With Easter approaching, signs of the Easter Bunny can be seen all around town and in the media, but what is the real meaning behind Easter? To Catholics, Easter is one of the most important days of the

year, because it celebrates the Resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ, which is a major tenet of the Catholic faith. Leading up to Easter is Lent; the 40 day period of fasting, prayer, and repentance that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. During this period, Catholics prepare for the commemoration of the death of Jesus on the cross, Good Friday, and the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ three days later on Easter Sunday. Jesus paid for all of our sins through his life, death, and Resurrection, granting those who believe in Him eternal life in Heaven. So, where do the Easter bunny and Easter eggs come from? The use of eggs was forbidden during the period of Lent, that’s why on Easter Day the presence of eggs came to symbolize the joy and celebration of a new life and resurrection. Eventually, the tradition of children hunting for eggs laid by the Easter Bunny became popularly associated with Easter. But amongst the Easter egg hunting and enjoying the chocolate and sweets, let’s not forget the real meaning behind Easter.

Easter Religion Reflection

You've all seen her, whether you're a senior or not. Her golf cart has practically become a symbol of parking lot

festivities, if not all for Cardinal Gibbons High School. If you've guessed Sister Janet Rieden, you're correct! Those of you who haven't enjoyed her Western European Art History class have much to look forward to, and for those of you who have - prepare to learn more about the Sister we've all grown to love! Before joining the convent at age 21, Sister Janet studied English Literature at the College of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois. In her junior year of college, she found herself called to the convent for what she saw as a "good way to offer service." After receiving her degree and officially becoming a Sister, she started in Mansfield, Ohio teaching the fifth grade. She then transferred to St. Francis Academy in Joliet, followed by Saints Peter and Paul in Chicago. Sister Janet is currently in her 49th year at Cardinal Gibbons High School and has acquired an extensive resume with teaching experience in religion, Spanish, literature, and composition. Although she enjoys most every aspect of her profession, she claims that the best part of it all has been the interaction with her students.

Sister Janet's beloved trademark, the golf cart, has a story of its own. "One day Mr. Ott asked me, 'If I got you a golf cart, would you use it?' And sure enough next week there was the golf cart. It's a lot of fun to drive - sometimes I go out for little rides on the track," she said. Her advice to the graduating class of 2012 is to study hard and take advantage of all the technological advantages our generation has made. "Take technology seriously - you'll have to live with it."

National Signing The odds of getting an athletic scholarship

are very slim with the competition these days. These students overcame the highest mountains and the driest deserts to achieve these scholarships. Volleyball players Caiti Donahoe has signed to play at the University of Miami; Katie Hillman, has signed at the University of Delaware; and Leigh Andrew has committed to the University of North Carolina. Football players Nicco Whigham has signed to University of Central Florida; Erick Hallmon will play for Bowling Green College; and Chase Bender has signed to play at Colgate. Swimmer Ryan Rosenbaum has committed to the University of Florida.

Hall of Fame On Saturday, January 21st 2012, five individuals and two teams were

immortalized in the Cardinal Gibbons’ Hall of Fame. Brother Michael Brickman, Margo Miller Flack ‘98, Missy Meyer ‘91, Dave Montiel ‘89, the late Tommy Peragine ‘88, and the 1977 and 1978 Girls Tennis teams were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in a wonderful ceremony. The 1977 and 1978 Girls’ Tennis teams both won state titles. The individual honorees were all chosen by a selection committee and past inductees. All the inductees were a part of the ninth annual class at CGHS. After the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a lovely reception in the foyer of the gym.

Computers and technology have always been a huge interest to Bobby Nichols. He can answer almost any question about a computer. Since he has such an interest in computers and other electronics, he came up with a service project that incorporates the two. What many people don’t know is that electronics are full of dangerous chemicals; and if they aren’t disposed properly, they can damage the environment. In his service project, Bobby hopes to safely recycle computers and other electronics. His ultimate goal is to educate children about computers, so that they may have a chance to succeed in an increasingly digital age.

