She started acting when shewas 3 months old by appearingin Ambala Anjulam (1959) andhas so far acted in 175 films inTamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malaya-lam and Kannada.

She started acting on stageat the age of 5 and has acted inmore than 5000 stage plays.She has had various roles inmore than 30 TV serials.

She has produced and di-rected a number of TV serialswhich have been aired by Sun,Jaya, Kalaignar, Vijay andother channels. Many of herproductions have baggedawards.

Nagar) has advised domestic power consumersnot to pay any money for digital energy meters beinginstalled by Tamilnadu Generation and DistributionCorporation (TANGEDCO) in place of conventional energymeters since this is being done as part of the CentralGovernment sponsored program at ‘no cost’ to theconsumers. The Association said that reports in somenewspapers alleged that the staff who come to replace theold meters with the digital ones are duping unwaryconsumers by demanding a ‘fee’ ranging from Rs. 175 to Rs.250 per meter.

In view of the clarification, the Association askedconsumers to report such demands to higher officials.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 29The Tamil move music charmer G. Ramanathan continued

to be in top form as the 1950s rolled over the blue horizon andmelted into the 1960s.

To use a cricket idiom, he played strokes all round the wicketwhich included folk tale romances like ‘Sri Valli’, the adaptationof foreign movies (‘Scaramouche[) like ‘Arasilankumari’, andpolitically motivated historic movies like ‘VeerapandiyaKattabomman’.

‘Kappalottiya Thamizhan‘ is a much discussed film evenafter half a century and more because of its political signifi-cance and the various consequences of the movie, some ofwhich are not complementary to the makers.

The film had an excellent cast consisting of some of thebiggest stars of Tamil cinema like Sivaji Ganesan, GeminiGanesan, K. Savithri, S.V. Subbaiah, S.V. Ranga Rao, T.K.Shanmugham, Chittoor V.Nagaiah and supported by lesserstars like T.S. Durairaj, A. Karunanidhi, M.N. Kannappa, T.P.Muthulakshmi and top stuntman ‘Stunt’ Somu.

‘Kappalottiya Thamizhan’ was launched by the noted mul-tilingual filmmaker, B.R.Panthulu who produced movies inKannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. He directed movies andalso played roles in most of them. He had been known as acharacter actor in Kannada theatre and cinema before hecame into Tamil cinema in the late 1930s. He made memorablemovies based on the lives of Karna, Sundara Pandian and thisfilm about Va. Vi. Chidambaram Pillai, popularly known asKappalottiya Thamizhan, a sadly underrated leader of theIndian Freedom Movement.

The film was based on the biography of V. O. ChidambaramPillai written by Ma. Po. Si. (M. P. Sivagnana Gramani).Popularly known as Va. Vu. Si, V. O. Chidambaram Pillai hadfounded the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company to breakthe monopoly of the British over maritime trade.

This film won the Best Feature Film in Tamil at the NationalFilm Awards but it did not make Panthulu a happy manbecause it was not successful at the box-office.

Sivaji Ganesan played the role of the patriot in his flamboy-ant style and some critics thought it was loud. In a review, acritic commented that people saw only Sivaji Ganesan and notthe great patriot!

Gemini Ganesan played the patriot Madasamy while Savithriplayed his wife. S. V. Subbaiah, a fine character actor, playedSubramania Bharathiyar. Asokan played the white Sub Col-lector Ashe who was murdered on a train in Maniyachi junctionby a patriot, Vanchinathan (Balajee). S. V. Ranga Rao playedthe role of the British Collector. T. K. Shanmugam playedSubramania Siva, a close associate of Chidambaram Pillai.V.Nagaiah played the role of a top lawyer and father ofChidambaram Pillai.

The film had fine music. All the songs, nine of them to beexact, had been penned by Subramania Bharathiyar andtaken out of his poetic output. The songs are ‘Endru thaniyum’(Tiruchi Loganathan), ‘Chinna Kuzhandigal’( P.Susheela),‘Kaatru Veliyidai Kannamma’ (P. B. Sreenivos and P.Susheela),’Nenjil’ (Sirgazhi Govindarajan), ‘Odi Vilayadu Paapa’ (SirgazhiGovindarajan, Jamuna Rani and Rohini), ‘Parukulley NallaNaadu’ (Sirgazhi Govindarajan), ‘Thanneer vitto valarthom’(Tiruchi Loganathan), ‘Vande Matharam enbom’(SirgazhiGovindarajan), and ‘Velli pani malai’ (Sirgazhi Govindarajan,Tiruchi Loganathan, L.R.Eswari and Rohini).

G. Ramanathan’s melodious music became popular, morefor the content and of course for his tuneful music.

Interested parties mostly used Chidambaram Pillai forpolitical propaganda and, after returning from his jail sentenceand retiring from his legal practice, he settled down in Perambur,Madras, and was virtually unnoticed as he wandered thestreets of that crowded area. To make a living he was forced tosell his law books and he sold kerosene as a vendor and ran ashop selling groceries. However, nobody bothered to extend hima helping hand. His grandson, reduced to poverty, later workedas an office boy in some company. Even today, the VOCbirthday is celebrated with press ads by interested parties, butnobody bothers in any other manner. His son, who used to workfor the American Consulate and was a good friend of the writer,had caustic comments to make about politicians and othersabout how they exploited his father, his reputation and morebut did not bother to help him when he was down and out in hislater life.
