offering a re-printing of them in now in packs of 6 for

$6.00 or 12 for $10.00.” All proceeds will go to the

General Fund of Firelands Church. Packets of cards are

on the gathering table.

Lenten Banner Journey of Jesus to

Jerusalem

Our new Lenten Banner

was made by Anita Fisher.

Take a close look and see

where Jesus started his

Journey to Jerusalem and

how it ended.

Preschool Notes February has been a busy month for our students and

teachers. We learned about our teeth and how to take

care of them. We practiced brushing and flossing

pretend teeth and talked about good foods and bad

foods. We soaked

"teeth" in pop and

juice to see what too

much sugar will do

to our teeth. We

even had a special

visitor from the

dentist office come

in and teach us

about keeping out teeth clean. We spent a whole week

talking about love and Valentines. The kids had a great

time celebrating with Valentine cards, delicious treats,

and Valentine themed games. We also learned about

President's Day and celebrated Chinese New Year! We

spent a few days learning about opposites. We named

opposites, sang songs, and sorted objects. We ended

the month with a dinosaur theme: a favorite of both

kids and teachers. We learned about dinosaurs and

fossils. We created and named our own dinosaurs.

Thank you to Mrs. D for coming in to read and sing with

us. The preschoolers always look forward to their time

with her!

The Story of Matthews Boats by Bob Reynolds, grandson of

Scott Matthews In 1890, Scott J. Matthews founded the Matthews

Boat Company in Bascom, Ohio. Fifteen years later,

in 1906, Matthews, designed and built a 70 foot

yacht. This vessel was capable of taking himself, and

family of four, plus two others, on a 9,000 mile trip.

The adventure, of almost one year, transversed the

eastern half of the United States, which is now

referred to as the "Great Loop" . This trip was a

"first" for a private yacht and its success resulted in

moving the Matthews Company to Port Clinton in

1906. This past year, in collaboration with the

Maritime Museum of Sandusky, a documentary was

made. It includes many of the original photos taken

along the way. The narrative is based on the written

account of Scott Matthews.

This video production will be presented by Bob

Reynolds, grandson of Scott Matthews, 2:00 pm,

Sunday March 1, at the Sutton Center, East Perry

Street, Port Clinton, Ohio.
