Broughton Astley W.I.Brenda Lincoln, accompanied by her husbandDavid, came along to tell us about the quilts shemakes for the severely injured service personnelwho are being treated at the Joint ServicesRehabilitation Centre at Hedley Court in Surrey.

She had made a batch of traditional quilts usingbrightly coloured squares of material and asked if shemight visit to see if anyone would like one. Her ideawas accepted and she was surprised to find that theywere snapped up very quickly. Soon she was asked,“Do you do letters?” Well of course she does and shenow personalises each quilt for the recipient to showtheir regimental badge, name, rank and number. Thebackground material may be the union flag in red,white and blue or a muted camouflage design or thecolours used by the regiment. Brenda showed usseveral examples of her quilts which were reallyamazing and told some stories of the courage anddetermination of these brave soldiers, which weretruly inspirational.

The recent outing to Adam Henson’s Cotswoldsfarm was very interesting and enjoyed by all, as wasour summer party to celebrate the 85th Anniversaryof the formation of Broughton Astley WI. Plans areunderway to visit Trentham Gardens, Staffordshire inSeptember and a performance of ‘Singing in the Rain’at the Concordia Theatre in November.

SUMMER DRIVING TIPSThe holiday season can mean high temperatures, whether it’s the dailycommute or a long journey to a holiday retreat. Driving in the summer hasits challenges so take a look at these summer driving tips to help keep yousafe and moving.

• Lost Key Fobs It's easy to lose your car keys in the sand or ruin your remotecontrol with water by accidentally taking the fob for a swim. Keep your keyssafe and dry and check your handbook. On most cars, there's an alternativeway to open the doors that you can use if your remote stops working.

• Punctures If your tyres are already damaged or they're at the wrongpressure, the higher temperatures of summer will increase the risk of ablowout. Make sure you check your tyres regularly for condition andpressures. Increase pressures to suit extra loads as advised in your handbook.Don’t forget, that if you’re towing to check caravan / trailer tyres too andreplace those that show any signs of cracking in the sidewall or tread grooves.

• Overheating High temperatures can aggravate cooling system problemstoo. It’s important to check the coolant and cooling system regularly to avoidoverheating. Check your coolant reservoir, look for wet or white marks oncoolant hoses and listen for the fan when your engine is at idle. If you thinkanything’s amiss, have it looked at ASAP.

• Glare or dazzle from the sun causes lots of accidents but you can reducethe effect by keeping your windscreen nice and clean. Leave a good distancebetween you and the vehicle in front and by replacing worn or damagedwindscreen wipers. It pays to keep a clean pair of sunglasses in your car yearround but avoid lenses that darken in strong sunlight.

• Stress/Tiredness If you feel tired, stop and take a short nap (up to 15minutes) or drink two cups of strong coffee. It’s best to avoid getting tired inthe first place if you can. Factor in a 20-minute break in journeys of more than3 hours. On longer trips, take a break every couple of hours. Don’t drinkalcohol or eat a heavy meal before driving and don’t stop for a nap on the hardshoulder. Make sure you check parking restrictions before putting your headdown at a motorway service area as you could get a ticket for overstaying yourwelcome.

• Hay Fever If your hay fever is particularly bad, it’s best to get someone elseto drive if you can. However if you choose to drive yourself, make sure anymedication you’re taking doesn't cause drowsiness. Close windows and airvents to reduce pollen grains in the car. Clean mats and carpets regularly toget rid of dust. Keep tissues close to hand and wear sunglasses to block outbright sunlight. Slow down and drop back if you feel you're about to sneeze –at 70mph you’ll lose vision for up to 100m

• Loose Chippings Roads repaired with tar and loose chippings are acommon sight in the summer but they can cause cracked headlamps andwindscreens and damage paintwork if you’re not careful. Stick to anytemporary speed limit that’s been put in place and keep your distance from thecar in front.

