A Concert hall is a cultural building, which serves as performance venue, chiefly for classical instrumental music. Many concert halls exist as one of several halls or performance spaces within a larger performing arts center and, where appropriate, the name of the arts centre is included. Many larger cities have both public and private concert halls. The three finest concert halls in the world are generally considered to be Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Boston's Symphony Hall, and Vienna's Musikverein[1].

A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre. However, many PACs have performance halls designed for specific purposes such as symphonic music or chamber music. The adaptability of performing arts centers differentiate them from concert halls, opera houses or theatres.

A convention center, in American English, is an exhibition hall, or conference center, that holds conventions. A large, cavernous public building with enough open space to host public and private business and social events for the surrounding municipal and metropolitan areas. In British English very large venues suitable for major trade shows are known as exhibition centres while the term "convention centre" is sometimes used for intermediate venues between exhibitions centres and "conference centres", which are much smaller and contain lecture halls and meeting rooms.

An opera house is a building where operas are performed. The venues are usually constructed specifically with opera in mind, although other performing arts may be performed there.A theater or theatre is a structure where theatrical works or plays are performed or other performances such as musical concerts may be given. While a theater is not required for performance (as in environmental theatre or street theatre), a theater serves to define the acting and audience spaces and organize the theater space as well as provide facilities for the performers, the technical crew and the audience.

Standar/Besaran Unit/Fasilitas

Convention centers typically offer enough floor area to accommodate several thousand attendees. Convention centers rent space for meetings such as: corporate conferences, industry trade shows, formal dances entertainment spectacles and concerts. The largest in the United States is McCormick Place in Chicago. Larger Convention centers located in resort areas also host conventions that attract additional visitors to the municipality. It is not uncommon for large resort area hotels to include a convention center.There are as many types of theaters as there are types of performance. Theaters may be built specifically for a certain types of productions, they may serve for more general performance needs or they may be adapted or converted for use as a theatre. They may range from open-air amphitheatres to ornate, cathedral-like structures to simple, undecorated rooms or black box theaters. Some theaters may have a fixed acting area (in most theaters this is known as the stage), while some theaters such as black box theaters, may not, allowing the director and designers to construct an acting area suiable for the production.

Contemporary theaters are often non-traditional, such as very adaptable spaces, or theaters where audience and performers are not separated. A major example of this is the modular theater, (see for example the Walt Disney Modular Theater). This large theater has floors and walls divided into small movable sections, with the floor sections on adjustable hydraulic pylons, so that the space may be adjusted into any configuration for each individual play. As new styles of theatre performance have evolved, so has the desire to improve or recreate performance venues. This applies equally to artistic and presentation techniques, such as stage lighting.

All theatre structures, regardless of type, contain certain basic elements. The most important of these areas is the acting space generally known as the stage. In some theatres, specifically proscenium theatres, arena theatres and amphitheaters, this area is permanent part of the structure. In a blackbox theatre, the acting area is undefined so that each theatre may adapt specifically to a production. In addition to these acting spaces, there may be offstage spaces as well. These include wings on either side of a proscenium stage (called "backstage" or "offstage") where props, sets and scenery may be stored as well as a place for actors awaiting an entrance. A Prompter's box may be found backstage. In an amphitheater, an area behind the stage may be designated for such uses while a blackbox theatre may have spaces outside of the actual theatre designated for such uses. Often a theatre will incorporate other spaces intended for the performers and other personnel. A booth facing the stage may be incorporated into the house where lighting and sound personnel may view the show and run their respective instruments. Other rooms in the building may be used for dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, spaces for constructing sets, props and costumes, as well as storage. All theatres provide a space for their audience. In proscenium theatres and amphitheaters, these areas, like the stage, are often a permanent feature of the structure. This area is known as the auditorium or the house. Of course, like the stage in a blackbox theatre, this area is also defined by the production. In addition, many theatres may provide areas specifically designated for the comfort of the audience. These areas include a lobby where tickets and concessions may be sold, restrooms, and other areas where the audience may relax before, in between or after performances. These areas may be known as the "Front of House" or FOH.

