Hello Bookham! I do hope you all enjoyed a peaceful Easter

break. It’s good to be enjoying these lighter evenings and feeling a little more summery, isn’t it?

This month, I share a wonderful visit to fine fettle with you; I was spoilt rotten and enjoyed every minute of it!

We also welcome guest writer Henry Turner to our pages. Henry visited some local churches and tells us all about The Churches Conservation Trust local tour he attended recently.

I wonder how many of you know where the Bookham Bowling Club is? I enjoyed a recent visit and met a few local members there. It’s a really lovely local club with a very active social calendar. Why not give bowling a go this season?

And last but certainly not least, I share some images from Bookham Camera Club with you. I enjoyed a very entertaining evening with some of Bookham’s best photographic enthusiasts. Humour was the theme of the evening, and very funny it was, too!

Wishing you all a great month.

Warmest regards,

Ros x

A Lasting Power of Attorney is now as important as a will

In 2007, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came fully into force. If you do not have an LPA, family and friends will have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed a deputy to look after your affairs.

The application process is lengthy and complex and fraught with problems. When someone applies to become a deputy to look after your affairs, the initial fees and annual fees payable would be as follows:

• There is an application fee of £400.00* payable to the Court of Protection.

• There is also an annual supervision fee of up to £320.00*, depending on the level of supervision necessary.

• A security bond would also be needed, and based on an estate valued at £250,000, these can

typically cost on average £500.00* per annum.

• The time and expense of making annual returns to the Court of Protection.

It is far more sensible, whilst you have mental capacity, to safeguard your future by putting in place a Lasting Power of Attorney now. This will allow it to be used, should it be needed, without the initial and ongoing expense and annual reporting to the Court of Protection which would apply without one.

Mandara Wills is expertly positioned to arrange a Lasting Power of Attorney for clients at a fraction of the cost you would incur should one be required but not be in place.

* Court of Protection Website www.justice.gov.uk

Mandara Wills is an appointed representative of New Leaf (WWF) Ltd.Company registration no. 7891401. Registered address: Princess Caroline

House, 1 High Street, 1st Floor, Southend on Sea SS1 1JE.

If you lost mental capacity through an accident or an illness such as dementia, you would no longer be able to make your own decisions. You would be totally reliant on those around you, such as family or friends. However, if you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), they could not take control of your finances or take care of your personal welfare. Frightening when you think about it!

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting one of the finefettle therapists, Tara Von Spreckelsen. Originally from Ireland, Tara has been in the UK for the past 18 years and working from the Bookham-based clinic since it opened four years ago. She told me about two fantastic treatments she offers and I was lucky enough to experience both.

My first is a personal favourite. Reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, but it wasn’t until 1913 that it was introduced into the western world as a ‘zone therapy’ by Dr William Fitzgerald. It was then further developed in the 1930s by Eunice Ingram into what is now known as reflexology, a non-intrusive complementary therapy which works on points on your feet, lower legs or hands, in turn relating to different parts of your body. It was my feet that were in for a treat from Tara!

In my opinion, reflexology is one of the most relaxing treatments available. Gentle rubbing and pressure are applied to your feet and toes by the practitioner, not as

ticklish as I originally thought it might be, just very soothing. Tara gave me a fantastic treatment and I found myself deeply relaxed by the end. Highly recommended for anyone who is stressed or simply needs to relax for whatever reason.

The second treatment was a totally new experience for me and to be honest, I couldn’t quite imagine what it was going to be like. A No-Hands Massage: ‘deeply soothing, using long, slow arm, shoulder and knee movements that penetrate deeply into the body tissue.’

Tara explained that she is able to use mainly her forearms to cover a wider surface area than if she used just her hands, as in a conventional massage, thus stimulating more nerves and increasing the benefits of the massage as a whole. Weight is transferred gently and slowly, giving a systemic effect on the whole body and mind. I was encouraged to concentrate on breathing in and out as Tara applied (comfortable) pressure, and to feel and concentrate on the sensations,

REFLEXOLOGY AND NO-HANDS MASSAGE

Page 11: Look Local Magazine

which aids relaxation. Finally, I had to think about releasing tension; this is done when you breathe out and it really did make a difference.

