Enjoy the gastronomy of the Cala Millor Fusion and the hospita-lity of the island’s inhabitants. And when the tournament is over we invite everyone to return to enjoy our little piece of paradise.

Due to hard work and to an excel-lent team of collaborators we’ve managed to go the distance. It hasn’t been easy but with team-work and the understanding of my family, especially my two sons Ian and Teo, we feel that we are com-ing into our own. Being the only golf magazine on the island should have it’s advantages but we have found that the public in general still needs to be educated about the advantages of golf in the island’s economic fabric.

For kids, summer golf programs will be beginning soon at most golf courses, some even include language instruction and comple-mentary services. Now is the time to check at a course near you. And for those who have never played or would like to brush up, the courses offer an incredible choice of golf instruction taught by professionally trained PGA instructors.

I would like to give special thanks to IBATUR for regularly including Mallorca Golf & Go! in their golf promotion packages at such im-portant international golf events as IGTM and Rheingolf.

Und nach dem Turnier sind Sie herzlich eingeladen, dieses kleine Stück Paradies erneut zu besuchen.

Mit viel Arbeit und dank hervor-ragender Mitarbeiter haben wir diese Ausgabe wieder einmal bis zum Ende durchgezogen. Das war nicht einfach, aber mithilfe des Teams und der Unterstützung meiner Familie, insbesondere meiner beiden Söhne Ian und Teo, ist es uns gelungen. Dass wir das einzige Fachmagazin für Golf auf der Insel sind, sollte die Sache eigentlich einfacher machen. Doch die Bedeutung des Golfsports für die regionale Wirt-schaft ist vielen hier einfach noch nicht hinreichend bekannt.

In vielen Clubs der Insel begin-nen bald die ersten Golf-Ferien-lager für Kids, einige von ihnen werden mit Sprachunterricht kombiniert oder bieten zusätzli-che Freizeitaktivitäten an. Es ist also Zeit, sich über das Kursan-gebot in einem nahe gelegenen Club Ausschau zu informieren. Insbesondere für absolute An-fänger gibt es eine unglaubliche Auswahl an Möglichkeiten, das Golfspiel zu erlernen. Professi-onelle PGA-Lehrer stehen den Schützlingen dabei stets hilfreich zur Seite.

ofi cial del Primer Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca. Les damos la bienvenida a nuestra isla a todos esos fantásticos jugadores profe-sionales que van a participar y les deseamos mucha suerte. Podrán deleitarse con la gastronomía de Cala Millor Fusion y la hospi-talidad mallorquina. Y cuando ya el torneo haya fi nalizado, les invitamos a todos a volver para disfrutar de este pequeño pedazo del Paraíso.

Como resultado de un arduo trabajo de un equipo excelente de colaboradores, hemos podido llegar hasta aquí. No ha sido fácil, pero con este equipo y la com-prensión de mi familia, especial-mente de mis dos hijos, Ian y Teo, tenemos la sensación de que este proyecto ya está fraguado.Ser la única revista de Golf de Ba-leares debería tener sus ventajas, pero nos damos cuenta que el público en general todavía necesi-ta comprender mejor las ventajas que el Golf aporta al tejido econó-mica de Baleares.

Los programas de verano para niños pronto van a comenzar en la mayoría de los campos. Algunos de ellos incluyen clases de idiomas y servicios comple-mentarios. Ahora es el momento de averiguarlo en el campo que esté más cercano. Y para aquellos que nunca han jugado pero que les gustaría hacerlo, los campos ofrecen una increíble variedad de posibilidades con profesores profesionales de la PGA. Me gustaría agradecer especial-mente a IBATUR por incluir regularmente Mallorca Golf & Go! en sus paquetes promocionales en eventos internacionales tan importantes como IGTM y Rheingolf.

Welcome message for Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca

Absence, so the saying goes, makes the heart grow fonder, and that is especially true for The European Tour as we return to the superb Pula Golf Club

this week. We last visited Pula Golf in 2007 and it is a pleasure to be back on the beautiful island of Mallorca to spend time with some old friends and to make the ac-quaintance of some new ones. In particular, we welcome a new title sponsor in Iberdrola, one of Spain’s foremost energy companies, who will lend considerable support and expertise to the tournament.

This will be our sixth visit to Pula Golf and it is interest-ing to note that three of the previous fi ve winners have all been Spanish. It is probably fair to say that Miguel An-gel Jiménez, Sergio Garcia and the man responsible for undertaking the course redesign in recent years, José Ma-ria Olazábal, have all felt relaxed in familiar surroundings and that was refl ected in their performances! José Maria’s new 17th hole – the fi nal part of the project - will be in play this week.

Our return to Pula Golf gives us the op-portunity to renew our valued partner-ships with Romeo Sala, President of Pula Golf; the Hotel Association of Cala Mil-lor and promoters Matchgolf, who have worked so hard to bring professional golf back to the island.

A special thanks, as always, goes to the hundreds of volunteers who will help ensure the smooth running of the event, while we express our gratitude to the Members and staff here at Pula Golf, the spectators and members of the Media. The tournament would not be possible without your support.

The European Tour

La ausencia, por lo que dice el refrán, hace que el corazón se encariñe mas, y esto es especialmente cierto para el Tour Europeo ya que volvemos al

excelente club de Pula Golf esta semana. La última que visitamos Pula Golf fue en 2007 y es un placer estar de vuelta en la hermosa isla de Mallorca para pasar tiempo con algunos viejos amigos y hacer amistad con algunos nuevos. En particular, damos la bienvenida a un nuevo patrocinador Iberdrola, una de las compañías de energía más importantes de España, que prestará un apoyo con-siderable y experiencia para el torneo. Esta será nuestra sexta visita a Pula Golf y es interesante no-tar que tres de los últimos cinco ganadores han sido todos españoles. Probablemente sea justo decir que Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Sergio García y el responsable de llevar a cabo el rediseño del curso en los últimos años, José María Olazábal, se han sentido todos muy relajados en un entorno famil-iar y que se refl ejó en sus actuaciones! El nuevo hoyo 17

de José María - la parte fi nal del proyecto - estarán en juego esta semana. Nuestro re-greso a Pula Golf nos da la oportunidad de renovar nuestras muy valoradas asociaciones con Romeo Sala, Presidente de Pula Golf, la Asociación Hotelera de Cala Millor y los promotores Matchgolf, que han trabajado arduamente para traer el golf profesional de regreso a la isla.

Un agradecimiento especial, como siempre, a los cientos de voluntarios que ayudarán a garantizar el buen funcionamiento del evento, mientras que expresamos nuestro agradecimiento a los socios y el personal de Pula Golf, los espectadores y los miem-bros de los medios de comunicación. Creo que fue Rockefeller el que dijo que si un día se arruinara, pediría un crédito de 100 millones de dólares: “Me gastaría 10 en un invento y el resto en

publicitarlo”.En nuestro caso el invento ya existía, era la maravillosa Bahía de Cala Millor, cuya asociación hotelera junto a los ayuntamientos de Son Servera y Sant Llorenç del Cardas-sar han impulsado de nuevo, cinco años después, la ce-lebración de un torneo del European Tour, por entender que el golf, que cada semana se proyecta en 214 millo-nes de hogares y a 642 millones de telespectadores, era el gran escaparate que quizás intuyó, pero no conquistó Rockefeller, un apasionado de este deporte, juego que practicó hasta entrados los 90 años.

Para terminar con el magnate, y como también pienso como él que una oportunidad es una obligación, hemos trabajado más duro que nunca para poder crear y cele-brar durante éste y los próximos tres años, al menos, el IBERDROLA Open Cala Millor Mallorca, torneo que permitirá satisfacer la demanda de quienes ya contem-plaron en el pasado lo provechoso que resulta para toda la comunidad y, en concreto, para este rincón privile-giado de Baleares, la celebración de un evento de esta universalidad.

Sin duda, sin nuestros socios, sin esos mecenas de la era moderna que son los patrocinadores jamás hubiéramos podido colmar nuestras expectativas, pero, una vez más, la bahía de Cala Millor volverá a disfrutar con la nobleza del golf europeo. Es un reto fabuloso por el que merece la pena repetir experiencia. El campo de golf de Pula, a pesar del duro invierno que hemos tenido, presentará su mejor condi-ción con la novedad de su última creatividad, el 17, que siempre estuvo en la cabeza de mi buen y querido amigo José María Olazábal. Ahora ya no está en su cerebro, es una maravillosa y desafi ante realidad.

