Many will be shocked to fimd
When the day of judgment nears,
That there is a SPECIAL place in heaven
Set aside for VOLUNTEERS’
Furnished with big recliners.
Satin couches and foot stools,
Where there’s no committee chairman,
No group leaders or car pools.
No eager team that needs a coach,
There will be nothing to staple
Not one thing to cut, fold or mail.
Telephone lists will he outlawed,
But a finger snap will bring
Cool drinks and gourmet dinners
And rare feasts fit for Queen or King
You ask who will serve these privileged few
And work for all their worth?
Why all those who Reaped the Benefits
And NOT ONCE volunteered on Earth!
It is my pleasure to select our photographer, Pete
Cole as the Elk of the Month. He is always available to
photograph any and all functions of the Lodge. His
pictures are always outstanding and contribute im-
mensely to the image of the Lodge in our community

MARCH 2014 LOMPOC ELKS LODGE PAGE 3
Greetings All,
It's March, and I would like
to encourage all committee
chairpersons to begin to think
of their budget for the coming
year.
Next month we will begin
to budget for the coming year.
It is most important that you
submit your budget for the
year.
Please put March 29th on your calendars! I would
like to invite all members, family and guests of members
to attend the Installation of Officers. This beautiful
ceremony will be held at 6:00 pm. Dinner in the Lodge
Room will follow the Installation. Entertainment will be
provided. Dress for the event will be Semi Formal.
Come, have a good time and support your lodge officers
as they begin their new year. Tickets will go on sale this
month at $18.00 per person.
Officers Appreciation will be the next day. Check
your calenders for details.
Also on the calendar, we have Karaoke on the 7th,
and the Queen’s Premier on March 15th.
I look forward to my new year as your Exalted Ruler.
Thank all of you who supported me in this decision
to continue as your ER.
Fraternally,
Fred J. Duffey
The Elks Lodge 2274 Street BBQ team will no lomger
be doing BBQ Fundraisers at the Walgreen Parking Lot.
Future Fundraising BBQ’s will be held at the Elks Lodge,
905 E Ocean Ave. For more information, please call the
Street BBQ Chairperson, Joe Gonzales at (805) 735-7081
Well, a new season of Lodge officers will be upon us soon.
I would like to take time to Thank this year’s officers for their
support. To the incoming officers, this should be a great year
for you.
Here is the update for the Hoop Shoot from the State
level (3rd level). Raya Gonzales (girls 8-9 yr old category)
came in 2nd place. This is a challenging event, and we
congratulate her and Thank her for a job well done. Thank
you to her family for taking the weekend to support her and
get her there. We look forward to seeing you again next
year.
I would also like to Thank everyone that has supported
me as the Youth Chairman over the past 5 years. I have met
a lot of great people, and the whole experience has made my
life better. It is with a lot of thought, that I have made the
decision that this is my last year. I will be stepping down as
the Chairman. I hope that someone will step up, and enjoy
the position as much as I have. I will still be involved to help
out, and continue to guide the new coordinators as they
come in. If anyone is interested in joining one of the events,
(Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot, Youth Week, Dictionaries or
Student of the month/year) please let me or one of the new
officers know. These programs are already set up, so you
don’t have to invent the wheel again. I look forward to
seeing you all in the lodge soon.
Tarry Hetzel, Youth Activities Chairman.
We held an unscheduled Spaghetti dinner at the lodge in
January. We were unable to contact as many members as
we hoped to. In an effort to reach as many members as
possible I’ve created this email account to help notify more
members when the need arises.
Please send an email address with your name to
[email protected], it’ll be kept in an Elks Email group so
I can notify you of any events or information that may not
have had time to be placed in the Elks Tale.
You can also write your name and email address on
paper, put it in the suggestion box which will be given to me.
Hey, no silly stuff now.
Your email address will not be shared with anyone.
Look forward to hearing from all of you.