This was like no other massage I have ever experienced. It was brilliantly relaxing, and the use of forearms actually makes so much sense, as a larger surface area of contact spreads the pressure and heightens the pleasure. At the end of the treatment, Tara encourages you to take a little walk around the room to register exactly how you feel. I felt a definite release of tension: my shoulders were no longer tight and I felt very relaxed. I also slept very soundly that night.

This massage is highly recommended. Tara provides friendly and professional

treatments with a lovely big Irish smile :-) It is really worthwhile to take some time out of your busy week and enjoy a little ‘me time’.Our bodies really need to be given time to just relax and I can’t think of a better way to achieve this.

Thank you so much, Tara, it was such fun meeting you and the treatments were fantastic. I will certainly be revisiting you very soon for some more of the same, please!

To find out more about these two treatments, visit Tara’s website : www.taravonspreckelsen.co.uk. Or simply call fine fettle on 01372 458984 to book your appointment.

A great way to treat yourself, because you really are worth it !

Encore Youth Orchestra is a vibrant orchestra for young people in our local area. It provides an opportunity for young people between the ages of 8 and 16 to have access to a well-organised and dynamic local orchestra.

It was established 30 years ago and continues to go from strength to strength. It is ably led by Andy Wilson, a trombone and tuba player in a number of bands in London and the South of England. He has a team of dedicated sectional leaders: Amy Parr (strings) was a member of the orchestra and brings extensive performance experience to the team; Emma Stoffer inspires the percussion section and currently works as a freelance musician. She has studied musical performance and takes a keen interest in working with young people and the positive effect that music has on them; Sarah Kent is the brass and woodwind tutor and plays the clarinet, cornet, euphonium and tenor horn. These adults are passionate about encouraging young people to realise the joy of creating music in a formal orchestral setting.

This year, the orchestra has mastered a diverse range of exciting music, from Mozart’s Children’s Symphony to the

theme tunes from movies such as Mission Impossible, Pirates of the Caribbean and James Bond.

Twice a year, the orchestra has great pleasure in performing for residents at a residential home in Bookham, which provides assisted living for the elderly. The children always enjoy this and the residents are thrilled at the chance to hear the young people. There is a lot of toe-tapping and clapping!

‘Encore’ meets to rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 6.00 to 7.15pm at the Manor House School in Bookham. New members are always welcome and even encouraged to come along for a free trial!

The orchestra is planning a 30th birthday concert in June, details of which will be published on their website.

For further information on the ‘Encore’ and forthcoming events, log on to www.encoreyouthorchestra.org or find them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/EncoreYouth/Orchestra. Or contact Lizzie Lucas-Clements on 01483 281 416.We wish them much success with their music-making for many years to come.Encore!

The Church Conservation Trust, a charity that maintains old churches no longer in use, is hoping to invigorate Britain’s interest in exploring the hidden historical gems around us by organising several tours through May to October across the country.

I was offered the chance to investigate Surrey’s “Lords and Gentry” tour and visit three of the four churches, each sharing historical links to the aristocracy, that

participants would visit by coach. The tour’s first destination is the village of

Albury. Nestled within the grounds of the imposing mansion is the small Saxon church of St Peter & St Paul. Surrounded by grass and sporting an original medieval porch, it looks idyllic.

I met local volunteer Daphne Foulsham, who took me into the church through its huge original door. Stepping through, it felt like

HISTORIC CHURCH TOURS 2014

Page 25: Look Local Magazine

I’d travelled back in time. The church was a bright and open space, made airy by its relative emptiness.

It seemed devoid of ornamentation; its white-washed walls were bare for the most part, except for a large painted medieval mural of St. Christopher and Christ.

Daphne told me that the striking work had been washed over to save it from the Reformation and the image was reportedly exposed inadvertently by a workman fitting a nearby plaque; he was said to have been terrified as, atop his ladder, he was brought face-to-face with a staring saint.

The church was key to village life, but things changed when the landowners sold out to the Drummonds, who came into conflict with the local congregation. The parishioners were convinced ultimately to move to a new church, paid for by the family. This left them free to alter the old church, adding in a chapel designed by Pugin, famed for designing the Palace of Westminster’s interior. The colourful Gothic splendour of this small adjoining room strikes a real contrast with its spartan surroundings.

The next stop was St Mary’s in Stoke d’Abernon, Surrey’s oldest church, which is still in use to this day. Its interior was large, well-ornamented and full of objects showcasing different points in English history.