The summer before his freshman year of high school, Owen Bailey traveled to South Africa and met a little boy who touched his life. The little boy he met spent his afternoons playing soccer with no shoes. Owen found a way to help this boy, along with other South African children, by establishing an organization called “Share-A-Shoe”. He and his siblings have organized shoe drives at school and church organizations. This past summer, Owen and his family went back to South Africa with duffle bags filled with shoes for the children in the little boy’s village. So far, Owen has been able to send over 400 children a pair of shoes. He even partnered with Ethan Zion, a former cast member on “Survivor”, to send 200 pairs of cleats to a shanty village in Zimbabwe! Thanks to “Share-A-Shoe”, children in South Africa can enjoy playing soccer without sore feet.

Michael Anderson, along with Richard Lang and Robert Diaz, started an organization called Youth to Youth Sports Locker, also known as Y2Y. The concept of his organization is to collect, refurbish, and distribute used baseball and soccer equipment to underprivileged children. He started this organization in September 2008, and it is still a success today. Michael goes to different locations to collect the equipment; numerous collections are held at Coral Ridge Park. His organization even got in touch with the Florida Marlins baseball organization to deliver overflowing bins of equipment! Thanks to this organization, many underprivileged youths will be able to enjoy sports.

A Silver Knight is someone who succeeds well in both maintaining good grades and applying one’s special knowledge and talents to contribute service to those in need. This year, eight of our fellow students were nominated as Silver Knights. Each nominee has developed their own significant service project that should be recognized.

Knights Francesca Champin recently went on a trip to Canete, Peru to volunteer. While she was there, she cooked, cleaned, and taught the children about hygiene. She was surprised to hear that most of the children had never even heard of a toothbrush. While she was drawing for the children one day, the volunteer leader asked Francesca if she wanted to paint a mural for the school. Francesca accepted and was eager to help. When Francesca came back home, she collected over one hundred and fifty presents to be donated to the children in Canete. Francesca returned to the same village she volunteered at in February to deliver all of the presents to the children and their families.

Joey Dissette’s organization comes from the heart. His older brother, Jeff, suffers from a genetic condition called Fragile X syndrome. This is a disorder on the X chromosomes that results in autistic like symptoms and developmental delays. Joey’s mission is to spread awareness about this disorder and show people it is not as rare as they think. Joey’s organization is called the Junior Fragile X Foundation, which is a support group for kids with siblings with Fragile X, and they can talk about their experiences. Joey plans to have this organization open to everyone with siblings suffering from mental disorders.

When Richard Lang’s grandmother explained that there was a very poor school in Medellin, Columbia, Richard took the initiative to help. Richard organized a collection of school supplies for the young children through the Spanish Honor Society, along with other collections from family and friends. So far, Richard has distributed individual packages to over three hundred children. After graduation in May, 2012, he will be making his third trip to Medellin to deliver more goods to these children. Thanks to Richard, these young children will be able to learn and enjoy school the way they should.

Jennifer Bautista Drama Jennifer Bautista became interested in helping the fight against diabetes. She came up with a function called Dance for Diabetes, in which she threw a dance for all ages and donated the profits to diabetes research. The dance was held at the Memorial Regional Children’s Hospital. For an admission of five dollars, everyone was able to enjoy music, entertainment, food, prizes, and dancing! Jennifer also had a few guest speakers come to help get the message across on how to prevent diabetes. Overall, the Dance for Diabetes turned out to be a huge success.

March 2012 School News | 7The Procrastinator’s Guide to Passing the A.P. Exams

By MeganMcGee

Taking advanced placement exams can be stressful and nerve-racking, but you will be sure to pass with a few quick

tips. Obviously, the earlier you start studying the better, but we all have a procrastinator in us, so maybe you need a quick way to study. Whether you have two months or two weeks left, there is a way you can pass your exam. Make sure to follow these steps from the beginning to the end. Keep your head high, and know that with a little dedication, you can pass.

1.Even if it’s two weeks before your A.P. exam, your money will not go to waste. If you’re wondering which book to buy, ask your teacher or flip through books at the store. Consider the amount of time you have left for review; if you have three weeks or more to prepare, I recommend Barron’s or Cliffs A.P. These go more in-depth with the chapters of your textbook, and they have summaries of all the important sections. However, if you have less than three weeks, go with the Crash Course review books; these are much shorter, as they go through the chapters mostly with bullet points. All of these books are worthwhile, and I have used all in my own studies. Don’t be afraid to write all over the pages, as this will reinforce the concepts in your mind and help you remember answers during the test.

Purchase a review book.