I believe it was Rockefeller who said that if one day he found himself bankrupt, he would ask for a credit of $100 million. “ I would spend 10 on an invention

and the rest on advertising it.”

In our case the invention already existed, it was the mar-velous Bay of Cala Millor, whose hotel association along with the town halls of Son Servera and Sant Llorenç del Cardassar have once again impelled, after a fi ve year pause, the celebration of a European Tour. Golf, which is seen every week in 214 million homes and by 642 mil-lion spectators, was the great window that was sensed but not conquered by Rockefeller, an enthusiast of a sport which he practiced well into his 90’s.

I feel as he felt...that an opportunity is an obligation. We have worked harder than ever to create and celebrate this year and for at least the next three, the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca. It is a tournament that will satisfy the demand for all those who in the past recognized an opportunity for the enire community and especially for the Bay of Cala Millor which will return to enjoy the royalty of European golf.

It is a fabulous challenge and experience which deserves to be repeated. The golf couse of Pula, in spite of the the hard winter we have had, will be presented in the best conditions with the novelty of the latest creation, the 17th which was always in the head of my good and dear friend José María Olazábal. Now it is not is his head, but a marvellous and challenging reality.

El nuevo hoyo 17“Lo primero ha sido alejar la colocación de la bola en el primer golpe del fuera limites, por esto se ha hecho un tee nuevo mas hacia la izquierda. El objetivo, crear un tiro de mayor precisión colocando los bunkers en la caída del Drive para los pegadores. Tercero, alargar el hoyo en 47 m. buscando una mejor ubicación del green para tener una mejor visión de toda la zona de green. Es un par 4 con dogleg a la derecha y exige mayor precisión.El green es de tamaño medio, protegido por un bunker a la derecha y una zona de escape a la izquierda que te puede dejar un chip difi cultoso dependiendo de la colocación de la bandera.”

Aunque haya estado hooking, slicing o pegándole directo a la bola estos días, se volverá a enamorar de este loco juego viniendo a un sitio tan espléndido como éste. Solo tiene que preguntárselo a Gavin, mi amigo inglés que me acompañó

en mi última aventura golfística en Mallorca. También hay que hacer notar su drive off the tee en el par 4 del primer hoyo. La bola aterrizó en la frontal izquierda del green a 30 cm. del borde del bunker después de haber volado 300 metros... Podemos decir que aquella fue su hora de gloria.

Situado en las impresionantes colinas de la costa este mallorquina, Pula Golf es sin duda, una de las más hermosas y desafiantes experiencias de golf de la isla. Unas calles que parecen enrollarse, que suben y bajan y que a veces resultan muy angostas, hacen que estés totalmente dedicado al juego. El campo de Pula te pide un straight drive o mucha suerte buscando tu bola en la densa maleza o entre las cañas de bambú que rodean algunos greens. Las verdes calles se presentan amplias y bordeadas de pinos rechonchos con manchas de blanco y rosa de las flores de oleander. Y por supuesto con unos búnkers bien situados para ralentizar su llegada a la bandera. Rodando suavemente estos caminos le llevan a unos greens que sorprenden por lo difíciles que resultan, con suaves e in-visibles promontorios que dejan un putt increíblemente cerca, pero no dentro.Y hablo por experiencia.

Esta combinación verde de naturaleza domesticada en contraste con las suaves colinas de fondo y el azul del mar, hacen que Pula Golf sea una auténtica joya como campo de golf. Y hablando de agua, aparte de la del mar, hay mucha alrededor del campo. Cerca de 12 hoyos tienen agua para parar su juego. Algunos en forma de rápidas corrientes bordeando los charcos que parecen tener sed de bolas. ¡Hay que verlo!

Rediseñado en 2003 nada menos que por José María Olazábal, Pula Golf es uno de los más largos y populares campos de golf de Mallorca, tanto para los residentes como para los que vienen de fuera. No en vano ha sido sede de cinco torneos del Mallorca Classic PGA y ha sido elegido para el Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca 2010 que se celebra actualmente..

Cuidar y mantener en perfecto estado toda esta inmensa cantidad de césped es la re-sponsabilidad que tiene el greenskeeper americano Zach LaPorte. Un chico de Boston como yo que ha hecho de Mallorca su hogar durante los últimos siete años y donde parece que ha encontrado su pequeña porción del Paraíso.

“Ha sido un año excitante aquí en Pula. Como preparación a lo que será nuestro gran torneo de este año, hemos decidido plantar “de pared a pared” con césped Rye. Con la llegada de la primavera el césped se ha asentado y el resultado ha sido espectacular. También este año hemos rediseñado el hoyo 17 para hacerlo más difícil, especialmente para los de tiro largo. Con el green 30 metros más atrás y bunkers profundos prot-egiendo una estrecha franja de aterrizaje de la bola, creemos que el 17 será uno de los hoyos más difíciles del campo. La idea del Sr. Olazábal era crear un hoyo donde los golpeadores de largos tengan que pensárselo dos veces antes de darle a la bola. Estamos con mucha expectación ante este torneo y el comienzo de la nueva temporada.”

Así que ya lo sabe, si es usted residente o está visitando Mallorca, Pula Golf es uno de los 24 campos de la isla que debe destacar en su lista de “tengo que jugar en éste”.


Whether you’re hooking, slicing or hitting the ball straight these days, you’ll fall in love with this crazy game all over again for bringing you

to such a splendid place as this. Just ask Gavin, my Eng-lish friend who accompanied me on my latest Mallorcan golf adventure. You might also want to mention his drive off the tee on the par 4 first hole. Landing a foot shy of the sand bunker to the front left of the green it had travelled 300 meters and counting. Let’s just say that was his finest hour.

Tucked away in the scenic foothills on Mallorca’s east coast, Pula Golf is arguably one of the island’s most beau-tiful and challenging golf experiences. Winding, rolling and sometimes hazardously narrow fairways keep you focused, or else. Yes Pula often demands a straight drive or good luck finding your ball in the dense undergrowth or tightly knit stalks of bamboo that ring some greens. The lush green fairways come wide and welcoming or not, lined with stocky pines along with clutches of pink and white oleander. And oh yes, a good share of well-placed bunkers to slow your progress to the flag. Gently rolling every which way these pathways lead to often surprisingly tricky greens with hidden swells that leave many a putt incredibly close but sadly not in. Just ask me about that.

This green array of tamed and fittingly wild nature set against a backdrop of low- slung hills with blue sea be-yond combine to make Pula Golf a real gem of a course. And while on the subject of water, there’s plenty to go around. No less than 12 holes have water to contend with. Sometimes in the form of fast running streams skirting the rough or large swollen ponds with an un-

quenchable thirst for little white balls from on high. Been there done that.

Re-designed in 2003 by no less than José María Olazábal, Pula Golf is one of Mallorca’s longest and most popular courses for island residents and visitors alike. No wonder it’s been the venue for no less than five Mallorca Classic PGA tournaments and was chosen for the Open Cala Mil-lor Mallorca tournament in May 2010.

Keeping all this turf in shape is the primary responsibil-ity of American greenskeeper Zach LaPorte. A Boston boy like myself he has made Mallorca his home for the past seven years and seems to have found his little slice of paradise.

“It’s been a very exciting year here at Pula. In prepara-tion for this year’s big tournament a decision was made to over-seed wall to wall with Rye grass and the results have been fantastic. With spring finally here the grass is really taking hold. Also this year we re-designed hole 17 to make it more challenging, especially for long hitters. With the green 47 meters further back and deep bunkers protecting a narrow landing area I think that 17 will be easily the hardest hole out there. Mr. Olazábal’s idea was to create a hole that the long hitters would have to think twice about before pulling out the big dog. We are all looking forward to the tournament and the upcoming season.”

So if you are just visiting the island or residing here more permanently, Pula Golf is one of the island’s 24 courses to put high on your must play list.

“The first thing done was to move the ball placement of the first hit to the off limit zone. We made a new tee more toward the left. The goal is to create a more accurate shot by placing the bunkers in the fall of the Drive for the players. Thirdly, we’ve extended the hole by 47m looking for the best location of the green in order to have greater precision of the entire green area. It is a par 4 with a right dogleg and requires more precision. The medium sized green is protected by a bunker on the right and an escape zone on the left that can make for difficult chipping depending on the placement of the flag.”