Stephen Chater, the man running the tour, spoke with me about it and the work of the CCT. He observed that churches offer a lens into the history of Britain, and as they change and adapt over time, they exhibit evidence of the standards of those who worshipped within them.

St Mary’s itself is a living example of this and evidence of its Saxon origins were apparent. An inaccessible doorway, visible high on one of the walls, is believed to have

opened onto a Saxon Lord’s private gallery.Like many others, this church suffered

from the Reformation: monuments near the altar were smashed, along with the original stained glass. Nevertheless, many pre-Reformation relics remained, such as a pair of Britain’s oldest military brass memorials., and these were later complemented by an intricate 18th century pulpit.

The last church to see was St George’s, Esher, a Tudor church in Esher’s town centre. It sports a quaint stonework exterior and has a notable original clock, still in fully working order.

If St Mary’s had struck me as a fusion, this was an outright amalgamation. Upon entering the church, my eye was immediately drawn to an out-of-place Georgian gallery built into the south wall. This “pew” was built by the Duke of Newcastle. With its own entrance, it enabled the haves to avoid the have-nots when attending services. In a bid to keep things fashionable, the family also replaced all the church’s windows.

The church is also known for a Royal connection: one marble memorial is dedicated to the death of the popular Princess Charlotte, who, with her husband Prince Leopold, was a part of the congregation while the couple lived at Claremont House.

But many elements pre-date the 19th century. The building possesses an original 18th century pulpit and, impressively, has the original Tudor beams visible above in the roof.

All in all, it was a pleasant day spent exploring Surrey’s heritage. It’s clear that the CCT does important work in maintaining our living history.

Gardens of Bookham Open Day 2014 Sunday 22nd June 2014 10.30am to 5pm.

The long, wet winter & driving winds have presented a challenge to gardeners everywhere. So the arrival of spring is all the more welcome, especially for our stalwart band of garden openers who are busy preparing for this year’s Gardens of Bookham Open Day on 22nd June, the day after Village Day.

Now in its ninth year, the event provides a wonderful opportunity to explore other people’s gardens, pick up tips for your own plot & soak up the atmosphere of this happy, community occasion.

There will be over ten varied and interesting private gardens with beautiful flowers, plants & trees to delight the senses, plus the Little Bookham Allotments whose dedicated gardeners always provide a colourful display & where there will be a plant sale. The Grange Centre Victorian walled garden, with its attractive array of roses, chemical-free fruit & vegetables, potted flowers & herbs will also be open to visitors. We’ve included some pictures of last year’s gardens to give you a flavour of what’s in store.

Proceeds from the event go towards the upkeep of our valued Old Barn Hall, the venue for many local activities & a focal point for village life.

The Old Barn Hall will also be offering a

welcome break along the way, with delicious home-baked cakes, savoury rolls & drinks served throughout the day, plus a raffle with a selection of great prizes donated by local firms and organisations. In contrast to the last few years, this year’s event does not clash with Father’s Day so we hope to see some new visitors who have previously not been able to join us.

We are very grateful to the Vineries Garden Centre for their support in sponsoring our Open Gardens Day, and to The National Trust who offer ticket holders one free visit to the lovely gardens at Polesden Lacey (23rd to 29th June).

Tickets (available from 16th May):£5.00 in advance, or £6.00 on the day

* The Vineries Garden Centre, Lower Road * Weale’s Store, Little Bookham Street * Wishing Well card shop, 7 High Street* Bungalow Stores, Beckley Parade * Village Day, 19th June on the field * The Old Barn Hall office, Church Road (Tel 01372 456307. Bookham Bowling Club has approximately 125 playing members and about 70 social members. The club also has 5 official coaches who are available to offer support and encouragement to new members or to help existing members improve their game.

Recently, I went along to meet Ron Parslow and Tony Moore, two long-standing members, who kindly showed me around and told me a little bit about the club.

I expect many Bookham residents don’t

actually know where Bookham Bowling Club is! I had a good idea of its location but had never actually seen the club. It is situated on the left hand side of the Dorking Road next to Chrystie Rec, set back a little from the road, and not obvious at first glance. There is a little car park in front of the club, right next to the park.

