By RANDOR GUY

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 26Most persons in the film industry, whether they are actors,

screenwriters, music composers or whatever, are often temptedto try their hand in film production which is a different ball gamewith its own ruleswhich are not clearly defined even today.

As somebody commented, film production is a gamble andno one knows whether a particular film will do well at the boxoffice or notand bring home the moolah or the bacon. Thecelebrated Hollywood movie mogul Harry Cohn, the boss ofColumbia Pictures, was once asked by a critic whether therewas any formula to predict the success at the box office for amovie. With his characteristic cynical sense of humour andrugged common sense, he said that only two people couldpredict the success of a film. First, a producer who can makehis film a success by buying up all the tickets for all the showsin the world! Second, the biggest idiot in Christendom can doit! There is considerable wisdom in ‘King’ Cohn’s dictum!

The Tamil moviemusic charmer G. Ramanathan was alsotempted to try his hand in film production and promoted acompany under the name and style of Sarovodaya Productions. He made ‘Pudhu Vaazhvu’ (1957)as his first film with M. K. T.Bhagavathar in the lead.

Expectedly, Ramanathan composed the music along with C.N. Pandurangam who had been active as a music composer forsome time. The story and dialogues were written by the old-timer and top screenwriter of Tamil cinema, Elangovan whohad written hits for Bhagavathar, A. K. Velanand othersearlier.

Lyrics were written by Papanasam Sivan, Thanjai RamaiahDas, A. Marudhakasi, Nataraja Sundaram andSaravanabhavananda. Also songs of Jothi RamalingaSwamigal and Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar were added.

Expectedly Bhagavathar sang most of the songs as solo andas duets with P. Leela. In one song, somewhat interestingly,Jikki sang along with Bhagavathar. (Radha)Jayalakshmialso sang a solo song.

The film was photographed by the well-known lensman ofthe day R. Sampath while Hiralal, Sohanlal and Madhavancomposed the dances.

Bhagavathar’s brother M. K. Shanmugam was in charge ofthe production and the film was shot at Newtone Studios.

Surprisingly, Bhagavathar directed the movie with hardlyany experience in that technique.

The film had many melodious songs, mostly rendered byThyagaraja Bhagavathar. There were song and dancesequences for which he sang for Kumari Thulasi and MadhuriDeviand, for another song, Lalitha danced. The famousBharathiyar song ‘Sutrum vizhi sudar thaan Kannamma’ wasrendered as a raagamaalika by Bhagavathar in hischaracteristic melodious style and verve. The song was a hitand sold well as gramophone disc or ‘plate’ as it was known inthose days.

Somewhat interestingly, Bhagavathar sang a short song inwhich he combined lines from popular melodies of earlier yearsin Hindi which included ‘Aawara hoon’ (from Raj Kapoor’sclassic ‘Aawara‘), ’Dadada dadada’ (from the hit movie ‘Ek ThiLadki’with the top star of his dayMotilal and Meenakshi. Thissong was a super hit and gave rise to the expression ‘DappaSangeetham’). Bhagavathar’s singing such a song surprisedhis ardent fans and even critics.

The story was somewhat predictable about Vaikuntam(MKT) living in a village singing and in love with Nagammal(Lalitha). Her brother did not like the budding romance and oneday he ties him up to a tree. Going along that way, a rich womanSubha (Madhuri Devi) saves him. Drawn to him, she takes himto the city where she promotes him as a singer under a newname ‘Geethamani’, gathering fame and fortune. He forgetshis past blinded by the good fortune and fame and insults hisaged poor parents and calls them beggars.

Nagammal too is shocked and tries to commit suicide byjumping into a river. However soon Geethamani realises hismistakes. How he is reconciled with his parents and Nagamaniformed the rest of the story and film.

Krishnan and Mathuram expectedly sing a comical duet.In spite of the melodious songs excellently rendered by

Bhagavathar, the film flopped at the box office, landingRamanathan in huge monetary loss.

Songs from this movie are worth listening to even after morethan a half-century. Unfortunately, none of the filmsBhagavathar made after his release from prison as an echo ofthe sensational Lakshmikantham Murder Case fared well atthe box-office.

KEJRIWAL IN BENGALURUFor naturopathy, Bengaluru is the new,

fancy indigenous capital as diagnosed bythe muffler-man of Delhi State which wasswept by the fledgling AAP in its secondcoming.

The triumvirate of Aravind, Yogendraand Prashanth seemed attuned to a newthrust gauged by their storming of the pollsleaving a miserly three seats to others.

