6 LIFESTYLEMAGAZINESI JULY 2010

This month we celebrate our freedom and honor those who have made sacrifices for all of us on the Fourth of July. While many commemorate by going to parades, barbequing with family and friends, and enjoying fireworks, many others remember by flying the American flag.

My mother is one of those who would always be out early in the morning on the four th placing f lags in our front yard. I t was her way of honoring those men and women who fought for our way of l i fe. I fol low her example today by f lying the f lag each day on my home. I think i t is the least I can do for those preserving our securi ty.

As I look around South Florida I see the diversity which makes us great and I am in awe of the variety of cultures which add flavor to America’s melting pot. The FIFA World Cup Soccer is bringing us together and exhibits our national pride. In the office, our Brazilian Art Director and Argentinean Executive Editor cheer their respective teams as this Philadelphia born transplant hopes for the opposing goalies to allow a few balls to trickle into the net and set up a Miracle on Grass. We will see who has the bragging rights this month. It is remarkable how sporting events can bring out the best in the human spirit.

This month’s cover story shows another way the human spirit of individuals can have an extraordinary impact on the lives of others. Residents Gregg Sjoquist and Jennifer Klaassens have been pillars when it comes to building a community of philanthropy through the Wasie Foundation. These remarkable people are supporting local charities and events which assist those most in need in our county. I have had the privilege to work with both Gregg and Jennifer on several projects and I am proud to call them friends. I know you will enjoy reading about their impressive work.

In this issue there are additional stories on people making an impact in our community in their own way, as well as the monthly columns on Dining, Lifestyle Advice, Travel and the Scene Pages of events from previous months. Something for everyone to enjoy!

We said farewell to our Rotary Exchange Student and our home is a bit more somber than usual. Tim had a great year and our family grew immensely from the experience as well. We miss Tim already, but we have made new friends which will last a lifetime, with the hope to see each other again soon.

So as you go about your summer, this July especially, I urge you to remember those who sacrificed and continue to serve our country, which allows us to enjoy our freedom, in some way. Maybe it can be something as simple as Flying the American Flag.

As Always, Enjoy the Lifestyle ™

Let’s be honest, how many of us read the above headline and hear a voice a few octaves lower and with much more swagger? For many of us in South Florida, this simple greeting is immortalized

by a man who charismatically walked among us as an “Average Joe” never grandstanding his ability to make things happen in our community. Joe Millsaps was larger than life with a love for family, country and a passion for his community warmly wrapped in a friendly smile which made you feel like you were the most important person in his eyes. Joe made everyone feel comfortable, Rear Admirals, politicians, service personnel & volunteers alike. It is one trait we should model in our own lives.

Here are a few other lessons from “Mr. Fort Lauderdale” which his Winterfest Family would like to share:

- You are Never too Old to Dance …play with Hot Wheels … enjoy a Rock Concert or be in a Parade! Joe was always up for anything - from playing with grandchildren, enjoying the Indy 500, backstage passes to ZZ-Top to planning the Winterfest Parade.- An Army guy can run the Navy! Joe was an Army lieutenant in the infantry but was known as one of South Florida’s biggest champions of the U.S. Navy – His name is symbolic with Broward Navy Days, Fleet Week & the Air & Sea Show.- RADM is more than just a funny-sounding fi rst name! Joe invited a young Winterfest staff member to the headquarters of the United States Coast Guard Seventh District in Miami. Prior to the meeting, she was given a business card & replied “What a funny fi rst name – RADM” – the story has been told to every Rear Admiral that has met with Winterfest. Joe always loved a good joke, even at Lisa Scott-Founds expense!- We all need someone to talk to. On Advisory Board for the Center

of Psychological Studies at Nova Southeastern University, Joe took students aboard Navy vessels. He connected people. Joe realized the importance of listening especially when you have no one to truly talk to.- Volunteering is a distinguished look. Joe wasn’t afraid to take a leadership role. He chaired Broward Navy Days, Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, Winterfest, Broward Economic Council, and Stranahan House. He received the Public Service Award from both the US Navy and US Coast Guard.- Treat Life like a Party – Joe put the party in Winterfest, there is no need for explanation – toast anyone?- Spring Break can lead to Employment - His love of South Florida’s beaches during Spring Break blossomed into a successful real estate business. He was honored as Realtor of the Year by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Realtors Association and Florida Real Estate Association.- An orange jacket is surprisingly slimming when adorned with an Orange Bowl Committee emblem and a football. His involvement in the Carquest Bowl, Orange Bowl and Miami Hurricanes – guaranteed Joe looked good in orange.- Even if the Dolphins are losing – fans are still expected to do the wave! Joe was a season ticket holder who brought military personnel to see his beloved Miami Dolphins. Regardless of the score, Joe was an optimist- chanting “You have them right where you want ‘em.” till the fi nal whistle!- Heroes are not born - they are made … and they can be the guy next door. Joe was instrumental in boats hosting service men and women from the Wounded Warrior Program in the Winterfest Parade. A commitment that will continue.- And the fi nal lesson from Joe: How a simple greeting – “Hey, How ya doin’?” – can forever be imprinted in our hearts…

Forever With Love - Your Winterfest Family.

