I hope your plans for Saturday, November 4th include
the Island House Tour at Kiawah, John’s and
Seabrook Islands, whether visiting or working or
both. Our committee, headed by Becky Hilstad, has
applied hours and imagination to produce one of the
CSOL®’s major fundraising projects. Seven homes
will be open from 10 am to 4 pm, followed by a FREE
concert by the CSO at the East Beach Conference
Center. This concert is underwritten by the Town of
Kiawah Arts & Cultural Events Fund and we can’t say
enough to acknowledge their generosity. The car for
the Car Sponsorship Project is being introduced at
the House Tour. Can’t tell you the make and model at
this time, but it’s a very prestigious one (needless to
say). Come out to Kiawah and purchase your $100
sponsorship tickets. It’s one more way you can
support the League, the CSO and our scholarship
programs. (And maybe win a car).
Our next Coffee Hour with Maestro Ken Lam will be
at 10 am on November 17th. Please come and hear
about the Masterworks to be performed on Friday and
Saturday nights and to socialize with fellow members
and (we hope) your guests. Attending a coffee with a
friend who isn’t a CSOL® member is a great way to
provide friends with a fun morning as well as expose
them to all that the League accomplishes.
The Southeastern Volunteer Orchestra Association
(SOVA) meetings held in Charleston in early October
were hosted by the CSOL®. The sessions were a
huge success thanks to the planning and organization
of Carol Lou Yaeger, assisted by Sue Ingram. Several
CSOL® members made presentations to attendees
who came from Augusta, Charlotte, Columbia,
Greensboro, Greenville, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach
and Salisbury. Everyone came away with new ideas
for making us all even more productive. Forgive me if
I brag a little: We are the oldest of the organizations
and make the most money of them all. The line that I
came away with and I treasure most is: “Volunteerism
Is Not A Spectator Sport.” Be proud of the CSOL® and
your participation.
Seven gorgeous homes are being shown on our Symphony
Tour of Homes on Saturday, November 4 on Kiawah,
Seabrook, and Johns Islands. It’s our biggest tour yet!
Do you have your tickets? It’s not too late to get them. Go
online to www.csolinc.org to purchase and print out tickets.
Stop by Indigo Books at Freshfields Village or the new
Kiawah Town Hall on Betsy Kerrison to buy tickets up until
5:00 p.m. on November 3. Come to Freshfields Village
Green on the morning of the tour and purchase them.
As in the past, there will be music by our scholarship
winners, CSO and local musicians in the houses,
refreshments by a lovely pool at one of the homes, and lots
of knowledgeable docents as guides. Observe the
architectural array of homes, designed and built by some of
the area’s finest architects and builders, complimented by
gorgeous views of the ocean, the Kiawah River where it
meets the sea, vast river marsh, sun-lit dappled woods,
Bohicket Creek, and one of Kiawah’s finest golf courses.
And, as if that weren’t enough to make for an ideal fall day,
at 5:00 pm the CSO will play a masterworks-style concert,
free to all, with a marimba soloist and Ken Lam conducting at
the East Beach Conference Center on Kiawah. The concert
is graciously sponsored by the Town of Kiawah Arts and
Cultural Events Fund. Plan to stay for the concert and then
treat yourself to a fine dinner afterwards at one of the many
nearby restaurants. Bring friends and family and support a
very important CSOL® fundraiser.

Many of us grew up with musicals like West Side Story, Candide and Porgy and Bess -- the music of Bernstein and
Gershwin is iconic. So, the CSOL® couldn’t resist scheduling our annual fundraising party to follow the
Bernstein/Gershwin CSO Pops concert on Thursday, January 18, 2018. And, the music encouraged us to use New
York City neighborhoods as the Gala theme: “Tonight, Tonight!.” It won’t be just any night!
Spend the evening mingling with CSO musicians and your friends while enjoying an abundant and diverse
selection of foods like: Soho Sliders and Pigs in a Blanket from The Village; Salmon or Corned Beef on Challah
Rolls from Mazel St.; Hunan Shrimp with Spring Rolls from Chinatown; or Tortellini and Cannoli from Little
Italy. Add to your dining pleasure by sponsoring a musician/buying them a Gala ticket (along with your tickets).
Bring Your Friends: After you receive your invitation (mid-November) and when you purchase a table for 10, you
simply list your friends’ names/contact information, and your table is reserved. (You can still specify to be seated
with friends even if you don’t have a table of 10). Come right after work (no formal attire required) and begin the
evening with beer or wine while browsing the Silent Auction items. After the concert, continue the evening with a full
bar, varied and plentiful foods, music on the Steinway Spirio, our Live Auction, and Feed the Need, which helps
fund the CSO education programs. Join us -- and what was just a world, is a star. Tickets are l imited to
400, so buy your t ickets soon … the concert is near ly sold out.