2. Know the grading scaleIt’s important to take a look at how the multiple choice and essays are scored on your exam. This will help you understand that you don’t need to get all of the questions right in order to pass. In fact, on most tests you can get half of the multiple choice answers correct and still get a “3”. Each subject is scored differently, so pick up your review book and open to the first couple pages to find out the best way to ace your exam!

3. Find out what the key topics are It is impossible for one test to cover what you’ve learned over an entire semester or year, so the exams tend to focus on key topics. For example, in the 2001 and 2006 A.P. U.S. History exams, there were multiple questions on African American History. Find out what topics your subject’s past exams have focused on, and spend a little extra time going over them as you study.

4. Break it upArrange the chapters of your review books in your mind according to time periods, if you’re studying for a history exam. Think about things in large groups, and then go smaller. This way, you will be able to put yourself in a specific era for each question, and that makes things a lot easier, as well as rules out incorrect answers. For all subject exams, make sure to study the key terms in your review book. As you do this, imagine each term as it would be used in context. This helps you remember which section the term was from and therefore know the meaning. Also, it gives you context clues to help rule out wrong answers.

5. Reinforce I cannot stress enough the concept of going over your organized sections in your mind. Once you have these grouped, go through your review book(s) a few more times on the final days before the test. Skim parts that are still unfamiliar to you, and make sure to read the bold words and/or boxes. This information is often some of the most questioned, and the author has highlighted it for a reason.

8 |School Volume 50, Issue 4

6. Shoot for the moon If you’ve procrastinated and think you’re not prepared, still go into the exam with a positive attitude. You may not realize it, but you’ve retained a lot of information by paying attention in class. Go into the test shooting for “the moon,” a 4 or 5, and maybe you’ll land on a star and get a 3.

Continued from page 77. Don’t sweat it Despite what you may think, your teachers have prepared you well. They know what they are doing and how the test is laid out. When taking the test, breathe a little and remember how you would answer a question on one of your teacher’s tests. On the essays and/or oral exam, pretend it’s another one of your teacher’s tests, but this is the grade that will move you from your B to that A mother is always stressing. Put your best work into it, and don’t overdo anything with sesquipedalian words (see what I mean). The graders are looking for quality essays that contain “beef,” as Mr. Coyle would say. Most of all, make sure your beginning paragraph is phenomenal. This is the highlight of your essay, and it’s when you capture the reader’s attention. Impress him or her with your knowledge, and you will be sure to pass.

8. Chose the best answer Many times on a multiple choice question, more than one answer seems like it’s right. This may be true, but remember what your teacher has been telling you: the pointy-headed test makers are trying to get you to think too much into the question. Remember what you’ve learned, and choose the letter that best answers the question asked. 9. Have fun and do your best!

Just kidding; there’s really no way to have fun during a mind-draining exam that lasts more than a couple hours. Just do your best, ace the exam, and get out of there! You’re almost on summer vacation!

On February 3rd our Model UN club took a trip to the University of Florida for the ninth annual

GatorMUN conference. What is Model UN, you ask? Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations, and it aims to educate about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda. The participants role-play as diplomats, representing a nation in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. “It was a very fun and interesting experience,” said Sophomore Mary Ashley Keene. Congratulations to our delegate, Jonathan Foster (Catherine Haley) , from CNN for winning “outstanding delegate!”

Model UN Faces New Challeges

One of the most anticipated events of junior year occurred on Thursday,

January 5, as the junior class gathered at St. John the Baptist Church to celebrate the annual Ring Ceremony. Many families, friends, faculty, and staff joined the juniors for an inspiring mass celebrated by Father Callan. Many wonderful speeches were given by Principal Ott, Mr. Cubas, and junior class president, Keenan Bailey. After an immense ceremony and delightful reception, the junior class came to understand that this was not only a step up in the position of leadership for our school, but also a chance to exemplify the pride in being a Chief, while wearing their rings with honor.

While we were working hard and attending school as usual, education expanded beyond the four

walls of the classroom for Gibbons Seniors Caitlin Payne, Sierra Herbert, Taylor Selbach, and Tara Hennigar. These four students joined Brother Ferris on the annual Close Up Trip to Washington D.C. from February 12th to the 17th. Brother Ferris, who has been involved with this program since the 70’s, encourages this trip for all students, especially those who will be taking his Government class senior year. Not only do students attending this trip receive extra credit when taking his Government course, but they also receive the opportunity of using all of Washington D.C. as a classroom. Students participate in monument workshops, attend study visits, and meet with Congressmen.