Leicestershire SpeakersIn What Direction does the Eiffel Tower Expand?Our July meeting opened with Margaret Barrett reading ‘The Speech’ by Joyce Grenfell. One couldalmost imagine Margaret had been ‘morphed’ into Joyce Grenfell with her reading.Summer was the title of Hiten Vyas’ speech, based on vocabulary. Whilst talking about summer Hiten

took us across the channel to the Eiffel Tower and informed that it actually expands 17cm. From theaudience’s faces it was apparent they were imagining the dimension and plane of the expansion!!Wyn Glen always speaks so eloquently and she entertained us with anecdotes about the battles her late

husband had with the lawn mower. Wyn told us how she refused to let the garden daunt her and approachthe tasks in hand with stoicism.Topics (impromptu short speeches) for July were led by Mark Glover and as usual these led to some very

interesting views and ideas when the speaker was challenged to talk about the value of an object or thing.One example the Loch Ness Monsters, another diamonds.Leicestershire Speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in public. Our

Hinckley BID’s 6th Annual Classic Motorshow is aFun Day out for all The FamilyOn Sunday September 18th, around 500 Classicvehicle owners from all over the Midlands are onceagain expected to fill Hinckley Town Centre to showoff their beautiful and carefully restored machinesand to compete for a variety of Trophies.

A great poem, called The Spelling Chequer,follows (with grateful thanks to its anonymousauthor) that I hope reminds you that, even withvery sophisticated computer technology, it’svery easy to believe that because ‘thecomputer’ validates something as ‘correct’ itdoesn’t necessarily mean it is! It’s accuracy isonly as good as the design of the programmeand the computer industry has an expressionfor how good that might be: GIGO... GarbageIn, Garbage Out!

The human mind is often referred to as ‘themost powerful computer on the planet’ and,after many years of on-going ‘programming’you may wonder why you keep acting upon‘instructions’ that individually appear to makesense but, when they all come together (as inthe poem), they make no sense (or evennonsense!) at all.

FEETSo why do youneed to see me?Feet are funny old things. They sit at the bottom of yourbody, carry you throughout the years, the miles, theshoes you regretted buying because they fitted in theshop.

The verrucas you had at school, the corn pad thatnever worked, but despite all those years of pain youwalked by the sign that said chiropodist/podiatrist, feethurting come on in. Yet you hobbled past. Question?When did you last see your old man’s feet? The lasttwo weeks before the school holidays. I have beeninundated with calls from wives who have lived withtheir other halves for many years and suddenlydiscovered their spouses have the most disgusting feetever to sit on the sun bed of the hotel Solano.

Last month I had a patient who makes regularappointments and no longer has any problemsbecause we (as a team) have made her feet look andfeel good 365 days a year. After the appointment shesaid could you spare a minute to have a look at my oldman’s feet as he is always complaining his feet hurtand we’re going on holiday soon. WELL? How thisbloke ever walked ten yards without pain defies logic.

Now the funny thing is, I decided to call his wife in toexplain why. His dear wife looked at his feet with utterdisgust. Now here’s the question! How come afteryears of togetherness did she never see her old man’sfeet? Her response, just sort those horrible thingsplease otherwise the holiday’s cancelled.

Being a stubborn old git, he was quite happy to ‘do’ hisown feet and was only here to stop ‘er indoors’nagging as she didn’t understand my pain. Aftersorting out two thick ingrowing toenails, 4 corns, twoinches of cracked heels, chronic athletes foot and hugecalluses all over his feet, guess what he said? I wish Ihad come here years ago. Now that is not a big up forme it’s a big up for podiatrists who get great jobsatisfaction when a stubborn old git like your old mansays “thank you I’ll be back”! That’s what we do. Footpain, discomfort, make good, feel good. Maybe that’swhy you need to see the advert below.

These days, we use our computers formany things, from searching theinternet, emailing as well as placingorders online or even internet banking.Unfortunately there are threats to ourcomputers (and bank balances) tooand we need to be constantly on ourguard.

