The Local Magazine - March/April 2015 3

Welcome to our Autumn issue and what a better way to celebrate than with a new look. This issue is special in more ways than one. First up we have some new team members on board for this landmark issue and they have done an amazing job and without them it would be impossible to get the magazine up and running. This issue is packed full of exciting things for Easter and we also take a special look back on the 100 Year Anniversary of the ANZAC’s and it’s impact on our small rural community. The Local Magazine is something I’m very passionate about and I think showcasing our beautiful town is really important, not just for our visitors but also for ourselves. Sometimes we forget what amazing things we have in our own

backyard. I also started the magazine as a way for local businesses to promote themselves in a modern and affordable way. I think we are achieving that especially with our new look. If you are interested in advertising please let us know because the more advertisers we get the more pages and interesting features we can add to the magazine and we wouldnt have a magazine without you. We are looking forward to doing more and more issues with amazing local photos and stories not only about our rich history but also what amazing things Tenterfield people living here and away are up to now. We hope you enjoy our new issue as much as we do, until next time :)

AUTUMN BEAUTY TIPS

WHOLE FOODIES

It’s time to overhaul your cosmetics bag that’s spilling over with old light pink eyeshadows and champagne coloured lippys. Ashleigh Dowd

Low Calorie, Paleo, Sugar Free, Raw, Vegan, Vegetarian there is so much out there but which one is right for you?

It’s actually unknown to many women, but your makeup does have an expiry date which should be followed, just as your brushes need a good wash and clean. You wouldn’t eat out of date food, so why assault your skin with out of date concealers or dirty brushes? This Autumn, the catwalk calls for a darker more delicate palette of silver and icy-blue shadows, kohl-laden eyes and wine-stained lips. That’s right, it’s come time to pack away your bronze shadows and shimmery opalescent lippys and try experimenting with darker tones and letting your inner goddess shine through.

There is a lot of talk surrounding clean eating and subscribing to this diet or that. Our philosophy is to keep things as simple as possible, there isnt one particular diet that is going to suit everyone, just as our tastes vary so does what our body requires from our food and this can change from day to day. As seasons merge from one into another so does the nutrients our body needs. We go from wanting fresh salads and fruit to more heartier richer meals to keep our body warm in the colder months and protect us from illness. By selecting whole foods to eat you have already cut down on sugar, preservatives and rancid fats that invade our packaged foods that line the shelves of supermarkets. Eating whole foods needn’t be ex-pensive if you choose cheaper cuts of meat to stew or braise and select produce that is in season. You’ll be surprised the amount of money you actually save.

high intense workout is to be beneficial for our health rather than slogging it out for hours on end. High-intensity interval training (HIIT), also called high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE) or sprint interval training (SIT), is an enhanced form of interval training, an exercise strategy alternating periods of short intense anaerobic exercise with less-intense recovery periods. HIIT is a form of cardiovascular exercise. Check out the local Gym or workout at home

with an app on your phone or do both. Tenterfield has plenty of classes available. Even if you just tell your-self you are going to just workout for 10 minutes you’ll find soon enough that you can keep going for longer. Getting motivated to start is the hardest bit.

Now you’ve got your food sorted what about keeping active? We have so many beautiful walking tracks around Tenterfield, grab a few friends or the family and rug up and head outdoors. Scientists are now finding that a shorter but a more

Let’s not forget the way you treat your body inside as well as out. Although summer was a time for cocktails and fun, we suggest you try swapping a few of your alcoholic and caffeinated drinks for a more natural herbal tea or water with a twist of citrus. It was easy to stay hydrated in the summer, feeling hot and thirsty all the time, but it is important to keep your fluids up to store the energy needed for these Autumn months. So take the time to finally pay back your body and skin, before preparing it for the cold months ahead.

