This is a big "thank you" to all the artists and Friends of Hollingworth volunteers who made the heART exhibition a major success. The quality of the work on display was the highest we have seen since we started this exhibition in 2018. The people of Hollingworth turned out in large numbers to support their creative neighbours and it was a great village event.

What will 2021 heART of Hollingworth

Bring ?

WWERE YOU THERE ? Christmas 2019 saw many community events in the village organised by Friends of Hollingworth.

The ac vi es began with our first ever lantern parade. Many local organisa ons had spent their evenings designing and making them in order to parade with them down to Treacle Gardens to light the Christmas tree.

It proved really popular and everyone enjoyed mince pies and mulled wine. The youth of the village did us proud with their imagina on and enthusiasm and we hope to make it an annual event perhaps with live music next year.

Our Xmas market was once again a great success despite the awful weather. There were double the number of stalls which displayed a variety of items to browse and purchase. The cafe proved a hit and our thanks to Jenny who provided live entertainment in there.

6

Organised by the Friends of Hollingworth :

The market was followed by the now tradi onal Santa's sleigh ride around the village. Although the first night was cancelled because of heavy rain and high winds Santa did his best to ensure the children were not disappointed on the following two nights.

Finally came the children's party hosted in the Conserva ve Club. Around 60 children of all ages a ended and enjoyed entertainment, games, food and of course Santa put in another appearance to give out his presents.

Sandwiched in between all these events was the A.G.M. of the Friends of Hollingworth where those who came sampled a free, tasty buffet and where the Michael Hargreaves Award was presented to Mary Jessop. She is a worthy winner for all her hard and dedicated work on behalf of the community. The hamper was also drawn too and was won by Chris Parrack with the second prize going to Paul Trafford.

All the ac vi es were well supported and Friends of Hollingworth would like to say a huge thank you to the village for that support and generosity. Monies raised will be put towards future events and we look forward to an equally successful 2020.

Why Easter Eggs ? The egg, an ancient symbol of new life, has been associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring. From a Christian perspective, Easter eggs are said to represent Jesus' emergence from the tomb and resurrection. ... Easter egg hunts and egg rolling are two popular egg-related traditions……..

The decoration of eggs is believed to date back to at least the 13th century, while the rite of the Easter parade has even older roots.

One explanation for this custom is that eggs were formerly a forbidden food during the Lenten season, so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration.

Did you know? The largest Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet high and weighed over 8,000 pounds. It was built out of chocolate and marshmallow and supported by an internal

steel frame. The Origin of the Easter Bunny

The exact origins of the Easter bunny are clouded in mystery. One theory is that the symbol of the rabbit stems from pagan tradition, specifically the festival of Easter—a goddess of fertility whose animal symbol was a bunny. Rabbits, known for their energetic breeding, have traditionally symbolized fertility.

According to some sources, the Easter bunny first arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Their children made nests in which this creature could lay its coloured eggs. Eventually, the custom spread across the U.S. and the fabled rabbit ’s Easter morning deliveries expanded to include chocolate and other types of candy and gifts, while decorated baskets replaced nests. Additionally, children often left out carrots for the bunny in case he got hungry from all his hopping.

MAKES:1 – 12 PREP TIME:0 hours 30 mins COOK TIME:2 hours 15 mins

INGREDIENTS: 175 g soft butter or margarine, plus extra for greasing 175 g light muscovado sugar 3 eggs 175 g self-raising flour 175 g sultanas 90 g currants 90 g glacé cherries, quartered, rinsed, and dried 30 g candied peel, roughly chopped Grated zest of 1 large lemon and 1 tsp. ground mixed spice FOR THE DECORATING: 500 g almond paste 2 tbsp. apricot jam 1 egg white Deep 18 cm (7 in) round loose-bottomed cake tin DIRECTIONS Roll out one-third of the almond paste. Using the base of the cake tin as a guide, cut out an 18 centimetre round. Grease the cake tin and line the bottom and side with greaseproof paper. Combine all the cake ingredients in a bowl. Beat well until thoroughly blended. Spoon half of the cake mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the surface. Top with the round of almond paste. Spoon the remaining cake mixture on top and level the surface. Bake in a preheated oven at 150°C/gas mark 2 for two and a quarter hours or until golden brown and firm to the touch. Cover the top of the cake with greaseproof paper if it is browning too quickly. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the tin, and leave to cool completely. Warm the jam and use to brush the top of the cake. To decorate the cake, roll out half of the remaining almond paste and use the tin to cut out an 18 centimetre round. Put on top of the jam and crimp the edges. Roll the remaining almond paste into 11 even-sized balls. Place around the edge of the cake, attaching them with egg white. Brush the tops of the balls and the almond paste with egg white. Place under a hot grill for one to two minutes, until the balls are golden. Or why not look up a simple recipe for Hot Cross Buns & have a go at making some ?