PAGE 4 LOMPOC ELKS LODGE MARCH 2014
This is my last article of the year.
I guess I should look back at it and
see what I’ve done. I had better to
take the positive first and buoy
myself up a little. I’ve made it a
year; I should take credit for that
itself. See, optimism is key here. I
was afraid that when I agreed to be
an officer I may not be able to
complete the commitments required.
Let’s see, I went to almost all the
Tuesday meetings I was supposed to
go to and the ones I didn’t make
were not because I had something
better to do. I always found my sub and did not leave it for someone
else to find one. Also, I came in the correct uniform almost all the
time. I did come in my tux once on a green shirt night. I didn’t even
get the car parked in the Elks lot before the heads were shaking and
people were pointing at me. Gosh you’d think I’d arrived naked. I
did manage to fly home and change to the green shirt in time for the
meeting so that one doesn’t even really count. I also made it through
ritual and didn’t embarrass the Lompoc Elks or myself. I made it
through my kitchen crews without burning the Elks down (and I
actually wrote this before someone else almost did). I turned my
monthly article in on time or early every month. Some think it is
easier just to go back into the archives and pull an old one but I
wrote my own each month (as if someone might confuse that, duh,
obviously). I even managed to get through the Board of Director
meetings and Committee meetings without getting fired. I felt like
I fell into a Rabbit hole most of the time. I came out of the meetings
dazed and confused, just like Alice, and I wasn’t in wonderland
either. All in all I feel good about those because I never hesitated to
say what I thought was the right thing to do. I always voted by what
I thought was the right thing to do and was not afraid to stand alone
on a vote.
That being said, after the positives I have to say that I realize I’m
hanging on by my fingernails trying to meet the mandatory
requirements, let alone doing something extra. I see the same
handful of people bearing the whole load of the work. The same
ones day after day. They must be exhausted from all the time they
volunteer. The people, who keep everything functioning, put in an
incredible amount of time. I really wish I could have put more time
in. I wish I had just a little more time. I wish I could come in the
mornings and help. I wish I could volunteer more for events. I wish
I could go to visit the other lodges and meet their officers. I wish, I
wish, I wish (all this time and I finally know what I want to be when
I grow up. I want to be retired).
When I joined this club I told the interviewer that I wanted to
make a difference and have input and decide in the course of our
club. Hmph! I feel guilty! There I’ve said it! I wanted to do more
but did not have more to give. My dad always says “good help is
hard to find” (usually when I don’t want to do some cockamamie
maintenance project like hanging bird houses on the eucalyptus trees
40 feet up or building a patio roof with a – let’s just say less than
adequate slope – that one didn’t turn out well at all). Inside I wanted
to volunteer more but it just didn’t happen. Good volunteers are
hard to find too. I think there is a lot of room for improvement there
for me. I’m hoping if I can come back next year I will be able to do
more. Nice try though because I still won’t be retired! On top of
that - my purple pig is only half full.
So my thanks this year go out to Sylvia Boynton and John Larson
for always helping me and making it seem like a small thing that was
no trouble for them (sometimes Sylvia looked at my blank face and
must have wanted to shake her head). Thanks to Susan Scanlan for
taking my kitchen mistakes in stride and allowing me to learn as
went along (very sorry about the butcher knife in the dishwasher’s
sink – oops). Thanks to Dean Kayes and Joe Poole for their
leadership ensuring I was prepared for the ritual competition. They
not only refused to allow me to fall on my face, but really made me
look good. Thanks to Ann Clark and Katie Holmes for donating
their community service match from their company ($500 ea) to ENF
(sort of extra insurance against failure with my first fund raiser).
And a Special thanks to Ann Clark, Laury Hayes and Susie Cromp
for being the driving force (or slave drivers) behind making sure
everything I attempted was accomplished.
And no ---I didn’t say I came to the Elks naked!

Hi,
Kim Bish just sent me the results of the State MVS
competition (attached). We had TWO forwarded to the Elks
National Foundation (ENF) for national competition.
Thanks to all who have supported the scholarship
program.
Wallace Rogers, Lompoc Elks Scholarship Committee
Special congratulations to Wallace Rogers of Lompoc
Lodge, Thom Dimmit of SLO, and Rick Herrera of Thousand

This last year has been a
great one for me. I have
enjoyed being a Lodge Officer
again. We have accomplished
many things as a Lodge and it
has been my pleasure to have
had the opportunity to be of
service once again. Thanks for
all the support that so many
have shown the works of the
Lodge this last year. I hope to
see you around the Lodge or at
a meeting.

If you are going to stand on thin ice, you might aswell dance.Being right doesn’t count until the right people knowyou’re rightCommittee work is like a soft chair – easy to getinto but hard to get out of.There are two ways to handle a woman, andnobody knows either of them.If people listened to themselves more often, theywould talk less.Management is the art of getting other people to doall the work. There is no job so simple that it cannot be donewrong. The person who marries for money usually earnsevery penny of it.Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run overif you just sit there.People who know the least always argue the most.It is especially hard to work for money you’vealready spent for something you didn’t need. One of the hardest decisions in life is when to startmiddle age.Age doesn’t always bring wisdom. Sometimes agecomes alone.