LAYER LAYER LAYERFASHION

However, first things first which is to recognise the new you in the new season. So it’s now time to pack away your summer wardrobe and go through all of last year’s Autumn style only keeping what you really think will be worn. Remember, there is no point in keeping a wardrobe full of clothes that you’ve never worn, and likely never will. Next is to recognise your own personal style. This can be done by simply trying on different tops and mixing and matching until you find an outfit you are both comfortable in, and simply represents you. When it comes to layering there are no set rules but it’s always best to start off with a simple, form fitting neutral top. After that, it’s a lot like a recipe to getting the perfect look.Try adding a soft

pullover or bold cardigan next and experiment with colour, keeping it complimentary to your own natural tones. Next you need something a little heavier to anchor your outfit down, a basic coloured jacket or coat could do the trick. Now finally you need a scarf around your neck or a belt to slim down your waistline, a touch of jewellery - and you’re done.Just remember, layering is a fun and interesting style that you can experiment with everyday, trying out different tones and textures while keeping length and proportion a key element. So play around with the recipe to the perfect layered style, it’s so simple that anyone can do it.

Often a daunting idea to many women, layering clothes has been wrongly labeled as a frumpy and disjointed look, however when done right it can easily upgrade you from drab to fab within just seconds. For whatever body shape or size you have, the extra layers on top of your norm is an easy way to compliment your natural curves and a perfect style to experiment with in the Autumn season. ANZAC DAY FEATURE

100 YEARS OF ANZACBetween 2014 and 2018 Australia will commemorate the Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War.

The Anzac Centenary is a milestone of

special significance to all Australians.

The First World War helped define us

as people and as a nation.

During the Anzac Centenary we will

remember not only the original

ANZACs who served at Gallipoli and

the Western Front, but commemorate

more than a century of service by

Australian servicemen and women.

The Anzac Centenary Program

encompasses all wars, conflicts and

peacekeeping operations in which

Australians have been involved.

The Program aims to give all

Australians the opportunity to honour

the service and sacrifice of all those

who have worn our nation’s uniform,

including the more than 102,000 who

have made the supreme sacrifice.

It also aims to encourage all Australians

to reflect upon and learn more about

REMEMBERING some of TENTERFIELD’S FIGHTING SONS OF THE EMPIRE

Page 9: The Local Magazine

With the 100 year Anniversary of our Anzacs coming up, what a better way to remember our local sons and daughters who fought and supported our country and way of life, than with a tribute through Australian poetry. Nicole Brown

ANZAC DAY FEATURE

THE BUSH HEART OF ANZAC

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful man named Dennis Scanlon and interviewed him about his newly released CD that is a collection of poetry called “The Bush Heart of Anzac” recorded here in Tenterfield with local musician Peter Harris.

Tenterfield was the perfect place to launch Dennis’ new CD as its a town he holds close to his heart from fourteen happy years at “Burrendoon” at Sunnyside, a place that got him back to the bush to raise his family.

I heard Dennis arrive before I saw him, a chirpy whistle approached and a likeable fellow followed. Feeling immediately at ease we sat down and started chatting about his new CD and the obvious passion he has for bush poetry and the people he writes about.

Dennis’ latest project is a CD with 15 of his original Poems. Nine tracks honour men from the bush who left farms and families to serve Australia in conflicts in many countries over many years. From the Boer War, through both World Wars and Vietnam, the ‘Spirit of the Anzac’ flows strong and brave. Six final tracks then offer the best of the ‘Bush’ heart – caring, sharing and giving, in everyday life.

Dennis was asked to write a poem for the yearly get together of The Tyalgum Diggers, a tradition that started back in 1918. It was called the Stump Club back then and was held in a paddock on a Saturday where the returned servicemen gathered to share drinks, stories, 2up and continued their camaraderie with

rough and tumble games of tug o war, and other physical feats.

This poem started Dennis’ journey to creating a series of poetry based around the Anzacs and the impact the war had on them, their families, as well as the many different animals which have ‘served’ in so many ways over the years

Dennis’ focus is not so much on the war itself but of a way to honour the men and women that sacrificed so much. His love of the bush spirit and the bush heart is a major theme in his poetry and it’s some-thing that is present in the way he speaks about his own life and the people he has met along the way.

