Foundation Portfolio - Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt

in the progression from it to the full product?

Done by Eman Shah

Looking back at my preliminary task, when I made my school based magazine, I have noticed that my Photoshop knowledge has expanded. I have learnt other techniques in Photoshop, that I did not know before, for example the drop shadow which allows you to add depth in a photo or an object which makes it stand out and look attractive, and also it makes it look presentable. I have learnt what the main tools are used for and some other techniques to make photographs attractive to lure people in. In my opinion I think it was better that I did my preliminary task before I did the main task which was my music magazine because it helped me develop my skills on Photoshop an also learning about convention and also semantics within magazines. My final media product is much more detailed in terms of layout and photographs. Looking back at my preliminary task it looked very basic, which made it look unprofessional. Whereas on my final product the layout and photographs were very different, as I researched a lot about the genre.

School Based Magazine Music Magazine

Above you can see my preliminary task which was the school based magazine on the left and on the right is the main task which is my music magazine. When I created my school based magazine I used basic tools on Photoshop. This was something that I made sure that I avoided when I created my music magazine. This is because by looking at my school based magazine it doesn’t seem to have any effects which stands out. Both of the magazines are targeted at a different audience so it was important that I changed the features of the effects, so that it is aimed at specific audience.

Above are my contents pages, the right one is for my school based magazine and the right one is for my music magazine which is the main task. I think that I made a massive improvement when I created my music magazine because , as you can see increases on a wide range of techniques. For example on the music magazine I burnt the edges of the models hair using the burn tool which I used to draw attention. My contents of my school based magazine looks very basic because there was not much of a design on there. When researching my music magazine I have gone much deeper in to it to gain more information in what goes in to a magazine and how genres of magazines look like.

This is my double page spread for my music magazine (main task). I creates it on Adobe Indesign CS6. I think that my knowledge of software has improved massively. I have learnt new skills and techniques that helped my magazine look very professional.