Although this trip has already passed, there is still opportunity for next year, when Brother Ferris will be taking students to the Presidential Inauguration for an experience of a lifetime! Don’t miss out!

As the second semester of the 2011-2012 school year began, CGHS welcomed some special nationally-acclaimed visitors who offered artistic expertise and powerful insight to the student body. Hailing from

Yale University, The Duke’s Men of Yale Glee Club visited campus for a brief musical performance, including harmonic ballads and cleverly-choreographed show pieces. Audience interaction was an unexpected twist brought on by the Duke’s Men, that had the Cardinal Gibbons family thoroughly entertained. A few short weeks after the Glee Club’s performance, Jason Evert, founder of chastity.com, visited campus to give a presentation stating the importance of chastity in a Catholic teenager’s lifestyle. The attention of the students and faculty alike was maintained fervently throughout the hour-long presentation; and the message of “Romance Without Regret” was instilled in the minds of many listeners. Pamphlets entitled “Pure Manhood” and “Pure Womanhood” were distributed to the audience, and Jason’s informative advice resonated, especially to those who took the opportunity to speak with him privately. Such pristine visitors have set the track for a great semester at CGHS and were thoroughly enjoyed.

Wednesday, February 8, the Gibbons Boys Basketball team played against University

School in the District Semifinals Game. This matchup was a grudge match between University school and Gibbons. The Chiefs played valiantly but lost to the Suns, 47-63. The basketball team is looking forward to training even harder next year to win their rematch with University School.

The Gibbons Boys Soccer Team’s season was challenging, but their

record showed their success,12-4-4! From conditioning, to practice, to their games, they made it all the way to the regional semifinals against American Heritage, Delray. After a bunch of corner kicks and headers, the thrilling game ended with a loss of 4-0 for the Chiefs. The Chiefs still held their heads high in hopes of returning and winning next year.

The girl’s soccer team this year has proved to be incredible. Starting off their season, they

played against Coral Springs on November 2 and tied their first game. Following Coral Springs, they beat Taravella and Monsignor Pace with the amazing scores of 4-0 and 7-0 on November 7 and November 10. Despite the girl’s efforts and perserverance, they couldn’t beat them all and lost against Melbourne North Broward Prep, Somerset Academy and Chaminade, all close games. They didn’t let this get to them, as they won against University School, South Plantation, Archbishop McCarthy, and Mater Lakes with scores of 1-0, 3-0, 1-0 and 7-0! Looks like the Lady Chiefs were just warming up because they beat Ely, Coral Glades, Pine Crest, Jensen Beach and Deerfield Beach later that season! They beat University in district finals; but unfortunately, after a difficult regionals game, lost against American Heritage. “We all have worked really hard this year and have really grown as a team,” said senior Maylis Broderick. The Lady Chiefs are inspiring. They simply never go without a fight and, even after a loss, they do their best the following games. The players bond and their teamwork represents Cardinal Gibbons well.

Led by head coach, Frank Pettineo, the Cardinal Gibbons Wrestling team traveled

to the state competition held in Lakeland on February17, 18, and 19th. Four time State Champions, these boys win everywhere they go. There were nine wrestlers that made it to the state copetition; Jamel Morris, Jamal Morris, Anthony Vasquez, Andrew Wisdom, Victor Alfaro, Jeiko DaSilveria, Nick Davis, Rodney Thomas, and Russell Scott. Congratulations to Jamal Morris and Andrew Wisdom on their two-time individual state titles. The team is lucky to have the experience of the well-seasoned coaching staff to guide them. There is no doubt that the boys earned their title and will continue to succeed in the future!

A Florida native himself, Coach Calvin has been involved in Color Guard since he participated in

high school, where he did both DCI (Drum Corps International) and Independent Color Guard. He’s been teaching Color Guard at Cardinal Gibbons for five years now. Within those years, he’s snagged two first place wins, fifth place in a higher class, third and fourth place Calvin has also coached at Taravella, FIU, Monarch, and Plantation High, but he says Cardinal Gibbons is his favorite so far. When asked what his favorite part about coaching is, he responded, “I love watching the kids as they grow and develop, and how they change into independent young people. I also love what goes into the shows; the hair and makeup and everything.” He advises students to go and watch the shows to display school spirit for their classmates. The shows are a lot of fun to watch!