The fact is that if you are on the internetyou cannot be 100% safe. Having saidthat, you can minimise any risk. Your firstline of defence is a good antivirusprogram – preferably not a free version asthey do not cover all the things that paidversions do. This should run in thebackground and hopefully catch mostthings that get through.

The next thing to be aware of is to bevery careful what you click on, whenviewing a website. There are many waysthat unscrupulous people can get you todownload something malicious and it’sup to us to be careful what we allow intoour computers.

Similarly, do not think that every emailfrom people that you know, are safe.Many viruses send emails to people inyour email Contacts, knowing that peopleare likely to open them without thinking.Look at the subject of the email – does itmake sense?

Lastly, if you get a phone call fromsomeone, whatever you do, do not letthem get access to your computer. No-one can say that your computer isinfected – it’s a scam to get money fromyou, so just put the phone down. Theymay sound genuine, but they are not.

All we need to do is just exercisecommon sense – and be wary.

LUTTERWORTH EMBROIDERERS’ GUILDAmanda Hislop speaks to The Guild on August 25th. Her talk called ‘Land Lines and DrawnLines’ tells how she uses drawing from observation to translate into stitched paper and textilepieces. Blaby BowlsSadly 2 of our most distinguished and longserving male members have passed away.Firstly Cliff Burrows who joined Blaby in 1970and had been President 3 times and ClubChampion passed away. Not only was Cliff veryactive until quite recently coaching and playingat Blaby but indoor he played at Slater Street aswell as coached. He represented Leicestershirein the Middleton Cup. He will be a big loss tofamily and friends. Secondly we lost Barry Wetherill after a long

and brave fight with illness. He follows his latewife Gill who also died recently. Joining Blaby in1980 he was a top rate clubman. He wasinstrumental in bringing a lot of players to us,including yours truly. He also enjoyed the indoorscene at Carlton Enderby. A sad loss but willalways be remembered.

We are now in the 2nd half of the outdoorseason and still have plenty to play for. On the county scene Jonny Lynch has reached

the singles finals and represents Leicestershire atLeamington in August. Unfortunately Tom Renshaw lost in the

quarters. We are still doing very nicely in boththe Top Club and the Club Double rink but lostin the quarters of the unbadged to Goodwood. Monday Hinckley Triples league 1 see us 3rd

behind Ibstock and 3rd in Div. 4 only 3 pointsbehind but we still have the top 2 teams to play. What a good job Manager Gordon Milner is

doing in his first season at the helm. In theTuesday South Leics Triples our B team are also3rd, again with the top two still to play. Finally in the Wednesday Leicester League

with one game left we need 4 points againstBirstall to clinch the title. Well done to new Manager Jonny Lynch.

Lutterworth Townswomens’ GuildAt the July meeting Charlotte Marston told members about the one and only Children’s AirAmbulance which is used solely for transporting very sick babies and children from one hospitalto another that has the facilities and expertise that child requires. The helicopter has two pilotsand carries a specialist team of doctors to wherever they are needed in the country, four timesfaster than going by road ambulance. Fundraising is on going to raise enough funds for a secondAir Ambulance as at the moment only one in three sick babies can be helped.There is no August meeting as members will be enjoying a skittles evening with supper. Taking place on Sunday 7th August it willbe Lutterworth’s first and very own FunDog Show! Lutterworth & District RoundTable is a charity organisation aiming toraise money for Medical Detection Dogs. Owners and their dogs (of all abilities) will

be able to come along on the day of the eventto compete or observe in categories such asmost handsome dog, best sausage catcher,best rescue and many more. The dogs that get on the podium will be

carefully selected by an experienced andqualified dog behaviourist IMDT Judge whois awarding the winners with bags packedwith goodies and a rosette. On the day there will also be stalls, games

and competitions to keep everyoneentertained. Registration is from 12.30pmand it’s just £1.50 entry per category.Categories are: prettiest bitch, handsome

