It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

There’s a chill in the air. Shop windows sparkle with holiday fashions. Eggnog lattes have returned to coffee house menus. And party invites are rolling into the Inbox. The holiday season is a special time of year, as we open our homes to family and friends, celebrate the sights and sounds of winter festivities, and toast to the year ahead.

For this latest issue of Look, we turned to the experts for their ideas and advice on entertaining in style. Scott Pearce, of GardenWorks, takes us on a tour of the Christmas tree lot. Raincoast Crisps creator Lesley Stowe shares her recipes for easy appetizers. And our wine experts, Michelle Bouffard and Michaela Morris, uncork their festive favourites. Vancouver fashion photographer Zenaida Kwong shot our fashion story, White Nights, in which stylist Deanna Palkowski shows us how winter white, silver and gold (and not a stitch of black) are setting the new standard in evening wear for the holiday season.

We also shopped our local boutiques for the latest gift items and gadgets. See all of these objects of desire for home and body, work and leisure, trendsetters and tots in our handy pullout Holiday Gift Guide.

Happy holidays!

Natural Douglas Fir 3-11 ft. $-$$ Most affordable and a popular choice, with very fragrant needles. Broadly tapered, with space between the branches, each tree has its own unique character. Grown in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia, these trees are produced using a sustainable method known as “stump culture,” where a tree is cut, leaving the bottom two or three branches near the ground, generating a new tree top for harvest in seven to 10 years. Once brought indoors, it will hold most of its needles for a maximum of two to three weeks.

CultureD Douglas Fir 4-9 ft. $$-$$$Features a full, dense canopy of rich green to blue-green, fragrant needles and a symmetrical tapered shape. Cultured Douglas fir are planted on tree farms as seedlings and then fertilized and pruned annually for about five to seven years before being harvested. Needles hold well for up to three weeks.

graND Fir 7-9 ft. $$$Grown on tree farms, and tend to grow at a rate similar to a Doug fir, but a bit more finicky, requiring more attention. Cultured Grand fir (Abies grandis) has a dense canopy of glossy dark green needles, and a lovely citrus fragrance. Needle retention is on par with cultured Douglas fir.

Noble Fir 3-9 ft. $$$-$$$$The gold standard of fresh-cut Christmas trees. Broadly tapered from bottom to top, with deep green to blue-green needles and a moderate fragrance. Planted as seedlings on tree farms, Abies procera is fertilized and pruned annually for seven years or more before harvest. Space between branches for decorations to hang naturally, strong branches to hold heavy ornaments without sagging, and a full, layered appearance. Needles hold for more than four weeks.

Fraser Fir 5-9 ft. $$$$ A narrow form makes Abies fraseri a good choice where space is limited. Grown primarily in the East, but tree farms in B.C., Washington and Oregon plant some each year. Needles are medium green, often with silvery undersides and with some fragrance. Needle retention is almost as good as a noble fir. Strong branches hold heavy decorations without sagging.

NorDmaNN Fir 5-8 ft. $$$$ A “true fir” (Abies nordmanniana) native to the Republic of Georgia and northern Turkey. Features beautiful, soft shiny needles with a deep green colour and evenly spaced strong branches perfect for heavy ornaments. Holds its branches for more than four weeks.

blue sPruCe 5-8 ft. $$$$The most traditional of Christmas trees. Grown in colder climates and in the past more readily available than the varieties that are popular today. Sharp needles make them hard to handle, and they are less likely to hold needles for more than 10 to 14 days. These days, blue spruce still has a following, valued for its steel blue colour. Look to choose these as freshly cut as possible, and be sure to wear gloves!

air pulled smartly into a posh ponytail complements bare-shouldered fashions, whatever the season.

For New York designer Carolina Herrera’s spring-summer 2012 collection, celebrity hair stylist Orlando Pita created a gracefully looped ponytail.

Get the look this party season with these tips from the star stylist, who uses Moroccanoil products to give hair a smooth, shiny and frizz-free texture.

Apply a hydrating styling cream on dampened hair for a smooth soft hold, then blow-dry straight. Next, part hair in the middle and pull into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Tease hair to add fullness, especially if hair is fine, and spray with hairspray. Loop the teased length of the ponytail onto an elastic, shape into a triangle, and wrap a section of hair around the elastic to finish. Secure with hairpins and spritz the entire style with hairspray. Finish with a light mist of Moroccanoil’s new Frizz Control.

Moroccanoil is sold exclusively in salons. For the location nearest you, visit moroccanoil.com.

olished nails from nearly nude to artfully adorned are creating a buzz on the catwalk and providing inspiration just in time for the party season.