Jen’s energy, enthusiasm and intelligence shine through like a beacon, and that light shines on the community,” said Gregg Sjoquist, CEO of The Wasie Foundation when the City of Fort Lauderdale

offi cially proclaimed April 14th, 2010 as “Jen Klaassens Appreciation Day”. “She works tirelessly to help others in the community; this day was to let her know her work is greatly appreciated.” Sjoquist runs the independent philanthropic organization which provides grants and support to South Florida non-profi ts focused on healthcare and education. “When I fi rst met Jen, I knew she was a perfect fi t for The Wasie Foundation,” Gregg said. “Her energy, enthusiasm and intelligence shine through like a beacon, and I knew her light would shine on the community. I couldn’t be any happier.”

Jen is universally lauded, not only for giving checks, but as the face of the Foundation, she is on a mission to change the way non-profi ts do business by empowering them with the tools they need to grow their organizations. She actively provides opportunities for non-profi t executives to attend conferences on social media, fundraising and leadership. ”I’m here to motivate others, to have a sense of community, to get involved by volunteering their time, talents and treasures,” she said. One of the reasons she is active in dozens of organizations is to network with for-profi t and not-for-profi ts to help connect people. She urges CEO’s of for-profi t companies to “lead by example.”

In many ways, non-profi t organizations are the fabric of our community. As their staffs work tirelessly to assist those who depend on their services, they rely heavily on individual citizens for success,” Jen pointed out. “Most charities could not function without their volunteers, who donate their time to lend a hand in fundraising, help out at an event, provide one on one support to a family with a sick child, and even help fi x the computers when they go down.”

One project which is unique and exceptionally exciting to Jen is the creation and nurturing of the Non-Profi t Center at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, which features comfortable seating for meetings, computers, webinar opportunities, and free access to foundationcenter.org, an on-line foundation directory. While there have always been non-profi t members of the Chamber in it’s over one hundred year history, Jen saw an opportunity to help facilitate closer working relationships with the ninety non-profi t members. “A core principal of The Wasie Foundation has always been to positively infl uence the community by helping people overcome barriers and become self-reliant, so we began our efforts at the Chamber by providing trustee-level memberships to charitable organizations like Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center, Broward Children’s Center, Epilepsy Foundation and Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation,” Jen said. With the goal of forming partnerships through volunteer services, money, or in-kind donations, these top-tier memberships gave non-profi t organizations unprecedented access to business leaders through high-level networking receptions.

An example of success for one non-profit is Sasha Moon, development officer for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, who was able to network with the right people at the Chamber to find a company to volunteer their services. Through their Chamber membership, Sasha met the principals of the special events company “A Hot Party.” They provided emcee and casino services for a golf tournament and a character appearance for one of their program events. Additional opportunities have been created for both sectors of the Chamber to bond. For instance, a non-profit committee meets every second Wednesday of the month at 9:30AM “Faces Behind the Mission,” is a monthly speaking opportunity for one non-profit to showcase their organization during trustee-level luncheons. “Chamber Heroes,” is a program which spotlights a for-profit chamber member who donates their time, resources and efforts to help non-profits achieve their goals. From professionals sharing their talents and knowledge with those in need, to young people contributing to their community and gaining valuable lessons in caring, to senior citizens turning their golden years into golden moments helping others, the spirit of volunteerism leaves no life untouched.

Another solid testimony of Jen’s leading by example has been as a key player in the success of the AT&T Jeb Bush Florida Classic benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The three day event includes a fishing tournament, a golf tournament, a black-tie optional gala and a trendy beach bash. For the past two years, Jen has led the event’s marketing and public relations efforts and helped make the 2009 Havana Nights Beach Bash a record-breaking smash. Even in the midst of a challenging economy, the event broke all fundraising records, netting nearly fifty eight thousand dollars. “In 2010, I’m setting my sights on raising one hundred thousand dollars,” she said.

Her work was recently recognized nationally by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which named Jen to the prestigious Volunteer Leadership Committee, one of only forty people named from the more than one hundred regional chapters across the country. “Jen was chosen for this honor because of her extraordinary commitment to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and her achievements, particularly in the area of fundraising,” said Christina A. Landshut, executive director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, South Florida Office.

Sonia Perez, founder/executive director of Angel’s Pediatric Heart House, also lauds Jen’s work on their board. “Jen is really an amazing person who passionately helps charitable organizations help themselves,” Sonia said. “She is a person who genuinely wants to help make her community a better place to live. We adore and respect her.” Prior to joining The Wasie Foundation, Jen enjoyed a successful career in business, which she feels is an important part of her ability to connect the for-profits with the not-for-profits. Of course, all of these dynamics could not have been possible without the backing of The Wasie Foundation, established by Stanley L. Wasie, a trucking pioneer who personified the American Dream! “Stanley’s life is a true ‘Horatio Alger’ rags-to-riches story,” said Gregg Sjoquist.

Arriving from Poland at Ellis Island, Stanley and his mother and father, traveled to Minnesota to find work and a new life. Shortly after, Stanley’s mother died and his father found a couple who would take the six year old boy in and raise him. Times were tough and earning even a meager subsistence income meant working long hours in a factory. “The family who raised Stan was kind and soon looked upon their ward as their son.

GreggSjoquist

Page 13: Lifestyle Magazine -- Las Olas (July 2010)

LASOLASLIFESTYLEI JULY 2010 13

“ ”When you give. You get. Stanley was naturally inclined towards an old-world work ethic,” Gregg said. After ten years, Stanley felt it was time to leave the safe and loving environment to pursue an entrepreneurial career. He quickly found work at a delivery and warehouse firm in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. “You have to understand in the early 1900’s, Henry Ford’s Model ‘T’s were a new phenomenon and trucks were just being introduced. There were probably only fifty miles of paved roads in the whole country and there were no highways or interstate freeways,” Gregg noted.

By the late 1920’s, Stanley was ready to start his own company and having befriended a banker, he was able to get a “character loan”, which he used to purchase a single truck, which was the beginning of Merchants Motor Freight. As roads were built and long distance truck travel became feasible, Merchants offered customers fast, low cost door to door, cross-country transportation of goods and products. In the process, over-the-road trucking became a major player in America’s economic development and Stanley’s Merchants Motor Freight was at the forefront.

Over the years, Stanley not only guided the growth of his own company, but he introduced many innovations in equipment and business practices, helped deal with government regulation and other challenges and was instrumental in establishing the American Trucking Association, a trade group for the trucking industry. “Although he grew up impoverished and never received a formal education, Stan held the belief America was the land of opportunity. It was this belief, along with his hard work and determination which helped him to build what became one of the most successful trucking firms in the nation,” Gregg explained. In addition to Merchants Motor Freight, Wasie was a principal and chairman of the board of Murphy Motor Freight, another large regional carrier, adding to his reputation as one of the pioneering leaders of the modern trucking industry.

In the early 60’s, Stanley sold Merchants, which had grown into one of the country’s largest regional carriers with more than one thousand vehicles on the road. Not content to rest on his laurels in retirement, Wasie worked to establish a foundation through which his family’s good fortune could be shared with others. The Wasie Foundation is their legacy. Initially, the main focus of their philanthropy was helping students of Polish ancestry to get a better education. Over the years, The Wasie Foundation has grown to become a more then a sixty million dollar foundation, with five key areas of focus: Education for students of Polish ancestry, Schizophrenia, Arthritis, Cancer and children’s medical issues.

Gregg worked at the Foundation as its first Executive Director. After several years, however, he felt he wanted to pursue other business opportunities and left the Foundation. He enjoyed a good deal of success, but as Marie Wasie’s health began to fail, he agreed to come back and once again take the reins of the Foundation. Since then, the Foundation has grown under his leadership and now has two active offices, one in Wayzata, Minnesota and one here in Broward County.

In summing up the philosophy which drives Jen, she says “promoting both social and corporate responsibility is my greatest passion. I am driven by the notion Florida’s business leaders need to set an example for their employees and provide them with opportunities to get involved. Making philanthropy part of the work culture leads to higher employee satisfaction and sense of purpose, which in turn contributes to the success of a corporation. When you give, you get. If corporate leaders put this simple concept in action, many non-profits would reap the benefits, which would ultimately lead to a better community.” LM

Traditional non-profit board recruitment processes often overlook younger professionals, and, as a result, non-profit organizations often miss out on the talents, resources and enthusiasm these

aspiring young leaders have to offer. Fortunately, an increasing number of non-profit organizations throughout Broward County are moving away from this tradition and have begun cultivating a new generation of community leadership by partnering with Emerge Broward, a program of the Leadership Broward Foundation.

The overall mission of Emerge Broward is to identify the emerging leaders and young professionals of Broward County, connect them with each other and current leaders in the community, develop their ability to serve as community trustees, and engage them within the community. Since its launch in 2007, Emerge Broward has experienced tremendous growth and success, with a diverse membership base of more than eight hundred accomplished young leaders with ages ranging from twenty one to thirty five.

One of Emerge Broward’s most exciting endeavors is the annual Board Engagement program, a unique opportunity for its members to become active participants on the boards of local non-profit organizations and make a meaningful impact on their community.

The Board Engagement program selects Emerge Broward members who have demonstrated community involvement and leadership experience and trains them on the basics of non-profit governance and the role of an active and engaged board member. Non-profit organizations are then invited to apply to the program and participate in a multi-tiered selection process designed to find the board member with a passion for their mission,

who at the same time best meets the current needs of their boards. The Board Engagement program has grown extremely competitive and proven immensely successful – an overwhelming majority of its board members continue to serve even after their initial term has ended, and many have taken on executive-level roles, such as vice chair, treasurer or secretary.

In its third year Emerge Broward further improved the quality of the program with the help of CoreStrategies for Nonprofits, Inc., a company which provides consultation services on board development, governance, fundraising, and more. Company principals Gail S. Meltzer, CFRE, and Terrie Temkin, Ph.D, facilitated comprehensive training sessions for the Emerge Broward members prior to their placement and continue to serve as mentors and resources as the members begin their first term of board service.

Emerge Broward is excited to welcome the newest participants into the Board Engagement program, including A Child is Missing, American Red Cross, Angel’s Pediatric Heart House, ARC Broward, Art & Cultural Center of Hollywood, Best Buddies, Boys & Girls Club Broward, Broward Children’s Center Foundation, Broward Public Library Foundation, CareSource, Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Gilda’s Club South Florida, Hispanic Unity, Horses for the Handicapped, March of Dimes Broward, Meals on Wheels Broward, Mental Health Association of Broward, PACE Center for Girls, Senior Volunteer Services, SOS Children’s Villages, Starlight Children’s Foundation of Florida, SunServe, and Women in Distress.

Most five year old boys find policemen with their cars, lights and sirens cool and exciting. When David was five he found policemen with their cars, lights and sirens scary when they

whisked him away from his neglectful mother. Scared and confused this innocent five year old boy was sentenced into foster care for his mother‘s sins, where another turbulent life awaited him.

By nine David had become an angry and resentful boy with low self-esteem, having been forgotten by rotating case workers and an overcrowded foster home leading to another police altering moment. This time they took David away in handcuffs and he was charged with a double felony for assault. At nine years old this young boy a victim of circumstances, lingered in jail for three days before being carted off to a shelter with a probationary sentence and record. Once again, this child’s life would take a turbulent turn. “One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life: That word is love.” Sophocles.

For years Michael Gange, a bachelor working with an emergency medical management company wanted to become a Dad. He wanted to domestically adopt a child between the ages of eight and twelve. For three endless years of background checks, paperwork and red tape Michael, was finally approved to adopt as a single parent. Stacks of matches were presented to Gange, by his assigned case worker. Pausing and then passing on David’s file, Gange was redirected to meet David. Upon meeting in the park, Michael didn’t see the David on paper with severe behavioral issues, he saw a charming and charismatic young man in need of a father. According to Gange, “David’s issues required a one parent home with a flexible job catering specifically to David’s needs. My lifestyle could provide him that. I knew more importantly, he was the child I wanted to give my unconditional love and commitment too.”

David’s years of instability and lack of direction made it difficult for the two to bond; his trust in people had long been shattered.

Michael’s fatherly vow, perseverance, resiliency, unconditional love and encouragement began to slowly win David over. Gange surrounded David with a network of professional supports to empower him. He learned to channel his anger more appropriately and believe in his father’s positive words of encouragement “Don’t limit yourself by what you don’t know, the possibilities are endless, aim higher than your original goal, and be proud of where you’ve been and where you are now!” Michael cemented their relationship when he legally adopted David, telling him, “leave the negative with your old name and bring all the positive stuff with you to your new name Gange.”

David now eighteen years old, has accomplished what many, except his dad thought to be impossible. He was nominated by his high school assistant principal to attend Harvard University’s summer program. Of the twelve thousand world wide applicants for the twelve hundred spots, David was among those chosen. He recently was a keynote speaker at the Adoptive and Foster Appreciation Dinner, winner of Broward County School Board’s Diversity and Inclusion Award, and was in the top three, out of two hundred applicants to receive the Chris Everett Powerful Kid Contest. In his spare time he mentors children in foster care through the SHINE organization.

By being courageous, forgiving and loving this “forgotten child” aspires to become a judge, he says, “So when another nine year old comes before the court I can maybe understand where they may be coming from and give them rehabilitation instead of punishment.”

When I asked David what has been the most challenging obstacle he faced? His response “who to open up to, who was I going to trust, how long will dad be in my life.” What is your biggest accomplishment? “Getting comfortable and enjoying school…getting into Harvard!

Bob SwindellPresident - Broward Alliance

When asked how he measures success, Bob replies; “In my present role leading the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, success

is simple to measure; but not easy in today’s economic environment. Bringing new employers and keeping existing employers is what we do every day. The team at the Alliance feels a personal obligation and commitment to our friends, family and neighbors to accelerate job growth in Broward County. We are dedicated and enjoy the opportunity to promote Greater Fort Lauderdale to business.”

Bob is looking forward to a stronger, more diversifi ed economy, representing greater opportunities for future generations to fi nd their dream job, earning a high wage and living a fulfi lling life in South Florida. “We have an incredible opportunity with everything South Florida has to offer, and we need to make sure the nationally and international business people are aware that Greater Fort Lauderdale is an ideal location to grow a successful business. Bob was appointed by Florida Governors Martinez, Chiles, and Bush to lead statewide regulatory boards, as a member of the Florida Board of Harbor Pilot Commissioners.

Bob has also had the opportunity to serve on the American Red Cross Broward County Chapter’s Board of Directors for many years. During his period of service he has had the unique responsibility during the impact of Hurricane Andrew to serve as Board Chairman. “I will never forget my fi rst visit to Homestead with members of our emergency management team days after the storm. Navigation devices were not as common in 1992, and navigating without the assistance of street signs and highway exit signs was just another of many challenges in the early days after the storm. But we did the best we could and got the job done.”

Bob Swindell grew-up in Broward County loving the coastal lifestyle which is such an important component of our quality of life. Bob’s father taught him how to sail at the age of ten and was certifi ed for Scuba Diving at the age of thirteen. “We explored Florida by boat off-shore down to the Keys and Thousand Islands and taking the inland waterway up to Lake Okeechobee. Bob loves the South Florida Lifestyle and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. LM

We are not going green

has always beenGREENHYLATTTTThe HYLA was launched in Germany in 1990, a time when most

individuals had not yet grasped the concept of “Green”, nor was “Going Green” even a topic of conversation. Recycling, utilizing alternative energy, and similar environmentally-friendly measures have become more popular throughout the past decade, as the understanding that the Earth’s resources are limited has become reality.