Ob Sie dieser Tage hooken, slicen oder den Ball geradeaus schlagen, Sie werden sich erneut in dieses verrückte Spiel verlieben, wenn Sie an

solch einen grossartigen Ort kommen. Fragen Sie nur Gavin, meinen englischen Freund, der mich bei meinem letzten Golf Abenteuer auf Mallorca begleitete. Auch sollte man seinen Abschlag vom Tee am ersten Loch Par 4 erwähnen. Der Ball landete am linken Anfang des Grüns, 30 cm vom Rand des Bunkers, nachdem er 300 Meter gefl ogen war. Man könnte sagen, dies war die Stunde seines Ruhms.

An den eindrucksvollen Anhöhen der Ostküste Mallorcas gelegen ist Pula Golf zweifellos eine der schönsten und herausfordernsten Golf-Erfahrungen der Insel. Gewun-dene und sanft ansteigende und manchmal gewagt enge Fairways lassen Sie fokussiert auf das Spiel bleiben. Ja, Pula verlangt oft einen geraden Drive oder viel Glück beim Suchen des Balls im dichten Gestrüpp oder den fest zusammengewachsenen Bambus-Stäben die einige Grüns umringen. Die saftig grünen Fairways präsentie-ren sich weit und einladend, gesäumt von kräftigen Pin-ien mit Flecken von rosa und weissem Oleander. Und, oh ja, es gibt einen guten Anteil an gut plazierten Bunkern, die Ihre Annäherung an die Fahne verlangsamen. Diesen Wegen sanft folgend werden Sie zu Grüns geführt, deren Schwierigkeit oft überrascht, mit sanften und versteck-ten Erhebungen, die einen Putt unglaublich nah, aber traurigerweise nicht eingelocht sein lassen. Fragen Sie nur mich danach.

Diese grüne Anordnung an gezähmter und angemessen wilder Natur im Kontrast zu den sanften Hügeln im Hin-tergrund und dem blauen Meer führen dazu, dass Pula Golf ein wahres Schmuckstück an Golfplatz ist. Und wo wir von Wasser sprechen, rundherum gibt es einiges davon. An nicht weniger als 12 Löchern fi nden sich Was-serhindernisse. Manchmal in Form von schnell fl iessen-den Bächen, die am Rough entlangführen, oder grossen

angeschwollenen Teichen, die einen unlöschbaren Durst nach kleinen weissen Bällen zu haben scheinen. Habe ich schon gesehen!

Im Jahre 2003 von niemandem geringerem als José María Olazábal umgestaltet, ist Pula Golf einer der läng-sten und populärsten Plätze Mallorcas für Residenten der Insel sowie Besucher. Nicht ohne Grund war er Austra-gungsort für nicht weniger als fünf Mallorca Classic PGA Turniere und wurde für das Turnier Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca im Mai 2010 ausgewählt.

All diesen Rasen zu pfl egen und perfekt instand zu halten ist die Hauptverantwortung des amerikanischen Green-keepers Zach LaPorte. Ein Boston Junge wie ich selbst, der Mallorca zu seinem Zuhause für die vergangenen sieben Jahre gemacht hat und es scheint, dass er sein kleines Stück Paradies gefunden hat.

“Es war ein aufregendes Jahr hier in Pula. Als Vorbe-reitung für das grosse Turnier in diesem Jahr haben wir uns entschieden, von Mauer zu Mauer mit Rye Grass zu übersäen und die Ergebnisse sind fantastisch. Mit Ankunft des Frühlings hat sich der Rasen gesetzt. Ebenso haben wir in diesem Jahr das Loch 17 umgestaltet um es noch schwieriger zu machen, speziell für diejenigen mit weitem Schlag. Mit dem Grün 47 Meter nach hinten ver-setzt und tiefen Bunkern, die die schmale Landungszone schützen, denke ich, dass die 17 eines der schwierigsten Löcher des Platzes ist. Die Idee von Herrn Olazábal war, ein Loch zu kreieren, wo diejenigen die weit abschlagen es sich zweimal überlegen, bevor sie den „Big Dog“ he-rausholen. Wir freuen uns auf das Turnier und die kom-mende Saison.”

El Mallorca Classic tenía lugar en el campo de Pula Golfentre los años 2003 a 2007 y convertió a la isla Mallorca en el foco de atención del golf internacional de alta competición. La edición 2007 del torneo generó una co-bertura informativa en 50 cadenas de televisión de una veintena de países, lo que permitió llegar a más de 500

millones de hogares de los cinco continentes.

El montante de premios aumentó desde la primera edición en el año 2003 de 400.000 € a 2.000.000 € en la última edición del año 2007. Las primeras tres ediciones ganaron los españoles Miguel Ángel Jiménez en 2003, Sergio García en 2004 y José Maria Olazábal en 2005. En el año 2006 se llevó el triunfo el sueco Niclas Fasth y en el 2007 el jugador francés Gregory Bourdy. Contando para el Volvo Orden de Mérito y sumando puntos para la Ryder Cup el Mallorca Classic atrajo jugadores del mas alto nivel de toda Europa como Paul Lawrie, Robert Karlsson, Lee West-wood, Padraig Harrington, Thomas Björn, Paul McGinley, Sergio García, Miguel Angel Jimenez, José Mª Olazábal, Ian Woosnam, Jean Van de Velde, Niclas Fasth y muchos más.

The Mallorca Classic was held at Pula Golf Course for five consecutive years from 2003 to 2007 and made the island of Mallorca the focal point

of high-level international competitive golf. The 2007 tournament generated news coverage on fifty television channels from a score of countries, enabling it to reach more than 500 million homes all over the world.

The total prize money was increased from 400,000€ when the tournament was first held in 2003 to 2,000,000 € at the last tournament in 2007. Schedule de 2010, el campo, Pula Golf Club, es bastante conocido para muchos de los jugadores que van a par-ticipar. José María Olazábal es un viejo amigo de Pula. Rafael Cabrera Bello que creció al lado de un campo de golf en Canarias, hizo su primera aparición como vencedor en el European Tour el pasado verano de 2009 en el Austrian Golf Open, produciendo una de las grandes vueltas del año, un final del día 60, rompiendo todos los moldes. Fue en el año 2009 cuando Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, entró en la elite del grupo de los mejores 50, terminando el año en el puesto 17 de Europa. Dedicado a su propia Fundación, la Fundación Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, se dedica a ayudar a aquellos que más necesitan a través de actividades deportivas.

Italian Open el pasado fin de semana. Jugando desde los seis años de edad, terminó la temporada del 2009 en el puesto 79 de la Race to Dubai. Ganó la World Cup para Alemania en Barbados en 2006 cuando hacía equipo con Bernhard Langer.

El danés Thomas Björn ha sido miembro del equipo ga-nador de la European Ryder Cup en 1997 y 2002. El golfista profesional de más éxito en Dinamarca, Björn es un posible vice-capitán del Ryder Cup 2010 que se va a celebrar en Wales Celtic Manor.

Paul McGinley de Irlanda, ha demostrado una vez más su habilidad como jugador de equipo cuando lideró a Gran Bretaña e Irlanda a la victoria en el Vivendi Trophy el año pasado con Seve Ballesteros en su primera expe-riencia como capitán, donde recibió felicitaciones de to-dos los participantes. Paul siempre ha sido un apasionado del formato de equipo. Hasta 2006, ningún golfista eu-ropeo había saboreado lo que se siente al jugar y ganar tres Ryder Cup sucesivas.

Although the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca is one of five brand new tournaments to appear on the European Tour International Schedule in 2010, the

venue, Pula Golf Club, is a familiar sight to many players. José María Olazábal is an old friend of Pula. Being the designer of Pula Golf, Olazábal is most familiar with the course as well as with Mallorca. In 2009 he added another feather to his cap with his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame making him the second Spaniard, along with Seve Ballesteros, to receive such an honor. Having grown up next to a golf course on the Canary Islands, Rafael Cabrera Bello made his European Tour victory breakthrough in the late summer of 2009 at the Austrian Golf Open, producing one of the great rounds of the year, a final day 60, to storm through the field for victory. In 2009 Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, entered into the elite group of the 50 world’s best and ended the year 17th in Europe. Germany’s Marcel Siem is on Mallorca after having participated in the Andalucia Open in April and the BMW Italian Open last weekend. The Real Federación Española de Golf has bet on Madrid as the candidate to host the Ryder Cup 2018. A poll recently undertaken by the company

Redshift Research, British leader in market studies, po-sitioned the candidature of Madrid as a favorite among its competitors Portugal, Germany, Holland and France. Fifty-four percent of those questioned from the United Kingdom considered that Madrid is the best place for the celebration of a sporting event of this category.

