Index An index is great to have a reference of what is on each page in case you are looking for a very specific topic or piece of work. Also when looking to revise work you can easily look at all the topics and find which one you would like to revise easily.

Highlighters Highlighters are used to making an important piece of work stand out on a page. This might indicating something that needs revising or is specifically important to that page topic.Highlighters can also be used in correlation with a key for example red could equal the most important part of information whereas green might equal something less important..

Prioritise by highlighting the items below that you think are the most important using just one colour:

1. Feed the dog2. Complete your homework due in for two days time3. Watch TV4. Finish your assignment that is due in tonight5. Text your mates6. Revise for your exam in a month’s timeNow use different colour highlighters so that they follow the colour code below and prioritise these tasks again, but now in order of importance:

Red UrgentYellow Can be left until the others are doneGreen Can be left until tomorrow

Using highlighters to get organised and help us make sense of something:

Staying organised can be difficult at first but with a bit practice you’ll soon find that it becomes easier over time. The more you build organisational tasks into your daily routine, the quicker you’ll find that you become more organised.

But what if you haven’t got time to get organised? Good organisation will help you to have more time to do the things you love while still getting your important tasks completed on time. It sounds crazy, but time spent organising yourself properly at the start of the day or perhaps at the start of your homework session will make you more productive and that means getting more done in a shorter time. Not convinced? Let’s look at two different scenarios and compare the two.

Part 1Highlight the parts that tell you how long each task takes.

Part 2

Add up the times to answer the questions at the end of each scenario.

Scenario oneJohn has two hours’ worth of homework to complete. He is totally disorganised and spends twenty minutes trying to find the assignment sheet before he can make a start. He gets halfway through and finds that he can’t work at his desk anymore because it’s so untidy so he starts to tidy up, which takes another ten minutes. He then gets distracted by the cat and decide to play with her for another five minutes before he remembers that he needs to complete his homework. Before he can finish though, his mum calls him down for his dinner which takes thirty minutes to eat.

How long did it take John to finish his homework?

3 hours and 5 mins

Scenario twoSarah also has two hours’ worth of homework to complete. She is very organised and spends the first ten minutes tidying her desk before opening the assignment sheet that she has saved to the correct folder on her Google drive. She then spends a further five minutes planning the homework and finds that she can complete it in just an hour and a half. By the time her cat comes in she’s completed her work and can play with her and spend twenty minutes on the latest COD before she goes down to eat her dinner.

How long did Sarah’s homework take? 1 hour and 45 mins