Metallic nail lacquers are the perfect complement to sparkly holiday fashions, says Vancouver nail artist Christina Culver, of THEY Rep, who worked the spring-summer 2012 collections at New York fashion week.

“Mixing matte with glossy finishes, tone-on-tone, is a modern take on the trend. “It’s elegant and pretty,” says Culver, who is a fan of Butter London nail lacquers, sold in specialty stores like BeautyMark in Yaletown, where Culver sees clients by appointment.

The nail pro used Pearly Queen for the base and Diamond Geezer for the custom nail art pictured here. Keep it neutral, she advises. “Summer screams more for bright bold prints and super colour.” A French manicure with colour or with a matte base and glossy tip is the way to go for the holidays.

Another favourite: Black Knight, “a wicked multicolour glitter in a black polish” from Butter London’s holiday collection.

PERIODONTAL THERAPYPeriodontal Disease is an infection of the gums and bone that surround teeth. At ARTIS we now offer LAPT – the most advanced, non surgical treatment for periodontal disease. Unlike traditional gum surgery that involves scalpels, stitches and intense post-operative pain, most patients being treated with LAPT experience minimal discomfort and are even able to return to daily activities the very same day.

Have you been told that you have “deep pockets” between your teeth and gums? There is signifi cant proof that LAPT in addition to conventional scaling and root planing will allow your gums to reattach and help shrink the pockets. The goal of LAPT is to stabilize your gums and prevent any further bone loss, helping you retain your healthy teeth and prevent tooth loss.

HOLIDAY 2011

Lighten Up!by Erica Hughes

At this time of year, we all tend to do a little more hibernating,

perhaps a little more cooking (and eating) and a little more organizing. With the amount of daylight declining every day, it’s a great opportunity to step inside your closet with a cup of tea and do some serious purging. Those ratty old sweaters that you have been holding onto for three years, and now are not even wearable to the grocery store, need to be tossed. Those outdated wool coats that you think can pass as somewhat current, won’t. The black basic layering tees that have had holes in them for the past year that you hope no one will spot, need to be replaced. The faded tights that are too tight around your waist need to be burned! The black winter riding boots that are stained from the salt of years-gone-by need to be relegated to the garden only.

I think you get the point. If it looks old, worn or ratty, you won’t feel your best wearing it. By lightening your closet of all of the misfi ts and “I may wear them someday”

pieces you can concentrate on simplifying your daily struggle of what to wear on a cold, rainy winter’s morning. This fall is all about a comfortable elegance. It’s about the sweater coats, the stretch denim jeans, the oversize infi nity scarf, the cozy tights and the fi tted sweater dress. It’s about the amazing blazer (and I don’t mean a blazer that has a matching skirt) paired with those spectacular riding boots that make you feel like a million bucks every time you wear them. It’s also about layering those long comfy cotton tanks under everything, especially with a cute chunky cropped sweater.

Now that your closest is lighter, you can concentrate on the fast approaching holiday season. Creams, silvers and golds are playing a big role this time around. If you insist on wearing velvet pants, make sure they’re leggings. And fi nally, if you are feeling very festive this year, red always works!

Have a safe and happy holiday season.

VEGETABLE HERB RISOTTO

RisottoINGREDIENTS1 cup Arborio rice ½ White onion 2 cloves Garlic2 Tbsp Vegetable oil2 Tbsp Butter4 sprigs Thyme50 mL Dry white wine3 cups Vegetable stock2 Tbsp Parmesan cheese4 sprigs Chive2 Tbsp Mushroom liquid

Finely dice onion and garlic. Heat a heavy-bottom pot on medium for 5 minutes. Add oil and half the butter. Add onion and garlic along with thyme sprigs. Cook until onions are translucent. While cooking, bring vegetable stock to a boil, and turn heat down to a simmer. Once onions and garlic are translucent, add rice and cook for 2 minutes, ensuring that all rice is coated by oil and butter. Add wine and cook for an additional 5 minutes. The rice should start to stick to the bottom of the pot. While stirring, add ½ cup of vegetable stock. Continue to stir until all liquid has been absorbed into rice. Add another ½ cup of stock and continue the process until all rice is cooked. Place aside until ready to serve. Before serving, fi nish with the mushroom liquid, butter, chives, and cheese. Adjust seasoning.

A classic risotto is as comforting as a sturdy umbrella in Vancouver.