The Spanish candidacy is unique in a region which brings with it: transportation at an international and na-tional level, access to thousands of hotels from economi-cal to luxurious, culture, excellent restaurants and a lot of life after golf. In numerous occasions Madrid has dem-onstrated it’s high organizing capacity of sporting events such as the Tennis Open, the European Nations Cup of Rugby or the Madrid Masters of Golf.If Madrid is chosen as the headquarters to host the Ry-der Cup 2018, the competition will be celebrated at the Finca Valdeloshielos of Tres Cantos, situated only 26 km from Madrid and perfectly communicated with the capi-tal. This will make it possible for all those attending the tournament to enjoy the best of golf by day and the best cultural, gastronomic and leisure offer by night in the Spanish capital.

While yet one year away from the confi rmation of the offi cial headquarters of the Ryder Cup 2018, the Com-munity of Madrid has been able to create expectation not only among the citizens of Madrid but among all Spaniards with such an important project. With the pres-ence of HH King Juan Carlos as President of Honor of the Committee for the Candidature of the Ryder Cup 2018, Madrid counts with another key player, Severiano Ballesteros, who has been chosen patron of the project. “To be part of this candidature is a great honor for me. During the 13th and 14th of May, one of the best amateur tournaments of the island will take place.

The Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca VIP where the invited VIPs of the tournament sponsors will play during two days on two of the best courses of Mallorca’s eastern coast: Capdepera Golf and Canyamel Golf.

Septiembre 2010Iberdrola J80 Cup

Este septiembre 2010 será recordado en Mallorca como el nacimiento de una nueva y gran regata, la agrupación hotelera de Cala Millor y su ayunta-

miento junto con el esfuerzo de Iberdrola. Organizarán en el Puerto de Cala Bona una regata para la clase J80, en dicha regata se espera la participación de regatistas de alto nivel de toda España así como la participación de la fl ota Balear.

El J80 es una embarcación tripulada por 4 regatista con 8 metros de eslora y con una superfi cie vélica agradecida sobre todo con vientos portantes lo que hace que sea un barco realmente de navegación espectacular, además se trata de un monotipo, es decir que todos los barcos son iguales con lo cual las regatas se corren en tiempo real. Al no haber diferencia en el diseño y en las velas las regatas de este tipo de barco se deciden por muy pequeñas dife-rencias y hacen de este tipo de competiciones una delicia visual para el que la contempla y de una intensidad muy elevada.

Cala Bona y su pequeño puerto acogerán esta com-petición llenando de color y espectáculo esta bahía privi-legiada por sus condiciones meteorológicas y por su belleza natural. Se espera la participación de los regatistas más destacados a nivel Mundial, un ranking dominado por las tripulaciones españolas que consiguieron en el pasado 2009 situar a 8 tripulaciones a la cabeza del Mundial absoluto de la clase. Así mismo esta asegurada también la participación Balear que ha demostrado un muy buen nivel en los últimos campeonatos nacionales, se trata de una clase muy activa y que cuenta en Mallorca con una fl ota de alrededor de 20 embarcaciones.

La organización técnica correrá a cargo de la Federación Balear de Vela lo que asegura una alta calidad en la orga-nización del evento. Se organizarán 4 días de competición reservando unos días previos para el entrenamiento. Los recorridos serán tipo Barlovento-Sotavento de una dura-ción aproximada de unos 50 minutos, lo cual obligará a lucirse a las distintas tripulaciones participantes y supon-drá una exigencia técnica importante para los distintos barcos que deberán disputarse de manera muy justa el privilegio de ser los primeros vencedores de esta regata.

La apuesta de Cala Millor con la vela es una apuesta se-gura de espectáculo, competición y deportividad que llenará las aguas de Cala Millor de velas blancas al viento símbolo de limpieza en el juego y de alta competición, las imágenes que dejara esta regata serán realmente espe-ctaculares y pretenden perdurar con el tiempo y seguir organizando esta competición en los años venideros. La vela es un deporte noble que trasmite todos los buenos propósitos del deporte y lanzará a esta zona del levante mallorquín como un icono en la organización de eventos de alto nivel igual como ya ocurre en otras competicio-nes como el golf.


September 2010Iberdrola J80 Cup

This September 2010 will be remembered in Mal-lorca as the birth of a new and grand regatta. The Hotel Association of Cala Millor along with the

Town Hall will join forces with Iberdrola to organize a regatta for the J80 Class in the Port of Cala Bona. The regatta encourages the participation of high level sailors from all over Spain as well as the participation of the Balearic fl eet.

The J80 is an 8m long vessel handled by 4 sailors which has a surface area with special advantages downwind making it a really spectacular boat to navigate. As a monotype, all the boats are equal and the regattas run in real time. Since there are no differences in the design nor in the sails, regattas with this type of boat are de-cided by very small differences which make this kind of competition a visual delight to contemplate and of great intensity.

The small port of Cala Bona, privileged for its meterologic conditions and natural beauty, will host the competition fi lling the bay with color and spectacle. The most out-standing sailors of worldwide ranking will participate, a ranking dominated by the Spanish crews whom in 2009 situated eight crews of the class at the top of the World Absolute. The Balearic crew, a very active class which in Mallorca has a fl eet of approximately 20 boats, has dem-onstrated a good level in the latest national champion-ships and their participation is assured.

The Federación Balear de Vela will be in charge of the technical organization of the event. Four days of compe-tition will be organized as well as a few days of pre-event training. The routes will be windward-leeward and will last approximately 50 minutes which will allow the vari-ous participants to display their abilities which will de-mand important technical expertise. The different boats will fairly dispute the privilege to be the fi rst winners of this regatta.

Cala Millor is betting on a great competitive sailing event which will fi ll it’s waters with white sails to the wind, the symbol of sportsmanship, fair play and high compe-tition. The regatta will create spectacular images not soon to be forgotten. Sailing, a noble sport which transmits the best propositions, will launch this zone of the eastern coast of Mallorca as an organizer of competitive events such as already occurs with golf.

Faced with one of Juan Waelder’s sculptures, one feels transported to one of those invisible cities that Italo Calvino used to write about, such as, Zobeida, “white city, well exposed to the moon”, which according to the brillant writer was founded

by a group of men who dreamed that they were pursuing a naked woman through an unknown city, whom everyone lost. They never found the woman but they did find themselves and decided to build the city which they had dreamed about. From this relationship between the dreamed and the desired, Juan Waelder’s sculptures get their nutrients. A multifaceted artist who knows how to combine with skill, the mastery of form and the richness of an overflowing imagination.

The female body is the focus of his work: the woman, eternal allegory of beauty, is represented by Waelder not as an idealized figure but as a body, real and metaphorical, evoking creation and desire, the real and dreamed. As in Calvino’s story, we can imagine the artist dreaming the forms with such precision and knowing how to accurately ma-terialize them in clay, wood and finally in bronze. Bronze makes of his creations, eternal pieces of art, which speak back to us over and over about the human condition, trapped between the physical reality of the body and the unlimited potential of thought. In the artist’s sculptures we delight in his ability to shape the female body with elegance, sometimes finding subtle defects in a real figure that give his work a more human quality. At the same time, he incorporates unusual elements, at times anatomical and others architectural, opening a known form to countless interpretations, while discov-ering thousands of details which he applies with the precision of a master goldsmith. In recent years Mallorca has become one of the best new golf hot-spots in Europe. Recommendations from golfers and golf tour opera-tors are certainly two ways to attract golf tourism and the tourism department of the Balearic government (IBATUR) considers a priority the promotion of golf in the Balearics with a special emphasis on Mallorca, the Golf Island.

