Lead mines in north Wales were oftensubjected to flooding as they weredeepened. Large steam engines, housedin stone built engine houses, were usedto dry out mines by pumping the water tosurface. During the nineteenth centurythere were six engine houses within ourparish. Four in Maeshafn, one at Pant duand one near the S-bend in the road toMaeshafn from Gwernymynydd. Only thelatter one remains to remind us of thelead mining industry that providedemployment for many men and boys inour parish. The Aberduna Engine Housewas built to a standard Cornish designand contained a steam engine with a 36inch diameter cylinder. It has been Listedby CADW as being of historic importanceand deserving protection. There are nowonly a handful of engine houses left innorth east Wales: three of which arewithin the Clwydian Range and DeeValley AONB.

Mining had started near Aberduna in1757. It was claimed that the mine wasvery productive in the early days but norecords survive to confirm this. Thesteam engine was installed sometimebetween 1840 and 1850 when wateringress became a problem as the minewas driven deeper. It was in almostcontinuous operation between 1872 and1884 during the most active period in themine's history. The mine finally closed in1884. The mine was not very productiveduring that period despite substantialinvestment and ran at a financial loss. The shareholders received no dividendsand the directors of the company no re-imbursement of their expenses.

The quarrying firm Hanson worked theadjacent limestone quarry up toDecember 2012. The wing walls of the

engine house, adjacent to the main mineshaft, were in an unsafe condition by then.In order to prevent them from collapsingduring the last phase of quarry workingHanson commissioned consolidation workon the building. This involved pinning partsof the building with steel anchors, replacingsome wooden lintels and re-pointing part ofthe building. Although further re-pointingneeds to be done the building is nowapparently sound.

The building has special local significancefor the following reason. The Maes y safnlead mine under Maeshafn village closedsuddenly in 1871 throwing several hundredmen out of work. The re-opening of theAberduna mine in 1872 providedemployment for about forty of these men. This is particularly significant because theFirst Great Depression of 1873-96 had adisastrous effect on lead and coal miningas well as on agriculture. This led to manyworkers in the district becoming destitute.

We, as a community, have helped out with the Mountain bike marathon over thelast 10 years and have received donations for the upkeep and maintenance of

our village playing field. I cannot thank you enough for this.Recently new swings and frames have been fitted in the park.

Without your time and effort this event would not be able to take place.

The organisers for the MTB marathon have been in talks with me over the lastfew months and had planned to ‘rest’ the Ruthin event this year. However, dueto the positive response and feedback from many of the riders about the Ruthin

event, they have decided to keep it in the calendar for 2016.This is brilliant news for our community and for the park.

In the past the LPFRA have received a donation of £2000 for volunteering ourtime, a sum I’m not sure we get from any other fundraising event.

The SCOTT UK mountain bike marathon - Ruthin will take place on the10th – 11th September 2016.

Please email [email protected] call 810461.

Summer hasarrived at last butevery time it rainsthere is still a dropin temperature. The good news isthat this has not

stopped the county from completingsome road resurfacing across theward. The section of the B5430 fromthe A494 to Valley Lodge has beentarred and chipped as has a sectionof the Graianrhyd to Eryrys road andthe A525 from the Plough to theCrown Inn. The village road inLlandegla has been completelyresurfaced with traffic cushions and anew 20 mph limit installed.

BT will be completing work in andaround Maeshafn in July and theroad from Llanferres to Maeshafn willbe closed from July 4th to July 7th.Local residents will receive furtherinformation in due course. Work hasalso started on repairing the bridgeinto Llanarmon Yn Ial.

The new bus timetables and serviceseem to have settled down but ifanyone is still encountering problemsplease let me know.

At the last Community Councilmeeting a Maeshafn resident raised aconcern about the poor state of thegreen triangle at the top of thevillage. It appears that county councilstaff deposited road salt there lastwinter and this has killed the grass. Ihave contacted highways and askedthem to look into the matter with aview to reinstating the grass.

I have recently returned from a weeksfamily holiday in Cornwall and it wasinteresting to note that the majority ofrural villages in Cornwall have largesigns on their Green BT Cabinetssaying that Super-fast Broad Bandhad arrived. Sadly we are still waitingfor the same signs to appear on themajority of our Green Cabinets. Asyou know BT have agreed to come toanother public meeting in the wardafter they pulled out of the last one. Iwill let you know where and whenthat is as soon as I have a date.

We are now in the last twelve monthsof this council and all authoritiesacross Wales ( counties andcommunities) are waiting to see whatthe Welsh Government have in storefor us when it comes to budgets andpossible reorganisation. The fact thatthe Labour Government is now aminority Government may tempertheir previous polices. The next fewmonths should be interesting.

Best wishes,Martyn

Some of you will remember mycontributions to the MADRANewsletter "A Walk on the Wild Side".Although not as mobile as I would liketo be, I can still watch wildlife from myparked car. It acts like a "hide" andbirds and animals approach withoutfear.

Spring is always a good time to watchhares, especially in the Broughton andHawarden area. The "boxing" wasoften mistaken for bucks proving theirdominance to win the affections of thefemale. This is not so, as it is thefemale fighting off the unwantedattention of the male until shebecomes receptive and ready to mate. She will be pursued by several males, but until she is ready she will avoid alltheir advances.

The young, usually two are bornafter thirty one days. The are bornabove ground in a shallow hollow orscrape known as a form. Unlike therabbit which is blind and naked whenborn, the young hares, known asleverets, have their eyes open and athick coat of fur. The mother willoften move one to another form toavoid predation and will visit them in

turn to suckle them. In between visits, they will keep perfectly still in thehope they won't be found by foxes andother predators. The cutting of grassfor silage takes a heavy toll on theyoung of hares . They thrive on theperimeters of air fields.

Spring is also a good time to sitquietly and see what migrant birds areback after their winter in sub SaharanAfrica. I did this last week with afriend of similar interests and countedthe house martins, the numbers aredown on last year and he is verydisappointed with the low numbers ofswallows and the fact that both thespotted and pied flycatchers have notyet appeared. The redstart is back, but has had to find another nest site ashis usual place in the chimney stackhas been taken by house sparrows.

The cuckoo made himself heard onthe 5th May and was calling from MoelFindeg. My daughter Jayne beat me toit this year, she was in the garden andcame in to get me when she heard himcalling. He called most of thefollowing two days. The "host" bird onMoel Findeg is the meadow pippit. Asit rises a couple of yards off the groundand hovers similar to the skylark iteasily falls prey to the sparrow hawkand merlin so its numbers are indecline. It would be a great loss if wewere to lose such a charming bird.

Update next month.