Dennis described himself as a “crusty old bushman” who loves the straight talking no nonsense style of rural Australia but underneath the crustiness is the soul of a poet and someone with a lifetime of wisdom who is generous enough share his thoughts through his well crafted words.

As someone who was really only exposed to poetry in my high school english class in between passing notes to each other and dodging spit balls from the boys up the back, it wasn’t something that I was all that interested in and to be honest I thought bush poetry was a bit daggy, but after having the privilege of Dennis personally read to me a few verses of his poem and describe the heart and soul that goes into them I have discovered a new found appreciation for the bush poet and the words and wisdom that they share.

If you would like to get one of Dennis’s CDs and experience “The Bush Heart of Anzac” for yourself it is available to purchase from the Tenterfield Visitors Centre or from Dennis directly at [email protected].

FOOD & WINE

WHATS IN SEASON!!

HERBILICIOUS

There’s a huge variety of fresh produce available in autumn. Buying in season is not only more affordable but its when the produce is at its best and the highest in nutrients .

Herbs are the easiest way to elevate a dish from okay to amazing. Instead of buying expensive plastic packets from the supermarket grab a seedling of a hardy herb and put them in a pot or straight in the garden.

Apples: Not just a handy snack, apples add zing to a salad

Kiwifruit: kiwifruits contain more Vitamin C than oranges

Pears: Use in baking, savoury dishes and they are great in a salad with walnuts and blue cheese.

Grapes: Perfect for a cheese platter or to snack on

With the weather cooling and we start to gravitate toward soups, roasts and braises. The best way to take a meal to the next level is with the addition of herbs. Hardy varieties such as rosemary thyme & bay are the pick for the season. Rosemary is the perfect partner to roast chicken or lamb. A pot with a bay tree near the back door is a great way to quickly add a savoury note to a slow cooked casserole.

Braising is one of the best ways to get the benefits of meat and vegetables because it is cooked at a low temperature for a long time, not only that but you can use the cheaper cuts of meat and feed a large family with plenty leftover to make into pies or toasted up in the jaffle the next day. A perfect way to cook for camping as well.

An interesting way to use thyme is to add it to a root vegetable gratin, kicking the humble potato bake up a gear. Use parsnips, potatoes, and butternut pumpkin sliced thinly and layered into a greased baking dish rubbed with a cut garlic clove.

Season each layer with salt and pepper, sprinkle thyme and rosemary and a small handful of grated Gruyere and Pecorino cheese on each layer. Pour over cream and remaining cheese and bake in the oven until cooked through, browned and bubbling. A perfect accompaniment to a roast.

Eggplant: a versatile vegie, eggplant can be baked, stir fried or grilled

Carrots: carrots are the second most popular vegetable in the world, and with good reason!

Avocado: contains healthy fats that reduce ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol in our blood

Sweet Potato: with it’s deliciously sweet flavour, this versatile vegie can be used in sweet and savoury dishes.

HOME & GARDEN

GETTING COZY Its time to think about cozy cocooning for the cooler nights and frosty mornings. Taking bedding from lightweight sheets and cotton blankets to layers of fluffy doonas, softly textured blankets and chunky knit throws.

Texture and layering is key here, add a padded headboard and you’ve got yourself a retreat for cold times ahead. Timber or wicker accents bring a warmth and add to the overall ambience.

With heaters and fires getting started, a build up of carbon dioxide is offset by adding some indoor plants to the mix, keeping the interior air healthy. Don’t forget to throw open a window during the warmth of the day to stop the air from getting stale.

The bonus of bringing in plants is that they bring the outside in and add a calming energy to the home.

