EXALTED RULER -

Greetings my brothers and sisters, What a great time to be an Elk! As a growing organization "WE" California-Hawaii Elks Asso-ciation set the bar for initiating the new mem-bers during the last fraternal year. CHEA/CHEMPI bright is just shy of 4 million to

help the children walk, see and play! We can also sign up new members via electronic devices such as computers, tablets and cell phones, yep! you heard that right!!! You can do a new member application on your cell phone and send it right to the office. If you have not checked out the ELKS.ORG website, go sign up and browse around, there is so much to see and learn about the elks. The motto of this year’s CHEA convention is “take that extra step, move out of your comfort zone and go the extra step.” Great advice! I believe we all like our comfort zone and rarely venture out of it. I challenge every one of you to take that step! Let’s exemplify the virtues of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity, and become a volunteer, hold a door for someone, take a moment and say Hi to someone, simple acts of kindness might just change someone's day for the better. Keep your eye's peeled for events at your Lodge. On the 2nd and 4th Tuesday's come on down for steak dinner, we have a new crew that is making an incredible meal! On August 17th come on down to the lodge for a “Street BBQ”. Tickets will be available very soon! If you have any social media accounts, look at ours. We try to post daily about what is on tap at your Lodge, so you can come on down and have some fun! I was recently asked this question, and I will share it here. “Who is the most important person in the Lodge.” I'll give you a hint, It's not the Exalted Ruler! That’s right, it is you the Members! You make this Lodge what it is. Without the members there is nothing... We all, as a group, make up this Lodge and we all as a group, can make it a great Lodge!!!

FLOWER FESTIVAL QUEEN CANDIDATE

FUNDRAISERS—

We’re done with this year’s Flower Festival Queen Candidate fundraisers and the fundraiser team would like to thank all the people who helped make this year’s Queen fundraisers so suc-cessful. Your support and generosity was much appreciated! Listed below are the highlights of this year’s fundraising events.

*Dessert Bars* – All the members and spouses who pro-vided the great deserts. So many of you all to mention, but y’all know who you are and we appreciate you! And to the table we call, “the Country Club Table” as these folks were such dependable and loyal supporters! Thank you! *Hobo Night *– Thanks to Debbie Evans and her team for donating their proceeds to the Queens fund. *Saturday Hot Dogs *– Thanks to Victor Gonzales and his team for their donations from the hot dog sales. *The Wine and Design Afternoon* – Thank you to Debra Gonzales and her crew at the lodge for helping make this a fun and profitable event. *The Queen’s BBQ* – Big thank you to Joe Gonzales and Pierre Chaldu and their team for coordinating this successful BBQ! *The Queen’s Races* – A wonderful thank you to Brid-get, Patricia and Memo for making us such a super Chile Verde meal. SECRETARY

Just like June, July is going to be a busy month for Lompoc Elks. Hope everyone has a great 4

th of July. Exalted Ruler Da-

vid Oliveira and I will be attending Grand Lodge Convention in Saint Louis, Missouri. This will be an exciting convention for Cali-

fornia Elks. Our Past President Robert Duitsman will be installed as Grand Exalted Ruler. This may not happen again for a very long time. Also, Past Association Vice President Jay Dupler will be installed and District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. We will have a report for the members after we return. In the past we have cancelled the first Lodge meeting in July but this year your Leading Knight Debbie Evans will step up as Exalted Ruler.

We are slowly getting delinquent dues in from our mem-bers. As of June 11, 2019, we were down to 132, which is good but still way too many. Thank you to all mem-bers that have recently renewed their membership. There is a lot of emphasis on Lapsation from Grand Lodge and the State to reduce the delinquency rate. We need your help in getting the rest of the delinquent mem-bers to pay their dues. We have sent out delinquent dues letters and we are calling them.

I would like to talk a little about Lodge committees and committee chairman. All of the good things that Lompoc Elks do is only possible through the hard working com-mittee chairmen. However, we do have a problem en-listing members to serve on committees and more im-portantly to be the Chairman. I have noticed that many of the new members have demonstrated an interest in becoming involved with a committee but we still have key committees that need help. The Lodge would like to say thank you for all the hard work by sponsoring a Committee Chairman Appreciation Night on July 24, 2019. If you are a Committee Chairman you will be in-vited for a free dinner.

GREETINGS FROM YOUR ELKS CLUB

MANAGER It is wonderful watching so many families attend our meals and events. With summer here, I’m sure there will be even more fami-ly visiting and enjoying our facilities. Let me take a moment to remind everyone that children are welcome in the Lounge until the strike of 9:30 p.m. After that, the

Lounge becomes a 21 and over area. We hope to see everyone with their families having fun and enjoying the Lodge Club. If you have any sugges-tions for events or activities, please let us know. This month’s survey: Would you pay $50 a ticket for a Murder Mystery Dinner? Tri-tip, beans, bread and des-sert included.