Whittle RoundaboutThe replica of the jet engined aircraft on the Whittle roundabout is 13 years old this year. Itwas unveiled by Ian Whittle, Sir Frank’s son on 18th May 2003. Since that time it has withstoodsome of the hottest, coldest, wettest & windiest weather on record and still stands as a tributeto the work of Sir Frank Whittle and also the very important part played by Lutterworth in thedevelopment of the jet engine. However, even Frank Whittle would not have been able to holdback the ravages of extreme weather indefinitely and although the Whittle Trust has madeannual inspections and ‘touch ups’ over the years, it became clear last year that the time hadcome for some serious TLC. The only other option would have been to take the aircraft down. A questionnaire campaign launched last autumn showed overwhelming support amongst

Lutterworth people for keeping the iconic roundabout and so, The Whittle Trust, who isresponsible for the maintenance, approached Harborough District Council with a view to fundingthe work. In parallel with this, the Trust financed the commissioning of an independent structuralsurvey to establish the integrity of the structure, the results showing it was safe with no significantdefects. After much discussion HDC very generously made a grant available which covered muchof the cost involved in giving the aircraft its much needed new coat of paint. The Whittle Trust is also very appreciative of the generous help given by local and other

businesses, namely a donation from IDI Gazeley.Also our thanks to local firm STL Scaffolding Services of Ashby Magna for providing the

expertise and erecting the scaffolding.Roundabouts are not the easiest of locations to work on. No.1 priority being to cause as little

interruption to normal traffic flow as possible. Traffic management was a large factor to beconsidered and in this we were enormouslygrateful to Scanska (the large internationalcompany currently building the M1/M6Junction 19), who undertook the trafficmanagement task at no cost to us.The preparation and painting was done

by a Nottinghamshire based companycalled, by pure coincidence, WhittleProgrammed Painting.The work was completed by the end of

July and we hope that you are pleased withthe result and hope the work did notinconvenience you too much.The Whittle Trust

Action Medical Research forchildren Lutterworth committee is pleased toreport that the Strawberry Teas on June 29thraised £2,125.

Thanks to everyone for their support, it was a marvellous result the best ever.Thanks to Geoff Cave who had his home turned into a strawberry factory and tookorders and thank you to our helpers, many starting work at 7.30am. Also the driversand their helpers; it was the wettest strawberry tea in 28 years, (they had to getchanged during the day), without such a wonderful band of assistants the day wouldnot take place. To all the schools, factories, offices and shops who supported usbuying the teas, a big thank you, we hope you all enjoyed them. Thanks to Alex Toonfrom Frutas and Morrisons for their support. Royal Garden PartyElaine and George Turner were invited to be guestsof Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace fora Royal Garden Party on 19th May.For Elaine the day was a ‘dream come true’. They

were able to stroll around the beautiful gardens whilstlistening to the bands and ate the traditional crustlesscucumber sandwiches, dainty fancy cakes and lots ofice cream.The invitation was in recognition of over 50 years

of fund raising and community service with local charities includingriding for the disabled and Macmillan Cancer Support which benefitedfrom over £5,000 raised through plant stalls and other activities withfamily and friends.George and Elaine mentored students at The Enterprise Centre in

Lutterworth who found conventional schooling challenging butresponded well to studying horticulture and the practical side of growingplants, vegetables and flowers. Their students have progressed to theBrooksby Agricultural College, the National Forestry Commission andto coaching disabled sports.Following a simple request for people to knit teddy bears for poor and

ill children in the third world, Rotarian Elaine has been overwhelmed bythe response with over 5,700 teddies already sent to 45 countries.As a surprise Elaine and George’s family arranged taxi transport to

and from the garden party and breakfast at Kensington Palace orangery.As an extra surprise the Lutterworth Rotary Club appointed George anhonorary member.