In last November’s IGTM conference in Málaga aimed specifi cally at golf tour operators, the Balearic Islands attended along with twenty companies representing hotels, golf courses, golf tour representatives and the Balearic Golf Course Association (ACGB). IGTM is the most important event for the golf travel industry. 600 golf tourism suppliers join 350 pre-qualifi ed buyers and 140 international press for four days of pre-scheduled appointments, networking opportunities and industry updates. Due to it’s location in Europe, good airline connections and weather conditions, Spain is often selected to host the event. This year IGTM will take place in Valencia from November 15-18.

From Paris to RheingolfThe Salon du Golf de Paris celebrated last March 20-22 at the Porte de Versailles, was visited by more than 34.000 visitors. With more than 325,000 golfers and almost 300 courses, French golfers are an enormous source of potential tourism. To many French golfers, Mal-lorca is a new golf destination, close to home and with an outstand-ing gastronomic, cultural, shopping, spa and wine offer.

Rheingolf, held last March 26-28 in Cologne, Germany is one of the most well-known golf events in Europe and very important for Mal-lorcan golf courses and hotels. It is an event that is well attended by Mallorcan businesses and golf professionals year after year. Mal-lorca attended as offi cial partner where IBATUR presented the “Chip for Mallorca”, a green in the shape of the island where visitors could try their putting and maybe win a trip to Mallorca. Mallorca receives 100,000 German golfers each year. A visitor can fl y from Cologne or Düsseldorf and in less than 4 hours be ready to tee off on a beautiful course with sea views.

Gemma Mengual has been and is a pioneer in a sport in which Spain is already a worldwide power. In an interview conceeded to the Spanish national daily, El País, by her trainer Ana Tarrés, she says “ Gemma is the Messi of synchronized

swimming”. Gemma is and always will be the swimmer in the world of synchronized swimming and not only for her technical quality and artistry but because she is the only one who has survived 20 years in top level competition. She will never be replaced.

Betty Gold: Cuando el Arte se convierte en toda una vida.

Bueino? pregunta Betty Gold en el teléfono con su inconfundible acento tejano con una pizca de mex-icano. Años cincuenta, Estados Unidos: Betty tiene

una hija y una vida acomodada en Dallas, Texas. Ex mod-elo de moda y Miss Texas 1954, esta atractiva y alta mujer se casa con un fabricante de ropa de mucho éxito que no estaba de acuerdo en absoluto con los planes artísticos de su esposa. “ ¡Él quería una ama de casa! Y yo no quería estar siempre preguntándole si podía ir aquí o allí... Yo quería ser una artista!

Cambió el golf por el acero.

Con tiempo de sobra para estudiar historia del arte, pin-tura y escultura, Betty también disfrutó del golf cuando este deporte era realmente elitista. Después de divorciar-se, Betty dejó los palos y cambió completamente su vida. Pero, ¿Podemos imaginarnos a una ex reina de belleza soldando frías piezas de acero? En un artículo que ella escribió “Mujeres en la soldadura” dice: “Nunca olvi-daré la expresión de los rostros de mis compañeros, to-dos hombres, cuando ingresé en la Texas Trade Welding School. No me dejaban que levantara ninguna pieza que pesara más de dos kilos. Lo gracioso eran sus caras cu-ando veían que mis soldaduras eran mejor que las suyas. Nunca forcé al acero para que se uniera, tuve la paciencia para que el metal siguiera su propio curso. Después de esto, nadie me ayudó a levantar nada”

Transiciones

Betty se mudó de Texas a Aspen, Colorado, con su hija pequeña, donde continuó su proceso creativo. El acero se convirtió en su material y la geometría en su inspiración. Su primera exposición la realizó cuando tenía 35 años y se componía de piezas pequeñas. “Piezas de metal de 15 a 30cm. de alto. Lo que yo podía cortar sin tener un láser”.Su trabajo llamó la atención del coleccionista de arte Sidney Feldman, y fue él quien insistió en que Betty se trasladara a California, para estar cerca de una acería. “Solo tienes que hacer algo hermoso.” le dijo Feldman, “Que tenga unos cuatro metros de alto. ”

Embajadora de Mallorca

Desde entonces su vida ha sido una aventura constante con más de 100 obras monumentales en colecciones privadas y públicas desde Corea a España y de Australia a Eslovaquia. Fue a Mallorca donde vino por primera vez a España en 1999 para participar en la exposición “Es-culturas Públicas” durante la “Universiada”. Fue Soller la inspiración para crear las esculturas monolíticas que llevaron el nombre de este hermoso puerto mallorquín hasta Palos Verde or Malibu, en California. En Palma Betty compró lo que fuera una antigua herrería al costado de la calle Olmos y la convirtió en su segundo hogar y estudio.Pere Serra, conocido editor balear y entusiasta de la obra de Betty, la eligió para que creara las piezas que adornan

la entrada de Es Baluard, Museu d’Art Modern i Con-temporani de Palma. Las geométricas esculturas Fray Junipero Serra y la pintada en amarillo Para Ti le da la bienvenida al visitante mientras Tirón I está situada en la explanada a los pies de las murallas medievales. Quienes viajan por la autopista de Palma a Alcudia verán una gran escultura en blanco: Veles II.

Buay-no? asks Betty Gold into the receiver with her unmistakeable Texan with a hint of Mexican accent. Circa 1950 ’s America: Betty has one daughter and

a comfortable life in Dallas, Texas. A former fashion mod-el and Miss Texas 1954, this tall and attractive woman married a successful clothing manufacturer who didn’t agree with his wife’s artistic pursuits. “ He wanted a wife! I didn’t want to ask him if I could go here or go there..... I wanted to be an artist!”

Traded golf for steelWith time to study art history, painting and sculpture Betty also enjoyed golfing when golf really WAS an elit-ist sport. After her divorce Betty gave away her clubs and changed her life. But does one imagine a former beauty queen welding cold rolled steel? In her own ar-

ticle “Women in the Weld” she wrote: “I’ll never forget the look on the face of my (all male) class when I entered Texas Trade Welding School. They abso-lutely wouldn’t let me pick up steel weighing over 5 pounds but had a funnier look when my welds were so much better

than theirs. I never forced the steel to marry, I just had the patience to let the bead take its own course. After that not one guy would help me pick up anything.”

TransitionsShe moved from Texas to Aspen, Colorado with her young daughter where she continued with the creative process. Steel became her medium and geometry her in-spiration. Her first show was at the age of 35 with a few small sculptures. “ Metal pieces about one to three feet tall were as big as I could afford to cut without a laser. ” When her work attracted the attention of the art collec-tor Sidney Feldman, he insisted she move to California to be near the steel factory. “Just make something beauti-ful,” he said. “About 12 feet tall.”

Ambassador of MallorcaSince then her life has been a continuous adventure with more than 100 monumental works in public and pri-vate collections from Korea to Spain and from Australia to Slovakia. It is to Mallorca where she first came in 1999 to participate in the exhibition “Public Sculptures” dur-ing the University Games. It is Soller that inspired her to create monolithic sculptures that carry the name of this beautiful Mallorcan town to such places as Palos Verde or Malibu, California. It is in Palma where she bought what had been an old blacksmith’s shop and kitchen chair fac-tory off Calle Olmos to transform into her second home and studio.

Pere Serra, afamed Balearic publisher and enthusiasticsup-porter of Betty’s work, chose her to create the pieces that grace the entrance to the Es Baluard Museum of Modern

and Contemporay Art of Palma. The geometric sculptures “Fray Junipero Serra” and the bright yellow “Para Ti” wel-come the visitor while “Tirón I” rests on the esplanade below Palma’s medieval walls. Travelers on the highway to Alcúdia marvel at her white sculpture “Veles II”.