TIM JAEGER California-Hawaii Elks Association President 2019-2020

Tim Jaeger was born in Pierre, SD, and later moved to Geddes, SD where he attended elemen-

tary and high school, all in one building. Tim later attended the University of South Dakota in

Vermillion, earning a BS in Business Administration in 1980, a Master of Professional Account-

ancy in 1982 and falling in love, at first sight, with his wife Sandy sometime in late 1981.

Tim joined Sioux Falls Elks Lodge #262 in 1985. After moving to California, Tim transferred to

Petaluma Elks Lodge #901, serving in several roles including Exalted Ruler in 20072008. He

has been named both elk and officer of the year. He was Association Vice-President in 2010-

2011 during the presidency of Hugh Scanlon and his wife Dale. He has served on several dis-

trict committees and served as the CHEA Drug Awareness Chair from 2011-2013. He served

as an appointed advisor to the Napa Lodge from 2011-2013 and ultimately transferred to Napa

Lodge #832. He also served on the CHEA Board of Trustees from 2014-2017, he served as the CHEA 1st Vice

President in 2018-2019.

On the Grand Lodge level, he served as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler in 2013-2014. He has served as an

Assistant Director of the Elks National Drug Awareness Program since 2014 and continues to assist in the Drug

Awareness program including representing the national program at joint events with the DEA and supporting state

chairpersons nationwide.

For over thirty-five years Tim has worked as a CPA, performed several permanent and interim roles including serv-

ing as President, CFO, CEO, and CAO of private organizations and public reporting companies. Tim is the Presi-

dent and owner of CXO Consulting and regularly serves as an independent member of various company Board of

Directors, typically serving on the Audit Committee.

Tim is a past member of the Petaluma Chamber of Commerce, has served as a Little League Baseball Coach,

Boys and Girls Club Basketball Coach, Casa Grande HS Basketball Program Fundraising Chair, Casa Grande High

School Boosters Club member, St James Catholic Church Fundraising and "Giving Tree" Chair and Member of the

Knights of Columbus. He also is the founder of the Northbay chapter of the Parrotheads in Paradise.

Tim met the love of his life, Sandy, in 1981, and they married in 1984. They have three children including: Ben, his

wife Whitney and their two children Logan and Conner, who live in Moraga, CA.; Brittany and Tyler who live in Tam-

pa and were married in February of this year; and Lizzie, a proud Napa Elk member, who lives and works in San

Francisco, CA.

Tim enjoys sports, especially football including fantasy football, which he has been involved with since 1980, before

the internet made it easy to track scores. He has developed his BBQ skills while spending time in his outdoor man-

cave, while trying to avoid addressing the never-ending honey-do lists Sandy is very skilled at preparing. Sandy's

love for children led to a 25-year elementary teaching career including 10 years in administration working with the

California Beginning Teacher Program. She also enjoys reading, gardening, puttering around the house, spending

time with family and preparing honey-do lists for Tim.

Tim and Sandy are honored and excited to have the opportunity to serve as President and First Lady of the Califor-

nia-Hawaii Elks Association this year, and look forward to meeting and making friends during their travels while

talking about the slogan: “ELKS STEPPING UP TO A NEW AGE”

ELK OF THE YEAR West Central Coast District Association Vice- President, David Martin

David has been an active Elk member for the past twelve years, in the Atascadero Lodge #2733. David started his service in the Elks as Lectur-ing Knight, working his way to Exalted Ruler in 2011-2012, and repeating the position as Ex-alted Ruler in 2015-2016. He also served as Esquire (twice), Inner Guard and is currently going through the ranks of the Trustees.

During this time, David has served his Lodge as Chairman for Drug Awareness, Membership/Lapsation, Holiday Basket Program, PER’s Association and for the past three years had been the Ritual Coach for his Lodge. David has served as Vice-chairman and Chairman of Membership/Lapsation for the West Central Coast District for the past five years. David is the General Manager for a large Racing Quarter Horse Ranch in Atascadero, where he has been employed for the past 42 years. In his spare time, David enjoys working with wood and spending time outdoors with family and friends. David is honored to serve and represent our district as the West Central Coast Association Vice-President for the fraternal year of 2019-2020. He is looking for-ward to meeting and making new friends along the way and assist-ing them in keeping the WCCD moving ahead and staying strong.

Why apply for Elks Scholarships?

A case in point for this question is an eye-opener. It is important for Elks members to under-

stand how this can benefit our high school students.

