Following the public and political outrage over the death of a young techie Subasree in the city after her scooter met with an accident when a flex banner fell on her a fortnight ago, many of the flex banners placed in various localities in and around the neighbourhood of Mogappair have been re-moved by the authorities con-cerned. However, activists and residents pointed out that while the flex banners were gone, the iron frames on which they were hosted remained precariously at some placed in Mogappair.

While some of these iron frames and scaffolding have been removed completely, in some places they have been removed and kept precariously on the roadside and in some other areas they remained in their original locations.

Just like the rest of the

Chennai Metropolis or for that matter even rural areas in Tamil Nadu, the neighbour-hood of Mogappair and its surroundings too were not immune to the banner culture. Mogappair Mail had on a cou-ple of occasions highlighted how these banners posed a threat to motorists as well as how residents welcomed an order of the Madras High Court banning installation of flex banners.

However, in practical terms the flex banners were seen all over the place with not only local politicians but also fans of film stars installing them at many places. Besides, even for religious functions, weddings, ear boring ceremonies and deaths people of the neigh-bourhood kept installing flex banners at will especially in key traffic junctions causing a threat to motor is t s and walkers.

Now the authorities have

cracked down and ensured that the flex banners have been re-moved at almost all places in the neighbourhood.

“However, the authorities have failed to remove the iron frames and scaffolding that held these banners at various places. The problem is that if these scaffoldings are frames are not removed then in the future it will become easy for someone to simply host a flex banner over it. Not just that over time these iron frames would get rusted and the risk of them falling on the road is real. I saw one such frame that was removed was kept along the compound on the road side at the entry of road that leads to Mogappair village. If a child is walking past it one can’t rule out the risk of the frame falling on him/her,” pointed out Ke-savan, a resident of Mogap-pair. “The authorities must remove all the iron frames,” he added.

Over the past fortnight or so, the neighbourhood of Mogap-pair West and East including Eri Scheme has been witnessing multiple civic patch works at dif-

ferent locations. Due to this at several spots the roads were partially barricaded causing mi-nor hitches for vehicle riders.

Residents at various locations in the neighbourhood said that contractors engaged by civic au-

thorities carried out patch works by placing iron barricades but with no advance notice to the people and road users. “On the Eri Scheme Main Road itself – that connects Mogappair East with Mogappair West – we were

able to spot barricades at different locations. The contractors hur-riedly carried out certain patch works and poured cement con-crete to cover the dug up loca-tions,” said Raman, who resides in a by-lane off the Eri Scheme Main Road.

A cross-section of residents said that it appeared as if the work was carried out ahead of the monsoon season. At many places, the contractors engaged by the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion as well as those awarded tenders for big projects by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB or Metrowater in common parlance) have been undertaking major civic works for the past two years. The civic patch works are being considered as an extension of those ongoing works.

“Our problem is not in them executing the civic patch works. But our concern is that it should be done in a thorough profes-

sional manner following basic civil engineering standards so that the infrastructure withstands the onslaught of moving vehicles for a long time. From what we could see at many places they have covered the areas where works were undertaken with ce-ment concrete while the rest of the road is tarred with blue metal. This will create an uneven sur-face and the in long run lead to battering of roads,” complained a resident, who wished not be named. According to her, the contractors should at least ensure that the roads are re-laid with blue metal and gravel and tarred so that the surface is even.

“In fact, instead of carry out such patch works, they should have thoroughly re-laid the road after the ongoing civic works,” she added.

and realistic way by debutant Babu Tamizh. A promising foot-ball player, who gets seriously injured in his very first game, decides to sit back and analyze the events that led to this situa-tion and to study the strange turn of events encouraged by the subtle information that is re-vealed to him. Whether he was able to identify the reason for his

problems and setbacks, and did he manage to overcome them is the plot of this movie, which has been picturised in a most enter-taining and engaging way with appropriate mix of fantasy and thrill. Radhakrishnan cranks the camera, while Rahul is trusted with the editorial responsibilities.

Women more active mobile gamers than men in India: Survey

Contrary to common social perceptions, mobile gaming is no longer limit-ed to a specific gender and women are more active than men when it comes to playing mobile games on their smartphones, and they play up to several times in a week, a new survey by CyberMedia Research says.

According to CMR’s ‘Go’ programme that sur-veyed 2,000 smartphone owners, an astonishing 95 per cent of women sur-veyed are very active mo-bile gamers as compared to 86 per cent men.

Seventy-five per cent of those surveyed played games for up to two hours on their smartphones, with women (78 per cent) spending more time than men (72 per cent) while 33 per cent of those surveyed played mobile games sev-eral times in a week.

The results have broken some of the most common notions associated with mobile gaming. Women are active in gaming. Yet, it is true to say that they prefer some unique games, and stick with free-to-play games and generally speaking, avoid in-app

purchases. “They are hy-per-casual gamers, and very much underserved. For the gaming developer community, this cohort represents a significant opportunity,” said in a statement.

Women attributed their taking to mobile gaming to multiple factors, including their peers and friends, to their spouses and even, ads on social networks.

Among the key benefits cited by the women, play-ing mobile games is seen as a major stress buster and mood elevator, thus, serv-ing as a distraction from

the constant work pres-sures or daily chores.

The relative conve-nience of playing games on smartphones, any-where, anytime, is an ad-vantage, cited the women.

“Ranging from profes-sionals playing mobile games in between breaks at work, or while on the commute, to women play-ing games at home amidst breaks from domestic

chores, to elderly women keeping up with technol-ogy -- the demographic profiles of female gamers span across age groups,” added the statement.

Taxes and charges can be paid at the cash counters in Metrowater head office, area offices or depot offices.