Based in Venice, California, at 75 years old, Betty is un-stoppable. Positive, enthusiastic, independent, charis-matic and outspoken she continues to be an inspiration to all who meet her. For our sake, we hope her love affair with Mallorca will continue for many years to come.

in den 1950er Jahren: Betty hat eine Tochter und führt ein komfortables Leben in Dallas, Texas. Die schlanke und attraktive Frau, ehemals Model und Miss Texas 1954, heiratete damals einen er-folgreichen Modehersteller, der jedoch mit den kün-stlerischen Ambitionen seiner Frau ganz und gar nicht zu Recht kam. „Er wollte einfach nur eine Ehefrau! Und ich wollte ihn nicht stän-dig um Erlaubnis bitten, dies und das zu tun... Ich wollte Künstler werden!“

Golfschläger gegen Stahl getauschtWährend Betty Kunstgeschichte, Malerei und Skulptur studierte, spielte sie in ihrer Freizeit auch Golf. Zu einer Zeit, als Golf noch ein echter Elitesport war. Nach ihrer Scheidung verabschiedete sie jedoch von den Schlägern und begann, ein neues Leben zu führen. Doch dass die ehemalige Schönheitskönigin eines Tages gehärteten Bandstahl schweißen würde, das hätte sich wohl nie-mand vorstellen können. In ihrem Artikel „Frauen beim Schweißen“ schreibt sie: „Ich werde niemals den Gesich-tsausdruck meiner männlichen Klassenkollegen verges-sen, als ich meine Ausbildung zum Berufsschweißer auf der Schule in Texas begann. Die ließen mich anfangs kein Stück Stahl in die Hand nehmen, das schwerer als fünf Pfund wog. Doch als sie irgendwann sahen, dass meine Schweißnähte besser hielten als ihre, waren sie einfach nur baff. Ich habe den Stahl allerdings auch niemals mit Gewalt zusammengefügt, sondern besaß stets die Geduld, der Schweißnaht ihren Lauf zu lassen. Zum Schluss hat mir kein Kerl auch nur irgendetwas abgenommen.”

OrtswechselIrgendwann zog sie mit ihrer kleinen Tochter von Texas nach Aspen im US-Bundesstaat Colorado, wo sie ihre kreative Entwicklung fortsetzte. Der Stahl wurde zu ihrem Medium und die Geometrie zu ihrer Inspiration. Mit 35 Jahren feierte sie er erste Ausstellung mit ein paar kleineren Skulpturen. „Ein bis drei Fuß große Metall-stücke konnte ich damals noch ohne Laser schneiden.” Als der Kunstsammler Sidney Feldman auf ihre Arbeiten aufmerksam wurde, bestand er darauf, dass sie nach Kalifornien in die Nähe einer Stahlfabrik ziehen sollte.

Botschafter von MallorcaSeitdem gleicht ihr Leben einem nicht enden wollenden Abenteuer. Mehr als 100 ihrer Monumentalarbeiten sind in öffentlichen und privaten Kunstsammlungen rund um den Globus ausgestellt, von Korea bis Spanien, von Aus-tralien bis zu Slowakei. Nach Mallorca kam Betty 1999, als sie an der Ausstellung „Öffentliche Skulpturen“ im Rahmen der Universitätsolympiade teilnahm. Sóller in-spirierte sie zur Schaffung einer gleichnamigen riesi-gen Skulptur, die später ihren Weg nach Palos Verde und Malibu (Kalifornien) fand. In Palmas Calle Olmos kaufte sie eine alte Schmiede und eine Fabrik, die sie in einen Zweitwohnsitz und in ein Studio verwandelte.

Pere Serra, einer der berühmtesten Verleger und Kunst-mäzen der Balearen, beauftragte sie zur Schaffung der beiden großen Figuren am Eingang von Palmas zeit-genössischem Museum Es Baluard. Die geometrischen Skulpturen „Fray Junipero Serra“ und “Para Ti” heißen seitdem die Museumsbesucher willkommen, während das Kunstwerk “Tirón I” auf der großen Fläche unterhalb von Palmas mittelalterlicher Stadtmauer thront. Und auf dem Weg nach Alcúdia kommen Autobahnfahrer an Bet-tys Skulptur “Vele II” vorbei.

Die 75-jährige Betty Gold lebt in Venice, Kalifornien. Positiv denkend, leidenschaftlich, unabhängig, charis-matisch und unverblümt ist sie stets eine Inspiration für alle, die sie kennen lernen. Wir hoffen daher, dass ihre Liebesbeziehung mit Mallorca noch viele Jahre anhält.

Cuando Koldo Royo escribió “Tapas”, un libro de recetas que es un homenaje a sus padres, que las ofrecían en la barra del bar Antonio que regenta-

ban en en la calle Bergara de San Sebastián, seguramente no había pensado que un día daría el giro a su afamado restaurante y que se pasaría por completo al mundo de las tapas.

Aquiara es el nuevo restaurante que tras un año de cierre del antiguo Koldo Royo ha abierto al público con un concepto totalmente nuevo: “las tapas siempre han sido una cocina de subsistencia, y más en tiempos de crisis”.En una entrevista con EFE, Royo ha comentado que “en época de crisis, muchos restaurantes se han visto obliga-dos a cambiar y entonces, o se ha hecho más pequeño el local, o bien ofrecen unos platos más pequeños, que son más económicos también para el cliente, y es ahí donde la cultura de la tapa se ha abierto camino”.

Koldo vuelve de alguna manera a los orígenes, al bar de su padre donde el cocinero ofrecía las tapas y pinchos que él mismo preparaba. Pero también tendrá un espacio en la parte superior, para banquetes y comidas de grupo,

eso sí, haciendo la reserva y la elección del menú con antelación. Durante el año de cierre Koldo Royo estuvo muy activo, así nos sorperendió con la publicación de su nuevo libro: “Tapas y pintxos de Barcelona” una guía de “150 bares y tabernas de tapas imprescindibles en la ciudad” y nos ha mantenido al día en lo culinario en su programa: Cocina vasca con Koldo Royo en el canal de Cocina.

Persona cercana y afable, se entusiasma cuando habla y no para. Lo comenta todo y se preocupa del más mínimo detalle: “Para hacer una tapa le dedico todo el tiempo que necesita, no por ser más pequeño deja de ser un plato que hay que preparar, cocinar y servir”

When Koldo Royo wrote the recipe book “Tapas” in homage to his parents, owners of the Bar Antonio on Bergara Street in San Sebastian,

he surely had not thought that one day he would turn his famed restaurant around and pass completely to the world of tapas.

After closing the old Koldo Royo for one year, he opened Aquiara to the public, a new restaurant with a completely new concept: “Tapas have always been a food of subsis-tence and much more in times of crisis. Many restaurants have been obliged to change, maybe they have made the place smaller or they offer smaller dishes which are also more economical for the client. And this is where the culture of the tapa has opened the door.”

In some way, Koldo has returned to his origins. To the bar of his father where the cook offered tapas and pin-chos that he himself prepared. But at Aquiara there is also space upstairs for banquets and group dining, but fi rst, of course, make a reservation and choose the menu ahead of time. During the hiatus of one year, Koldo Royo was very active. He has surprised us with the publica-tion of his new book: “Tapas y pintxos de Barcelona”, A guide to 150 not to be missed city bars and taverns”. And he has kept us up-to-date on all things culinary on his program “Basque cooking with Koldo Royo” on the Cooking channel.

Warm and friendly, Koldo emits enthusiasm when he speaks and never stops. He has a comment about every-thing and he worries about the most minimum detail: “In order to make a tapa, I dedicate all the necessary time. Just because it is small doesn’t mean that it doesn’t take time to prepare, to cook and to serve.”

„Aquiara“ heißt das neue Restaurant, das Koldo Royo, knapp ein Jahr nach Schließung des alten Lokals, jetzt mit einem völlig neuen Konzept eröffnet hat: “Tapas dienten von jeher als Alternative zur konventionellen Küche, insbesondere in schlechten Zeiten”.In einem Interview mit der Nachrichtenagentur EFE er-klärt Royo, dass “viele Restaurants in Krisenzeiten kürzer treten mussten, ihre Lokale verkleinerten, die Gerichte reduzierten und sie zu günstigeren Preisen anboten. Diese Zeiten waren die Wegbe-reiter für die Tapas-Kultur”.Koldo kehrt gewissermaßen zu seinen eigenen Wurzeln zurück. Schon in der Bar seines Vaters wur-den Tapas und Spießchen angeboten, die er damals selbst zubereitete. Sein neues Lokal verfügt in der oberen Etage über einen großen Speisesaal für Bankette, Familien- oder Geschäftsessen. Bedin-gung ist allerdings eine vorige Reservierung und Auswahl des gewünschten Menüs. In den vergangenen zwölf Monaten war Koldo Royo sehr aktiv. So überrascht er uns unter anderem mit einem neuen Buch: “Tapas und Spieß-chen aus Barcelona” ist ein Gastroführer über die 150 wichtigsten Bars und Tapas-Lokale der Mittelmeer-Metropole. Seiner Heimat ist er trotz des Abstechers nach Katalonien treu geblieben: So kocht er weiterhin im eigenen TV-Programm die besten baskischen Rezepte nach.