In addition to the population’s measures to protect the environment – not only for ourselves, but also for future generations – an increase in a generally healthier lifestyle has also been on the rise, as individuals have placed importance on eating organic foods, exercising on a regular basis, and investing in natural, earth-friendly products for their homes and businesses.

Filiz and Hartmut Gassmann, residents of Parkland, introduced HYLA to the U.S. market in 1996 after realizing its potential as a future-oriented product. They obtained the exclusive rights as the Importer of the HYLA in the U.S. from HYLA International, located in Stuttgart, Germany (where Mercedes & Porsche are manufactured). Beginning with only themselves and a 1900 sq. ft. of ce in Greenville, SC, they have spent the last 14 years growing the business to what it is now – more than 90 of ces and 450 associates nationwide.

2004 proved to be a triumphant year, as Filiz and Hartmut designed and relocated to the new home for the U.S. Headquarters, a prestigious 11,000 sq. ft. building in the Newport Center of Deer eld Beach, where marketing, administration, shipping and receiving is managed by their staff. Filiz and Hartmut not only oversee all operations, but also – and most importantly – support their Distributors nationwide. All HYLA U.S. Distributors

and their Sales Representatives sell the HYLA System strictly through in-home demonstrations, giving potential customers an opportunity to see, feel, and smell the HYLA experience rst-hand.

Studies from the Environmental Protection Agency have reported that the air indoors – where we spend approximately 90% of our time - is generally ve to 10 times – but can also be up to 50 times - more polluted than the air outdoors. Particles and gases that are in the air can contain soot, animal dander, dust mite droppings, cleaning chemicals, pesticides and much more – a potent mix of pollution that can trigger everything from watery eyes and sore throats to asthma attacks, dizziness and fainting spells.

Like Mother Nature, the HYLA Cleaning System uses only water as a lter. Dust, dirt and allergens are trapped in a water pan and clean water-washed air escapes through the HYLA, improving air quality. The HYLA can be used as an Air Cleaner or with attachments as a Room Cleaning system. Conventional Air Cleaners and Vacuum Cleaners use lters and/or lter bags that not only pollute the indoor air as the small particles pass through their pores, but also clog easily, restricting air ow and, consequently, the cleaning ability. Since HYLA has only water as the lter, there are no pores that will get clogged up, keeping consistent

air ow that is necessary for ef cient cleaning.

The HYLA not only provides a healthier indoor environment for our families but also does not pollute our outdoor environment with lters and lter bags that get purchased, used and thrown away by the millions every day.

HYLA is part of a healthier and environmentally-friendly Lifestyle. 888-TRY-HYLA

HYLA - Using water as the only filter brings nature back home!

R

FACT: The EPA reports in average air pollution indoors is 5-10 times (up to 50 times) higher than outdoors.

FACT: Indoor air pollution can cause a variety of short and long term illnesses, including al-lergies, asthma, respiratory diseases, heart de-sease, and cancer.

FACT: Millions of people suffer from allergies and asthma, in-cluding infants.

FACT: Approx. 90% of your time is spent indoors, making the above facts terrifying.

SOLUTION: The HYLA Cleaning System

HYLA has spent the last 20 years providing their customers with an environmentally-friendly product, supporting a healthier lifestyle for thousands of families worldwide.

Using water as the sole filter, the HYLA allows its owners to breathe water-washed air by trapping dust, dirt, gases, and other pollutions in a water pan. This technique resem-bles the way Mother Nature washes the air outside with rain, making life on this planet possible.

This summer, Gaylord Palms guests will have the opportunity to channel their inner rock star and participate in a roster of rockin’ fun, culinary creations and creative expressions all part of SummerFest at Gaylord

Palms. The two million square foot resort, located fi ve minutes from the gates of Walt Disney World, is designed in the tradition of a grand nineteenth century Florida seaside resort. The hotel’s appearance is distinct and completely themed to the Sunshine State, including the locales of St. Augustine, Key West, the Emerald Coast, Miami’s South Beach and the Everglades.

Each atrium refl ects the architecture, natural resources, beauty, and personality of the destination. Standing tall inside the St. Augustine atrium is a reproduction of Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest Spanish fort in America. Guests can explore caves adjacent to the fort and encounter species of Florida turtles, and live gators. The focal point for the Key West atrium is a sixty foot sailboat in a one hundred and sixty thousand gallon indoor lagoon with live stingrays and Florida game fi sh. Every evening, the atrium is the setting of a sunset celebration reminiscent of Key West’s Mallory Square. In the Everglades, the mysterious “river of grass” comes to life with a mystical fog, magical “fi refl ies” and lush vegetation.

The festival runs every weekend from now until August 29th with special themed entertainment and activities all staged under the signature 4.5 acre glass-covered atrium. Once the sun goes down, the festivities amp up outdoors. SummerFest events include the Roadies Challenge where you are the roadie and you have one responsibility, to keep track of the band’s guitars. You’ve wandered off and their entire collection is missing. Search the Gaylord Palms atriums to fi nd them.

