Best of Me...Stephen McClements

Best meal (cooked by you or byanother):

Definitely nothing I have ever

attempted to cook.Whilst holidaying in America Idiscovered the delights of thepulled pork sandwich togetherwith a side of sweet potato fries:highly recommended, from Gilleysin Las Vegas.

Best outfit or single piece ofclothing:

My TT Media bib! It means mymedia accreditation application hasbeen successful. For two weeks Ican enjoy capturing and sharingimages worldwide from the racingwhilst promoting the island.

Best memory:

I was fortunate as a child to spendmy school holidays travelingaround Europe with my dad, following the motorcycle racingWorld Championship. As hepassed away a few years agothese memories are very special tome.

Best way to spend the day:Get up early for a couple of hours’cycling. Then watching motorcycleracing sat on a hedge with mycamera and an unlimited supply ofsandwiches, before finishing with atrip to the pub with friends.

Best advice:Live life with no regrets. From a photography perspective, having turned up for one TTpractice with no memory cards:failure to prepare is preparing tofail.

Best place in the Isle of Man:Having been bitten by the cyclingbug recently, each ride is anopportunity to discover a newplace. Currently on a sunny day,the view going through Dalby outtowards Niarbyl is my favourite, unlike the climb, which is lessfavourable.

Stephen is a local amateur photographer, specialising in motorcycle racing. He has achieved accreditation for local roadraces, British Superbikes, World Superbikes and Moto GP at circuits across the world. Most recently his images have beenpublished in the official TT 2014 programme and Guy Martin’s autobiography. You can view his work atwww.ajsimages.co.uk

If you see one of The HumanLeague’s famous trio of singersshed a tear at the Villa Marina onFriday night – don’t worry, itmeans the show has been asuccess. The legendary band plays the Douglas venuewith the promise of a succession of hits thatinfluenced an entire generation. There isunlikely to be anyone in their forties whodoesn’t remember the pained story of a jiltedlover in Don’t You Want Me, writes PaulSpeller.Susan Ann Sulley is the singer who, in theclassic hit, was working as a waitress in acocktail bar. Despite what many would like tobelieve, that was an occupation she never hadin real life – she left school to join the band at17 and admits she has never had a ‘real job’.The band can still pack out venues and Susanadmits it can be an emotional experiencewhen everything goes right and she has criedmore than once.‘The first time we played V Festival, I went tosing my verse of Don’t You Want Me and I juststopped because the crowd sang it soperfectly without me and I just burst into tears!‘Those moments are spectacular andprecious,’ she told the Manx Advertiser. The Human League was formed by lead singerPhil Oakey in 1977 but hit the big time with

the album Dare in 1981, after he recruitedSusan and her school friend Joanne Catherallto become singers in a reformatted group.Hit after hit followed, with the likes of MirrorMan, Fascination, Lebanon, One Man in MyHeart and Tell Me When showing a durabilitythat has helped sustain a career over morethan 30 years.Susan was quick to stress, however, the bandwas more than just the three of them.‘We have got a proper band that we have

worked with for 20 years. We couldn’t and wewouldn’t do it on our own. We are a properlive group. We wouldn’t do it if we had to singto backing tracks.‘It is not just Phil and the girls, it never reallyhas been.‘We were the face of it for the media manyyears ago because it was us at the front and, sometimes, for the media it is easier to putthree people on the cover instead of seven.’Looking through the back catalogue of TheHuman League’s videos and televisionappearances, one thing that strikes me is howserious they all looked.I asked if that was part of the image orwhether it was always that intense for them.‘One of the reasons we are still here is that itwas never a joke to us,’ said Susan. ‘It wasdeadly serious.’A Sheffield girl at heart, she has retained herdown-to-earth take on life. When asked what

the Susan of today would tell that 17-year-oldgirl all those years ago, she said she doubtedher teenage self would listen anyway.‘It was fantastic fun,’ she said. ‘We had a greattime and we got to go to all these fantasticplaces.‘The unfortunate thing was we were so famousat the time we couldn’t get to see any ofthem. That is why we all like touring so muchnow, because we get to go to the mostfantastic places in the world and no one takesany notice of us, apart from the 90 minutes onthe stage.‘I think I would probably do it all againbecause if you changed one thing I probablywouldn’t be talking to you now.’ • The Human League’s show at the Villa

Marina, Douglas, is on Friday (May 30).Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are £35.70.Contact villagaiety.com

It’s that TTime of the year again

Win a bike helmet signedby race acesManx Cancer Help isholding a tombola towin a TT helmet signedby many of the topracers on the MountainCourse.Tickets, at £1, can be boughtfrom the Sure store at the TTGrandstand.

Money raised from ticket saleswill go towards the charity and,in addition to the unique signedmotorbike helmet, there’s asecond place prize of a Moto Gphone from Sure and a thirdprize of two Citywing returnflights.

The prize draw will take placeon Senior Race Day.