Koldo Royo: „Bei der Zubereitung einer Tapa nehme ich mir so viel Zeit wie eben dafür nötig ist. Nur weil es sich augenscheinlich um eine kleine Portion handelt, heißt das noch lange nicht, dass sie nicht sorgfältig vorbereitet, gekocht und serviert werden muss.”

De esta manera, no sólo se conocen los paisajes y la gastro-nomía sino que también se pueden hacer unos cuantos hoyos en plena naturaleza.La cultura del vino se está desarrollando cada vez más a pe-sar de los tiempos que corren y en España donde tenemos 63 regiones vitivinícolas y más de 290 campos de golf, de los que aquí en Mallorca tenemos 25, hay muchas oportu-nidaes de hacer un “coupage” de vino y golf.

Le pedí a Juanjo Gomariz, propietario de Lo Di Vino, que me ayudara a seleccionar unos vinos que pudieran tener un paralelo con el golf. Juanjo juega desde hace muchos años y lo hace sistemáticamente casi cada día, su cercanía al Golf de Puntiró se lo permite: “Soy el socio número 11, uno de los primeros de este campo.”Cambió el estrés de su negocio de informática (se lo ad-virtió un médico) por el del vino “al que era aficionado desde siempre, casi tanto como al golf. Tenía una bode-ga particular con más de mil botellas, que me sirvieron para empezar Lo Di Vino. Este local donde estamos fue el primero que vi y me gustó. Así que con un amigo car-pintero lo adecuamos y el 13 de Enero de 2001 lo abrí al publico. Estaba solo y al principio lo abría de día hasta que me di cuenta que lo suyo era abrir de noche.”

Aunque le han tocado malos, recuerda que su mejor fly fue con su amigo Ramón Cachafeiro: “Estábamos muy compenetrados, si yo fallaba, él acertaba y viceversa” Se-gún Vicky Pertierra los torneos se ganan en el putt, ¿Tú qué opinas? Es cierto. Es muy importante tener un buen putt. Es lo que le da harmonía al juego y te puede salvar de un mal recorrido. Por cierto, a Vicky le vendí su pri-mer ordenador. Con su filosofía de tomarse las cosas con calma, Juanjo observa la vida desde su Di Vino mientras planea un concierto-cena de Jazz, su otra pasión.

Lately, wine and golf make a special combination. There are wine zones of the Spanish province of La Rioja that, apart from their wines and their excellent

food, offer a complete package to play on the region’s golf courses. This way, not only does one get to know the landscapes and gastronomy but can also play a few holes in a completely natural environment. The culture of wine is developing, in spite of these difficult times, and in Spain where we have 63 wine regions and more than 290 golf courses, of which 25 are located in Mal-lorca, there are many opportunities to enjoy a “coupage” of wine and golf!

I asked Juanjo Gomariz, owner of Lo Di Vino, for some help in selecting some wines that could have a parallel with golf. Juanjo has been playing golf for many years. Systematically almost every morning he plays at the near-by Golf Park Puntiró: “I’m club member number 11, one of the first at this course.”He changed the stress of his computer business (upon the advice of his doctor) for wine “...always a wine en-thusiast, almost as much as golf. I had my own bodega with more than a thousand bottles which served to begin Di Vino. This local was one of the first ones that I saw and I liked it. With a carpenter friend we reformed it and on January 13, 2001, I opened it to the public. I was on my own and at the beginning I opened during the day until I realized that it would be best to open only at night.”

Der Wein und das Golfspiel sind schon ein ganz be-sonderes Paar. So gibt es Weinanbaugebiete wie La Rioja, die ihren Besuchern neben ausgezeichneten

Tropfen und hervorragender Küche auch gleich mehrere schöne Golfplätze bietet. Auf diese Weise lernt man nicht nur die Schönheit des Landes, seine Gastronomie kennen, sondern kann auch noch ein paar Löcher in dieser wunder-schönen Region spielen. Die Liebe zum Wein wächst trotz der schwierigen Zeiten. Mit über 63 Weinanbaugebieten und mehr als 290 Golfplätzen gibt es in Spanien zahlreiche Möglichkeiten, Wein und Golf miteinander zu verbinden.

Ich habe Juanjo Gomariz, Besitzer von Lo Di Vino gebe-ten, mir dabei zu helfen, Weine auszusuchen, die mit dem Golfspiel vergleichbar sind. Juanjo spielt bereits seit vielen Jahren Golf, und er tut dies, dank der großen Nähe zum Golfclub Puntiró, systematisch Tag für Tag: “Ich habe die Mitgliedsnummer 11, war also einer der ersten Mitglieder auf diesem Platz.“

Irgendwann tauschte er (auf Anraten seines Arztes) den Stress eines Informatikunternehmens mit dem Weinhandel, denn “ich hatte immer schon eine Vorliebe für gute Tropfen, ähn-lich wie ich sie auch für das Golfspiel habe. Ich besaß früher eine eigene Bodega mit mehr als eintausend Flaschen. Sie war der Grundstein, um Di Vino zu gründen. Das heutige Geschäftslokal war das erste, das ich mir damals ansah, und es gefiel mir auf Anhieb. Zusammen mit einem befreundeten Tischler richtete ich es ein und eröffnete das Geschäft am 13. Januar 2001. Anfangs war ich alleine und arbeitete nur tags-über, bis ich irgendwann begriff, dass es doch das Beste sei, das Lokal am Abend zu öffnen.”

Auch wenn er in seinem Leben schon Unzählige gespielt hat, so erinnert er sich doch an einen Flight ganz besonders ger-ne zurück: den mit seinem Freund Ramón Cachafeiro zusam-men: “Wir bildeten auf der Runde wirklich ein perfektes Team. Wenn ich fehlte, dann gelang ihm ein Schlag und viceversa.“ Vicky Pertierra behauptet, dass Turniere beim Putten gewon-nen werden. Was denkst du? “Das stimmt. Es ist sehr wichtig, gut zu putten. Erst der Putt gibt dem Spiel seine Harmonie. Au-ßerdem kann er die beim Annähern begangenen Fehler wieder wettmachen. Apropos Vicky: Der habe ich ihren ersten Com-puter verkauft.”

Mit seiner Einstellung, die Dinge stets mit Ruhe zu nehmen, beobachtet Juanjo das Leben von Di Vino aus, während er ge-rade einen Konzertabend mit Jazz, seiner anderen großen Lei-denschaft, plant.

Lo último como experiencia de golf Por Mark Goldsmith

La impresionante vista desde la soleada terraza de Son Muntaner, ubicada entre las suaves colinas desde donde se puede ver Palma, es sufi ciente argumento

para que aquel que todavía no se haya convertido en un adicto del golf, termine haciéndolo. Arabella Golf Son Muntaner, uno de los tres campos de 18 hoyos de nivel profesional operados por Arabella Golf and Spa Resort es sin lugar a dudas una joya de la corona.

El juego del golf, descrito en una ocasión por el escri-tor y humorista norteamericano Mark Twain como, “una buena caminata echada a perder”, puede llegar a su máxima expresión en cualquiera de estos extremada-mente bien cuidados campos. Casi como tratados por un peluquero, los fairways de Son Muntaner se combinan perfectamente con los difíciles greens que parecen haber pasado por la manicura. José Maria Olazábal, ganador del reciente torneo skins y todos los que participaron en este campo, hablaron maravillas de él.

Antigua herencia

Este desafi ante campo tiene una rica variedad de terreno y sus calles comparten a derecha y izquierda hoyos dog legs que hacen que siempre estés adivinando desde el tee. Además del paisaje ondulado y campestre que ro-dea el campo, Son Muntaner tiene el orgullo de poseer uno de los olivos más antiguos de todo Mallorca: “Na Capitana.”Muy cerca se encuentra Son Quint, el más nuevo del trío de campos. Con un diseño más abierto, estilo parque, está igualmente muy bien mantenido. Los diseñadores de Son Quint, Ramón Espinosa y Kurt Rossknecht han combinado un interesante diseño del campo con unos apetitosos par cuatro cortos y algunos par tres largos con varios hoyos con unos bunkers casi invisibles que se tra-garán su bola si no llega el green con el fl y.