The fall series of Revel events kicked off with a concert by
the CSO String Quartet featuring Yuriy Bekker, Jan-Marie
Joyce, Mican Gangwer, and Norbert Lewandowski at the
home of Mike and Gail Maginnis. The Quartet played:
Haydn String Quartet, op. 76, no. 1; Schubert Rosemunde
Quartet, 1st movement; String quartet arrangement of
Smetana’s Moldau and Grieg Norwegian Dances; and the
Puerto Rican Turtle Dance.
For those who needed more than music to feed the soul, in
addition to an array of refreshments (the chicken salad
sandwich merited a shout out), a special treat was cookies
shaped and artfully decorated as musical instruments.

Sounds of Nature: Yuriy and Friends
Thanks to Gail Maginnis and Caroline Thibault for hosting this terrific event.
"A long time ago in a galaxy far,
far away …” On October 21,
2017, the CSOL® Instrument
Petting Zoo (IPZ) at the
Calhoun Library featured the
Star Wars theme.
As twenty-five men and women marched into the
gathering of families with children dressed in Star
War costumes, little eyes grew round with awe at the
characters coming alive before their eyes. "Neat"
was one comment. (Older child, of course.)
And then the fun
began: Children and
parents went to IPZ tables
manned by CSO members
and three Youth Orchestra
members. Lydia Pless and
her friend exemplify how
our scholarship winners
help the CSOL® “Inspire
the love of music for
generations to come.”

(Read more about Lydia in the article on this
page about the Youth Orchestra.)
Members of the Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra fully
understand the concept of Pay It Forward. As mentioned in the
other article on this page, three members of the Youth
Orchestra dedicated a Saturday morning to help CSOL®
Education Committee members hold a Petting Zoo,
demonstrating how to play string, woodwind and percussive
instruments. And while we’re all busy, consider the generosity
of hardworking students willing to give time on a weekend --
when Sunday afternoons mean three-hour rehearsals at the
Charleston County School of the Arts.
Lydia Pless, a sophomore at the Charleston County Academic
Magnet, who has studied cello for seven years, has started
her third year performing with the CSYO and won a
scholarship from the CSOL® this year. She joined the orchestra
as an eighth grader, the same year as her brother, who is 2
years her senior. Karl plays violin and will be co-concert
master for the upcoming concert on November 19th.
Hayley Cash, a junior at the Academic Magnet, has started
her second year in the CSYO. She has studied violin privately
for a dozen years. Hayley finds the CSYO a terrific way to
spend time with a great community of people, welcoming the
opportunity to build her repertoire.
Mion Smith, a seventh grader at Rollings School of the Arts in
Dorchester County, has begun her first year with the CSYO as
a violinist. Before she first auditioned for the CSYO as a sixth
grader, she had auditioned for Regionals and All-State, the
first year that she could do so. Mion made both last year,
which gave her an experience playing with an orchestra. Last
month she again made Regionals and will try for All-State this
winter. Mion appreciated the new orchestra retreat as a team-
building experience which allowed her to make new friends
before her first rehearsal as well as to meet the conductor for
the first time. Last year Mion played at the CSOL® Designer
House with her mother, CSO violinist Mayumi Smith. Her
father is the orchestra’s Executive Director.
The CSOL® invests in these students’ lives – and we are
amply repaid. Come and enjoy hearing all the talented
members of the Charleston Symphony Youth
Orchestra on Sunday November 19th at 3:30 pm in the
Lightsey Chapel of Charleston Southern University.

Ken Lam speaking about Beethoven
Ken Lam Wows At First Lecture In Series The CSO sounds wonderful because Maestro Ken Lam is at the helm. But did you
know he’s a brilliant teacher as well? If you’ve attended the pre-concert lectures at
some of the Masterworks concerts or the CSOL® Coffees with the Maestro, you’ve
caught a glimmer. But for twenty-two fortunate people who attended the first
Classes with Ken on October 14 as part of Revels, he was a true beacon.
Attendees commented that Ken’s insights into the score and the sound of
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony were completely illuminating. Don’t miss the
Classes with Ken on January 13 and March 3 – sign up now!
