Dear Lifeline Plus readers,

Welcome to our second edition! We hope you enjoy reading about what Youth With Mission staff and students are doing throughout India and beyond. It is so important to share our

stories. They offer us vision for things we didn’t think possible, encouragement in struggle, and practical ideas. Our hope is that they also spur you to action. YWAM India is a beautifully diverse group of people serving missions in an equally diverse amount of ways. This magazine is meant to be a place where ideas, resources, encouragement, and lives are exchanged. You, the readers, are the ones who will make this happen. This is your space, YWAM and friends. We each have a story to share. What’s your story? Send it to us at: [email protected] Visit us online: www.lifelineplus.spicecom.org

Lifeline Plus is only a small part of what SpiceCom, YWAM India’s communications team, aims to do in India. This edition is an attempt to further highlight part of SpiceCom’s vision statement, “… bridging the gaps within the mission and between YWAM and the local church…” Make sure to check out page 8 for an excellent example of engaging the text and making connections.

SpiceCom’s goals are to: Train, Motivate, Facilitate, Equip and Empower YWAMers to be effective communicators.

Thanks,

Lifeline Plus Team

Bhavna stood in the front of the small church with her outreach team. She was a student in the first Hindi-English Introduction to Biblical Counseling (IBC) team in India, and this was the first day of partnering with

the church to do a four-day Plumbline seminar. For three months her classes and teachers had prepared her for this outreach. She learned the Biblical basis for counseling and the importance of repentance and forgiveness. The school wasn’t easy with homework, book reports, and a busy schedule, but all the hard work was worth it as she was now prepared to bring healing to the brokenhearted. To be able to present it all in her heart language, Hindi, made it even more exciting.

While her team finished the teaching, Bhavna sat next to a young girl who had come that day for the youth seminar. Bhavna had noticed her immediately as she sat alone on the floor in the back with her head down. Why had she come? Why was she sitting on the floor by herself? Why did she never look up? What had happened to her? She had so many questions without one single answer. Bhavna’s neck ached from trying to see the girl’s downcast eyes, and after about 45 minutes of talking to the girl with no response, her mouth was drying up. Under normal circumstances she would have given up, but something kept her rooted in her seat, twisting her neck to see this girl’s sad eyes, determined to discover her story, whispering silent prayers for wisdom. After the seminar that day Bhavna told the girl that she wanted to be her friend. There was still no response. Later in the evening she learned from the pastor that the girl’s name was Aarti.

The next Sunday during the church service Bhavna saw Aarti again. Later as they stood together in the warm sun, Aarti’s mom invited Bhavna over for lunch. During the meal part of Aarti’s story was revealed. Aarti hadn’t spoken or looked up for the last 6 years. Now seventeen, she shuffled around in complete silence. Her father and stepmother had put her into a school for the deaf and dumb, thinking that she was mute. They had no idea why she had suddenly stopped talking. The father was at a loss for options, desperate to hear his

little girl’s voice again. They agreed to let Bhavna come every day and spend time alone with Aarti. Bhavna was hopeful that she could help this girl and her family.

The friendship began slowly. Bhavna would talk while the girl sat silently. Even though it was frustrating to never hear an answer, this IBC student was determined. She tried to explain that friends communicate because they care about each other. After about 3 days, when Bhavna had almost reached the end of her patience, she realized that she needed to enable Aarti to express herself. They developed a method where Aarti would write down her thoughts for Bhavna to read. This process was effective, and slowly the details of her silence were revealed. In school Aarti had been abused multiple times over the course of a few years. The last instance happened when she was 11 years old, and at that time she completely stopped communicating or even looking up. Her world became one of silent, lonely suffering. Her parents were shocked and hurt when they found out the truth of her silence.

Two weeks of meeting daily in Aarti’s small room went by quickly. Suddenly the team had to leave that village because of persecution. As they left, the pastor of the church told them all how grateful he was for their teaching and especially for helping Aarti. When Bhavna was leaving, the girl spoke her first tentative words. Without looking up she said, “Praise the Lord.” Those simple words were power steps forward. Bhavna was overjoyed but disappointed to leave at such a crucial time. They prayed together, and the team moved to a different city.