But even after rising from the ashes, theAAP doesn’t seem to have risen above inter-nal squabbles that threaten to weaken theirValentine Day pledge to the people of Delhiafter having broken off with them and dis-solving the loose-mixed government on theprevious Valentine Day in 2014 after abrief, intense 49 day love affair! ButKejriwal, the chief, this time too fell avictim to the inclement Delhi winter thatpierced his muffler, leaving him with apersistent cough that rendered him speech-less.

It seems a peculiar curse that Kejriwal isnot able to keep infections at bay. Thedecision to go down to the benevolent Southto oust the thunder-causing element fromhis system should be the precursor to manygreat revolutionary attempts that he wouldlaunch, once his patented cap does not getblown off by the cough barrage. And whilegetting rid of the niggling irritants in histhroat, he seems to have neatly avoidedlooking his erstwhile friends and co-foundersof his party, Yogendra and Prashanth, inthe eye while the executive committee re-lieved them of their posts. The broom seemsto have a lot to sweep under the carpet!

When the kind Bengaluru rids Kejri ofhis cough and he returns to the capital andhis office as the chief, his contingent ofenthusiastic followers, meanwhile havingused the brooms to Swaach Delhi and itsenvirons of corruption, we the people ofIndia may find the Kejri-way to health, wealth and happiness, the best naturalcure for our sick society’s ills, geographicalborders notwithstanding.

And who knows: perhaps we may also hitpay dirt by finding the mysteriously miss-ing Rahul Gandhi “introspecting” upon thesize zero result of his party in the Delhipolls at the same Naturopathy centre inBengaluru! Maybe Kejri and Rahul willmeet over a herbal Chai Pe Charcha andRahul Baba may come away from the meetwiser on how to win at least one seat in anelection and also how to cleverly use acough as a punctuation while making aspeech!!

Auto driver harasses old ladySir, The other day, my friend was privy to an

incident when an old lady was trying to catch anauto near Sharma Park (Habibullah Road) tovisit a temple a kilometer away. When shestopped an empty auto, the driver demandedRs. 70. When she told him to charge as permeter, he refused. Seeing the plight of the ladymy friend tried to help her. When he warned thedriver that he will lodge a complaint with thepolice, the driver was least bothered and in-stead said that he too had connections in thepolice. The driver also had the audacity in notallowing the old lady to hire other autos byshooing away the vehicles and threateningthose drivers. Finally after close to 15 minutes, the driver drove away and the old lady managedto find an auto that agreed to charge as per themeter. – V.N.S. Jayaraman, Motilal Street,T. Nagar

LETTERS TO THEEDITOR

Demand to turn Usman Road servicelane into an auto stand unwarranted

Sir, This refers to the road roko resorted toby auto-rickshaw drivers outside R1Mambalam Police Station, T. Nagar, last weekdemanding that they be permitted to parktheir vehicles along Usman Road service lanesand close it to vehicular traffic. Even at present,a number of auto drivers are misusing theeastern side service lane of Usman Road forparking their vehicles. By resorting to roadroko, the drivers are only trying to get an officialsanction. The service lanes are already nar-row and if autos are allowed to park on them itwill cause heavy traffic jams and also causehardship to pedestrians. Further, if the servicelanes are closed to vehicular traffic to enableparking of autos and private vehicles (as de-manded by the auto drivers), the residents ofthe side streets will be put to untold hardship, for they will have to take detours to reach theirhomes. As it is, the western end of the servicelane is encroached upon by roadside vendorspreventing vehicular movement. The en-croachment on this lane is such that evenwalking has become impossible. The residentsof side streets of the western end service laneare facing acute problems because of theencroachment. The demand by the auto driv-ers is unfair and should not be conceded to.— K.Sreenivasan, 16, Ramaswamy Street, T.Nagar

Say no to extortion by LPGdelivery men

Sir, It is a standard norm to tip the LPGdelivery person more out of goodwill. The amountof tip is up to the consumer and the deliveryperson has no right of demand. The other daythe delivery person demanded Rs. 40 as tip fordelivering the refill to my neighbour and refusedto accept anything less. He also threatenedthat if he was not paid the demanded amount,he will cause difficultly in future refills.

My neighbour rightly refused to pay any tipand lodged a complaint with the area managerof the oil company. The matter was later sortedout in favour of the consumer. Such incidentsare common place and many a consumer fallsprey to the demands of the delivery man.—V.S.Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar
