So part of living life fully includes being aware of our surroundings which come from Gods great bounty. Another mistake we often make is thinking that our task is only to wait for God to give us something— that we should be passive about living our lives — waiting for something to happen to us. Sometimes were a little fearful of venturing out, even in doing the small things. I have read that the clause Do not be afraid.is written in the Bible 365 times. WOW! That s a daily reminder from God to live every day fearlessly. Perhaps its also a reminder that we should be so busy loving God, loving others and loving our lives that we have no time for regret, worry, or fear. The Scriptures tell us, God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and a sound mind.So as we Lifetimers seek to live life fully for the time God gives us, let us keep these two things in mind. Be attentive to and thankful for all the beauty our Lord has provided us, and be active in our pursuit of living life fully. Remember, This is the day which the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Ed Twedt

Dr. Ruth Berggren succeeded Dr. Abraham Verghese as director of the UT Health Science Center’s Center for Humanities and Ethics in 2007. Board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases, she has extensive experience in clinical AIDS and viral hepatitis care and research. She was serving at the New Orleans Charity Hospital when Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Refusing offers to be evacuated herself, she spent six days without electricity, clean water or proper bathroom facilities staying beside her

mostly uninsured patients in the ninth-floor HIV ward until all were safely evacuated. As the daughter of medical missionary parents who worked at a hospital named for Albert Schweitzer, she grew up in Deschapelles, Haiti, speaking Haitian Creole and discussing infections diseases at the dinner table. She developed a deep appreciation for Schweitzer’s philosophy of “reverence for life”. Dr. Berggren has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Oberlin College and an MD from Harvard Medical School. She has traveled and practiced around the world promoting global health, professional “ethics in action” and humanitarian values. There is a theme that appears every month on the Lifetimers’ newsletter which reads, “Living Life fully for the Time God Gives us.” It is easy to miss the significance of this statement, to see it as almost commonplace because of its oft repeated occurrence on our newsletter. Recently in The Branch, the newsletter for Woodland’s choir, Randy reminded us of the importance of paying attention to what’s around us all the time. He tells of his own experiences of walking and observing and thinking about his observations, and in the end he asks, “What kind of God creates all this: the universe displayed in such splendor, the individuals who make up this planet’s population, the inner working of the human brain…?” What a great reminder this is — to be observant of everything we encounter in our daily lives, a great reminder of our Lord and God. So part of living life fully includes being aware of our surroundings which come from God’s great bounty. Another mistake we often make is thinking that our task is only to wait for God to give us something— that we should be passive about living our lives — waiting for something to happen to us. But one never lives life fully by waiting. One lives life fully by doing. And in doing we need to be reminded that it’s the little things that count as well as the big things. Sometimes we’re a little fearful of venturing out, even in doing the small things. I have read that the clause “Do not be afraid.” is written in the Bible 365 times. WOW! Odds & Ends

Our own Bill Bahr recently flew from San Antonio to Washington, DC, on an Honor Flight to visit the WWII Memorial. Bill served in the Navy during the War. He was accompanied by his daughter on the trip. We owe a great debt to the heroes of WWII, and we are pleased to recognize those who are still with us. Thank you Bill!

The frost may not be on the pumpkin just yet, but it is October in South Texas, and that means Halloween is just around the corner. We will have a Halloween theme for our meeting, so be sure to dress with that in mind. Who can say if a few witches or goblins or ghosts might be lurking about! Remember our LifeTimers who are traveling in Costa Rica right now. We know they are having a great trip and look forward to welcoming them home soon. Note from the editor: We are always looking for news or items of interest to include in the newsletter. Thanks to Derlene Williams, we now have a new email address you can use for that purpose. If you have something you think should be published here, please send it by email to [email protected]. Thank you!
