Global Positioning System: a navigationalsystem involving satellites and computersthat can determine the latitude and

longitude of a receiver on Earth bycomputing the time difference for signalsfrom different satellites to reach thereceiver

12 stationary satellites in three layers, fourin each orbiting the earth.

Determine the latitude and longitude to an

accuracy of one meter.Once position of vehicle is known, it can be

    transmitted to other Centre .

The transmission Centre will be a mobiletelephone or internet.

In GPS, a voice-over facility for the driverto speak and hear instruction, and LCD,

    with keyboard are available.

A geographic information system (GIS),or geographical information system, is anysystem that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that are linkedto location.

  • 7/29/2019 TECHNOLOGY IN LOGISTICS

    17/30

GIS consist of software tools for

the visualization of spatialfeature and database relatingto geography.

    Data relating to the specific

location of an entity on theearth are stored in database.

GIS then integrates the differenttypes of data in the databases tocreate a detailed, clearvisualization of data relating tothat entity.

Bar Coding is a series of parallel vertical lines(bars and space), that can be read by bar codescanners.

It is used worldwide as part of product

packages, as price tags, carton labels, oninvoices even in credit card bills and when it isread by scanners, a wealth of data is madeavailable at the users

The bar code become unique and universal and

can be recognized anywhere in the world.

Bar Codes are of two types:

    a. Linear barcode

    b. 2D barcode A linear bar code consists of vertical black lines and

white spaces that carry data. Linear bar codes areinterpreted using software and special devices such

    as laser scanners.

2 Dimensional Bar Codes use similar technology aslinear bar codes but carry about 100 times more

    data

They also have an additional feature that allowsthe bar code to be read even when part of it

    has been damaged or blurred.

Radio frequency identification (RFID)technology provides a means of automaticidentification.

It is already widely used in animal tagging andelectronic payment, such as Transport forLondon Oyster Cards.

Many other potential applications such asimproving supply chain efficiency and reducingcrime are being investigated.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is ageneric term that is used to describe a systemthat transmits the identity (in the form of aunique serial number) of an object or personwirelessly, using radio waves

There are two types of systems in RFID:

    a. Radio Frequency Tags (RFT)

    b. Memory Buttons

RFTs are used as an alternative to bar codesfor communicating inventory data to thereader via radio waves.

The reader is connected to the centralcomputer.

RFTs are pieces of silicon chip to store datain the microcircuit.

Data is loaded in encrypted form on "readonly" tags, which can be read but notaltered.

    Memory buttons contain an encapsulatedmicroprocessor.

The information is stored in the microprocessorencapsulated in the button that is attached tothe package.

The information can be read with an electronicdevice , without touching the package.

In the case of overseas dispatches, the memorybuttons are keyed in with information requiredby various agencies, such as customs, inspection, shipping and forwarding, which facilitatesspeedy clearing of the consignment.