Upper back pain? The Thoracic SpineThe thoracic spine consists of 12 vertebrae between the neckand lower back to which the ribs attach. This area can be proneto pain and injury but is frequently overlooked or misdiagnosed.Pain from this area can be felt between the shoulder blades,often as a ‘burning’ sensation and it may radiate into the chest,armpit, shoulder or down the arm. The arm may feel heavy andthere could be tingling or pins and needles in the hand. Pain canbe aggravated by deep breathing, coughing, twisting, overreaching or prolonged sitting (usually in a slouched position).Being heavy busted or having osteoporosis may aggravate painsin the thoracic spine. A ‘dowager’s hump’ may develop at the top of the thoracicspine. This may be associated with neck pain and headaches butcan be eased with physiotherapy treatment and special exercisesthat improve your posture and strengthen the muscles that holdyour neck up. Frequently people complain that their head feelstoo heavy to support; physiotherapy can help.Golfers need full mobility of the thoracic spine. If it is stiff andcannot twist properly the back swing is too steep leading to anincreased likelihood of creating divots and putting excessivestrain on the lower back. All of these symptoms can be assessed and successfully treatedby a Chartered Physiotherapist (privately there is no need for adoctor’s referral). She can tailor treatment methods to yourindividual problems and give you all relevant advice to preventthe problems recurring in the future.

Friends in France15 members of Lutterworth Twinning Associationwere welcomed by the residents of Chambourcyour twin town. Known as Chambouricians, ourhosts gave us great hospitality and were as keen topractice their English as we were reluctant tostruggle on with our (mostly) rocky French.

We joined in the celebrations of the Summer Fêteand enjoyed BBQs, concerts, delicious French food,local visits and a spectacular firework display. It isalways interesting to experience another culture andmaybe, during this period of Brexit and immigrationconcerns it is even more important to cherish anddevelop international friendships and understanding.

We have established links between LutterworthHigh School and the Collége André Derain inChambourcy with the aim of supporting students inlearning Foreign Languages. Some local PrimarySchools have also made links with their counterpartsin Chambourcy.

A group of local Folk Musicians came with us andplayed in two concer ts, we hope that Frenchmusicians will visit Lutterworth later this year.

In the words of one of our members, "Visits likethis have wider implications particularly at a time ofpolitical uncertainty and when some of our friendsoutside the UK might think that we are turning ourback on Europe... there is no doubt that the personallinks established by these exchanges do, in their ownsmall way, help to establish a friendlier, kinder world”.

organised by Lynn Wood and Dorothy Jones withhelp from other exhibitors will run from Thursday18th- Saturday 20th from 10am - 5pm at the UnitedReformed Church in George Street. 40 very talentedlocal artists and 15 craftsmen and women will beexhibiting their work, some of which will be for sale.Paintings of various subjects in different mediumswill be exhibited along with a wide variety ofcraftwork from ceramics to miniaturist display andhand-painted silk scarves to leather craft and muchmore.During the exhibition a local guitar maker will be

showing and demonstrating his latest instrument.There will also be a display of handmade articles (forcharity) from the Lutterworth Knit & Stitch Groupand a display of articles made by students from theEnterprise Centre.

Visitors can choose their favourite painting forthe ‘Best in Show’ competition and refreshments willbe available during the exhibition.3 - The Lutterworth Photographic Society’s

Exhibition will be at the Methodist Church Hall,(Coventry Road entrance) on Friday evening the19th (6 - 9pm) and all day Saturday (10am - 5pm).Both colour and monochrome prints will beexhibited, plus a continuous presentation ofprojected images. Three trophies will be awarded -for the best print, the best projected image and thebest panel of small prints on this year’s chosentheme, ‘Stately Homes’.Members of the public will also be asked to vote

for the prints they like best. Prints from other localphotographic societies will also be on display. Eachof these panels of prints will be assessed by theLutterworth Society President who will choose thewinner of the 2016 ‘President’s Trophy’ award.Lutterworth is very fortunate to have such a

Lutterworth U3A - Songsters30 enthusiastic singers are seeking someone toreplace their retiring leader Terry Pawley, who hasably led the group since its inception 7 years ago.This is the ‘Singing for Fun’ group of LutterworthU3A usually called the ‘Songsters’.