History

The Esplanade occupies the site of the former "Satay Club" a popular food haunt for Singaporeans which had been discontinued prior to the Esplanade's construction. Currently the "Satay Club" is re-allocated next to Sembawang Shopping Center. Officially opened on October 12, 2002, the total cost of constructing the Esplanade is estimated at SGD 1 billion including the estimated land value and SGD 660 million for the building costs. On 5 July 2005, the opening ceremony of the 117th IOC Session was staged in the Esplanade, featuring a 30-minute long performance aimed at showcasing Singapore's multi-cultural heritage to her international audience.

Design

The building was designed by two architectural firms working in conjunction: by the London-based Michael Wilford & Partners (MWP) and by DP Architects (DPA) of Singapore. The original design, presented to the public in 1994, consisted of unadorned glass cases over the theaters. Such a design would have created a greenhouse in the tropical climate of Singapore, but according to DPA director Vikas Gore some form of shading was always intended [1], and a cladding of aluminium sunshades was added to the final design. The unique architectural design has been said to have an appearance similar to either a durian (a tropical fruit) or the eyes of a fly. Many Singaporeans casually refer to the Esplanade as "The Durian".

Facilities

The Esplanade contains world-class performing spaces, coupled with a wide range of professional support services and facilities. Other than performing venues, the Esplanade also contains meeting venues, as well as other lifestyle and arts related services. The main highlights of the Esplanade - the Concert Hall and Theatre, are connected to the main concourse via a foyer, while the Esplanade Mall is accessible through an entry point located between these 2 halls.

Concert Hall

Esplanade's crown jewel is its elegantly-designed Concert Hall, which has been acclaimed by various performers from around the world. It features world-class acoustics designed by one of the world's most renowed acousticians, Russell Johnson of ARTEC Consultants Inc, USA, and is an ideal venue for concerts, recitals, and other performances. There are only four other halls in the world with such state-of-the-art acoustics. The orchestral platform is able to hold up to 120 musicians. Above it is the movable acoustic canopy, which comprises of three pieces each weighing 17 tons. This canopy serves the purpose of a sound reflector, both to get the right acoustics to suit the ongoing event, and also to enable musicians to hear themselves on stage. As such, the hall can cater to a diverse range of musical performances. The hall's reverberation chamber, used to vary the acoustic characteristics of the Hall, is an open void that spans three levels and has a volume of 9,500 cubic metres, or about the volume of 4 olympic sized swimming pools. It boasts 84 computer controlled doors and flaps. Each door weighs between three to 11 tons, with the largest door being 10.5 m in height and the smallest door being 2.2m in height. This chamber is smartly hidden behind mahogany timbre ribs that frame the front walls of the Concert Hall.

The concert hall's Pipe Organ comprises 4470 pipes and 61 stops. It was custom designed and built by Johannes Klais Orgelbau, one of the worlds renowned organ-builders. The Concert Hall is able to comfortably seat 1,600 people over four levels in an intimate setting. Types of seats include Stalls, Foyer stalls, and Circles 1, 2 & 3. There are another 200 seats in the chior stalls behind the concert hall stage, which may be converted into Gallery seats for an additional 200 people. There are also four exclusive VIP Private Boxes, where one is able to have a close-up view of the performance.

Theatre

The Esplanade's 2,000 seat Theatre is a form of an adaptation of the horseshoe form of a traditional European opera house. Spread out over four levels, it is designed for all genres of the performing arts, including but not limited to Asian and Western arts, Musicals and plays, classical, traditional and contemporary forms and advanced multimedia performances, whether they are large scale, or intimate in size. The Theatre is home to Singapores largest performing stage (39m length x 23m width), and this caters for a diverse range of performances. There is a main stage and two ancillary stages of similar size to facilitate technical set-ups and quick scene changes. The main stage is framed by an adjustable proscenium arch, allowing the stage width to be adjusted from 12m-16m. There is also a 30m high fly tower, as well as an adjustable orchestra pit that can hold up to 100 musicians. Although the theatre is considered large with 2000 seats, the viewing distance between the furthest seat and the stage is just 40m, thus allowing patrons a clear view of what's going on on stage.