Families who visit Gaylord Palms Resort for SummerFest can “live like a rock star” while their children eat free, all part of the “Kids Eat Free” SummerFest perk. Free meals for kids, ages twelve and under, are available at select restaurants when ordering from a special children’s menu. You can take the stage at Auggies and channel your inner performer. Rock out on the drums. Take the Stairway to Heaven on the guitar. This is your time to shine.

The life of a rock star includes countless hours at the pool. Enjoy a dip at our Clearwater Cove water activities playground, while our DJ spins today’s tunes and provides an afternoon of rock star fun straight into the evening! And as the sun goes down, Soak up the Summer Nights out by the pool, just kick back and live large at a poolside private movie screening.

Check out our award-winning sand sculptures on display throughout SummerFest. A Florida tradition rocks on! If you can’t take the heat, then come inside Gaylord Palms! As part of our SummerFest lineup, we’re spicing it up and cooling you off with these special dining events sponsored by Rosemount Wines, the offi cial wine of the hit FOX series “Hell’s Kitchen.” Sit back and unwind to the tune of relaxation. Acclaimed Chef Ron Duprat welcomed us to his beachfront dining experience in Hollywood where he lights up the dining room with his warm embrace and hearty laugh. We settled into a table with

a beautiful panorama view of the ocean eagerly waiting for Chef Ron’s culinary surprise. As seen on Bravo’s Top Chef Season 6, Ron creates the most delectable cuisine in a casual atmosphere, delightful for the most gourmet palate. Nestled within the Hollywood Beach Marriott, Latitudes on the Beach offers a fantastic dining experience in South Florida. Sit outdoors, feel the ocean breezes...people watch, and most importantly, sample amazing cuisine at Latitudes on the Beach, on Hollywood’s famous Boardwalk.

Ron, a native of Haiti who was classically trained at College Aimee Cesaire and La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine, was one of the lucky seventeen “cheftestants” along for the ride on Top Chef Season 6. With an amazing passion for cuisine, Chef Ron cooked for renowned guest judges and in a variety of unique scenarios in Las Vegas and was reenergized to get home to South Florida to re-create his menu.

Amazing Lobster & Crab Cakes with tropical fruit salsa and mango chipotle sauce were a perfect beginning along with the Island Calamari with fresh garlic, banana peppers, scallions and marinara sauce. Spicy Prince Edward Island Mussels in light coconut broth were both fragrant and fl avorful. Seared Tuna on crispy wontons with a soy glaze, wasabi, ginger and fresh mango was incredible.

Creamy Maine Lobster Bisque with a lobster fritter and a splash of Aged Sherry was irresistible. The chilled Latitudes salad included romaine hearts, Feta cheese, red and yellow tomatoes, red onion, hearts of palm and toasted pine nuts is tossed in a delicious tarragon vinaigrette. The Gorgonzola Steak

salad, a meal in itself, combines fl ame grilled steak, crisp romaine, imported olives, Gorgonzola crumbles, herb roasted tomatoes, Portobello mushrooms, garlicky French beans, crispy onion haystack all perfectly dressed in a roasted shallot dressing.

For the main entrees, delicate Yellowtail Snapper was pan seared with Florida Gulf shrimp, fresh asparagus, Portobello mushrooms, Yukon Gold mashed potatoes in a Lemon Caper Sauce. Meat lovers don’t miss the Five Peppercorn Ribeye Steak with a roasted shallot demi glaze, baby zucchini and mashed potato while fresh Grilled Florida Gulf Shrimp is accompanied by grilled pineapple relish, baby carrots, baby zucchini, citrus herb rice and curried coconut cream. Cooked to perfection, the Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi is served with grilled asparagus and Caribbean rice in a Rum butter sauce.

On the lighter side you can always choose from one of the delectable sandwiches which include a Lobster Crab Cake on a fresh grilled bun with lettuce, tomato, red onion and house made Tartar Sauce. New York Strip Steak with caramelized onions, mushrooms, Boursin Cheese on a crispy baguette or the Mahi Mahi Sandwich, grilled or blackened with a Key Lime remoulade, lettuce, tomato and caramelized red onion were fantastic.

Our sweet ending was a light and decadent selection of Mango Raspberry Mousse, Chocolate Mousse, and Mixed Berry Tart with cinnamon brown sugar crumbles along with the rich Chocolate Indulgence.

Don’t wait and hurry in to experience the incredible cuisine of Chef Ron today! Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Latitudes Restaurant & Tiki Bar is located in the Hollywood Beach Marriott at 2501 North Ocean Drive. Losing weight and feeling great is no easy task. I successfully lost 130 pounds and can empathize with the

stress of weight loss. My most important achievement has been keeping the weight off and maintaining it for nearly two years.

Transforming my body from a size 24 to a size 2 was the most physically and psychologically challenging task of my life time.

Along the way, I learned many tricks to help the body burn fuel. My primary mission is to educate people and share my experience with others so they too can get healthy and win the battle of the bulge.