She chose Arbonne because of the company’s promise to its clients, Pure, Safe and Beneficial. Thats when Lucy’s Arbonne journey began, and the Beauty Spot took off. Lucy said that she “talked, walked and breathed Arbonne and proudly became a product behind the product” she threw herself wholeheartedly into her new and exciting opportunity. She said she became hooked on the product and constantly received compliments on her skin and overall appearance. “I became a walking advertisement for my online skincare business and my Beauty Spot beauty salon. I am very blessed to have the most amazing and supportive husband who encourages me all the way. Our beautiful children Luke

and Olivia light up my life and they are the reason I am so committed to building my Arbonne Business. I am doing this to create a legacy for them!” Lucy’s family and friends can see and feel her determination “I am so grateful for the support they give me”. The Arbonne Business is growing because of Lucy’s committment to excellent Customer service. “The support I receive from all my clients because of the results these products give shows a tremendous future for both The Beauty Spot and my on-line Arbonne Business”. She has been in her new business for 6 months now. “The more I believe in myself, the more I plug into training to find out more about Arbonne and the Products, the more I read, the more objections I get and the more hurdles I must jump makes me even more determined to show and lead others to succeed in their very own Arbonne business”. Any business can be tough at times and at the end of everyday Lucy says she loves what she does. “I love these amazing Products, I love helping people and I love

bringing the best out in everyone I meet. My Beauty Spot business and my Arbonne skincare business allows me to put smiles on people’s faces and Arbonne puts a smile on mine”. Lucy has 6 Consultants that have joined her. Rachel Brown is one of those six. Lucy says that Rachel’s experience in massage is nothing but the best, her dedication in learning all she can about these products shows nothing but commitment, her self development, growth and confidence grows everyday. Rachel has now branched out to Glen Innes and Stanthorpe and is in high demand. Lucy says that her and her team are meeting the most amazing women in this line of work and gaining friendships that will last a lifetime. “I’m sure Rachel is just as pleased as I am to have said YES to this amazing Arbonne Opportunity” If you would like more information on the business or products you can call Lucy or Rachel on the number below and book a consultation or treat yourself to a facial or a massage.

OUT & ABOUT

March and April is a great time to be in Tenterfield – we’re coming into the beautiful Autumn period and there’s so many great events in town! Welcoming a 30 piece brass band from Bavaria and a number of Aussie bush poets and balladeers into the region, there’s an event to suit everyone! The start of Autumn brings with it a week of musical entertainment, featuring a 30 piece Brass Band direct from the Allgau’

region of Bavaria, Germany. There’s plenty of opportunities during the week to enjoy the traditional music, with a civic welcome and band recital on Wednesday 4th March and an Original Bavarian Brass Band Concert at the School of Arts on the 5th March. The festivities culminate with the 8th Biennial Tenterfield Rotary Bavarian Beerfest on Saturday 7th March! Don’t miss this celebration of fine German music, beer and food.

Towards the end of March (26-29th) renowned bush poets Marco Gliori, Murray Hartin and Peter Mace, as well as Balladeer Bec Hance are in town for Oracles of the Bush. Celebrating bush poetry, music and art, this is always a great event. With a packed schedule, events include the Induction of the 2015 Oracles Legend (Perry Condrick), Children’s Concert, breakfasts and lunches at a variety of venues, poetry competition heats and finals, Old time Dance and the Poets’ Brawl Breakfast, there’s also markets, an arts and crafts display and the Centenary Cottage Museum display. And don’t forget about the Markets around the region (Tenterfield Railway Museum, Drake, Urbenville & Wallangarra – just to name a few), and art exhibitions which are happening all the time. If you’re looking for more, head over to the Torrington Easter Funday and enjoy market stalls and entertainment. March and April is the perfect time of year to get out into the National Parks, get back to nature and enjoy the cooler temperature as you sit around a roaring camp fire. Why not take a short break away from home and enjoy the spectacular scenery the National Parks in the region have to offer. With exceptionally maintained facilities (BBQs, firewood provided and clean bush toilets), switch off and enjoy some peace and quiet. Bald Rock, Boonoo Boonoo, Torrington and Koreelah National Parks and Basket Swamp and Tooloom Falls all offer great camping options! With the leaves starting to turn and so many great events on around town, now’s the perfect time to invite your friends and family to visit and show them what the beautiful town of Tenterfield is all about!
