NOTTINGHAM CASTLE DAY OUT VISIT. This year we missed our Days Out visit to Crich in July and I told you that I should try to arrange a visit for later in the year. I have planned a day out for us to Nottingham Castle on Thursday December 9th. Also known as the Castle of Curious Rebels, it has just re-opened after a £30 million revamp. There are inspiring art collections, an exhibition of Paul Smith's work as well as the Rebellion Gallery, the Museum of the Mercian Regiment, grounds to explore and a tour of the caves. They can offer a light lunch of soup and sandwich for £8.25 per person or a sandwich platter with crisps and salad and a fresh fruit basket for £9.50. Murder/Mystery Evening Come and join your u3a friends for an evening of murder and mystery in the Community Room at the Wycliffe Rooms on Friday November 19th. Arrive at 7 pm for your three course meal which will be served at 7.30 pm. The cost is £25 per person and we are in for a fun evening I am sure. Richard Hill's Guilty Party Productions will be entertaining us with a murder most foul and we shall sit at tables of 8 to try and discover the culprit as a team with a prize for the winning table. You do not need to book a table of eight as couples will be put together if necessary. The lights will be dimmed at the beginning of the evening and the MC will introduce the context and the suspects. These will be available for you to interrogate in order to try and discover the guilty party. You can book at the September meeting and pay on that day if possible as places will go to the first 72 people who come up with the money. The meal will consist of soup, a chicken dish and then a crumble. If you are vegetarian or vegan, please let me know so that your dietary requirements can be fulfilled. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting and taking your booking. Linda

POETRY READING Coordinator: Betty Wilson We started our first meeting since the lockdown with a glass of sparkling Rose wine in celebration of being back together again. We had a great meeting - beside a lot of chatter and laughter our topic was to choose our 3 favourite poems. There were some superb poems chosen which were a joy to listen to. There were various topics and contrasting styles like: The Night Mail by W H Auden, The Listeners by Walter de la Mere, Home Thoughts from Abroad by Robert Browning, Meg Merrilees by John Keats, Whitsun Wedding by Philip Larkin, The Brooke by Tennyson and They Should Have Asked My Husband by Pam Ayers, and several more. Many of these poems were favourites because

Page 3: LUTTERWORTH - u3asites.org.uk

thy reminded us of our school days or memories of other important happenings or places in our lives. Our October meeting was about Creatures Great and Small. The topic for our November meeting at Betty’s, 2 pm as usual is The Elements - Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. Refreshments Betsy. Any new members welcome. Betty MUSIC AND MEMORIES

Music and Memories group 1 Gwenda has kindly offered to take on the co-ordinator’s role for this group. I have handed over contact details for everyone and Gwenda will be in touch about the next meeting. A big thankyou to Gwenda and to all those who have hosted our musical afternoons since we started this group. Nohline Ruff Music and Memories group 2 I have contacted all the current members of this group. Haven’t yet had replies from everyone. Several people would still like to come along but their current circumstances mean that they are unable to commit to co-ordinating the activity. One member is willing but is currently nursing a broken arm so couldn’t host the group at present. So the jury is out at the moment! Maybe a few of the people who have joined our U3A recently would be interested in taking part. The group is based on the format of Desert Island Discs and everyone brings along a couple of pieces of music to play that might also have an anecdote or memory to go along with it. We have been taking it in turns to host the session and there is a half time break for a cup of tea and a biscuit and general chat. I would be willing to talk with anyone who is interested. Nohline Ruff

GROUP 1 New Coordinator: Gwenda Jones

I have taken over as co-ordinator of this group which is a very friendly sociable group who just like to listen to their favourite music and the memories it evokes. At the moment we have a vacancy for one new member. If you are

interested in joining us, please contact me at the general meeting on October 12th. Gwenda Jones