Founded in 1989, Manx CancerHelp has been supportingpeople of the Isle of Mandealing with the emotional andpsychological impact of cancerfor more than 30 years.

The latest statistics suggest thatevery two minutes someone inthe UK is diagnosed with cancerand that one in three peoplewill develop cancer in someform during their lifetime.

A cancer diagnosis is adaunting, stressful and scarytime. The impact and effectsuch a diagnosis may have willvary, but can be far-reachingand at times overwhelming. While the physical health needsand treatment of patients is metby traditional medical services, the emotional effects of cancerare equally as important. The charity’s Lisa Lowe Centreis based in Cronkbourne, lessthan a mile from Noble’sHospital. It is a warm andcalming space that has beendesigned to ease the distress ofcancer the minute that you walkthrough the door.A charity spokesman said: ‘AtManx Cancer Help werecognise the impact thatcancer can have not only on theindividual, but also on lovedones, friends and familymembers and we welcomeanyone in need of our support.‘As a registered charity we offerfreely a range of servicesincluding practical, emotionaland psychological support aswell as a growing portfolio ofcomplementary therapies and alibrary service.’www.manxcancerhelp.org

By the time you read this, the TTwill be revving up to full throttle.

Yes, the smell of deep fried onions willpervade, the annual debate about thefunfair will once more be raging (for thosein doubt, remember how quiet the promsounded without it), and, for two weeks, adonut ceases to be something you eat.

Many will dust off a biker’s jacket that hasbeen in hibernation since last year andhead out to sample the atmosphere.

Some non-bikers will proclaim solemnly, ina change of stance that would leave eventhe porcine leaders of Animal Farm feelingred-faced: ‘Four wheels good, two wheelsbetter.’

Shops which have absolutely nothing todo with motorcycling will, inexplicably, have a Superbike in their window display.

Headline writers, columnists and scribeswill dig out their book of motorcyclingclichés. Members of the media will relish adoubling of their audience and a greaterfreedom to use innuendo.

High viz tabards will become a badge ofcoolness, especially when paired with alanyard. It doesn’t matter that passcontained within grants you access tonothing more than the competitively

priced T-shirt stalls behind theGrandstand, if you wear dark glasses andcarry yourself with an impressive level ofaloofness, you’ll look like An ImportantOfficial. Just don’t try to do anything otherthan sneak ahead of the queue at the icecream van.

The best part of it all is the Island iscoming alive with the thousands of verywelcome visitors to our shores.

I once tried to explain, to a first time TTvisitor, the atmosphere of a crowdedpromenade during the fortnight and thebest I could come up with was that it waslike heading up the concourse at Wembleyfor a football match and discovering thateveryone is supporting your team.

I may not be able to make it down toBushy’s beer tent every night any morebut you can guarantee that the oneevening when the babysitter has beenbooked (so we can go and see The HumanLeague), will entail a pre-gig pint, and apost-show stroll along the seafront to soakup the buzz from a TT weekend and seekout the best hot dog.

So, enjoy the atmosphere, savour theracing and remember to stay safe.

GUIDEBring on the TT fun!The government’s TTentertainment chiefs havedecided to spread the free funthis year.Rather than focusing nearly all the action inDouglas for TT 2014, the Department ofEconomic Development’s motosport teamhas chosen to distribute the action morewidely, recognising that more people arefinding places to stay outside the capital.

The TT Mayhem show will be touring theIsland over seven nights, from Saturday (May31) to Senior Race Day (Friday, June 6).

The show will feature the Infernal VaranneSplitter Ball and Monster Energy's MotoTrials display by Fred Crosset, plus plenty ofloud music, giveaways and crowdparticipation.

It all gets underway on Saturday, May 31, atthe Villa Marina Gardens, with live actionrunning until 8pm.

Peel Promenade is the venue for MadSunday (June 1), as part if the Peel TT Dayand then it is on to Port Erin on June 2 tocoincide with Port Erin TT Day.

This year also sees the introduction of a livemusic stage in the Villa Marina which will

play host to local bands onJune 4 and 5, culminating inthe PokerStars closing partyand fireworks on June 6.These events will also featureinterviews with leading riderson stage and the Senior TTprize giving following Friday'srace.

Douglas seafront itself will still have plenty ofaction. The funfair returns to tomorrow(Thursday, May 29) and runs until June 8.

Non-government organisations also provideplenty of fun. As well as the famous Bushy’sbeer tent and its live music on the prom atthe bottom of Victoria Street, the brewery isputting on a live music stage at Port Erinbeach from May 29-June 7.

Other major events around the Island includethe Ramsey Sprint on June 3 and LaxeyMotorcycle Show on June 5

David Cretney, the MHK in charge of tourismand motorsport, said: ‘Prior to myappointment, the department picked out anumber of well attended events around theIsle of Man and is adding to the TTentertainment to further enhance them.

‘This not only means that the events arebetter attended but also that more of theIsland's towns will get to experience thebenefits of the official TT festival.’