The group meets on the 1st & 3rd Mondaymornings of each month in Bitteswell Church.Although we sing for fun, there is a significantelement of learning and songs are sung from musicscores. We sing a wide variety of songs and haveamassed over 100 songs in our repertoire since westarted. They include songs from Musical Shows,Film Scores, Big Band Era, Music Hall, Gilbert &Sullivan, Country & Western, etc. Although we singfor our own enjoyment, we do perform occasionallyfor the whole Lutterworth U3A membership.

The new leader should be familiar with musicscores and be able to encourage improvements inour renditions. The group is open to new ideas andchallenges and is very sociable. We have anaccompanist and the leader would have plenty ofsupport from other group members as required.

The U3A is for retired or semi-retired people andLutterworth U3A has over 300 members who wishto socialise and learn within the various interestgroups. The new leader may be a member at adifferent U3A or a person who wishes to join thisvery friendly organisation.

Ullesthorpe Open Gardenson 26th June was most successful. There were20 gardens open to the public between 11amand 5pm all varied in both size, maturity andcontent and visitors voted for their favourite. The winning garden was Carinya in Hall Lane

(Angela and Mick Nore), with Maldon Cottage inManor Road (Yvonne and Michael Foster) andJatinga in College Street (Mary and Eric Adams)in equal second place.Total proceeds raised on the day amounted to

over £2,300. The plant sale at Carinya raised £500and proceeds were shared between theAlzheimers Society and BLOODWISE. Tombolain the Village Hall raised £140 for the villageEvergreens and book sales at Marldon Cottageraised £64 for Loros. The programme sales andVillage Hall refreshments raised £1,645 whichwas divided amongst local organisations: VillageHall refurbishing fund (£500), Evergreens (£345),Ullesthorpe Congregational Church (£200), St Peter's Parish Church (£200), UllesthorpePrimary School (£150), Playing Field (£150) andPilots (£100).The weather was kind on the day with the ice

cream selling out at Jelley's Orchard and no cakewas left at the Village Hall!Barbara Pugh and her helpers would like to

thank all who opened their gardens, the ChequersInn for car parking, all who helped on the day inthe provision of food and organisation and allwho came along to make the event such a success.

Wycliffe Lutterworth U3AHow to be a Great Leader

Richard Hill spoke with authority and passionfor this fascinating subject. He began byposing the question ‘What is leadership?’There were many diverse ideas amongst theaudience. Richard suggested that leadership is creating

an environment in which others can succeed,bringing change within a group. The groupjourney from point A to point B could havemany barriers, such as the scope, readiness orcapabilities. He touched on leadership withinsport, where complementary skills are vital inteam building. Coaching, acknowledgingstrengths and weaknesses should be by designnot accident, with a clear focus and thoroughpreparation. Leaders in business politics or thetheatre world need the trust of energetic teams,who are passionate and innovative. Success willfollow if goals are set, reality is considered,options are discussed and bold decisions onwhat needs to be done are made. Good leadersshould always make a difference.Thank you Richard for leading us through

Lutterworth & Villages Foodbank celebrated our 2nd Anniversary in January, also saying goodbye and thank you to Lynn and Paul Martinwho stepped down as Project Manager and Warehouse Supervisor (see photo). We welcomed John Warrenback as Chair and thank him for his renewed commitment. We have worked with over 30 local agencies, providing over 2,500 adult meals and over 1,400 child meals

since January. Over 5,000kg of food, toiletries and household items have gone to people in crisis in ourcommunity.Our dedicated, trained volunteers greet clients and chat over a hot drink, suggesting local agencies that could

help. An experienced volunteer says, “Having been a volunteer here for virtually since it started, I can honestlysay that I have found it both rewarding and enjoyable to such an extent I found myself also spending time inour ever busy warehouse! It is not a challenge just something I'm more than happy to do. Helping people inneed is something we all choose to do without the need for praise or recognition”.Thank you to everybody who volunteers, donates or hosts a collection bin and everyone who tells people in