To start individuals need to understand metabolism, the rate at which the body converts food into energy. Exercise is the easiest, most important method to maintaining a fast metabolism. In addition, water is extremely important because it nourishes and helps fl ush out the body’s excess sodium and toxins. Studies suggest that water intake can boost metabolism up to

30 percent. It also prevents individuals from mistaking thirst for hunger.

Drinking caffeinated beverages such as tea and coffee and eating citrus fruit, soy, dark, green vegetables and hot peppers can provide a quick, metabolic boost.

In an effort to lose weight, we have been told to cut fat out of our diets. However, the body needs adequate fat content to achieve optimal weight loss performance. Fatty fi sh such as salmon, mackerel and sardines possess Omega-3 fats that benefi t our metabolism and strengthen the heart by preventing strokes and lowering bad cholesterol levels.

The process of metabolism establishes the rate at which we burn calories and, ideally how quickly we either gain or lose weight. Clients always approach me and say, “I need to speed up my metabolism,” but fail to realize that there are a number of factors that affect one’s metabolic rate such as age and genetics.

Through proper diet and exercise, one can train their body to naturally increase its metabolism. The most effi cient way to decrease and maintain low body fat for the long term is through a well-balanced combination of strength training and cardiovascular training.

Remember, the quality of your workout will determine the effectiveness of it far greater than the quantity. To make the most of your metabolism remember these key exercise tips:

• When weight training, do 8-15 repetitions in 2-4 sets of each movement.(beginners start with 2 sets; advanced up to 4)

• Choose movements that work on multiple muscles. For example, while performing a stationary lunge, try frontal shoulder raises or bicep curls while using free weights.

• Limit resting between sets to no longer than 60-75 seconds; or, skip the rest and alternate between working two muscle groups such as back and biceps.

• Slow down when lifting weights, it’s not a race to the fi nish. A 3 second count on both the concentric and eccentric phases (beginning and ending phases) is a good rule of thumb to pace your repetitions.

• When performing cardio, alternate moderate exercise with sprints of high intensity and change up your routine. Try breaking cardio up into 2 -3 different machines such as the elliptical, stair climber, and treadmill (use that incline button). Try cycling or jump roping. The key is variety to keep muscles guessing and prevent boredom.

Losing weight, like anything of great signifi cance, takes patience and time. Remember, knowledge is power. That is why the center for medical weight loss at University Drive and Midtown Athletic Club in Weston are joining forces to bring The Ultimate Weight loss Challenge; Feel Great in 8 for the fi rst time in South Florida. Only open to the fi rst 30 entrants. These competitors will not only receive a complete supply of nutritional supplements, 2 days of personal training and unlimited access into Midtown Athletic Club in Weston for 8 weeks but will be eligible to win huge prizes. After 8 weeks each contestant is guaranteed to have the necessary tools and knowledge to continue losing or maintaining their weight long term. For more information on the center for medical weight loss visit www.cmwl.org or call 954-966-5700 to reserve your spot today.

The newest advances in Laser Technology have revolutionized “Gold Standard” CO2 Laser

Skin resurfacing and can now safely and precisely remove outer layers of damaged skin to reveal the underlying skin which is softer, smoother and often dramatically, younger looking. It also stimulates the regeneration of healthy skin underneath (called “LaserSkinRenewal”), for a youthful and beautiful appearance

This superlative skin resurfacing – rejuvenation procedure will reverse decades of sun damage, wrinkles, scars and many other skin imperfections in just minutes. When compared to other forms of laser treatment, the CO2 micro ablative is the new “Gold Standard” for rapid and optimal enhancement in as few as 1 treatment!

Dr. Shino Bay Aguilera, whose patients range in age from 13 to 81 says that “The micro ablation removes sun damaged skin and makes it fresher looking; the second part called “bulk heating” improves collagen and elastic fi bers deep down that improve deep to moderate wrinkles. It’s also great for removing and resurfacing skin, all types of scars, and safe anywhere on the face, body or hands. We are even using it on stretch marks.”

By fractioning the laser beam into thousands of microscopic beams a specifi c portion of the skin is left unharmed, which is more conducive to healing. This fractional method enables cells to begin healing immediately and creates it’s own dry bandage almost immediately. The completely comfortable, downtime can be adjusted to fi t your busy

schedule from 3 to 7 days – versus two months or more with the original Co2 laser. In 5-7 days your skin is gorgeous and the tightening and collagen regeneration continues improving for 3-6 months!

“The new “Non Surgical Laser Facelift or Eye Lift” can take years off a person’s appearance making them look many years younger,” noted Dr. Aguilera. Our other popular cosmetic procedures include Botox, Dysport and Advanced Dermal fi llers (like Sculptra) to replenish the volume of fat and bone loss on the face. Fillers take care of the volume and folds while the laser takes care of the skin’s wrinkles, texture and tone and laxity. Dr. Aguilera has trained thousands of physicians and is an advanced laser, cosmetic injectables and dermatological expert. He is a master artist of non surgical cosmetic enhancements utilizing the world’s fi nest technologies and techniques. His unique ability to provide patients with a dramatically younger but “natural look” makes him an in-demand

cosmetic dermatologist - and as holder of two board certifi cations and a Fellowship in Dermatology from the American Osteopathic college of Dermatology, Dr. Aguilera is a internationally known, premier expert in beauty restoration, Cosmetic lasers and age-reversing techniques.