Have you received your dues
notice for the 2014-2015 Lodge year?
If you haven’t please contact my
office (736-8866) and let us know so
we can send you another dues notice,
Is your address correct? We will be
mailing out your new membership
cards in March. If you haven’t
received it by March 15, please
contact my office. The lodge door
locks will be changed on April 1, 2014.
We are still having problems with
new members making the Orientation
meeting before Initiation. This is a
mandatory meeting for membership. Proposers are reminded,
again, that it is part of their obligation to insure any new member
they are proposing goes to this meeting.
I would like to thank our members, Duane Schuyler, Red
Hunking, Don McIntyre for installing the new TV at the bar, hanging
the TV speakers on the wail and installing the new lights in the
Lounge. Phil Hager, Sylvia Boynton and Jimmy McIntyre also
assisted on the lights installation. Our Lounge improvements have
been long in getting done. It is gratifying that we have members
willing to help in these projects. If you see any of these members
let them know you appreciate their efforts. There are a lot of
projects that are done in the Lodge without anyone acknowledging
them. If you know of any of these projects, let me know so I can
acknowledge their efforts.
We, as members, need to thank some of the Committees that
have donated funds to the Lodge for improvements. The Elks of the
Year, Woodchuckers, Ladies Auxiliary, Street BBQ and the Can &
Bottle Recyclers are a few of the groups that have over the years
contributed to the Lodge improvements. I probably have forgotten
some groups so thank you to them also. We also have a lot of
members that donate time to do things to improve the Lodge that
go unnoticed. The Lodge Trustees also have been involved in many
projects around the Lodge.
Due to a scheduling conflict, Easter Sunday Brunch
on April 20th, will be held in the lounge from 9:30 am to
12:00 noon.
Sorry for the Inconvenience.
\
It is almost SPRING.
Our Ladies Auxiliary began the meeting with Gloria Shanks from
the Community Women’s Club showing us an Easter basket they
made for the Ladies at the Convalescent Care Center. She wanted to
know if we would help fill the basket. We voted to donate $100.00
for them to buy some supplies.
We extended our sincere sympathy to Anna Ramroth on the loss
of her husband.
PER Bob Murray has condescended to be the Liaison for the
Ladies Auxiliary. Thank you Bob.
Our next Ladies Auxiliary meeting will be March 5 at 6:45 PM.
On Wednesday, March 19 we will have the Dessert Bar and
Opportunity Drawing. NOTE: Beginning in April we will have the
Dessert Bar and Opportunity Drawing on the third Wednesday of the
month (New Members Orientation).
Coming Events:
March 21, Vets Push
March 29, Lodge Officer Installation and Dinner
March 30 at 3:00 PM will be the ER Appreciation Day
April 2 will he the Ladies Auxiliary meeting
April 4 we will host the ladies from the Convalescent Care for
lunch.
April 13. at 3:00 PM will be the Ladies Social and Installation of
new Officers
Last but not least; REMEMBER our RUMMAGE SALE will be
coming up July 12, 2014. We will need some Baked goodies as they
sell very well for us.
HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY ONE AND ALL.
Marilyn Hains, Elks Ladies Auxiliary Publicity Chairman
We will be starting a new Elks Year soon. Which means we will
have elected new Officers and appointed some new Committee
Chairpersons. I am running for Tiler again and I volunteered to
continue as Veterans Chairperson.
Our Veterans Program is doing very well due to all your great
help. To raise funds for this program I still laminate cards and
documents that you may want to preserve. Large (8 x 12) or small
still only one dollar. I am also recycling aluminum cans. Bring them
to the Lodge, or if you can’t let me know nd I will pick them up at
your home.
Remember every third Friday of each month we bring the
Veterans from the Convalescent Care Center to the Lodge for a Fish
and Chips Luncheon. For this I always need help. This month it will
be on the 23rd. Take a couple of hours out of your day to assist
these Veterans. I guarantee you will enjoy the experience.
Fraternally,
J P Hurd, Vets Chairperson
LODGE PIN NIGHTwill be on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the Lodge meeting that

FOR ALL THOSE BORN
BEFORE 1945
We were born before television, before penicillin, before
polio shots, frozen foods; Xerox, plastic, contact lenses,
Frisbees and the PILL. We were before radar, credit cards,
split atoms, laser beams and ballpoint pens. Before
panty-hose, dishwashers, clothes dryers, electric blankets, air
conditioners, drip-dry clothes...and before man walked on the
moon.
We got married first and then lived together. How quaint
can you be? In our time, closets were for clothes; not for
“coming out of”. Bunnies were small rabbits, and rabbits
were not Volkswagens. Designer Jeans were scheming girls
named Jean, and having a meaningful relationship meant
getting along with our cousins.
We thought fast food was what you ate during Lent, and
Outer Space was the back of the Riviera Theatre. We were
before house husbands, gay rights, computer dating, dual
careers and commuter marriages. We were before day-care
centers, group therapy and nursing homes. We never heard of
FM radio, tape decks, electronic typewriters, artificial hearts,
word processors, yogurt and guys wearing earrings. For us,
time-sharing meant togetherness...not computers or
condominiums. A chip meant a piece of wood. Hardware
meant hardware, and software wasn’t even a word.
Back then, “Made in Japan” meant junk and the term
“making out” referred to how you did on your exam. Pizzas,
McDonalds and Instant coffees were unheard of. We hit the
scene where there were 5 and 10 cent stores, where you
bought things for five and ten cents. Sanders or Wilsons sold
ice cream cones for a nickel or a dime. For one nickel you
could ride a street car, make a phone call, buy a Pepsi or
enough Stamps to mail one letter and Two postcards. You
could buy a new Chevy coupe for $600...but who could afford
one? A pity too, because gas was 11 cents a gallon!
In our day, grass was mowed, COKE was a cold drink and
POT was something you cooked in. ROCK MUSIC was a
Grandma’s lullaby and AIDS were helpers in the Principal’s
office. We were certainly not before the difference between
the sexes was discovered, but we were surely before the sex
change. We made do with what we had. And we were the
last generation that was so dumb to think you needed a
husband to have a baby.
No wonder we are so confused and there is such a
generation gap today.
But, WE SURVIVED!!! What better reason to
celebrate?