Ullesthorpe W.I.The talk at the July meeting was “Nursing in Afghanistan” given byErica Perkins. Erica has been the Critical Care Unit Manager atQueen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and formerly worked atSelly Oak Hospital before it combined with the Q.E. She has receivedour wounded military personnel as the unit is the Royal Centre forDefence Medicine chosen because it can deal with every speciality, isonly 15 minutes from Birmingham Airport and is a UniversityHospital. Erica was approached by the MOD in 2009 to nurse in Afghanistan

for 4 months at Camp Bastion. The accommodation was tents, the bedswere canvas camp beds protected by mosquito nets, but there were hotshowers and flushing toilets. All equipment had to be of a portablenature. With temperatures approaching 50C, drinking water was ofutmost importance, provided from bore holes and purified on site.When Erica first arrived to look after the Intensive Care Unit, there

were only 4 beds which soon increased to 10. There was no piped

oxygen or piped suction and many ‘essentials’ were missing. Shiftswere 12 hours in length with no days off and followed a pattern of twolong days, one night shift and then a sleep day. Medical staff werealways on call.The aim following admission was to clean the wounds, stop the

bleeding and prepare for the journey back to Birmingham within 24hours. The beds had to be kept as empty as possible because of thefuture unknown need. The RAF Critical Care Transport team weremeticulous over their care for patients as were the Medical EmergencyResponse Team when sent out to retrieve casualities in Chinookhelicopters.Prince Charles and his sons visited which served as morale boosters

for the staff and patients. Erica was awarded a medal for her service.Stella Tilley won the competition and Kit Jacklin won the rafflle.On August 11th at 1.45pm in the Memorial Hall, the speaker will be

The weatherwas not good & we did not have as many visitorsas we would have liked & as we are used to havingat our fairs. However our stallholders seemedvery happy so those who came must have enjoyedthe fabulous hand crafted jewellery, lovely cards& hand crafted sticks. There was a crystal healer& life coach, a stall promoting the healthy eatingof vegetables & fruit, lovely fascinators, bags &scarves & many more delights. Our next fair will be the Christmas event on

November 12th & this year we shall be holdinganother on Light Switch-on Night on the evening of November 25th, both at the Wycliffe Rooms. This is agreat venue, right in the middle of the town and we are very lucky to be there for these events.On Saturday September 3rd Lutterworth & District Museum will commemorate 50 years since the

closure of the Great Central Railway and of Lutterworth Station. For those new residents who may notrealise that Lutterworth ever had a station, take a walk to the very bottom of Station Road. There they willsee a blue-brick railway bridge & if they walk under that bridge & look to the left there they will see abricked-up doorway. It used to lead to the steps that you had to climb to reach the platform. Lutterworthwas an important stopping-place on the most beautifully engineered railway line ever built in Britain. TheGCR, which ran from Marylebone, London to Manchester, was the last main line to be built in the country.It opened in 1899 & was closed under government instructions in 1966.At the Museum, in the One Stop Shop, Gilmorton Road there will be a big display of working model

railways of all types plus talks & films. Also on show will be a special exhibit, a new-build Victorian 4-4-0GCR express loco, no. 567. On Sunday September 4th, the Museum has organised a Commemoration Tour. Coaches will leave the

One Stop Shop at 10am, their passengers bound for Loughborough Central Station & a ride on one of theGCR’s Special Commemoration Trains. Claybrooke Parva Church AnnualFête & Strawberry Cream Tea

After a grey start to Sunday 5th June, the sun brokethrough to give a glorious, warm afternoon. Thestrawberry cream teas were a great success and thevarious stalls were busy. Besides several activities forthe children, the stalls included face painting, whiteelephant, plants, jams and preserves, two differenttombolas, cakes, guess the names of the lambs andtheir combined weight, books, crafts, win a £20 noteand jewellery. The fancy dress competition of Kingsand Queens only produced Kings!

