Rickenbacker International Airport’s advantage of rapidly handling the world’s largest aircraft proved especially valuable to Ford Motor Company recently as the automaker quickly resumed F-150 production following a massive fire at a parts supplier’s production plant in Michigan.

Within days of the fire, Ford and its partners recovered and transported critical equipment to other supplier facilities. However, one piece, an 87,000-pound die, required special attention. Ford transported the die to Rickenbacker International and chartered an Antonov An-124 to the United Kingdom, where it arrived at another production facility within hours. In the following weeks, Ford chartered additional flights from the U.K. to Rickenbacker to transport parts made in the U.K. to Ford’s U.S. assembly plants.

With a lot of work — and Rickenbacker’s clutch contributions — Ford resumed production of America’s best-selling vehicle in a little more than a week.

Upgraded animal transport facility enhances convenience, safety

International freight carriers continue to thrive at LCK

With the addition of regular flights by China Airlines, Rickenbacker International Airport now has six world-class international freight carriers that connect North America to air cargo hubs in Asia, Europe and the Middle East with nearly 20 weekly scheduled flights.

The growing global gateway also features scheduled domestic service from FedEx and UPS and on-demand charter service from numerous airlines.

Rickenbacker International Airport’s recently renovated animal transport facility maximizes operational efficiency and animal safety for the livestock logistics industry.

The extensive project made a wide range of upgrades, including 12 new animal stalls and renovations to restrooms and the on-site U.S. Department of Agriculture office.

The facility is closed to the elements, and is heated and ventilated. It can handle the loading and unloading of multiple vehicles. With the enhancements, Rickenbacker now has a USDA-certified Export Inspection Facility, which enabled the airport to become a permanent Port of Embarkation.

Please contact Bryan Schreiber at [email protected] or 614-409-3621 to learn more.

“Our self-sufficient, world-class facility benefits all those involved in the animal transport process. Our customers can handle the resting and inspection processes in a safe, quiet area that is minutes away from waiting aircraft. Most importantly, the animals are under less stress because they spend less time in transport with fewer stops along the way.”

– Joseph R. Nardone, C.M., President & CEO Columbus Regional Airport Authority

Thanks to Rickenbacker International Airport’s unparalleled speed, the first Ford F-150 rolls off the company’s assembly plant in Dearborn, Mich., after a fire at a separate supplier facility shuttered F-150 production for more than a week.

Ford transported a critical, 87,000-pound piece of equipment from Michigan to the United Kingdom in hours by chartering an Antonov An-124 from Rickenbacker International Airport.