El primero de todos

El campo más antiguo de los 24 que ofrece la isla de Ma-llorca es el Arabella Son Vida, un campo relativamente cor-to lo que no signifi ca que sea menos difícil. Se desarrolla a través de un paisaje forestal salpicado de grandes man-siones que obligan a unas calles muy angostas que castiga todo excepto los tiros más rectos. Son Vida transmite el encanto y ambiente de un club de campo clásico.

The game of golf, once described by American author and humorist Mark Twain as, “a good walk spoiled” is in capable hands at any of these extremely well run courses. The closely clipped, tidy fairways of Son Muntaner com-bined with its manicured and challenging greens put even the best players to the test. At a recent skins match here won by Spain’s José Maria Olazábal, he and his fel-low competitors had nothing but praise.

Ancient legacyThe challenging course has a rich variety of terrain and its fair share of right and left dogleg holes to keep you guessing off the tees. Apart from the scenic undulating countryside ringing the course, Son Muntaner also boasts one of Mallorca’s oldest olive trees which is something to behold: “Na Capitana.”Nearby Son Quint, the newest of the trio of courses features

a more open, park-like layout and is equally well maintained. Son Quint designers Ramon Espinosa and Kurt Rossknecht have concocted a rich course layout with some tantalizing short par fours and some longer par threes along with sev-eral holes with well hidden bunkers that swallow your ball if you don’t hit the green on the fly.

First of them allMallorca’s oldest course out of the 23 the island offers is Arabella’s Son Vida, a relatively short course but no less challenging. It winds through a forested landscape laced with grand houses and offers up some pretty narrow fairways that punish all but the straightest drives. Son Vida exudes the charm and ambience of a classic country club.

All three courses are popular golf venues for guests of the 5 star Arabella Golf & Spa Resort that offers luxury accom-modation packages with unlimited play. And many of the islands year-round residents are either members here or opt for pay and play. Die Greens werden durch gut versteckte Bunker verteidigt, die jeden Ball schlucken, der ihnen in die Quere kommt.

Der erste von allenVon den 23 Insel-Plätzen ist Arabellas Son Vida Mallor-cas älteste Golfanlage. Sie ist verhältnismäßig kurz, aber gleichfalls herausfordernd angelegt. Die Bahnen winden sich durch ein stark bewaldetes Terrain. Die Fairways wer-den manchmal sehr eng, wer hier nicht gerade schlägt, wird unweigerlich bestraft. Son Vida versprüht generell den Charme eines klassischen Country Clubs.

Diagnóstico, EXPLICACIÓN Y CORRECCIÓN”

Previo a la clase, pase por el campo de prácti-cas, haga su calentamiento y lance algunas bo-las: esté preparado para cuando se encuentre con su profesor. La clase sirve para aprender y corregir, no para practicar.

Al presentarnos por primera vez ante nuestro profesor, comentaremos cuánto tiempo lleva-mos practicando o jugando; si tenemos handi-cap; si tenemos alguna limitación física, dolor, operación, etc., cuáles son nuestros objetivos en referencia a la práctica del golf (si es por jugar con la familia, por relaciones laborales, para llegar a participar en torneos, etc.).

Fijaremos con el profesor un objetivo a corto plazo –o sea, para la clase del momento- y un objeti-vo a largo plazo –para el total de la temporada o el conjunto de clases previstas. También plan-tearemos un objetivo que dependa directamente

de nosotros, algo sencillo, controlable y a nuestro nivel, desafi ante pero plausible para nuestras posibilidades, con buena motivación, controlable y dependiente única y exclusivamente de nosotros: por ejemplo, “antes de dar un golpe, calcularé la distancia hasta la ban-dera”, o “antes de dar un golpe, comprobaré la dirección y la fuerza del viento”.

Piense y entienda lo que deba o quiera corregir. Medite sus du-das y recuerde sus errores; acostúmbrese a llevar una libreta de notas al uso y anote cualquier idea o concepto que surja. Sugiera a su profesor trabajarlos en la clase.

Comente sus dudas con claridad y confi anza a su profesor; cada enseñanza de su profesor deberá ser también clara y compren-sible. Si la duda persiste, pregunte de nuevo. El vocabulario del profesor es especializado; si no ha entendido algún concepto,

pregunte el signifi cado e intente incluir el término aprendido en su vocabulario habitual.

Concrete el diagnóstico, la explicación y la co-rrección de sus golpes con su profesor.

El diagnóstico es “lo que ocurre”: el contacto con la bola y cómo vuela...La explicación es el “porqué” de ese diagnóstico, porqué la cotactamos así, y porqué vuela así.

La corrección es la solución que nos da nuestro pro-fesor para resolver esos errores, bien con una expli-cación directa o mediante un ejercicio práctico.

Cualquier cambio en la realización de su swing afecta directamente al impacto y al vuelo de la bola: debe entender porqué. No deje preguntas en el aire: consulte y asimile la corrección. Practí-quela cuando esté solo y optimice su juego.

La fi nalidad de la clase es aprender al máximo, con pleno rendimiento. Concéntrese en la fi nalidad de la clase; absorba los conceptos y compréndalos. Evite las interferencias externas (otros jugadores, sonidos, etc). La concentración y la comunicación con su profesor son básicas para el éxito de la clase.

Antes de concluir la clase defi na con palabras sencillas y claras los conceptos aprendidos con su profesor: esta rutina le ayudará a asimilar y comprender lo aprendido y a valorar la nueva información. Resuma las explica-ciones en dos frases concisas: las frases breves y los conceptos resumidos son más fáciles de recordar.

Con los conceptos claros, relájese y realice otro turno de estiramientos al concluir. Practique y salga al campo. Anote los errores y dudas y plantéelos en la siguiente clase.

En las sierras situadas detrás de la capital de Palma de Mallorca se asienta la selecta urbanización de Son Vida. La nobleza gobernó

estas tierras desde el siglo XIII. El castillo medieval recibió su primer bautismo en el siglo XVI cuando la propiedad fue adquirida por Ma-teu Vida. Durante el siglo XX, el castillo sufrió amplias y extravagantes modificaciones incluyendo una torre. En 1961 fue convertido en un hotel de lujo y 3 años más tarde el primer campo de golf de la isla, el vecino Golf Son Vida, fue inaugurado.

On the hills behind the capital of Palma de Mallorca lies the select Son Vida Estates. Nobles governed over the properties from the

13th century. The medieval castle was first baptized in the 16th century with the acquisition of the property by Mateu Vida. During the 20th century, the castle underwent extensive and extravagant alterations cre-ating a castle complete with tower. In 1961 the castle is converted into a luxury hotel and 3 years later the island’s first golf course opened, the neighbouring Golf Son Vida.

A comienzos del siglo XIV, el Rey Jaume dio el nombre a laVilla. En 1349 tuvo lugar uno de los más importantes eventos de la historia de Llucmajor, la famosa Batalla de Llucmajor en la cual el Rey Jaume III perdió su vida y su reino.

The municipality of Llucmajor is the largest on Mallorca with 325 square kilometers. Stretching along the coast from s’Arenal to

s’Estanyol de Migjorn, Llucmajor has many estates and outstanding ex-amples of Talayotic settlements such as Capocorb Vell. At the beginning of the 14th century, King Jaume was given the title of the Villa. In 1349 one of the most important events in the history of Llucmajor took place, the famous Battle of Llucmajor in which King Jaume III lost his life and his kingdom.

Wide fairways are a feature of this course but many slope away unsuspect-ingly. Main hazards are the many trees lining the fairway. Well bunkered, its lakes may cause problems on five or six holes. The 10th hole is one of the best in Mallorca. This course is a test for players of all abilities.

Consisting of 3 courses, only Santa Ponsa 1 is open to the public. It boasts one of the longest holes in Europe, the 10th hole which is 590 metres long.A very broad course and beautifully set out it covers an area of 73 hectares. An 18-hole course recognised for its originality, with several extremely raised tees which offer unbeatable views of the Mallorcan coastline. Seven ponds and lakes are divided between six holes. Wide fairways are a feature of this course but many slope away unsuspect-ingly. Main hazards are the many trees lining the fairway. Well bunkered, its lakes may cause problems on five or six holes. The 10th hole is one of the best in Mallorca. This course is a test for players of all abilities.

Consisting of 3 courses, only Santa Ponsa 1 is open to the public. It boasts one of the longest holes in Europe, the 10th hole which is 590 metres long.A very broad course and beautifully set out it covers an area of 73 hectares.
