LYON’S ROARThe Queen and I have something in common. She has just exceeded al l her predecessors, and specifically her great-great grandmother Victoria, in length of reign. Of course leadership is a privilege as well as a duty. I have the same feelings as the second year of my recycling as your Prez comes to a close. We are constitutionally bound due to elect new officers by the end of the year and will do this in November. I will be taking a break, but I hope many of our existing strong team of officers will stay on for continuity. I hope that you, the membership, will also step up to the plate (crease?) and support your club by taking an active role as a VJC officer for the next two years.

Looking back over the last two years, I do believe the VJC has progressed in some important areas. Fortunately, past Prez Dr Ron Gaertner blessed the VJC with our first ever-healthy bank balance. This was due to his hard work, dedication, his financial acumen and his leadership in the VJC’s successful hosting of the JCNA AGM in 2011 and the JCNA Challenge in 2013. Thank you Ron.

Our recent Concours at the Williamsburg Winery made a profit, thanks to Dr David Glick’s sponsorship efforts, and the VJC treasury is still in good shape under the stewardship of Treasurer Bill Sihler. Lyons Tales is continuing to get bigger, brighter and better thanks to Editor Brad Purvis. We have new bylaws and a new website. Our membership is a record 100+ under the guidance of our membership chair Ron Mitchell. One of our challenges will be to integrate these new members. Your current officers will be conferring on these issues next month.

Our one big event in September was supporting the big “Classics on the Green” show at the New Kent winery. The theme was “Cars you never heard of ” and Bruce Woodson assembled an interesting collection. My humble Austin-Swallow was a most modest participant, particularly when displayed next to David and Hazel Laughton’s splendidly functional 1933 Wolseley Hornet, which they drove from Urbanna. The weather was splendid too, and the show was fun and well organized as usual. We had a VJC hospitality tent, handed out membership information, greeted old friends such as VJC ex-VP Dr Bill Massey with his silver Mk2 and sampled a little of the local product.

Our planned drive to support “Wings, Wheels and Keels” on September 26 was cancelled due to weather. I imagine the show, which was advertised as being the last, was heavily impacted. It must be terribly disappointing to all those who worked hard. Our local Chesterfest was pretty much washed out too. (continued next page)

However, the VJC has been invited by the Shenandoah Valley folks to support the Waynesboro show on Oct 3, and more information will be provided elsewhere in LT. I cannot attend Waynesboro as Una and I will be at the Shaw Theatre festival, North of the Border, in Niagara-on-the –Lake, Ontario. We may have a VJC October event later in the month, before the weather closes down.

Our personal Jaguar stable news is that we decided to keep Una’s black, low mileage 1997 XJ6, and treated it to a total base coat/clear coat repaint at the local Maaco. It looks almost Concours again, for about $1450. The 1997 XJ6 is the best and most reliable used Jaguar sedan in my opinion, confirmed by my daughter Sara’s “S-Type” 4.0 which went into limp mode due to accelerator module failure, dropped a window, then suffered rear brake seizure, all in the last month.

Happy fall Jagging to all.

VEEP VIEWS

Sherman will return next month with more pithy tales from Jaguardom.

In the meantime, here’s a snippet from Hagerty Insurance. hagerty.com says our own Skyline Drive is one of the top ten autumn viewing routes. As a matter of fact, it is number one on their list!

Skyline Drive, Luray, Va.: The best way to ride the sky — on wheels — is by taking the historic and twisty 105-mile Skyline Drive along Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Roadside flowers bloom all season long, even in the fall, further complimenting the vast colors that illuminate the tree lines. The captivating route takes travelers through forests, tunnels, along rivers and along mountains. It runs the entire length of the Shenandoah National Park, home to wildlife large and small. OUT ON A LIMBWith the driving and show season rapidly coming to a close, you may notice this issue of LT is noticeably thinner than those past. This is due to several reasons, such as the aforementioned end of season and the dearth of time and material at hand. As David H. mentioned in Lyons Roar, next month will be election time for officer positions in the VJC. Our long-suffering President has vowed to take a well deserved breather and several other stalwart officers have expressed their desire to step down at the end of this term.To be sure, it is not easy to sustain enthusiasm for extended periods, and thus we need active volunteerism from other members. We have over 100 members in the VJC, yet only 8 to 10 make a regular

contribution and only a few more come out to participate. Nowhere is this more evident than in the newsletter. I know I have not been able to participate in many of the Club’s activities due to my variable work schedule and I’m sure many of you face the same dilemma. In addition, it can be a long haul from Charlottesville to Norfolk or Williamsburg to Danville, which can adversely impact attendance. That said, there are ways to contribute. You could organize a breakfast meeting, such as a Jaguars only Cars & Coffee. How about a barbecue in your backyard or even a cocktail hour in your local pub? Tech sessions can be fun too. These would serve as a venue to exchange experiences, tell tall tales and reap more benefit from your membership. Likewise, take a moment to shoot me a picture of your Jag with a paragraph about how you came to own it or your last Jaguarian project.