Recital Studio

The fan-shaped Recital Studio is able to contain 250 people and is a good venue for small scale and intimate chamber musical performances, as well as presentations and meetings. In addition to its timbre flooring, the studios wall and ceiling finishes are designed in order to ensure good acoustics. The Studio is also commonly used as a rehearsal space for orchestras and choirs.

Theatre Studio

The Theatre Studio, with a capacity of 220, is a small setting for experimental theatre and dance presentations. The performance space, equipped with movable and retractable seating, offers a wide variety of configrations . Although small, it is equipped with adaptable staging, lighting and sound systems, therefore enabling it to accommodate different kinds of performances. As it is approximately the same size as the Theatre stage, the Theatre Studio is also commonly used for full production rehearsals.

Jendela

Jendela means window in Malay. The Esplanade Jendela is a 215sq m exhibition space on the second level dedicated to the presentation of the visual arts. With a distinctive architecture and panoromic views of Marina Bay, the Jendela hosts many art exhibitions, some of them which are full scale shows that are integrated with other events at the Esplanade.

Outdoor Venues

The Esplanade features two outdoor performing venues. They are the Waterfront Stage and the Stage@Powerhouse, located along the promenade. These venues stage regular free performances, meant to liven up the arts scene. Other than that, the building also features a large roof terrace with a panoramic view of Marina Bay and the City Area. There are also courtyards and open spaces which can be used for various activities.

Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is the prickly hedgehog-like outline landmark of Singapore across Esplanade Bridge and Marina Bay. It opened in October 2002 with much fanfare. Nicknamed, quite aptly, 'the Durians' (after the pungent, spiky local fruit), the twin silver spiky leaf hedgehog cladding domes of this arts complex couldn't be more of a contrast to the colonial ensemble of the Padang. Love it or hate it (and we love it), the Esplanade complex has become the poster boy of contemporary Singapore, a shining example of the artsy, creative side of the island state.

This S$600 million performing arts centre was the product of Singapore's recognition that it needed iconic buildings to keep pace with the competitive international Tourist industry, with equally grandiose dreams of establishing itself as a cultural landmark akin to Australia's Sydney Opera House. Designed by Michael Wilford, the British architect quit the project in 1995 over unexplained differences, leaving home-grown company DP Architects to complete the job.

Esplanade, situated on reclaimed land along the waterfront, was built with public money and has been in the pipeline since the 1970s. It wasn't commissioned until 1993 and construction didn't start until 1996. The controversial exterior is made from 7139 variously angled aluminium shades that maximise the natural light while shielding the glass roof from the sun; by night, internal lighting makes the building glow a cool green. The interior has the hushed, slightly awestruck atmosphere you get in truly special Buildings.

Public opinion of the building design has been divided. Despite their fruity nickname, or comparisons with Madonna's infamous bra and overturned bathtubs, the theatre complex's twin glass domes, covered in spiky metal sunshades, do not take their design reference from tropical fruit or celebrity breasts, but from the natural geometries of nature and traditional Asian reed weavings. Varying angles and geometrics make the roofline morph and mutate across the building "the way feathers on a bird's neck gradually change in size and orientation", according to the project's director Vikas Gore. But what happens inside is perhaps of greater interest to the Arts community.

The 6-hectare (15-acre) site of the Esplanade houses the twin auditoriums which are both visually and acoustically spectacular (they both rest on rubber pads to soak up external noise and vibrations): a Concert Hall of 1,600 seats (with acoustics designed to handle both the sonic blasts of Cantopop and the delicate trills of a Mozart sonata) and a Lyric Theatre of 2,000 seats (complete with the latest stage technology and a full-size orchestra pit). Additionally, you will find an open-air amphitheatre, practice studios and rehearsal rooms which also serve as smaller performance venues, outdoor sapces for informal performances and sculpted gardens by the waterfront.

