Cardinal Gibbons High School AP Physics 1 Summer Assignment 2014-2015 Welcome to AP Physics 1! AP Physics 1 is a first year physics course that covers the equivalent of a semester of college-level physics. It is assumed by the College Board, as well as your instructor at Cardinal Gibbons, that you enter this class at the same academic level as a freshman student at a major university. Due to the large amount of material in the AP curriculum and the short amount of time we have to cover that material, this course moves at a very fast pace…so there is some work to do this summer. To get you ready for AP Physics, you need to review some of the mathematics of the course. While physics is different from math, math is the most useful tool to use to study physics. Physics is basically math with toys. So, in order for you to succeed in AP Physics, you need to be able to express and manipulate your thoughts in mathematical terms. AP Physics 1 Summer Assignment: Your summer assignment is to read the first chapter in our textbook and to do the problems at the end of the first chapter. All of the math included in the first chapter of our textbook should be familiar to you from your previous math and chemistry courses. All Chapter 1 questions and problems are included in this document, but you must submit them through the listed Google forms. (You must be logged into your Gibbons Google account to access this document.) All deadlines must be met during the summer – you cannot submit any part of the summer assignment after the specified deadline.