Bowls is one of the few sports which offers equal ability levels for female and male members, so around 40% of matches are

mixed. During the season, matches take place on Saturdays and Sundays and on a few weekdays too, with visiting clubs coming from all around Surrey. Even in late March when I visited, the bowling green looked wonderful. Originally, the grass for the green was transported from Bookham Commons back in 1933, although over the years, it has been replaced and replenished during ongoing maintenance which is carried out by a specialist green keeper throughout the year. Club members all lend a hand with the rest of the club’s running and upkeep.

Ron and Tony showed me around the clubhouse. It is small and friendly and is home to the club bar.The clubhouse is used all year round for social events and even some indoor bowling practice during the winter months. The outdoor bowling season

runs from mid-April to September. Bookham Bowling Club is hosting some

days in early May for interested newcomers to try their hand at bowling. If you have missed these dates shown on the little advert here, please do get in touch with the club and they would be very happy to welcome you on another day. They have a selection of bowls available for you to use and you simply need to wear flat-soled shoes or trainers and comfortable clothes. Most members own their own bowls, but it’s well worth trying a few before you buy to gauge which weight is right for you.

I really enjoyed meeting Ron and Tony. This is a friendly little club and it seems that members enjoy a busy social life all year round, whilst keeping fit and active at the same time! Why not give it a go?

50 Things May-hem! This May, the National Trust will re-launch its popular ‘50 things to do

before you’re 11¾’ campaign. Originally introduced in response to the Natural Childhood report, which highlighted evidence of a long-term and dramatic decline in children’s relationship with the outdoors, we hope it will encourage even more kids to get mucky, discover their wild side and get closer to nature.

At Polesden Lacey, near Dorking, you can kick-start your 2014 adventure at our 50 Things Camp, running every day from Sat 24 May – Sun 1 June. For the price of normal admission, plus £1 per child, take part in a bug hunt, go orienteering or explore deep inside a tree.

You can visit any participating National Trust place to pick up your 50 things scrapbook; then download a 50 things planner to find out where to tick off the activities in your area at nationaltrust.org.uk/southeast.

Dress the salad leaves and rocket with a vinaigrette dressing of your choice and arrange on a plate – add baby tomatoes and sliced cucumber.

Remove the peppers from the oven and lay on the salad. Add the grilled halloumi to the salad.

As promised, I’m going to have a go at explaining some of the Latin used in plant names. This may end up a little repetitive of March’s offering, for which I apologise, but here goes…

A universal name for plants was needed for 2 reasons: firstly, it made sense that a single name was used whenever a plant was talked/written about, whether you were in England or Brazil or Russia, because a different name in each country leads to confusion, as in the example of ‘bluebell’ that I gave last time. In 1753, when Linnaeus devised the system of naming plants, Latin was the only universal language, and also still the language of science, so it was the obvious choice, although many other languages are also used in the naming of plants, simply not as frequently.

The names given to the 1st element - the genus - come from different sources, sometimes descriptive - Convallaria, meaning ‘growing in valleys’ - , sometimes the name by which they’ve been known since ancient times, sometimes made up, sometimes named after a person - Fuchsia after Leonhart Fuchs and Wisteria after Caspar Wistar.

The 2nd element, the species, refers to individual plants, rather than a group, and the name often describes the plant in some way: eg Geranium pratense, meaning ‘of the meadow’, whose common name is meadow

cranesbill. The description can be of its general personality, colour, marking, shape, texture, size, fragrance, taste, flowering time, habitat, the direction in which it grows, or its resemblance to other things. It can refer to people - a saint maybe, or the person who

first discovered or introduced it – or to a place, either a continent or a country, a state or a town, village or garden. Finally, it can be derived from the language local to where the plant is found.

Cultivar names are given to particular varieties of plants not so much to distinguish them botanically from another plant, but rather that gardeners can make a distinction: eg all

Dianthus cultivars are the same botanically, but the different colours and appearance of the flowers make it important to know which one is being referred to. Cultivar names are in any language other than Latin and in single quotation marks. They are often named after the person who raised them, or to commemorate someone, or after a town, village or garden. Thus, we have Dianthus ‘Bookham Fancy’, ‘Bookham Gleam’, ‘Bookham Grand’, ‘Bookham Heroine’, ‘Bookham Lad’, ’Bookham Lass’, ‘Bookham Perfume’ and ‘Bookham Sprite’! Fame at last.

Next month, I’ll go into the naming in a little more detail to try to help you know what you’re looking at when you’re at the garden centre in search of certain colours or habits…..