SINGLES DINING Coordinator: Brian Fowler At last after many months of not being able to gather round a lunch table to chat and enjoy good food the opportunity at last returned and 14 Happy Diners met at The Chequers Country Inn, Ullesthorpe on Thursday 23rd September. It was good to have some members who have joined our U3a in recent months and as we awaited our chosen meals there was a happy buzz of conversation. Group leader Brian set out plans for the hostelries that we will venture to in forthcoming months. The next lunch will be taken on Thursday October 21st when we will travel to the delightful village of Saddington and The Queens Head pub restaurant where we have enjoyed delicious meals in the past. At the U3a Meeting in The Wycliffe Rooms in October Brian will be taking bookings for the Christmas Lunch at Ullesthorpe Court Hotel. Anyone wishing to join the group is invited to contact Brian, either at a monthly meeting or by dropping an email to [email protected] Brian Fowler PETANQUE Coordinators Sue Sharp and Rae Flowerday 11 members enjoyed a morning playing Petanque on 1st September. Weather was kind to us yet again. So while weather is mild we will continue. Next date is 15th September. Just let us know if you cannot attend. Rae A very enjoyable morning was held on Wednesday 15th September. Our next game will be on October 6th at 10.30 am and the final game of the season will be at 10.30 on 20th

Alan's programme detailed the effect of the rests in music. Wait for it.............. increasing the tension in Verdi's overture , “The Force of Destiny”; Haydn having a jokey surprise in his Symphony. No.46 and finally Sibelius' last interrupted chords in his Fifth Symphony. Lots of other tacet examples also in lovely music. In the interlude we had twenty seconds of Cage's famous 4'33”. Pause...........crotchety John reminded quavering members to apologise to the host if they could not make the meeting. A really fascinating theme, Alan, and to be “breve” Hamlet's dying words will now focus our listening more.

Next meeting on October 21st at Tony's at 10:00am.

John Peverley TOPICAL/CURRENT AFFAIRS GROUP Coordinator: Richard Whittington 1 The problems caused by second homes. About 10% of households own a second home, some for holidays, some for working away and some as holiday lets. The majority are in the southwest. Probably, the biggest problem is with the holiday lets and homes. In south Devon they are essential to the local economy, but they also push up house prices to the extent that locals cannot afford them and the number of properties to rent is reduced. Some areas are overcrowded in the summer and empty in the winter. Young people cannot afford to stay and there are insufficient permanent jobs with a career structure, so they leave, meaning staff for hospitality have to be ‘imported’ in the summer. Overcrowding in the summer causes problems for hospitals, road networks, policing etc. But everybody wants/needs a holiday and with Covid this is increasing in the UK so the problem may get worse. 2 Should all pro tennis players be vaccinated, and by extension, other sports? The group was very positive that everybody should be vaccinated unless they have health problems. All sports players come into very close contact with team members/opponents. Care home workers are now obliged to be vaccinated. There was a case recently where a mother and daughter working in a care home both contracted Covid and died within a fortnight of each other. One of the core values of the NHS is ‘Do no harm’ so should all NHS staff be vaccinated? Will the hardcore of 5 million unvaccinated be a reservoir of future infection and perhaps new variants? Perhaps everyone who goes to large events should have to prove they have been double vaccinated? 3 ’I thought that we could all agree that a human life is worth more than an animal one’ This was a quote from a recent newspaper article concerning the transporting of animals from Afghanistan. According to a recent survey 40% of people think that an animal life is worth the same as a human life. In the short time available we disagreed with this survey. The next meeting will be on October 6th at 10.00 am.