In addition, the Club needs members to step up and provide leadership. Every position is open and several will go vacant if other members don’t come forward. If you feel you would make a good president, regardless of how many Jags you own (or don’t - I’ll get to that in a minute), or if you have some expertise in building and maintaining a web site or editing a newsletter, or keeping track of things like money or membership numbers, then come on down! Get involved. Be the ball.

Unfortunately (or not) I had to make a difficult decision this past week concerning my daily driver 2009 XF-SC. After a long period of woes and back and forth with Jaguar concerning the differential, along with numerous additional and expensive repair bills appearing every other month or so, I decided to move on. Although I loved the performance and comfort of the XF, like you I have to have a reliable car for day-to-day transportation. The XF was not, and it was becoming a money pit. Thus the deed was done. I’m sorry to say the “new” car (new to me anyway) is not a Jaguar and thus, your humble Editor is now Jaguarless. With the acquisition of “Cissy” six months ago, garage space currently does not exist for a project Jag, but at least Cissy is British; LBC I believe is the correct moniker.

Coming up, is the SVBCC Car Show (assuming this tome reaches you in time). It is a non-affiliated event in Williamsburg, put on by European Cars Williamsburg. If you have any other events you would like to see added to the calendar, please send them to me so I can include them in Grab the Keys. If anybody in the Club attended the JCNA’s last Challenge Championship in Wisconsin, I’m sure your fellow club members would like to hear about it. And remember; If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.

- Brad P., Editor

15 September, 2015 - Jaguar Land Rover celebrated its vehicles appearing in the new Bond adventure, SPECTRE. Cars, including the Jaguar C-X75, Range Rover Sport SVR and the iconic Land Rover Defender, stole the show as they were unveiled in public for the first time at the palatial Thurn und Taxis in Frankfurt.Naomie Harris (Moneypenny) and David Bautista (Hinx) were guests of honour at the glamorous event showcasing special stunt vehicles used in the latest instalment of the James Bond series.  Guests were entertained by British singer and musician John Newman, who performed a number of top ten hits from his album.  SPECTRE, the 24th James Bond film, from Albert R. Broccoli's EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment, sees the Jaguar C-X75 drive through the moonlit streets of Rome in one of the movie's most iconic high speed chase scenes.   Driven by Hinx, played by David Bautista, the C-X75 supercar, named the most advanced Jaguar ever created, was provided by Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) in collaboration with development partner Williams Advanced Engineering headquarters in Oxfordshire, England.  SVO was created in June 2014 to focus on meeting the increasing expectations of today's most discerning and enthusiastic Jaguar and Land Rover customers.  Working on the development of high performance versions of existing models, luxury bespoke commissions and limited run collector editions, it represents the very pinnacle of the two iconic brands.  Specially modified Land Rover Defenders and the fastest, most powerful Land Rover ever, the Range Rover Sport SVR also star in major action sequences shot in Austria.  The highly capable Defenders were constructed by the JLR Special Operations division with huge 37-inch diameter off-road tyres and enhanced body protection to tackle the challenging terrain of the snow-covered mountain roads used for filming.

Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations, John Edwards, said: "For Jaguar Land Rover to once again be a part of the iconic vehicle line ups in one of the most celebrated film franchises in the world represents a proud moment for us.   It's an incredible opportunity to showcase production and concept cars alike and we look forward to continuing this relationship well into the future.”

F PACEJust ahead of the All-New F-PACE’s debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show Auto Express visited Jaguar HQ in Coventry to meet Jaguar Director of Design, Ian Callum and his latest car.

“The important thing for me was this was a Jaguar shaped like a crossover, it wasn’t a crossover that was pushed into the shape of a Jag,” said Callum when showing them around the All-New F-PACE.

In their article, Auto Express confirms his aim has been achieved. “From the front it’s unmistakably Jaguar. The headlights are familiar to those who’ve seen a new XE or XF on the road, and the gaping grille has been carried over from other models in the range.” They continue, “F-Pace looks imposing and sporty, yet different enough to stop you in your tracks... It’ll be a formidable sight when it finally arrives on UK roads in the spring.”

Explaining the advantages of Jaguar’s lightweight monocoque they write, “Unlike rivals that use shareable platforms, Jaguar uses a tweak-able aluminium architecture that ensures no two models are restricted by wheelbase or ride height. As a result, Callum was able to position the wheels exactly where he wanted them – resulting in short overhangs and impressive interior legroom.”

A further advantage of using aluminium is efficiency, key for Fleet & Business buyers. Here the F-PACE acquits itself admirably. “The entry-level rear-drive manual will return 57.7mpg and emit just 129g/km of CO2. The flagship diesel looks great on paper, too – returning 47.1mpg and sprinting from zero to 62mph in just 6.2 seconds.”

On the technology front the F-PACE impressed with “the most advanced Jaguar tech ever… a Wi-Fi hotspot allows eight different devices to be connected, while it’s possible for four different videos to be streamed at any one time.”

They sign off by saying, “It certainly stacks up favourably against those cars it will be expected to compete for sales against.” (Courtesy JLR & Auto Express)