LIBERATE YOUR MUSIC, with

We are always looking for innovative and exciting products to add further enjoyment to your digital home and complement the way you use and consume sound, be it music you own from online music sources such as Spotify, Napster, Deezer, Last.FM, or directly from the radio or internet radio.

Sonos is a manufacturer who saw the potential in 2002 for wireless high quality sound systems. It has changed the way we enjoy sound, and 12 years later, has some ingenious products which offer fabulous sound quality, total versatility and a huge variety from an unrivalled selection of music sources.

With a Sonos system, you can have multiple units located around the home or office; they need to connect wirelessly to a Sonos bridge unit which in turn is connected to your router. Each speaker can be individually controlled or controlled as a part of a group or all units playing the same music. By way of an example, you could have a unit in the kitchen, playing Michael Buble from your iTunes library on your PC, a unit in the lounge streaming Radio 1, a unit in your study playing “The Killers” from Spotify and a unit in the kids’ bedroom playing One Direction, streaming off their Android phone. Each unit can be controlled from a PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone, either centrally or in each room or zone.

The devices we will concentrate on at the moment are the self-contained “Play” range of speakers. The setup and use of all of the models are the same, and follow one concept, which is simplicity. Once the bridge is plugged in, press the button on the bridge and the play speaker, and the installation is complete!

From your PC, Mac, tablet or/and smartphone, you control the play unit’s volume, tone and playlists in its entirety.

With the range of speakers starting at £169.00, it’s a small price for such a huge amount of enjoyment.

We have the units on display for you to experience, so if you’d like to find out more, please call in and prepare to be impressed.

D I A B E T E S Let’s take a look at diabetes over the next few

issues...there is an epidemic that we need to be taking seriously.

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) accounts for about 85% of all cases of diabetes and is often, but not always, related to lifestyle. There are strong family links with T2DM and the risks can be as high as 75% for some individuals.

With T2DM, we are basically looking at two issues. The pancreas does not produce as much insulin as is needed, along with the body being unable to use that insulin effectively. This is known as insulin resistance and can be the biggest challenge with T2DM. Insulin is needed to regulate blood sugar levels, and a reduced level of insulin that works less efficiently leads to a rise in blood sugar levels. This is usually when a diagnosis is made.

However, there are manageable factors which can help reduce the body’s resistance to insulin. The two most common factors contributing to this resistance are a lack of exercise and excess weight, so an increase in activity levels, weight loss and a change in diet can have huge health benefits and may even help renormalise blood sugar levels. Being more active generally and trying to factor this into a daily routine is usually most effective and sustainable. Diet is fundamental to managing diabetes by minimising sugar intake and managing sensible carbohydrate portions.

We will be looking at this more in the next issue....For more info: https://www.diabetes.org.uk

LISTEN TO THE SOARING MELODIES OF THE NIGHTINGALE ON BOOKHAM COMMONS

Join National Trust Ranger on a walk to hear this amazing bird

Bookham Commons, on the edge of the village of Bookham in Surrey, is an ancient place, with veteran oaks, medieval fish ponds & a

dazzling array of birds & other wildlife calling the place home. But it’s for another reason each May that it becomes even more special, for

this is home to one of our increasingly rare birds: the nightingale.

You can join Ian on a guided walk of the commons this May & hear for yourself the beautiful song of the nightingale, as well as the

other scents & sounds of the commons. Ian will be leading walks on Wednesdays 7 and 14 May from 7.30pm until 10pm.

Booking is essential on 01372 220644 & tickets cost £12 per person.Photo: A summer’s evening on Bookham Common by Joe Cornish.

Recently, I went along to visit the club and enjoyed an evening presentation by Keith Hughes, entitled Humour Through My Lens!

Keith Hughes started to take photographs of odd subjects some 50 years ago almost by accident. Over the years, he has collected over 100 amusing pictures. His main claim to fame is that he had two of his humour photographs hung in the Kodak humour exhibition. His pictures have also appeared in books, magazines (including Punch & Look Local!), national & local papers and photographic publications.

Keith delivered a very entertaining commentary with his display of amusing images.

During the second half of the evening, a selection of members’ humorous images were shown. We see here a selection from the evening. Bookham Camera Club welcomes new members, whatever your level of skill or amount of equipment.

If you would like to know more, visit their website www.bookhamcc.org or call their chairman Roger Mendham on 01372 459527. Thank you for a very entertaining evening!
