100 BILLION - BUT NOT A BAILOUT!IT’S NOT A BAILOUT - IT’S A LOAN... HONEST!

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy struck a defiant note in a news conference at his La Moncloa residence at midday today, less than 24 hours after Spain had accepted a European Union bailout for the country’s banks. Focusing on the fact that the rescue package, which may reach the 100-billion-euro mark, was for the financial system and not to shore up the government, Rajoy said that “if we had not done our homework, it would have been an intervention of the Kingdom of Spain that was on the table instead of a guaranteed credit line.”“Yesterday the European project and the euro gained credibility, as well as the solidity of the financial system so that credit starts to flow once more,” the Popular Party leader said.On the succession of denials from ministers that a rescue package was imminent, Rajoy commented that his government’s strategy had been to avoid “semantic debates” at all times. Avoiding terms such as bailout, the prime minister limited himself to saying that “Europe will put a credit line at the disposition of the financial entities.”“The events of yesterday,” Rajoy added, “form part of the plan for the cleaning up of the Spanish economy,” insisting that “without credit, there is no investment; without investment, there are no jobs.” The decision to prepare a bailout, Rajoy said, “sends a clearly defined message: the euro is an irreversible project, very good for Europe and very good for Spain.” He claimed that “no one has pressured me; it was me doing the pressuring because I wanted a credit line.”“It was not easy, but Europe rose to the circumstances and that is very comforting.”Speaking just over an hour later, the leader of the main opposition Socialist Party, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, said that the bailout was “bad news for Spain,” and that there was a need for “profound reflection” on the “errors” that had taken place in

Spain’s financial system in order to answer the questions of citizens. Action was required, he added, to ensure that ordinary Spaniards “who had had

nothing to do” with the banking débâcle would not suffer ill-effects from the conditions imposed along with the bailout.Once ongoing independent audits of Spain’s financial system have been completed, the rescue package will be made available in tranches by Brussels to Spain’s Orderly Bank Restructuring Fund (FROB) in the form

of credits at three-percent interest. The IMF will oversee how the funds are disbursed.

FROM THE DUGOUT WITH ANDY DIXONThis weeks from the dugout might ruffle a few feathers because it’s about Racism. Racism in football as in life is not

needed nor wanted but sadly it does still exist, many years ago I had a great friend who played for Walsall Football Club, his mom was mixed race and he was born and bred in the UK, he once made the national papers in the UK for confronting a set of opposition fans. When I asked him what he said to them his answer was lovely, “they were chanting go back to where you’re from so I went over and said to them why? I don’t like Torquay that’s why I left”. The odd thing is the fans in question did not understand his response, maybe they were too stupid to insult. This weekend is the start of the Euros (yippee, sorry) and already we have a problem with racism on a number of levels firstly the black players that represent Holland have been subjected to monkey chants during training sessions. Do the people doing this not realise that if the theory of evolution is correct, we all come from monkeys so really they are having a go at their own History, crikey these people make nascar fans look smart (their making a left turn, of course they are, Muppets).Secondly there is a split opinion in Fifa as some players have said if they are given racist abuse

during a game they will leave the pitch which in my mind is fair enough but Sepp Blatter (president of Fifa) has said players doing this will be booked which at the very least is a strange opinion to have, but sense has been seen by

Michael Platini who has said that any referees who sees players being racially abused can call an end to the game and lead the players of the pitch. Well done to you sir sense at last! When we were kids we had no idea what the word Racism meant, at school my four closest friends and they still are today were a white lad called Lewis, 2 west Indian guys called Roy and Matthew, and an Asian kid called Satnam, we all used to meet at my mom’s house on a Sunday morning before going off to play football and mom as all moms do would have to feed us all before we went out, week after week my mom in all innocence would say to Satnam “do you want a bacon sandwich love?” “MOM he’s a Muslim”, I’d say and she just used to reply “I don’t care what he is he’s not leaving here without something to eat”. She had no idea...

Until next week be nice to each other Andy Dixon

Vampire-slaying kit up for auction

in yorkshire

The box contains a prayer book and vampire slaying equipment A Victorian vampire-slaying kit is expected to fetch £2,000 at an auction in North Yorkshire. The 19th Century box contains a crucifix, pistol, wooden stakes and mallet, as well as glass bottles containing holy water, holy earth and garlic paste. The box was left to a Yorkshire woman in her uncle’s will.Oonagh Drage of Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, said she had not seen anything like it before.Ms Drage said the kit was probably made in the late 1800s and was possibly inspired by the popularity of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula.“It’s probably a novelty thing. It’s playing to people’s superstitions.”As well as the weaponry, the box holds a copy of the Book of Common Prayer from 1851 and a handwritten extract from the Bible which quotes Luke 19:27.It reads: “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.”The box goes on auction later this month.

Robotic fish work together to detect pollution in ports and other areas.

The fish are the work of Shoal, a pan-European ICT project made up of six organisations and partly funded by the European Union.Luke Speller, project leader and a senior research scientist at the London-based BMT Group, said: “The fish can identify the source of pollution enabling prompt and more effective remedial action.”

The yellow-coloured robotic fish are 1.5 metres (five feet) long and are driven by a dual-hinged tail that enables them to make tight turns. They are battery powered and can run for up to eight hours before they need to be recharged. Each one has a range of sensors and programming that allows it to navigate and gather information which it can share with other fish and relay back to researchers. The fish can work together to find pollutantsMr Speller said: “Chemical sensors

fitted to the fish permit real-time in-situ analysis, rather than the current method of sample collection and dispatch to a shore based laboratory.“Furthermore, the Artificial Intelligence which has been introduced means that the fish can identify the source of pollution enabling prompt and more effective remedial action.”Working in a group, the fish can cover up to one square kilometre of water up to a depth of 30 metres.Importantly, says Shoal, they are able to blend into the undersea

environment without disrupting any of the marine life there.Mr Speller said: “Shoal has seen the coming together of scientists from across Europe to create a system that could not have been achieved without collaboration between different disciplines.“One of the greatest achievements of Shoal is getting robots running outside the lab and in the harsh, dynamic conditions of the sea.“Autonomously exploring and investigating the harbour, the fish can work together to monitor and track down sources of pollution.”

GOING OUTan old feel to one of city’s

newest bars

Vintage Santa Catalina, Av. Argentina 11, 07013 Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Not many years ago the strip between the Paseo Marítimo and Carrer de Sant Magi was no more than the uninspiring end of calle Argentina, a place you wouldn’t have given a second glance. Nowadays it’s the buzzing gateway to Santa Catalina and the latest addition to its nightlife, the Vintage Santa Catalina bar, brings a new element to the atmosphere.

This cute bar’s mid-20th century retro theme and décor have been carefully planned by owners NIka Starostka and Agata Mikulska. It has the cosiness of a friend’s living room and there’s a welcome to match. In its charming way, the furniture doesn’t match, but each piece complements the rest; the gorgeous flocked wallpaper, quite unlike anything you’ll see

in the average Palma bar, has been imported from northern Europe; the swathes of curtain draped across the room give the feeling of a grand place to be and to be seen.

But snap back to today and the freshly-made, elegantly presented, bang up-to-date cocktails that you can enjoy in these interesting surroundings. The menu lists old favourites and modern twists. There are bruschettas available if you want a nibble. Everything is served with a smile and the closest attention to detail.

As you sit on Vintage Santa Catalina’s terrace, watching the world go by, sipping your cocktail – raspberry daiquiri, mojito, whatever takes your fancy – you have to marvel at the melding of old and new in this mallorcan city of ours.

Always service with a smile from Nika and Agata