The world class, “Shino Bay Cosmetic Dermatology & Laser Institute” houses over 22 of the fi nest, leading edge, cosmetic technologies and is Certifi ed as a prestigious, “Laser Center of Excellence” and Physician Training Center for the United States and Latin America.

His expertise is as close as his spectacular, brand new offi ce of the future at 350 Las Olas Boulevard Suite 110 (Ground Floor). A Fort Lauderdale plastic surgeon is featured in Glamour magazine. A South Florida trial lawyer’s case is

profi led on CNN, Good Morning America and Prime Time Live. A Boca Raton retailer is featured in a story read by thousands of area residents – and on NBC-6’s Today in South Florida and WSVN’s Deco Drive.

How did each of these people become high-profi le experts in their respective fi elds? How did they get in the news?

It’s called public relations, and it’s a critical component of any marketing campaign. Most practitioners believe the value of the perceived objectivity of being quoted or profi led in a news article can be worth more than three times the cost of a similarly sized paid advertisement.

But while good P.R. can work wonders for a business’s bottom line, it requires strategic planning, hard work and time-tested principles…

• Consume media. Whether it’s a local paper or television station, an industry or professional trade journal, or a specialized consumer publication, Website or blog -- read the outlets your target audience is reading. Get to know what the media are covering – trends, news, products, etc. Look for the “beat” writers who cover your niche.

• Contact the journalist. Email or call the beat journalist or blogger to introduce yourself. Keep this contact brief, maybe including a short bio of yourself and your business, and a quick news tip as the “purpose” of your outreach. But remember to begin every call with this sentence, “Are you on deadline…?” Journalists appreciate this awareness, and will know you’re not a novice.

• Think local. Media – especially local outlets – Create local angles to national news or trend stories. How does an emerging national story (on vehicle recalls, a spreading fl u, or the latest toy craze) impact the South Florida market? Since you’ve been reading the media and following the trends, you should know what hasn’t been covered. Relay this to your journalist contacts.

• Be a partner. Being P.R.-savvy isn’t about always getting your name in print. It’s about being eyes and ears on the street for the journalist. If you spot an emerging trend, send the journalist an email tip. Even if you aren’t a candidate for coverage, they’ll appreciate the lead – especially if you have a relevant business, client or other example they can use for their story.

• Write a blog. Sometimes, journalists for outlets you’ve never heard of or considered for coverage come seeking comments. Create a Website, write a blog, or submit columns to print or online media to raise your search results – and the likelihood you’ll be found online.

Effective and consistent public relations isn’t an overnight success story. Great P.R. fi rms and corporate communications executives spend entire careers building media relationships and honing their craft. Whether you do it yourself, or hire an experienced fi rm, becoming a P.R. success story could make the good news be yours!

Recovering from a

CardiacEventHazel DeLuca, M.S., ACSM CES

Clinical Exercise Physiologist

More than one in three American adults has one or more types of cardiovascular

disease (CVD). Nearly 2,300 Americans die of CVD each day, an average of one death every 38 seconds.

Numerous studies have shown a reduction in risk for CVD with increased levels of physical activity. In addition, exercise is a key component in secondary prevention, decreasing the need for interventional procedures such as angioplasty and bypass grafting, and reducing the incidence of subsequent heart attacks.

The cardiac rehabilitation team at Cleveland Clinic Florida helps cardiac patients regain their strength and well-being after a major cardiac event through a system of education, exercise and emotional support.

What is cardiac rehabilitation (or cardiac rehab)?

Cardiac Rehab is part of an integrated team approach that includes physicians, exercise specialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and counselors who provide a medically supervised exercise program, lifestyle modifi cation counseling and emotional support.

What are the benefi ts of cardiac rehab?

Cardiac rehab aids in recovery after a heart attack or cardiac surgery, slows progression of the disease by reducing risk factors, increases chances of survival and improves quality of life.

Who needs cardiac rehab?People of all ages who have angina or are recovering from heart attacks, coronary angioplasty, coronary bypass (open heart) surgery, heart transplant, and valvular surgery can benefi t from cardiac rehab.

In addition to increasing functional capacity through goal directed exercise programming, cardiac rehab offers education including smoking cessation, nutritional counseling, weight management, coping and stress management skills, medication counseling, cholesterol and blood pressure treatment strategies, diabetes care and psychosocial assistance.

Cleveland Clinic Florida’s cardiac rehab has a unique advantage in its multidisciplinary group practice model of medicine in one unifi ed campus. In this group practice model, by working closely with the patient’s doctors, the cardiac rehab team can assist the patient in reaching target goals more effi ciently,

while maintaining optimal communication with the patient’s doctors.

Cleveland Clinic Florida cardiologist and director of Cardiac Rehabilitation, Gian Novaro M.D., explains, “It’s reassuring to the patient to know that their primary doctor, their cardiologist, and the cardiac rehab team are all on one campus, in close communication, with the patient’s heart health in mind.”

If you or someone you know could benefi t from cardiac education and exercise programming, please schedule a consultation at the Cleveland Clinic Florida Cardiac and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center by calling 954–659–5350.