The Girls Basketball team wrapped up an outstanding season on February 14th

against Coral Springs Charter. They finished with a great record of 18-7, and made it to the regional semi-finals. They finished the game with a score of 36-50, but everyone played an amazing game. Five year coach Kevin Gordon led his team to a very victorious season, and will hopefully do the same next year.

Coach ApproachThe four year district runner up girls’ lacrosse team

has been under the leadership of Coach Claire Kelly for two years now. Lacrosse was a popular and growing sport when Coach Kelly grew up in Long Island, New York. She started playing lacrosse in the fifth grade, and continued to play when she moved to Georgia at the age of fourteen. She played lacrosse throughout her four years at Chattahoochee High School, and then continued to play at the University of Georgia.

By LuciaDeSanto

““ Coach Kelly first started coaching lacrosse in Oconee County High School in Georgia for a year, and then came to Parkland, Florida where she coached the Douglas lacrosse team for three years. Last year was her first year coaching at Gibbons, and she led the Lady Chiefs to the District Finals, where they unfortunately lost to Pine Crest, their rivals. Her hope for the team this year is to “win districts at home, under the lights.”

When asked what her favorite part of coaching lacrosse was, she replied that she loves the team aspect of the sport and enjoys watching the girls have fun. So, why come out and watch lacrosse? Well, not only is it a fun, high scoring, and action packed game, it’s also, as Coach Kelly says, “the fastest sport on two feet!”

By GiaManieriCoach Bolender, affectionately referred to as

“Beaver” by his tennis players, is no stranger to the game. His love for tennis flourished from an early age during his childhood in South Florida, where his mother founded a league and gave him the opportunity to get to know the sport at eight-years- old. After participating on the Cardinal Gibbons High School team, he proceeded to play in college for the University of Alabama, where he obtained an engineering degree. He

found himself returning to Gibbons to coach tennis and has found the experience extremely rewarding,”There’s

no other reward than getting a high-five from a kid,” he says. “Working with kids has been a gift that God has given me.” Coach Bolender’s extensive experience has led him to the title of Head Pro at

the Pompano Civic Center, and ideally he would like to retire as a coach and teacher. He has high hopes for the team this year.

The Coach There’s a new coach in town. Neil Brody just

started this year at Cardinal Gibbons coaching the girl’s softball team. Although fresh and new at Gibbons, this is not his first time coaching. In fact, he has won five national titles and four Florida State Championships! Who is Neil Brody? He was born in Totowa, New Jersey and later moved to South Florida in 1969. Throughout his life, he’s had a passion for baseball. He played as a pitcher for fifteen years on the Men’s Travel team. He started instructing Girl’s Fast Pitch Travel Team in 1998 and has been coaching ever since. He’s coached as both a hitting instructor and head coach at Florida Bible, Nova, Hollywood Christian, Chaminade, and Archbishop McCarthy High School. You might be wondering why he has moved around so much, since he’s extremely talented at what he does. Coaching softball isn’t his only talent; he has been involved in the music business his whole life. He’s even a band producer! He started playing the drums at the early age of thirteen, and later traveled with a band from age nineteen to twenty-three. Currently, he is the bandleader for one of South Florida’s number one show and

Coach Pisani said, “My favorite part of coaching is building long lasting relationships with the players, and keeping in touch with them even after they graduate.”

When asked about attendance for games, his answer was that

Gibbons students should attend all sports, but what makes the baseball team special is its concession stand: they have the best hotdogs and burgers. Coach Pisani’s last words about baseball were, “The only two things you can control on the field are your attitude and effort!”