As the outreach team settled into their new location, they received a surprising phone call from the pastor of the town they had just fled. He wanted Aarti to stay with the team for two weeks in order to continue the counseling and healing process. The team prayed together because they knew that this was a big decision. It would completely change their team dynamic and take a lot of extra energy. After prayer they realized that they needed to not only have Aarti come but also her stepmother. She would be good support just in case the girl had any unforeseen problems. Aarti and her mom and joined the team a few days later.

After looking down for so many years, Aarti’s neck muscles had frozen in place. She couldn’t feed herself because of the way her head was stuck in place. Bhavna woke up at 5am every morning to do stretches and exercises with her so that her neck would loosen and give her the ability to look up and function. This was only part of the daily work and care that Bhavna provided.

At one point, the girl and her mother were able to reconcile, bringing healing to their relationship, which had been fractured for many years. Tears were shed as they shared words of forgiveness and love. If this wasn’t enough progress, Aarti started speaking, reading, and engaging with the team members. She and her mother stayed with the team for 3 weeks. Finally, when Aarti’s father came to pick them up, she ran up to the car and said, “Praise the Lord, Papa.” These were the first words he had heard his little girl speak in 6 years. After the initial shock, tears of joy and words of thankfulness were exchanged as they spoke looking into each other’s eyes. It was a powerful time of healing for the whole family. This dad had his little girl back and peace in his home.

Six months after the team left the area Aarti continued progressing. She became involved in the church. She spoke to everyone, radiating the redeeming power of a relationship with Jesus. The pastor and his wife started to look for a school for her to attend. Now, 18 months later, she has finished her schooling at a Bible College and is back home with her family. Aarti has a life, a future, and a hope because of the amazing love of God shown through this IBC team and her pastor. As her first words expressed, “Praise the Lord!”

The small DTS team traveled with a purpose from Indore, Madhya Pradesh to Satara, Maharashtra. The staff and students were going to conduct a Mini DTS in Satara where people speak mostly Marathi, compared to the team’s Hindi. They were filled with nervous

anticipation. How would they communicate effectively? This trip had already taught them to trust in God in new ways. In fact they had almost not made it to Satara. Their travel funds were gone before they reached their destination, but through the generosity of churches along the way, they had enough. “During my DTS outreach I learned to depend on God as provider. He will come through,” said one of the Indore DTS students. With this new sense of trust in mind, they moved forward. Upon reaching Satara they partnered with Blessing Youth Mission and local churches. The 10-day Mini DTS began with some apprehension but mostly excitement. Thirty-two youth from seven different churches signed up for the school. “It was challenging because we didn’t speak Marathi, but the people wanted to learn our Hindi worship songs. They wanted to be a part of what we were doing,” said Braja, one of the Indore DTS students. YWAM speakers from Pune and Lonavala spoke on different subjects like the Father Heart of God, Hearing God’s Voice, Discipleship, and Intercession. Both staff and students grew together in relationship as they worshiped, had Bible studies, and participated in small group sessions. The evenings were filled with wonderful times of fellowship, games, and an occasional movie. The closing evening, a YWAM Bhajan team from Lonavala performed for the Mini DTS participants, and about 100 more people from the community attended. It was a powerful time of worshiping Jesus, a good conclusion to a joyous and transformational school.

At the end of the 10 days, the DTS students from Indore were amazed at all that had happened. God had answered their prayers and the school was a huge success. Many of the Mini DTS participants were new believers who were scared to share about Jesus in their communities. But after the school they were charged, ready to reach out to their people because they had new tools and training. The churches and groups they are parts of were impressed with the new sense of passion and mission they expressed. Now teams made up of recently graduated Indore DTS students are receiving the training and support needed to pioneer a YWAM base in Satara.

We came by train, car and bus, some travelling hundreds of miles to get to Goa. Over two hundred YWAMers braved hot sun and cold rain, expecting to meet with the Lord and fellowship with one another.

We were not disappointed as God spoke through Pastor Stanley Mehta from Mumbai, Aldrin Bogi from Bangalore, and Ah Kie Lim from Pune. A worship band from Lonavala, 24/7, led us into intense, personal times of worship.