Page 5: LUTTERWORTH - u3asites.org.uk

Richard JAZZ GROUP Coordinator: Graham Ruff The group met for the first time since lock down on Tuesday 28th September. There were 6 members present although the total membership has increased to 16 over recent months. .Several people were otherwise engaged this month. With this number it is essential that notice of attendance is given to the host at least 2 days in advance. Some homes will have difficulty accommodating the whole group. We will discuss this and see if we may need to restrict numbers on a first come basis at certain venues. We listened to a variety of artists including many singers this afternoon among them were Sarah Vaughan, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, Billy Holiday, Georgia Mancio and Louis Armstrong. We also listened to The Dutch Swing College, Tubby Hayes, Chris Barber, Miles Davis and the Friends Of New Orleans. We will met next month at Geoff Dean's home in Ashby Parva on Tuesday 26th of October at 2.00pm.Members please let Geoff know in good time if you will be coming. Any new members wishing for information about the group should make contact with me via the Group coordinator or the Membership secretary whose details are on the Lutterworth U3A website contact page. Graham Ruff LINE DANCING Co-ordinator: Carole Harrington We shall be meeting on 12th and 26th October in the Community Room at the Wycliffe Rooms from 2.30pm to 4pm. Looking forward to seeing you there. Carole BRIDGE Coordinator: Kathy Scott-Simons Bridge Group meets each Friday at June Hartopp's home at 2 pm to play. If members need to know the address, they should contact Linda Patton via the website.

Kathy BIRD WATCHING GROUP Co-ordinator: Ann Fletcher Our September outing was to our ‘home’ ground of Brandon Nature Reserve and it proved to be a very enjoyable restarting of our bird watching. This is a quiet time of year for birding as many Summer visitors have gone and the Winter immigrants have not yet arrived. Also, many of the birds are juveniles and have plumage which makes them more difficult to identify. Nevertheless, after a slow start we managed to spot a respectable number of 26 species. The best sighting was of a juvenile water rail, walking and feeding in open shallow water (see photo). Another highlight was watching a kingfisher flitting back and forth and fishing. As we also always take note of the accompanying flora and fauna during our strolling, we were treated on this visit to the exciting view of an otter swimming next to our coffee-break hide. All in all, a great day out. Our next outing will be on Friday 22 October, meeting at 9.30 on the Lutterworth Recreation Ground car park with pack-up as usual.

Derek Deacon SCRABBLE Co-ordinator: Glenys Peverley Welcome back to face to face Scrabble! Lovely to see two new members, Margaret and Megan. Linda must have been spending all lockdown practising as she scored a phenomenal 401 in her first game and won her second. Well done Linda. On October 20th we will be at Brenda's; on November 17th at

Page 6: LUTTERWORTH - u3asites.org.uk

Jennie's and on December 15th at Linda's. Meetings start at 2:30pm. Glenys TABLE TENNIS Co-ordinator: Carole Harrington We would like some new members for this group. It does not matter if you have not played for some time, come and try it! We meet every Monday (except Bank Holidays) together with Wycliffe U3A from 2pm to 4pm at Walcote Village Hall. This is a very good venue and we have 3 table tennis tables so you will have plenty of exercise! Carole READING GROUP Co-ordinator: Linda Patton The September Reading Group was led by Sue for which I was very grateful. I had really wanted to attend this meeting as Shuggie Bain gave us all plenty to discuss. Here is Sue's report: At the beginning of our meetings we usually ask the question ‘did you enjoy the book?’ For our book this month, Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart, this did not seem the appropriate question. Set in the 1980’s in post-industrial Glasgow, unemployment was the norm and the book deals with difficult issues, poverty, deprivation and alcoholism to name but a few. We explored Douglas Stuart’s own life and discovered it closely resembled that of the young boy and chief character of the book, Shuggie Bain. However, the book is really about love in seemingly impossible circumstances for it to survive, but it does. We felt that the book was grim, often touchingly sad but was a truly worthwhile read. By the time you read this report, we shall have had our October meeting, a report on this will be in the next newsletter but if you wish to join us at the November meeting in Bitteswell Village Hall at 10 am on the first Tuesday, the book that we shall be discussing is "The Shipping News" by Annie Proulx.

