More than 400 primary and secondary

children took part in 47 classes

incorporating Manx music, dance, poetry

and song. New this year was a category

for the viola. Individuals and groups took

part using the Fiddyl Vooar pack provided

by the Manx Heritage Foundation.

The winning children received vouchers for

Manx National Heritage site shops.

The awards have been jointly organised by

the Department of Education and

Children, the Manx Heritage Foundation

and Manx National Heritage.

Jo Callister, advisory teacher for the Manx

Curriculum, said: ‘We would like to thank

all the schools who took part in the

competitions this week.

‘Both the pupils and their teachers have

worked very hard in such a short half term

to pull everything together. Without all

their hard work there wouldn't be any

competitions!

‘Many thanks also to the adjudicators who

had the unenviable task of choosing the

winners from such a high standard of

competitors.’

Making his Mark in the central team

In fact, a candidate in the forthcoming by-election in Douglas West has already inquiredafter the intentions of the NMTABB Party andwhether we shall be fielding a candidateourselves.

Of course, he could have been fishing for anendorsement, but I suspect not.

The truth is, we have yet to decide whether weshould put forward a candidate in Douglas West.Part of the problem is that Douglas Westincludes a number of high profile bus routes, which could mean the main article ofconstitution would be difficult to abide by.

Besides, there is an awful lot more organising tobe done in my loft at the moment – running anelection campaign would get in the way of that.

Speaking of lofts, it’s amazing what you findwhen you go in them, aside from evidence tosuggest that the intimidatingly large arachnidsthat occasionally appear down below are, in fact, just the babies of much larger beasts lurkingabove. (Confirmation of this comes from a newsarticle about the shed skin of a Chilean RoseTarantula in the boards of a house in Wales.)

Aside from that, however, I’ve lived in this housefor the best part of the decade and have justdiscovered that we have another step ladder. As

it was in the loft for years before we got the loftladder installed, I wonder how the previousowner of that step ladder actually got downfrom the roof space. (A cursory check concludedthey weren’t still there.)

While looking for something else, I discoveredmy old exam certificates. These were from thelast year of O-levels, those exams that weredeemed outdated and unfair up until recentlywhen the UK education secretary Michael Govedecided he wanted to resurrect them like amalevolent vampire ready to feast on newvictims.

Fortunately someone broke out the garlic andthe exam reform was deemed a step too far,

But what now seems rather quaint is that myexam certificates were produced using a manualtypewriter. Now that must have been a fun jobfor someone at the exam board.

Considering there was a clerical error on mymaths exam that was only corrected after aprotest, it was a relief to see that liquid paperwas not used on the certificate.

It wouldn’t look good for an electioncandidate…
