From the Pastor

A few weeks ago, I was doing some “people watching” in downtown Cedar Falls. Colette was shopping in the small, one-of-a-kind stores, and I sat on a bench taking in the sights and sounds of a beautiful day. It’s always interesting to me to observe people who pass by.

Some of the people appear happy and excited about the day. They smile when they meet others, and some even stop to talk to strangers. There are other people who shuffle along without taking time to notice or acknowledge others around them. Life for them has become a treadmill.

It’s easy to lose track of and stop enjoying the present moment. Perhaps we have plenty to do, but our “busyness” has lost its meaning. We can become so caught up in our tasks or concerns of living, that we lose sight of the larger picture of life.

The church can help us keep the larger perspective in mind. Within the life of the church, we share one another’s joys, concerns, and sorrows. Together we search for meaning, hope and new life. Through prayerful study and seeking, our lives can take on new purpose and direction. We don’t have to be swamped and overwhelmed by the daily concerns of life. Most people who live their lives in a faith community discover life is no longer a treadmill, but a thrilling journey of trust, hope and love.

May God bless our journey of faith!

See you in church,

Pastor Scott

Our Church’s Financial Update Our church’s finances are still in a pretty good shape. Through August, our total general fund income is about $17,000 less than our expenses. This is not unusual, because we receive less income during the summer months than the other months in the year. I still expect our general fund income for the entire year will be about $10,000 less than our expenses. We should not have any problems paying our bills, salaries, and apportionments through the rest of the year, because the general fund balance should be high enough. The capital and memorials funds should be alright through the rest of the year too.

Through August, we had $28,956 in our general fund bank account, $9,478 in our capital fund bank account, and $1,840 in our memorials fund bank account.

Through August, we received $172,971 for the general fund, which includes pledges, plate money, church use, and miscellaneous giving, $8,450 for the capital fund, which is used for capital projects, and $1,595 for the memorials fund, which is used for other special projects and causes.

On the expense side, we spent $189,967 from our general fund through August, $14,728 from our capital fund, and $5,906 from our memorials fund. We paid all our conference apportionments payments through September.

Thank you for contributing to the life of our church, whether it is your financial giving, attending and participating in worship, Sunday school, or special events, being on a church committee, or volunteering to do something else. Try to keep up with your pledges to the general and capital funds throughout the year. If you have any questions about our church’s finances or want a copy of the latest balance sheet or treasurer’s report, contact the church office or me.

Al Yakish, Finance Committee Chair

The COLOR of COMPROMISE: The Truth About the American Church’s Complicity in Racism

Cedar Valley community members are invited to join a five-session study series on the book The Color of Compromise: The Truth About the American Church’s Complicity in Racism by Jemar Tisby (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2019). This local study is being conducted in association with the Iowa Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. In The Color of Compromise, Jemar Tisby takes readers back to the roots of sustained racism and injustice in the American Church. … Tisby’s historical narrative highlights the obvious ways people of faith have actively worked against racial justice, as well as the complicit silence of racial moderates. Identifying the cultural and institutional tables that must be flipped to bring about progress, Tisby provides an in-depth diagnosis for a racially divided American Church and suggests ways to foster a more equitable and inclusive environment among God’s people. (Zondervan) Schedule Wednesday, October 2, 2019 - 10:00-11:30 am Wednesday, October 9, 2019 - 10:00-11:30 am Wednesday, October 16, 2019 - 10:00-11:30 am Wednesday, October 23, 2019 - 10:00-11:30 am Wednesday, October 30, 2019 - 10:00-11:30 am Cedar Heights Community Presbyterian Church 2015 Rainbow Drive Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613 For further information, contact: Rev. Missions & Outreach - Opportunities to Serve

A special offering will be taken on October 27 for the 20

th anniversary of Iowa Justice for Our Neighbors, a

United Methodist-driven ministry that welcomes immigrants into our communities and churches by providing high-quality free or low-cost immigration legal services and that educates and advocates for immigrants and refugees.

Clinics are located in Cedar Rapids, Decorah, Des Moines, Marshalltown, Columbus Junction, Ottumwa, and Storm Lake with only 3.5 paid attorneys.

In 2018, JFON provided services to 1200 new clients from 60 countries. Cedar Rapids, alone, served 146 new clients from 12 countries from March-July, 2018.

How are services provided to so many clients with such a small paid staff? Some legal assistants help, some attorneys volunteer their time to serve immigrants, and a large number of caring volunteers help with scheduling and other “behind the scenes” tasks and by helping immigrants fill out the paperwork to determine if the attorneys can help them.

John Rothlisberger, who serves on both the National and State JFON boards, reports that funding is very limited, that there has been a loss of some significant funding sources, and that clinics have not been held for the last several months due to the large number of clients that are currently being served by such an extremely small staff. Financial support is vital at this time if Iowa is able to support these folks who are looking for answers, for hope, and for a safe home environment.

Let's continue to welcome our immigrant neighbors with our compassion and generosity.

World Communion offering October 6th

Around the globe, countless gifted and qualified people face financial obstacles that hinder them from preparing for the vocation God has given them, especially youth and young adults. For ethnic students who will be the first generation in

their families to attend college, or for those people of color who have not historically had access to resources that make higher education possible, the World Communion offering goes to provide scholarships to these deserving folks. Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can

use to change the world.”

November 2nd: Hygiene kits, which help disaster victims reclaim their dignity and self-respect, will be put together for Ingathering on November 2nd. Approximate cost is $12, and items include 1 new hand towel (15”by25” up to 17”x27”) 1 new washcloth 1 large, sturdy comb (at least 6 “ of teeth) 1 toenail or fingernail clipper (no emery boards or metal nail files) 1 bath-sized bar of soap in wrapper (3 oz bar or larger) (no Ivory or Jergens) 1 new adult size toothbrush in original sealed wrapper 10 adhesive bandages (3/4”by3”) common household bandages acceptable 1 one-gallon size re-sealable bag If you prefer monetary giving instead of shopping, the Missions committee will be happy to shop for you. Money is needed by October 27th, please.

COLLECTING FOR CUNNINGHAM

St. Timothys is an Education Partner with Cunningham School in Waterloo. One of the things we have done for many years is save Hy-Vee receipts. Hy-Vee gave Cunningham a check for almost $1500 last year, so it is definitely worth our effort.

Also please save the EDUCATION Box Tops on all General Mills products. Other items needed are: Prairie Farms milk lids, and never refilled printer ink cartridges, and Tysons labels.

There are plastic bins on top of the Communicenter for your convenience. Jane Teaford