The Grand Prize Draw took place at the end of theafternoon. The first two prizes were cash (£100 & £50)and the remaining 15 prizes were donated by localbusinesses. Thanks to all of the firms for theirgenerosity. The raffle made a profit of £979.

The total raised including the raffle was £2,186.21which will boost the Church Funds. The SocialCommittee wishes to thank all who helped on the day, allwho provided goods and tombola prizes and everyonewho came along to support the Annual Fête.

AND LIMEGinger and lime are two traditonal Caribbeaningredients, add these to some fresh tuna and it is easy yet delicious on the bbq.When you mention tuna people think tins withsweetcorn. Fresh tuna steaks on a bbq is perfect astuna is an oily fish so remains moist while cookingon the bbq, acharcoal bbq givesthe fish a nicerflavour than a gasbbq.

INGREDIENTS: 6 tuna steaks, 8 oz each3 garlic cloves, crushed

1 tablespoon ginger, fresh, grated1 teaspoon sugar1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper flakes3 tablespoons fresh lime juice2 tablespoons soy sauce, low sodium1 tablespoon dark sesame oil

DIRECTIONS: Place steaks in a large shallow dish. Combine garlic and remaining ingredients in a small bowl;stir well. Pour marinade mixture over tunasteaks. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for1 hour, turning once.Remove steaks from the marinade, reservingmarinade. Bring marinade to the boil in a smallsaucepan.Grill tuna steaks, covered, over medium hot coalsor a gas bbq on high for about 20 minutes oruntil fish flakes easily. Baste often with marinade.Serve with fresh herbed green salad, new potatoes.

The LutterworthBig Bike RideLutterworth Rotary Club will be runningtheir 5th Big Bike Ride on Sunday 14thAugust. The event starts and finishes atMisterton Hall (LE17 4JP) and there will befour routes: 11, 23, 39 and 62 miles. Theentry fee is £10 for an adult and £5 forunder 12’s and will include a hog roast to beenjoyed at the finish.Last year the event attracted over 400 riders,

well over 100 of whom completed the 62 mileroute.The routes are selected to follow, as far as

possible, quieter country lanes in the beautifulsurroundings of rural Leicestershire andNorthamptonshire. The 39 mile route also has thedistinction of running directly through the NasebyBattlefield Site and many sections follow theNational Cycle Network.

Last year triathlon clubs erected their tents andflags on the lawn at Misterton to create a realevent atmosphereand all cycling clubsare welcome.The event is

organised by theLutterworth RotaryClub with the kindpermission of MrsHeather Craven, owner of Misterton Hall. Theylook forward to entries from individuals andfamilies and also from teams representing localbusinesses & clubs.Entry forms and more information is available

The Enterprise Centre in Lutterworth to become

IndependentThe Enterprise Centre in Lutterworth is a practicaleducation centre providing an outstandingalternative curriculum and high quality pastoralcare for students aged 9 – 18.

Building on a successful 12 years as an off-sitefacility for the Lutterworth College, the Centre isbecoming an independent charity and will nowprovide a service for all schools in Leicestershire,Warwickshire and Northamptonshire.

The Centre has specialist teachers in practicalareas including woodwork, pc maintenance, arts andcrafts, horticulture, hand care, cooking andwallpapering to prepare students for nationallyrecognised qualifications.

Ofsted reports have judged The Enterprise Centreas ‘outstanding’ and students who attend benefitgreatly from the high quality provision, making rapidprogress.

Students can attend for a single session, half day orfull day. Courses are also offered for adults andcommunity groups.

Lutterworth Town BandUnfortunately ‘Wind in the Woods’ event on the3rd July had to be cancelled due to lack ofsupport. The organisers and Band members weredisappointed but are keen to arrange analternative joint engagement later in the yeartowards the start of the Christmas season.The next Band engagements are:
