MondayChanging the CultureBefore Dayton Moore’s first season as general manager of the Kansas City Royals, the team had three consecutive 100-loss seasons. Moore, who formerly served as the Atlanta Braves’ assistant general manager, eventually saw the Royals to back-to-back World Series appearances, culminating in a 2015 World Series championship. Moore talks about his experiences in the front offices of two of baseball’s most storied teams and how the skills he learned can be applied to corporate America.

The Captain’s SeatDavid Congdon, who ascended to the top role at Old Dominion Freight Line in January 2008, has helped the company emerge successfully from the downturn. As he has confronted various trucking challenges, Congdon has gained valuable insights into the trucking industry. During his presentation, Congdon will speak to current industry trends and address the road ahead in 2017.

The Changing Role of IntermodalNorth American railroads continue to pour a lot of hard-earned money and sweat into new infrastructure, technology and labor to meet intermodal’s high expectations. Join CSX president Clarence Gooden and discuss how Class I railroads are responding to changing market and product mixes – both commercially and operationally.

The Retailer’s Need for SpeedAs more consumers elect for ‘click-to-buy’ shopping, retailers are forced to demand faster, better service. From visibility to last mile, what are the newest and biggest challenges facing virtual retailers? Join our panel of leading retail experts from AWESOME as we lay out the retailer’s needs to grow the omni-channel experience.

Global Economic Update with Dr. DonA long-standing tradition, ‘Around the Globe with Dr. Don’ is a session that doesn’t disappoint. Join Dr. Don

Ratajczak, one of the most-respected economic forecasters of our time, as he shares his insights on the critical issues and trends directly impacting trade and transportation. From global economic challenges to manufacturing and housing starts, Dr. Ratajczak takes us around the globe in 45 minutes.

US Financial Update with Ben HartfordIn 2016, the U.S. saw a rising improving job market, a lower debt burden and falling oil prices, which combined to improve transportation’s outlook. China’s ongoing deceleration revealed a slowdown in foreign market growth, and this, in turn, hampered greater growth in the U.S. economy. How do these global economic challenges truly impact U.S. transportation? R.W. Baird’s Ben Hartford takes a look back at an eventful 2016 and looks ahead to 2017.

Opening Day Reception As SMC³ opens Jump Start 2017, bask in the glory of America’s greatest pastime with a baseball-themed networking event. Monday’s reception will be full of fun surprises and special guests.

Embedded Analytics and Automatic DecisionsMost transportation management systems provide companies with business intelligence in the form of KPIs. Join MercuryGate to explore the impact and strategic benefits of embedding the business intelligence into the operational processes of transportation management systems to make routine decision-making automatic.

Inking Big-time Deals in TMSIn 2016, a flurry of unprecedented deals involving private-equity investment firms and TMS providers dominated headlines and boardroom discussions. What’s driving the investment? Will the momentum carry over into 2017? Join a leading financial expert as we explore how this is reshaping the marketplace.

Up to Speed: The Automated Vehicle & LogisticsWe’ve all heard about the Internet of Things and how mobile is driving an onslaught of big data for better decision making. We’re also seeing an explosion of advancements in Vehicle-to-Vehicle technologies that will one day allow for truck caravans or even driverless vehicles. Experts in automated vehicle development will explore advancements in new driving technologies.

On the Move: Advancements in Intermodal TechnologySince 1980, Class I railroads have earmarked more than $600 billion for capital expenditures and maintenance – that’s 40 cents out our every revenue dollar. One of the main reasons for this level of investment is to make intermodal a better choice for shippers. Join our industry expert as we explore new and emerging technological advancements for achieving greater intermodal efficiencies.

Several components of the supply chain are being disrupted by 3D printing, not the least of which is commercial logistics. Join Dan Grigoras, director of supply chain for Shapeways, the world’s leading online 3D printing platform, as he analyzes how the technology got to where it is today and the broader implications on the supply chain.

Many global businesses still consider supply chain design a sporadic event, but this results in protracted project timeframes and short-sighted results. Savvy companies are bringing supply chain design in-house for continuous

Breakouts Defined

Elevating Supply Chain Design

Page 10: LOGISTICS TECHNOLOGY SUMMIT

improvement and innovation. Join Llamasoft’s Jeff Metersky as he explores elevating supply chain design from an ad-hoc project to a core business process.