On Tuesday 8th January 2019 the Eden bus manoeuvred its way into the Gun Inn’s top car park for the first me. The neighbours watched incredulously as the Double Decker bus reversed into the car park (with a 25 point turn!) and switched on its generator, which started the lights and music. The A er School Drop In for Years 7-11 was ready to launch J.

Equally amazing was the presence of a team of 7 people from 5 local churches, commi ed to star ng up the project, each of them willingly giving up Tuesday a ernoons to be available for the high school students of our community. In the Eden Bus, young people would be offered a safe place where they could hang out, find people interested in listening to how their week had been, or to do cra s, to paint nails, endure (or enjoy) Karaoke, or to man the bus’s climbing wall. - And, for 5 minutes in the middle of the session, to share a snippet about how Jesus helps them in everyday life.

As you can see from the pictures the Eden bus is a state of the art mobile youth centre.

Well, over the 10 weeks that we had the bus, we saw approximately 50 young people drop in and out. Some became regulars; others just enjoyed making the most of the facili es now and then. In our first week we had 10 young people, on the last week we had over 30 and those on the top deck felt seasick as the bus rocked!

BUT, the plan was always to use the bus to kick start something more permanent. A er Easter we moved into the community room at St Mary’s Church and a dozen or so young people came with us. Now there is room for pool, table tennis, Croquet on the lawn (!) and indoor archery, as well as computer games, cra , cooking, quizzes, and ‘Tick-Tock’ compe ons. But most significantly: free toast and hot chocolate! A few of the young people have even been on an outward bound weekend with folks from a group in Bolton.

AANNA AT FLOWER POWER

From me to me in past issues of the Flyer we have featured a variety of local businesses and in this edi on we have spoken to Anna who runs a floristry business from her home in the village.

Although not born in Hollingworth she has lived here for nearly 40 years and clearly appreciates the countryside around here and tries to par cipate in village life as much as her me allows. Indeed she is a great supporter of Friends of Hollingworth. She regularly a ends mee ngs and has been generous with her me and exper se at fundraising events.

On leaving school Anna decided that working with flowers was what she wanted to do so she got a job at Irene's florist in Hyde. It was there that she received her training and which cemented her love of flowers. Eventually she le there to branch out for herself and opened her own shop at Crown Point in Denton. She was there for 25 years and loved the kind of work which ensured that every day was different.

When the shop lease finished Anna was not willing to give up the voca on she had followed and thus she made the huge decision to con nue to use her exper se whilst giving her more free me to enjoy village life.

, She is pleased to say that the decision was a posi ve one as her business flourishes and she currently enjoys a far be er work-life balance. Her service offers a bespoke experience in the client’s home and one thing she freely admits is that her personal approach gives her the opportunity to meet and talk to new people as she listens and implements what they want from her knowledge for whatever the occasion. You only need to look at her website (annaa lowerpower.co.uk ) to see that she is able to create arrangements with any flowers, textures and style according to the wishes of the customer. She derives great sa sfac on from producing a pleasing outcome for the client whether the style is tradi onal or contemporary. All her flowers are freshly sourced and she will go the extra mile to ensure her customers are happy with the end result.

Anna says that she has seen the styles of floristry change drama cally over me from the formal wiring of flowers in bouquets and arrangements to the more natural look of today but she con nues to adapt and flourish. So if you want flowers for that special occasion give her a call on 07792590427 or email her at annamacflowerpower @outlook.com. She will be glad to help .