ART APPRECIATION GROUP Coordinators: Rae Flowerday Sue Woodhead We had our very first meeting after lock down on 2nd September, looking at and discussing, why we had never heard of Siegfried Bing. The instigator of the Art Nouveau Movement. From his beginnings in a French ceramics factory to the culmination of his career at the 1900 Paris World Exhibition. For different reasons our numbers are low. If anyone is interested in Art and Artists, come and join our get togethers each month. Next meeting will be on Thursday 7th October looking at "Bruegal and Northern Renaissance" Apologies to Glenys. Rae Flowerday. QUIZ GROUP Co-ordinator Sue Jones The September quiz afternoon was cancelled. Glenys will now host the October meeting. I have also cancelled the December meeting as it falls on the same day as the outing to Nottingham Castle. If you think you may like to join this group please contact me. HISTORY GROUP Co-ordinator: Linda Patton It was lovely to see several new members at our History Group meeting where we discussed Oliver Cromwell and King Charles II. There was plenty to discuss about the Merry Monarch and his many mistresses and illegitimate children, two of whom are direct ancestors of Princess Diana meaning that when Prince William takes the throne, he will be the first monarch who can trace his ancestry back to King Charles II. We learnt a little about his wet-nurse which surprised us! Next month we shall discuss King James II, William and Mary and Queen Anne and we

Page 7: LUTTERWORTH - u3asites.org.uk

look forward to you joining us if you think that you would find this interesting. Linda PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP Coordinator: Alan Shean

Our September meeting was blessed with good weather for photography which we spent on the Leicester Arm of the Grand Union Canal. The weir is always a good place for taking pictures and we were pleased to find a cormorant posing on a protective buoy. The heron on the far bank was probably unaware of Mick creeping through the undergrowth to line up a good shot. A few images from our session are attached but are better seen in colour on the online version of the newsletter and in greater number.

After the ongoing covid problems it was a delight to be able to enjoy our small gathering of lively folks, ready to chat about the good things in life. The meal was excellent and it was great to sit around enjoying good company again. Ann & Andy. Oh what a lovely surprise, the sun came out for us to enjoy being out in the garden of Gwenda and John for our supper group night in September. We sat outside until 9.30 only coming inside for the last hour or so. The food, as always, was excellent and the conversation was nothing short of hilarious at times. What a great way to restart the Supper Group evenings again. The November supper hosts are Lynda and Alan and Sheila and Tony. Please let your chosen host know what you are taking and please be there by 6.45pm. Gwenda NEW AGE KURLING GROUP Coordinator: Roy Maiden Well, we have had 2 sessions in September with a very good turnout on both occasions, together with some new members joining in for

the first time. The venue at the Ullesthorpe Village Hall has seen some improvements both inside and out so please come along and see for yourselves and if your curiosity is wandering what on earth is New Age Kurling, pop along and see for yourself on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday afternoon of each Month. We obviously have to hire the hall so a small charge of £2 is accepted for an afternoon (2.00pm til 4.00pm) fun and chatter. We cater for seniors with abilities and disabiities no one is turned away. Tea and coffee is available and sometimes biscuits (if Roy doesn’t get there first lol). Hope to see you there. Roy and Barbara CANASTA Coordinator: June Hartopp Canasta Group meet on 1st Friday of the month and 3rd Wednesday of the month 10-12 midday. Please contact June if you would like to join this group SHORT WALKS GROUP Co-ordinators: Lyn Foxwell and Fay Goodwin I can't say that this month's outing really qualified as a short walk as we had decided that with the problem in obtaining fuel, we should limit our walk to Lutterworth. Although we saw some buildings we had never known about before and heard Fay's anecdotes about them, I cannot say truthfully that the outing could be described as anything but a meander. We shall., however, meet again at 10 am next month when, hopefully, the fuel problems will have eased and try once again our walk planned for September. All are welcome to join this friendly group. STROLLING GROUPS ONE AND TWO Group One Coordinator: Gwenda Jones Group Two Coordinator: John Lee STROLLING GROUP ONE On a lovely autumn day we visited the Northamptonshire village of Braybrooke meeting at the grade 2* listed Church of All Saints, which although not the prettiest Church