After the conference, Aila, YWAM’s area director shared,“The expectation on our hearts … was that there would be casting of vision for the future, for advancement of the gospel of Jesus in the area. And I think the Lord has done all that we asked for and much more.”

All of the speakers challenged YWAMers to advance together, reminding us that when we are unified and rooted we will advance. The remarkable story of Pandita Ramabai from the early 1900s was a great example:

Orphaned at a young age, she faced many tragedies early in life. She was partially deaf, a widow, a single mother, and above all only a WOMAN. But she became a social reformer, a woman of faith, a woman of revival, an up-lifter of women, a student of many languages, a Bible translator, and a pioneer.

Pandita had the passion of someone who truly knows the Lord. What about those of us in YWAM or other ministries? In what ways will we make a difference in our society, in our generation?

There were many other outstanding messages, but what stood out the most was one called Three Chairs by Pastor Stanley Mehta.

Referring to Judges 2:6-13, he looked at 3 different generations and “sat” each one in a chair. First chair - Joshua and his generation really knew the Lord and experienced what God had done and focused on the Word. Second chair – A generation that knew about God but had secondhand experience of what the Lord had done and focused on what others said. Third chair - A generation that did not know God,

nor did they know what He had done. They focused on their own feelings.

The Joshua generation was spiritual and had a fresh testimony. They were true believers, had a true relationship with God, and were on-fire for God,

The second generation were carnal, had a stale testimony, were fluctuating believers, were only duty-bound, and they were lukewarm Christians.

The third generation was worldly, had no testimony, were indifferent, cold and unbelieving.

It was an inspiring messsage with a challenging application: YWAM International will celebrate 50th anniversary in 2010, and we already have several generations in YWAM. Are we going to pass on to the next generation a knowledge of God or just a knowledge about God? Are we going to have a true relationship with the Lord, just be duty-bound, or be indifferent? Will we be on fire for the Lord, or grow lukewarm or cold?

As an editor, one must spend hours reading every single word of the text. “I have to show great concentration when reading the editions,” said Pratima. She is the editor of the translation work for Lifeline Plus. As she

read through the articles, the story of Manna House of Prayer, “Prison to Playground,” burned into her memory and heart. It pressed her to pray for the Manna House of Prayer team as they work with the Mumbai red light district women and children. “It was a simple prayer because I realized how wonderful and dangerous this type of work is for the staff,” she shared. Her prayers led her to call Abhay, the ministry director, in order to tell him how much she appreciated their work and to find out their prayer requests. It was a simple step to encourage her Christian brother in the work he does. “We all need this kind of encouragement,” she told the Lifeline Plus team. She thought this would be the end of her involvement, but it was just the beginning.

A while later she was at her church’s ladies group, and the opportunity arose to share about Abhay’s ministry. As Pratima told them about their work, their needs, and the children, she thought the group would simply add Manna House to the daily prayer list. Instead, the ladies suggested that they buy the needed coloring books for the kids at the day care. The pastor’s wife, the group president, approved the funds to pay for the coloring books. Then one woman suggested, “Why not buy crayons?” Another said, “Why not tiffin boxes?” Finally another said, “They need to put the crayons somewhere, so why not pouches for the pencils?” The women’s group funded all these supplies joyfully. Recently a TV has been donated by one of her church member to Abhay’s Ministry.

This still wasn’t the end. Pratima later realized that through her other connections she could help move a few of the girls out of the red light area and place them in a group home. To date, one girl has been removed from the red light area with two more to be moved soon. “I am thankful to God that they will grow up in Jesus,” said Pratima. “What will be their future if we don’t do something? I never thought it would take us so far. I just called Abhay to encourage him. God did the rest.”

Let’s take a lesson from our faithful sister. We can accomplish big things one small step at a time. God will do the rest.

Sis. Pratima is involved in translation and printing of Christian books, networking with YWAM, Mukti Mission and Blessing Youth MissionHer e-mail address is : [email protected]

Our Global Leadership Team invites every YWAMer to memorize Philippians 1:27 to 2:18. Please memorize this passage in your heart language.

