What You Need to Know Before Putting the Boat in the Water Boat Safety Requirements as Required by South Carolina State Law

Speed: Boats may not operate over idle within 50ft of an anchored vessel, dock or a person in the water.

Personal Floatation Device (PFD): All boats must have a US Coast Guard approved PFD for each per-son on board a boat less than 16ft in length. In addition, boats longer than 16ft must carry a Type IV throwa-ble flotation device.

Portable Fire Extinguisher: One Coast Guard approved hand-held extinguisher must be aboard each boat less than 26ft long. Additional extinguishers are required for boats longer than 26ft.

Navigation Lights: Lights must be on between official sunset and sunrise.

Sound: All boats less than 39ft must carry an efficient sound producing device. Vessels from 39ft. to 65ft must additionally carry a whistle and a bell.

Boating Course: Individuals under age 16 must complete an approved course by the SCDNR to operate a watercraft, unless accompanied by an adult age18 years or older.