Water polo coach, Mark Veszi, has transformed a group of

sheer swimmers into knowledgeable water polo players in a short four years. He started coaching this extreme water sport in 2009, and he taught the game’s most basic components to the players, who knew nothing of the sport. This year’s seniors are what are remaining of the original Aqua Chiefs water polo team. Under Veszi’s instruction, the team is bound to grow in the future. Having played for four summers in Hungary, the world’s number one country for Water polo, Mark experienced the most intense

training in the water. He was passionate about the sport, so he brought his love for water polo to Cardinal Gibbons in 1999, when he was a junior. This started the original Redskins water polo team, which finished 13-1 his senior year, making it to quarter finals in states. After graduating from Gibbons in 2000, Veszi attended college at St. Francis in New York on a full scholarship for water polo. He continued to stay connected with the game after college graduation by working as a referee on the national level. In 2009, Mark Veszi was called to start up the new

team at Cardinal Gibbons, and he has been striving to help the players advance in their game. “We’re looking to win districts this year for both boys and girls, as well as to improve on the records from last year. We will keep growing and winning as a team,” said Veszi. Determined to succeed, the Aqua Chiefs will conquer in the pool this year. Make sure to support them and watch the intense games!

This spring we welcome a new coach to the CGHS family. Coach Jeremiah Whitfield, the new track coach, grew up in Fort Lauderdale

and attended Fort Lauderdale High School. After high school, he went to work at the Sheriff’s Department. Around that time was when he started to coach track. His former coach asked him to come back and help coach at Fort Lauderdale High. Along with coaching the Flying L’s, Coach Whitfield coached at Hallandale High School. When asked what his favorite part about coaching is he responded, “Seeing the track team’s progression from the beginning of the season to the end of the season.” Come see the track team under the new direction of Coach Whitfield, because the Chiefs are going to be on fire this year!

Coach Mike Zarate is beginning his fourth year as the head coach of the Varsity Boys Volleyball Team. Coach Zarate, who grew up in the suburbs

of Chicago, is a graduate of the University of Florida. He began his love for the sport while he was in college, and he started coaching at a high school in Gainesville. When Zarate started coaching at Gibbons, he knew the boys had a lot of potential. This year, he hopes his team will win Districts, and of course, make it to States. Coach Zarate says his favorite part about coaching is watching the athletes improve every day. “Volleyball is a tradition at Gibbons, and our boys work really hard to reach their goals.”

Here at Cardinal Gibbons, many students excel in athletics, but one group in particular shows

consistent excellence in their chosen sport. Combining academics with superior athletics makes these students the athletes to watch in 2012. Lacrosse star Maylis Broderick is a very dedicated athlete. She’s played lacrosse all four years she’s attended Gibbons, as well as girls soccer. Aside from school, she plays lacrosse on a travel team year round, and she’s been offered two scholarships to play in college. Her lacrosse coach calls her a very great athlete and a great leader to her teammates.

Ayrton DeBeauffort was introduced to the sport of tennis at age three by his father. He loved the sport and picked it up so quickly that he wanted to play all day everyday. He’s played for Gibbons all four years that he’s attended, and he’s loved the experiences that it has given him. Ayrton says he’s honored to be chosen to be the tennis athlete to watch for. Though this is George Rushing’s first year running track, his coach felt as though he deserved the ‘Athlete to Watch Title’. The sophomore got into track in fifth grade, at age ten, as a means of trying to become a faster football player, and realized he had the potential to become a great runner as well. George competes in three different events; the 100 m relay, the 200 m relay, and high jump. He will continue to run track in the future, as well as play for the Cardinal Gibbons football team.

Even though Corry Short is only a freshman, he’s made a big impact on the JV Boys Volleyball team. Before playing for the Saint Coleman’s team, Corry first picked up volleyball when he was ten. He wanted to help his sister Mary Kate, who was on last year’s state champion team, practice her game. He’s watched both his older brother and sister play here for several years, and he’s excited to finally be playing here himself.

Softball player Nicole White, has been excelling in her sport since she was five years old. Nicole made the Varsity team as a freshman and has had a starting spot either pitching or playing shortstop since then. Excited to be chosen as captain this year, Nicole says that her favorite part about playing softball is the competition, and that just being on the field makes her happier than anything else. She also says, “I very much want to get a scholarship. My favorite would be Florida Gulf Coast, but I just want to play for as long as I can.” She’s a great leader on and off the field.

Senior Thomas Woodrey has played baseball for as long as he can remember. His older brothers got him involved in the sport and has always had a passion for it. Thomas loved competing with his brothers, and they were always there to push and help him along the way. He is also a four year varsity player and has signed to play baseball at the prestigious University of Miami. “No matter what’s going on in my life, when I step on the ball field it all goes away for a little while,” Thomas said. Baseball has taught Thomas to always push himself, and has also taught him many lessons about life. “Baseball has truly made me who I am both on and off the field.”