we had visited, as some alterations were taking place, but one with a lot of history. We heard about the Latimer family who lived in Braybrooke Castle and I am sure that if any one of us hears the name ‘Isobel’ again we will come out in goose bumps. We dined at the Swan Inn in the village, Where, although the menu was a little restricted, we had an excellent lunch with very animated conversation. An excellent day out to make us forget Covid. On October 19th we will be visiting Gilmorton village and eating at The Shires Inn in Peatling Parva. We will meet at the recreation ground at 10.45. Gwenda STROLLING GROUP TWO What a wonderful day. The sun was out and 25 of us strolled down towards the church in Gilmorton and formed a semicircle to be entertained with a talk and demonstration by a falconer. After the talk we went into the church and had another excellent talk given by Alan Shean on the stained-glass windows. After the talk we came out and located the Motte and Bailey in an adjoining field but only a few ventured inside the field as notices warned us of the cows kept there. We strolled back to the car park and went on to the Shires Inn in Peatling Parva to have an excellent lunch with a relaxed company of Covid Free u3a friends.....a wonderful day.. Walk Report Shilton. September 1st 2021

I was due to have Hernia surgery at short

notice on the Walk date and it is with much

applause and sincere grateful thanks that

Trevor and Pauline Stott took over with the

great style of “the show must go on, AKA

Queen”. I'm sure you all will be in debt to them

both.

The weather was fine and warm on the day

and Your Leaders performed the task brilliantly.

That surely means that they deserve a glass,

it's just a case of who is to pay? I'm sure all

our loyal patrons will fall over each other to

finance the deal, if not you may need a

volunteer.

The quality of the food was outstanding. I did

manage that. Quite a story with no surgery.

An interesting walk including very long

aqueducts and high arched Railway bridges

and a stroll, with the Canal as company.

See you all on the Wednesday 3rd November

2021.

FOURTH WEDNESDAY WALKING GROUP Co-ordinators: Sue and Peter Creeden

September 2021 Walk Report This was my first U3a walk for a long time so it was great to arrive at the Bell Inn in Gumley to see all the usual smiling faces that I had missed. There were 20 of us who set off up Main Street on a beautiful sunny morning being led by Pete Williamson with Jean following up at the rear. This felt very wrong, Pete was always at the rear closing all the gates. As we set off into the woods we had to be to be halted to wait for two late comers to catch up. We then took the lane to Laughton. It was supposed to be quiet but nobody had told the motorists! The route then took field tracks to the canal where we stopped for a break. We then continued along the peaceful and tranquil tow-path until we reached a road bridge where we left the canal to follow the lanes to head back towards Gumley. We could see the tower of Gumley Hall in the distance but to reach it we had to cross several fields and climb a testing hill, for some, to reach an alleyway back into Main Street. A very enjoyable walk. This is a lovely part of Leicestershire with interesting

Page 11: LUTTERWORTH - u3asites.org.uk

villages and beautiful scenery with stunning views. Thank you Jean and Pete. Peter Creeden Next walk - Wednesday 27 October 2021 Walk Organiser:- Stephen Carter Meeting Point and Time:-. Lutterworth Recreation Ground Car Park at 09.10am to leave at 09.20 am. Start Point and Time:- The Village Hall,

Wilkinson Lane, Elmesthorpe LE9 7SP. Depart

at 10:00am.

Directions to the Starting Point:- There are

several ways to get to Elmesthorpe. The

easiest is through Bitteswell, Ashby Parva and

Frolesworth to turn right onto the B4114. Then

turn third left (the Mill on the Soar is to your

right) onto the B581, through Stoney Stanton to

Elmesthorpe. The village hall is signed at the

far end of the village to the right. Distance from

Lutterworth 12 miles.

Route and Distance: Starting at the village

hall we initially walk back through the village

along the B road (which has a pavement but

can be busy) along a country lane and through

open farmland to reach Burbage woods. Then

through the woods, along field edges, under

the railway and across Burbage Common to

the Coffee Shop (toilet available). We return via

a minor road and Bridleway. The walk contains

a mix of country lanes, tracks, forest trails and

open farmland. Length of walk 5.3 miles, no