YWAM will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2010. We will cel-ebrate worldwide all year long, concluding vwith one mega-event in Kona, Hawaii, USA, from November 29 to December 4, 2010. Loren and Darlene Cunningham, YWAM’s founders,

will be attending celebrations in 50 different locations throughout the year. YWAM bases and operating locations will hold celebrations of their own to thank God for His faithfulness in the past and ask for His leading in the future. One of the program elements of these celebrations involves all of us – we “the people”. Our Global Leadership Team invites every YWAMer to memorize Philippians 1:27 to 2:18. Please memorize this passage in your heart language. This is just one way in which we can all be involved in the celebrations. Some other ideas: Make a DVD to celebrate the 50 years; plan DTS reunions; mobilize people to missions; take advantage of reconciliation opportunities (a “Jubilee year” is a great opportunity to put things right in relationships that have gone wrong); plan community meals and invite friends; set off Crackers; plan a community clean-up event, etc. Can you think of more ideas? Please mail them to us. Also let us know what you are doing to

celebrate YWAM’s 50th aniversary.

If you cannot make it to any of the main celebration locations, don’t be discouraged. Just take initiative and plan a smaller event at your own location. It is a full year of opportunity to celebrate with the YWAM family!

Please join with us as we celebrate 50 years of God’s faithfulness to Youth With a Mission!

Growing up, I was what some may call a nominal Christian. I didn’t truly understand the power of a personal relationship with Jesus. One day a pastor shared the gospel with me, and it was like hearing it for the first time. That day I accepted

Christ as my personal Savior and Lord, which changed the course of my future. Up until that point I had been content to work as a professional truck driver. Not satisfied anymore, I realized that Jesus was calling me to do something different. So, in 2001 I began working in full-time missions. My family and I started a church-planting ministry in Kandhamal district of Orissa, India. It was wonderful working among my people. Our house church grew over the years to include 70 people.

In August of 2008 our lives changed forever. An angry mob of people out to harm Christians attacked our homes. They burned and destroyed anything in their paths. We lost everything, but escaped with our lives. Many of our brothers and sisters lost their lives in the next months of persecution.

God had mercy upon my wife, two children and me, and He brought us, in a miraculous way, to Indore. It was there that we joined the Discipleship Training School (DTS). During this school God met me in a very special way. The teachings about quiet times, hearing the voice of God, intercession, bible study and discipleship brought great change to my life.On my outreach I was able to share these changes and the gospel. We saw many people accept Jesus into their lives.

During the persecution in Orissa many children became homeless and displaced. Observing these needs, the staff working at the Indore base started the Sahara Home. YWAM Indore initially took in 77 children. Today we are caring for 134 children and teaching them about Jesus. We are so happy to be working with the Sahara Home.

My name is Krupa Sindhu Pradhan. I am a full time YWAM Indore staff, and I want to serve God long term in missions.

YWAM leader Mark Anderson and president of the Call2All missions mobilization initiative has announced a new phase in the Call2All Movement aimed at the “emerging generation”.

The event, to be hosted in New Zealand from January 19-22, 2010 is designed to expose the coming generation of world missionaries - children, pre-teenagers and teenagers - to the variety of opportunities to serve God in missions.

Mark says, “The next generation of Christians want to see God’s principles lived out in family life, government, education, media, science, business and the arts. They don’t operate in a limited religious framework but want to be relevant in every area of society. This is what makes them perhaps the most exciting generation in history.”

The New Zealand event is inviting YWAM ministries to participate in the event by adding their opportunities to interactive tents which will focus on prayer, compassion and justice, business in missions and people groupunderstanding, among other interests.

Call2All is a worldwide movement calling the church to a renewed, focused collaborative effort to complete the Great Commission. Call2All is about all nations, all spheres of society and every unreached person everywhere in the world. It is a strategy-centered, action-oriented movement focusing on where the Church is NOT, rather than where it is. Its purpose is not to replace existing ministry but to network, train and focus the body of Christ to fulfill the Great Commission.

Call2All is about engaging Christian leaders in new and more comprehensive strategies.

Call2All is drawing together the Global Church in an unprecedented way to reach the least, the last and the lost.

Call2All convenes Christian leaders in Strategy Congresses and provides new avenues for training to foster a global move of God.