Danan Pacheco has been a familiar name as the Scholarship Committee reviewed applica-

tions for several years. Danan made the effort to submit applications, obtain letters of recom-

mendation, and put in a great amount of work at school and in the community.

Danan was awarded Student of the Quarter throughout high school. The cash awards were small in

comparison to the amount of work it took to get $50. Many other excellent young men and women ap-

plied and the committee wishes all the applicants could be recognized and awarded. However, Danan

was always an all-star by the Scholarship Committee’s grading standards as we looked for well-rounded

candidates.

Danan was one of 4 students selected as a Student of the Year (2019) for our lodge. He received $1,000

and his hard work was paying off. In addition to this, Danan submitted his application online for the Most

Valuable Student Award. Danan was promoted through the District to the California State Level and

was awarded $800. This was a remarkable achievement. It should be noted that another Student of the

Quarter, Robyn Soh, was also a student of the year and award winner ($1,000) and a most valuable stu-

dent at State Level received $800.

The larger accomplishment for Danan was the National Legacy Scholarship. 300 awards are given at

this level and Danan will receive the 4-year $4,000 award. It should be noted that other Lompoc stu-

dents have received this award in the past.

It is easy to do the math! The Elks (our lodge and online) offer so many wonderful opportunities for young

men and women. When you get a chance, please go online to Elks.org/scholarships. The scholarships

include: Emergency Educational Grants, Vocational Grants, and Disability Grants to name a few. It is

well worth our time to spread the word!

NATIONAL VETERANS SERVICE REPORT

I am lost for words because I’ve just lost a very dear friend, Tony Adams, so I will

make this report short.

As most of you know we bring our VETS from the Convalescent Care Center to our Lodge for a Fish and Chips luncheon every month, I am always in need of help with this great program. From 11:00 am to 1:30 pm Third Friday of each month.

Aluminum cans are always needed and I continue to laminate cards and pictures up to 8” x 10”.

No Chinese Proverb this month.

Please keep Tony and his family in your prayers.

The Origin of “The Toast” – taken from the Grand Lodge archives

Regarding the Elks' 11 O’clock Toast and its origin, we must go back long before the BPOE came into existence. One of the main contributions of Charles Richardson (stage name of Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian and founder of the American branch of the Jolly Corks) was to deliver into the hands of newborn Elks the rituals and traditions of a fraternal organization started in England around 1010 A.D., the Royal and Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, to which he belonged prior to coming to New York. The RAOB, or Buffaloes as we shall henceforth refer to them, also practiced an 11 o'clock toast in remembrance of the Battle of Hastings in October of 1066. Following his victory, William of Normandy imported a set of rules, both martial and civil in nature, to keep control of a seething Norman-Saxon population which was always on the edge of a revolution. Among those rules was a curfew law requiring all watch fires, bonfires (basically all lights controlled by private citi-zens that could serve as signals) to be extinguished at 11 each night. From strategically placed watchtowers that also served as early fire-alarm posts, the call would go out to douse or shutter all lights and bank all fires. This also served to discourage secret and treasonous meetings, as chimney sparks stood out against the black sky. A person away from his home and out on the darkened streets, when all doors were barred for the night, risked great peril from either evildoers or patrolling militia. The hour of 11 quickly acquired a somber meaning, and in the centuries that followed, became the synonym throughout Europe for someone on his deathbed or about to go into battle: i.e. “His family gathered about his bed at the 11th hour," or "The troops in the trenches hastily wrote notes to their families as the 11th hour approached when they must charge over the top.” Thus, when the 15 Jolly Corks (of whom seven were not native-born Americans) voted on February 16, 1868, to start a more formal and official organization, they were already aware of an almost universally prevalent sentiment about the mystic and haunting aura connected with the nightly hour of 11, and it took no great eloquence by Vivian to establish a ritual toast similar to that of the Buffaloes at the next-to-last hour each day. The great variety of 11 O’clock Toasts, including the Jolly Corks Toast, makes it clear that there was no fixed and official version until 1906-10. Given our theatrical origins, it was almost mandatory that the pre-1900 Elks would be expected to compose a beautiful toast extemporaneously at will. Regardless of the form, however, the custom is as old as the Elks.

The Original Jolly Corks Toast: “Now is the hour when Elkdom’s tower Is darkened by the shroud of night. And father time on his silver chime Tolls off each moment’s flight. In Cloistered halls each Elk recalls His brothers where’er they be, And traces their faces to well-known places In the annals of memory. Whether they be on the boundless sea With the breakers of death ahead. Whate’er their fate may be Wherever they are be it near or far They are thinking of you and me. So, drink from the fountain of fellowship To the brother that clasped your hand And wrote your worth in the rock of earth And your faults upon the sand.”