Once you feel confi dent making a basic risotto, you can expand your ideas to create and pair new fl avours. At Beachside Forno, executive chef Jason Harris pairs a classic risotto with warm fall fl avours. To cut through the richness of the risotto, the Ambleside bistro fi nishes the dish with a few slivers of pickled shallots. Try to make the risotto as close to service time as possible. The longer the rice sits cooked, the longer it will absorb all the liquid and become overcooked. Remember a good rule of thumb: if you won’t drink the wine, don’t cook with it.

Party WineSparklingCarrion, ‘Cristalino’ Brut nature Cava DO, Spain $12.99It’s important to have a steady supply of bubbles during the festive season but nothing headache inducing. Thank you Spain for making inexpensive sparklers without sacrificing character or quality. Cristalino is crisp and citrusy and its classic packaging will make people think you spent more.

White2010 Jean Jean, ‘Ormarine’ picpoul de pinet, Coteaux du languedoc aOC, France $13.99Why not introduce something new to your friends? The rarely seen Southern French white grape varietal Picpoul crafts a wine packed with lime and lemon zest. Excellent on its own or with salad, seafood and snacks of all kinds. Beware: dangerously easy to drink.

reD2010 Montes, Classic Series, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colchagua Valley, Chile, $13.99Montes Cab is a consistent performer but after trying the most recent release we couldn’t stop ourselves from singing its praises once again. With characteristic cassis notes, dark chocolate and a touch of mint this Chilean champion packs a lot in at a very modest price.

hether you’re the host or the guest, the wine you select helps set the tone. It’s just as important as choosing the menu, the

music, your outfit and guest list. Unique wines that charm the crowd go a long way to making a holiday gathering successful.

When your social calendar is packed with parties, how can you afford to splurge every time? Set a maximum (ours is $15) and stick to it. There are plenty of well priced wines that over deliver for the money. Instead of being seen as cheap, you’ll be congratulated for being savvy. Our picks are crowd-pleasing and food friendly but just as easy to drink on their own.

Christmas supper and fancier dinner parties are suitable occasions to stray from your everyday drinking budget. Treat yourself and guests by splurging on that special bottle. Out of town visitors will appreciate something from B.C. and any discerning local should be thrilled to try the latest from our own vineyards. Wherever the wine is from, aromatic and fruity whites as well as lighter bodied reds with soft tannin, bright fruit and good acidity are the most successful choices with the turkey feast. Not everyone is sticking to tradition these days though, so have a fuller bodied red on hand for less conventional but winter weather fare.

Dinner WineWhite2010 Bartier Brothers, ‘the Cowboy,’ Okanagan Valley VQa, BC $26-$29Celebrated local winemaker, Michael Bartier has just launch his own label and we say hooray! The Cowboy is a 50/50 blend with Sauvignon Blanc bringing lively acidity and tropical fruit to the richer and aromatic Schonberger grape. Fresh, fragrant and mouth-filling, it is just what your turkey feast is begging for.

reDS2008 Château labrande, Malbec, Cahors aOC, France, $19.99Think Malbec, think Argentina? Absolutely! But this grape originally came from France. Your friends will think you’re cutting edge when you introduce them to Malbec from the region of Cahors. Expect a savoury wine with pronounced earthy and cassis notes. Fantastic match when meat pie makes it to the dinner table.

2009 Faiveley, Mercurey aOC, France $28.99Pinot Noir is always a winner with traditional Christmas dinner. Make your guest feel special and choose one from Burgundy, Pinot’s highly lauded homeland. The 2009 vintage is fantastic and this Mercurey offers delicious drinking at an affordable price. Elegant and focused red fruit with a hint of spice.

Michaela and Michelle will decant more perfect pairings at Cheers to the Holidays, their December monthly tasting. Details at housewine.ca.

Comprehensive Dental CareAre you waiting for things to fall apart?

Do you worry that you may lose your teeth some day, and if so,are you doing everything you can to prevent it?There are two approaches to oral care; the fi rst and most common approach, is waiting for the condition of your teeth to deteriorate until your comfort, function or appearance is compromised. The second approach is having regular check-ups in order to diagnose problems before they manifest. Our team at Westview Dental Clinic takes your care one step further by providing a program of proactive comprehensive dental care.

Dentistry is a science and long term treatment outcomes are generally predictable, providing certain parameters are controlled. Dr. Liebenberg has been offering proactive comprehensive dental healthcare for more than 25 years and his expertise allows him to anticipate the state of your teeth as you age. This forecast is based on your current oral health and the choices you make with regards to future dental care.

If you are curious about the concept of proactive comprehensive dental care, and the impact it can have on your long-term health, contact us to schedule a consultation and experience the difference.
