Monisha, my daughter-in-law, gave us a running com-mentary on the incursion of good old friend Neelam, churnedup by one of our loving enemies who confined its love for usand the good old neighbour Andhra coast, in an annualvisitation.

“Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, the sixth President of India, isfurious”, said Monisha at the cyclone-namer for the desecra-tion of his family name and tilt against the fair sex aping theAmerican tradition of naming typhoons after women, thelatest being Sandy which killed many and made New Yorklook a prehistoric conglomeration of shanties.

I am sure friend Obama wouldn’t have, seeking a secondinnings, named the windy menace Sandy unless he was sickand tired of the Presidency and wanted a long rest afteralienating millions of women’s votes.

These quirks of nature give us some respite from theKejwallic wallops that disturb our televisionic domesticityand disturb our ability to use our natural gift of thoughtformation. So I have taken a long overdue sabbatical and amin Bangalore with wife Lakshmi, daughter Neethi and herhusband Ullas and their son Manu and daughters Nitya andDiya. Ullas bought a 12000-rupee Afghan tom cat whichmakes the domestic scene complete in spite of Bangalore’srun of transient governments. One lives and learns, butmany refuse to learn, which is a greater tragedy.

By Ajai SreevatsanBefore stepping into Guruva-

ppa Street in Kotturpuram,Gopu Govindaraj (56), a post-man with 34 years of experi-ence, looks up at the sky andutters a silent prayer. He hasbeen chased by dogs far toomany times to keep count.

“It is a daily affair,” he says.“I think my uniform makes melook like a Chennai Corpora-tion dog catcher.” Sometimes,he drops all the letters in hishand and runs. The barkinganimal, which is also scared bynow, runs in the opposite direc-tion. The spectacle plays outalmost every day around 2 p.m.

There is also trouble of thebovine kind.

“If I leave my cycle unat-tended even for a few minutes, stray cows would start eatingall the letters,” says Govinda-raj.

“The bull fight that happensin Alanganallur every year isnothing compared to the regu-lar scuffles I have had withcows, while I try to grab moneyorders from their mouth. Thecows especially love thick cal-endars and books such asReader’s Digest. Whether thesubscriber knows or not, thecows roaming on the streetknow the exact day of deliveryand would be waiting. And if Ilose items, I’ll have to pay thepenalty,” he adds.

It’s all part of just anotherday at work for people likeGovindaraj, one of the over5,000 postmen who roam thestreets of Chennai daily, whether it rains or shines.

Nearly half of them are tem-porary staff, and are called

Whether it is rain or shine, they deliver

“delivery agents.”Most deliver about 500 let-

ters on an average every day.But they get no special ben-efits and the pay is not great, they say.

The salary could range be-tween Rs. 5,000 and Rs.15,000per month, depending on se-niority and whether they arepermanent employees.

Dogs chasing postmen mightbe a funny sight to most people, but without health benefits, some temporary staffers haveeven died of dog bites, saysGovindaraj. He speaks abouthis friend Selvaraj, who diedafter a dog bit him while he wason duty in Arumbakkam.

“We roam around withoutfood and water and look likebeggars. There is no respect,”Govindaraj says.

Few things have changed inthe last 20 years in the waypostmen do their jobs. The onlymajor difference is that thedepartment has started com-puterising most post offices, which has made sorting easier.Postmen still have the ‘footbeat’ and ‘cycle beat’ system.S. Sadasivam, a postman, says: “During the rainy sea-son, we are still given only anumbrella, a practice which wasfollowed during the British Raj.How can I ride a cycle?”

Since then, there have cer-tainly been some changes. S.Gangadharan, who deliversspeed posts, sports sunglassesand drives around only on amotorcycle. “I keep runninginto Blue Dart and ProfessionalCourier guys. They come wear-ing a tie. I want to show themI can also look tiptop.”