MARCH Its birth flower is the Daffodil (Narcissus) The Anglo-Saxons called the month Hlyd monath which means Stormy month, or Hraed monath which means Rugged month The birthstone for March is the aquamarine. The zodiac signs for March are Aries (March 21 - April 19) and Pisces (February 19 - March 20) The name of March month is named after Mars, the Roman god of war as it was the month in which the military campaigning season got underway after winter. There is a famous quote about this month which states “March comes in a like a Lion and goes out like a Lamb”, which means that winter is ending and spring has started. APRIL April is named after the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. In the Roman calendar, the fourth month April is spelled Aprilis, meaning "to open." Festivals which were planned for April included Parrilla, a day celebrating the founding of Rome. The name Aprilis, then, fits April, because in so many places in the northern hemisphere April is the month when trees and flowers begin to bloom and go on to flower. Two flowers signify the month of April: the daisy and the sweet pea. The daisy symbolizes innocence, loyal love, and purity; but it also means "I'll never tell!" The Diamond Is April's Birth Stone. The zodiac signs for April are Aries (March 21-April 19th), and Taurus (April 20th – May 20th). MAY The birthstone for May is the Emerald which represents success or love. The zodiac signs for May are Taurus (April 20 - May 20) and Gemini (May 21 - June 20). The birth flower for May is the Lily of the Valley and the Hawthorne. May is named after the Greek goddess Maia, and the Roman goddess of fertility Bona Dream. The first day of May is known as “May Day”, and is a time to celebrate the coming of Summer. Some of the traditional English celebrations include Morris Dancing, crowning of a May Queen, and of course, dancing around a Maypole!

My name is Jack Makepeace, I live in Thorncliffe Wood. I am 13 years old and have lived in Hollingworth since I was 3. I a end West Hill School. Previously I went to Hollingworth Primary School. I love all sports, especially rugby. I play for my school and Glossop Rugby club.

This year I have volunteered for a month long charitable project in Cambodia in 2021. Whilst there I will be working on environmental and social projects. The project is being run through Camps Interna onal, a social enterprise that supports teenagers to contribute to society interna onally.

Camps Interna onal work with the local community to iden fy projects that the volunteers will work in When in Cambodia, the projects are works that the local community agree with Camps Interna onal. Already iden fied are schemes to build toilets and kitchens. There are plans to assist in reforesta on work. l will be par cipa ng in clean up on local beaches that are suffering from washed ashore plas c.

To fund my par cipa on I need to raise £4380. I am working with friends from school who are also par cipa ng in the project to fund raise.

I have already raised £876, the first instalment. I achieved this through a wide range of schemes. I collected Christmas trees from the local community for disposal. I have been cooking lunches for nurses at the hospital in which my Dad works. With my friends I have been selling cakes at school.

A er Christmas, with school friends I have been bag packing at Sainsburys's and Marks and Spencer's. I became quite accomplished by the end at fi ng the shopping in neatly without crushing the fruit.

I have made hampers and sold raffle ckets. I have been really grateful for all the support I have received. Lots of local businesses have provided support, the Spice Bistro gave a voucher, Becky Hinchcliffe donated a voucher to be used for in the Hay Lo , gi voucher came from Morrisons. The Booze Box on Market Street have been kind enough to sell the ckets.

My whole family have joined in. My brother Cayden, went busking outside Tesco. My Nanna made handmade Christmas decora ons which I sold around the village. She is now making felt Easter chicks which will be available soon. We have run a stall at local church and school fairs. Steve, from St Mary’s church was kind enough to allow us to use his Sjoele game board at these fairs and they proved to be a huge hit.

I have lots more ac vi es planned to raise the funds for the project. I have more bag packing planned. I am due to be li er picking in the half term with some friends. I am always looking for more odd jobs that I can complete that will raise funds. I know it will be hard but this will a trip of a life me. If you have any odd jobs that I can do or would like to support me in any way then please let me know through my Mum, Susan 07810094523.

If anyone is able to donate then it is possible through my Justgiving page, in my mum’s name; Susan Makepeace.