From increased data and integrated communication to real-time analytics, cloud-based solutions are the supply chain’s biggest game changing opportunity. An expert in cloud-based software will discuss the current state of advanced supply chain technology and what’s possible today (and tomorrow) through cloud-based solution.

Just as with remodeling and staging a home, there are short-term and long-term decisions a company can make to increase the likelihood of a sale. Staging a business is something that can take years, but every owner should be doing it on some level. Experts from Arnall Golden Gregory will share common mistakes and cost-saving tips.

The portion of transit from the delivery center to the customer’s door continues to garner attention. The final-mile equation is now a perennial hot topic, and carriers, 3Pls, and final-mile servicers want to know how to increase optimization. A speaker from CLDA will examine the final-mile process and how lessons from verticals like “white glove” delivery may help in e-commerce and home delivery.

It seems new laws and new financial burdens are hitting carriers from every direction, and there’s no sign of Washington letting up. Join U.S. regulatory and governmental relations expert Randy Mullett to discuss the impact of recent rulings from the 3PL and carrier perspective.

A greater demand for operation efficiency, speed and insight reverberates through the supply chain. What do industry insiders need to know to stay ahead of the curve? For both experienced users and first-time buyers, this session will provide critical insight on the current and emerging technologies redefining the value of automated dimension-weigh-scan (DWS) solutions.

Transportation companies rely on data analytics to enhance operations. Considerable amounts of data regarding operations, customers and other third parties are amassed daily. Data management issues affect businesses of all sizes and across all industries. Join a data management and cybersecurity expert from Smith Moore Leatherwood and review how companies can protect valuable data and what to do in the event of a data breach.

Transportation management systems help reduce freight spend and manage various transportation modes. But it can be hard to find a solution for parcel shipments due to the limitations of some systems. Join our TMS expert and see how the “right” best of breed TMS can be used for high-volume parcel execution.

Route optimization tools help reduce transportation costs, fleet size, manpower and dispatch problems. With so many options, but not a lot of clarity, how do carriers begin the process of evaluating all the choices? An expert in routing optimization solutions will explore best practices for product selection.

As density costing continues to gain ground in the LTL world, some see the classification system as on its way out. With a number of U.S. transportation professionals predicting a shift to greater use of density-based costing, NMFC expert Dr. Don Newell will highlight the key differences in methodology between density-based and classification costing.

Carriers serving areas with large differences between inbound and outbound freight need costing tools that properly account for this imbalance. Bill Shults of TCG will explore carrier challenges for developing accurate costs, including identifying the difference between “real” empty capacity and “effective” empties.

With all the changes, so what for our business?

Implementing a dynamic, data-driven ratings system has been an FMCSA priority since the launch of the CSA in late 2010. In early 2016, the agency instituted a proposed rule seeking to eliminate the present three-tiered rating system with a single rating of “unfit.” A panel of legal experts will challenge the validity and explore the impact and liability of “safety fitness determination.”

With every advance in technology comes a change in how shippers, 3PLs, carriers and other industry players talk to one another. Application Programing Interface communication has been used by some industry trade groups for nearly a decade, but recent market pressures have brought new focus to API messaging as a replacement for EDI dispatches. In this session, industry experts will discuss API advances and why large shippers still rely on EDI.

In recent years, claims against brokers in catastrophic accident cases have risen. These negligence claims involve unique legal issues and defenses that can be raised. Smith Moore Leatherwood attorney Fred Marcinak has handled some of the most serious and noteworthy broker liability cases in the country, including the first known case to raise federal preemption as a defense to these claims.

The supply chain industry generates and transmits enormous volumes of data. These data points are changing almost every aspect of how the supply chain operates. Service providers that optimize the overflowing amount of data produced by the Internet of Things will become industry leaders.

WednesdayThe Economic Case for Revitalizing America’s Growth through InfrastructureAging U.S. infrastructure combined with antiquated policies is placing the U.S. on a course toward losing influence both economically and politically. But with a few key changes, the economic story could shift. Join this industry expert as he makes the case for revitalizing U.S. infrastructure.