There are a number of possibilities: the Esplanade can promote the development of a Singaporean aesthetic; it can present the best and biggest of visiting acts; and it can attract casual visitors with no interest in the Arts with its informal spaces and eateries. Whatever happens, it will be a force to be reckoned with - there are more seats under its roof than in all the other venues combined - just as it will change the harbour skyline by virtue of its position and scale. This massive complex, which seems a little hemmed in by its rather small site, is a realisation of Singapore's aspiration to be Asia's hub of the Arts.

Worth looking out for are the regular free performances outside the Buildings, which are advertised either on the theatre's website or in the monthly "What's On" guide.

Salah satu gedung pertunjukan yang cukup representative di wilayah Tangerang adalah World Harvest Center yang berada di kawasan Lippo Karawaci, tepatnya di Jl. Gunung Rinjani No. 6 Taman Himalaya.

Gedung yang berdiri sejak tahun 2001 ini memiliki luas bangunan sekitar 1030 m2 dibangun sebagai gedung pertunjukan yang berfungsi sebagai gereja dan juga kantor pusat organisasi nirlaba yang bergerak di bidang keagamaan, World Harvest. NGO ini memiliki kantor perwakilan di Semarang dan beberapa kota di dunia, seperti California, Amsterdam, Singapura, Saitama Ken-Jepang dan Seoul, Korea Selatan.

Bagian bangunan yang paling menarik pada World Harvest Center ini adalah aulanya yang diberi nama The Dome of The Harvest. Dengan kapasitas 1.500 tempat duduk yang terbagi menjadi 2 bagian, yakni lantai dasar sebanyak 1.150 kursi dan sisanya 350 berada di area balkon, The Doom berulangkali menjadi lokasi berbagai konser musik hingga lokasi syuting reality show salah satu stasiun TV beberapa waktu lalu.

Menurut Bp. Andreas selaku Building Manager World Harvest Centre, penyelenggaraan konser musik di lokasi ini belum terlalu banyak setiap tahunnya, hanya sekitar 3-4 kali. Namun ketika sejak 2 tahun lalu, The Doom juga disewakan untuk tempat pesta pernikahan, aula ini cukup laris disewa oleh masyarakat yang hendak mengadakan pesta pernikahan di lokasi tersebut.

Salah satu ornament dekoratif yang paling menarik dari aula ini adalah kubahnya alias Doom yang diberikan aksen langit, dengan sentuhan lighting khusus maka efek dari ornament dekoratif ini menjadi luar biasa, seolah gedung tersebut beratapkan langit. Menurut Bp. Andreas, pengecatan kubahnya ini menggunakan teknik khusus dengan mendatangkan ahlinya dari Italia. Menjadi suatu hal yang wajar mengingat biaya pembangunan World Harvest Center pada tahun 2001 ini sekitar Rp 4 milyar.

Fasilitas lain yang terdapat di The Doom of the Harvest ini adalah stage alias panggung berbentuk setengah lingkaran dengan fasilitas sound dan lighting yang cukup lengkap. Selain balkon dengan kapasitas 350 kursi, pada bagian samping kiri dan kanan panggung terdapat function room yang berfungsi sebagai storage sound system maupun fitting room. Sementara operator sound system berada di split level yang terdapat di lantai atas balkon. Dengan berada di bagian depan, maka kualitas sound dapat terjaga dengan baik.

Akses masuk ke aula The Doom berada di lantai 2 bangunan yang dilengkapi dengan fasilitas 2 buah elevator/lift dan juga tangga. Sementara World Harvest Center sendiri dilengkapi dengan sebuah toko buku, caf, ruang-ruang kelas, ruang-ruang kantor, ruang tamu, ruang karyawan, ruang meeting dan kantin.

Meski dari luar bangunan tampak bergaya Joglo-tidak terkesan sebuah gedung pertunjukan nan mewah, namun interior ruang, termasuk lobby yang cukup dengan hiasan water fountain memiliki gaya art-deco. Sehingga kesan mewah begitu terasa ketika kita masuk gedung ini.