This year the Annual Cardinal Gibbons Raffle was a huge success. We surpassed our goal of $120,000 with $122,432! One of the best parts

about the raffle, besides raising money for our school, is the prize money. The first place winner won $3,000, second place won $1,500, and the third place winner won $500. The winners of this year’s raffle were junior, Carolyn Martin; junior, Hannah Hunter; and senior, Cailin Cooney. Good job selling your tickets! Proceeds from this years raffle will help improve our athletic department facilities.

The teacher calls out, “Anyone have raffle tickets for me today?,” and half the students in the classroom eagerly raise their hands. Are you

sitting there wondering how in the world they are selling them so fast? To find out, I surveyed two classes from each grade, and these were the results. Maybe this can help you find out the secret to raffle success.

Tablets such as the iPad and e-readers such as the Kindle have been the prominent

method of consuming digital publications. The debate rages on about which type of device is better suited for this task. In terms of usability as a reading device, the decision ultimately comes down to the device’s display, because it is the only major feature that seems to differ. Tablets generally use LCD displays. LCD displays function by selectively blocking and allowing the passage of light through colored points. A single set of usually red, green, and blue points makes up a single pixel. Because this display technology relies on backlighting, it requires no external light source for the user to be able to view the display. Conversely, if ambient light around the device is brighter than the backlight, it renders the display nearly

useless, such as when used in direct sunlight. Almost all e-readers use a form of electronic ink; the most common form being E-Ink. These displays, rather than emitting light, work by reflecting light. Because of this, the display requires some form of external lighting, but will not be obfuscated by intense external light. These displays also will not cause eye fatigue from prolonged use, like LCD displays will, making them better suited for reading. When it comes down to it, the two main factors you have to consider are the price of the device and the type of display you want to read off of. If you read a lot of content for long periods of time, I would suggest you invest in a Kindle. However, if you plan to do anything beyond reading, a tablet is the way to go.

Hand In Hand, We UniteBy MichaelMeillarec and AlexisFrat

Cardinal Gibbons has many diverse students. The International community accounts for a minor, invaluable group. The International Club wanted to poll the International students on why they chose Cardinal

Gibbons High School instead of a high school in their own country. There are a few students from other countries like France, Australia, and Venezuela who love our school as much as we do. They have the same teachers, learn the same things, and eat the same wraps every day.

Adele Barre

Rebecca Sharkey Rebecca Sharkey is currently a senior at Cardinal Gibbons, but not too long ago, she was living in Sydney, Australia. Her parents chose for her to come to Gibbons, because they liked that it was a Catholic School; and they had heard good things about it. They moved to South Florida in December of 2010 to be closer to family. Rebecca’s favorite things about America are the weather and the accents, and she would “do anything to have one.” The strangest thing that has happened to her in America is listening to the type of questions people have about Australia. Every day people ask her questions such as, “Have you ever ridden a kangaroo?” or “Do you have a pet wombat?” or “Do you know Agent P from Phineas and Ferb?” She thinks the thing about Australia that surprises people the most is that the answer is “no” to all of these questions. Even though she misses Australia sometimes, she loves America. Rebecca loves Gibbons because it is a spirited school and everyone is nice. Her favorite classes are Psychology and Composition, and her favorite food in the cafeteria is the wrap. “Gibbons is in some ways a lot harder than school in Australia, because there’s a lot of homework and there are tests on every chapter. In Australia, the tests are much more difficult and count more, even though there are fewer.”

Andres Tagliafaro

Born in Maraiba, Venezuela, Andres Tagliafaro is currently a freshman at Cardinal Gibbons.

He came to America in August looking for a better educational opportunity. Upon hearing about Gibbons from some friends, he and his parents decided this was where he belonged.

Andres speaks English and Spanish. Even though he gets homesick and misses his friends, he can’t resist our beaches. “The strangest thing I’ve seen in America was the boat parade going through the Intracostal, but there are definitely some other pretty weird things going on in this country.”

Adele Barre is just like every other freshman, except for one thing. She’s from Paris, France! She says that Florida is very different from Paris. She describes Paris as being very international, while the Sunshine State is more “laidback.” Adele loves Cardinal Gibbons and, like the rest of us, loves the days off we get from the raffle. On one of the days off, you may just catch her ice-skating, running, or playing a quick game of lacrosse. She is involved with Key Club and Student leadership. Like all South Floridians, Adele loves the beach, the pool, and hanging out with friends. As much fun as she has here, she still misses France. She didn’t go back in the winter because her family is in America; but, she did get to visit last summer. She misses the cold weather and the food most.

22 |Who’s Who Volume 50, Issue 4

This past winter, two new children were born into the Cardinal Gibbons family. Temperance Grace Horan (below), the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horan, and Isabella Rosalie Zamora, the daughter of the trainer, Mrs.

Houck, were born within ten days of each other. Isabella, or Bella for short, was born on December 4, 2011 at 7:50 pm, weighing in at seven pounds, five ounces, and nineteen inches. Though she is Mrs. Houck’s first child, she has two half brothers on her dad’s side: Tony and Victor.

I Got You Babe By BaileySpence

Ten days later, on December 14, 2011, Temperance was born, at six pounds, eleven ounces, and 20.5 inches long. She is the first child of Mr. and Mrs. Horan, but she’s part of a large family in the making. Mrs. Horan has three siblings, who all had children within a few months of each other; her oldest sister as well as her brother had children in October, and her sister had triplets in November.

Sushi & Thai

Sushi has become a mainstream food among our generation, and you may be wondering why this Japanese way of preparing raw fish is so popular? For one, most rolls are very healthy; secondly, they taste like no other food; and third, eating/ making sushi is a great experience with friends and family. You may be concerned about consuming raw fish because it can be dangerous, but your risk of becoming sick after eating

Talay Thai $2233 E. Atlantic Blvd. Pompano Bch.

You have probably driven past this restaurant many times on Atlantic

Boulevard without noticing it. Despite your previous overlooking of this sushi/

Thai restaurant, make a point to watch for it and stop in next time you drive by. The atmosphere may not be as appealing as others I have suggested, but do not let

this fool you about how their food tastes. In my opinion, Talay Thai has some of

the best, most unique sushi rolls in South Florida. You should have your server recommend his favorite roll; he knows

best, and you will leave with a full tummy.

2. Tee-Jay Thai Sushi $$5975 N. Federal Hwy, Fort

Lauderdale. Located north of Commercial

Boulevard off US1, this restaurant offers great cuisine as well as

atmosphere. It is one of the “fancier” sushi/Thai restaurants that teenagers dine at, but it maintains similar prices

to other sushi restaurants in the area. The unique part of the Tee-Jay experience is sitting on cushions on a platform in part of the restaurant. This is a must to your sushi/Thai

experience at Tee-Jay’s.

sushi is greatly reduced if you dine at the right places. I eat sushi once or twice a week, and I have never gotten sick because I make sure my sushi is made by someone who knows what he/she is doing. If you’ve never tried the Japanese way of preparing raw fish, I dare you to give it a try at one of these restaurants; they are my favorite in South Florida.

Take Sushi $$2714 E Atlantic Blvd. Pompano Bch.

Located in a hole-in-the-wall spot off Atlantic Boulevard, Take Sushi is a favorite of many Pompano locals. It has a warm atmosphere, and you will almost always see someone you know. Take’s chef’s special rolls are fantastic and always fresh, and there are also items

on the menu such as chicken fried rice that are very popular. If you can manage to fit dessert in your stomach after chowing down on delicious sushi, try Take’s famous fried cheesecake. If you want to impress your friends when suggesting Take Sushi, make sure to pronounce it “tock-aye,” and they’ll think you’ve been going to this restaurant for years!

3. Galanga Thai Kitchen & Sushi Bar $$$

2389 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors. Galanga is a contemporary-style sushi bar located off of Five-Points in Wilton

Manors. The outdoor patio is perfect for date nights because of the fire lanterns

that are lit on chilly evenings. Galanga’s menu features high class Thai foods and

sushi, and they taste excellent. If you aren’t into sushi, try their egg rolls as an

appetizer and the chicken pad Thai as an entrée. Go here for celebrations or when you feel like splurging because this treat

is a little pricey, but it’s well worth it.

There were thirty student volunteers! “Cardinal Gibbons should be proud of their students. They are great examples of what is so good about the youth today. We look forward to working with the Interact club on future projects. It was a wonderful day made better by their “Service Above Self’.” said Terry Robinson, co-chair of Challenge Air.
