Welcome to

About the Registered Remodelor’s Council

In 1976 the Home Builders Associ-ation of Louisville (HBAL) found-ed the Remodelor’s Council in order to strengthen the awareness of professional remodelers and to raise the image of the profession as a whole.

As Registered Remodelors must meet stringent requirements that set them apart from the average remod-

eler, clients can take heart in know-ing that when they hire a Registered Remodelor they are working with a professional that is striving to be bet-ter than the rest. As we head into the new century remodeling will be on the upswing. It is important for you to make sure that the person you en-trust the safety, image, and security of your home is someone you can trust. In order to ensure that you are deal-ing with a professional, Registered Remodelors must meet the following requirements. For more information about the Remodelor’s Council or for a list of Registered Remodelors highlighting their areas of expertise, call 502.429.6000 or visit our web site at http://www.hbal.com.

Saturday & Sunday August 15–16 12 noon to 6 p.m. both days$10 adults, Children- 6 and under free

The objectives of this renovation were 1) to in-corporate features of accessibility which would allow the owner’s parents to age-in-place; 2) improve the energy efficiency and comfort of the home; 3) preserve the home’s historic char-acter and continuity. Full Spectrum met these goals by integrating a 3-story addition contain-ing a four stop elevator in a back corner of the original home that provides easy passage to each floor of the home. Though most of the materials are modern, attention to details allows the fiber-cement siding, PVC trim, fiberglass door, and copper roof of the addition to blend with the existing structure and result in a sustainable exterior that is unaffected by insects, will not rot, and is extremely durable. The proportions and place-ment of new windows in the elevator shaft mimic windows covered by the addition and a restored third floor window moved to the entry vestibule help maintain visual continuity with the original structure. Textured brick pavers promote drainage and form a sloped, step-free access into the ground level vestibule that provides a separate yet pro-tected entrance to the elevator. The installation of expanding foam insulation, custom cabine-try, automated lighting, keypad entry, and con-tinuation of brick pavers make the interior of the vestibule comfortable, secure, and low-maintenance. The elevator and landings combine the old and the new to create a natural transition to the living space of each floor. Ample lighting, controlled by motion sensors, supply plenty of light for dimming eyesight, eliminates the need for arthritic (or full) hands to grope for switches, and prevents preoccupied (or forget-ful) minds from leaving the lights on. Wood paneling, trim work, and flooring details match features found throughout the rest of the house making it difficult to identify the ex-tent of renovations and even harder to remem-ber the retrofitted and cramped kitchenette and laundry closets that were removed. The parents’ third floor master bathroom was gutted and updated to include a comfort-height toilet and a curbless shower with a rain head shower and multiple niches. The addition of an adjustable height hand-shower allows an

aide to assist a bather with limited mobility and makes the shower easier to clean. A frameless shower enclosure, large mirror, recessed linen cabinet, and the many lights keep the moder-ately sized space feeling open. The restored window, radiator, and pedestal sink, combined with new mosaic and subway tile preserve the historic character. Updated HVAC systems and expanding foam insulation in the attic improve the energy effi-ciency and comfort throughout the house, take advantage of current tax credits, and reduce am-bient noise from passing airplanes. A flexible and durable roof coating preserves the look of the metal roof on the existing home and front porch and can extend the service life of these original roofs indefinitely. Additional modifi-cations, system updates, storage solutions, and

maintenance implemented across the property, as well as a redesigned courtyard fountain, fur-ther contribute to a personalized, functional, adaptable, and aesthetically pleasing product that will cost-effectively address the multi-generational needs of its occupants for years to come.

Comfort and charm abound in this home re-modeled by The Kiel Thomson Company. Opening up the kitchen and adding an adja-cent hearth room provided a space with dis-tinctive character and the functionality the ho-meowners desired. The new kitchen is set off by a walnut butch-er block island that’s designed for entertaining. It includes wine storage, an ice maker and a liquor drawer. A distressed black iron light fix-ture hangs above the island. Additional storage is provided by a new pantry. Belgian waffle with honey glazed cabinets are topped with Golden River granite. Thomson installed quarter sawn oak floors in the kitchen and hearth room to match those elsewhere in the house. A new wood burning fireplace with a gas starter is the focal point of the hearth room that includes an entertainment

center and a home office. The window that had opened onto the backyard was removed and re-placed with French doors that lead to the new flagstone patio. Other changes on the first floor include a window in the powder room that was innova-tively converted to a medicine cabinet. A new inlay floor in the sunroom coordinates with the floor in the living room. The new addition houses a vaulted ceiling second floor bedroom and a separate heating and cooling system for that level. A former bed-room was transfigured into a dressing room that connects the master bedroom and bath. The Kiel Thomson Company’s renovation is es-pecially notable for its use of energy efficient and recycled material. Most materials were obtained within 500 miles of Louisville. He used closed cell insulation on the entire addition. All trim, doors

and most building materials are recycled. Stucco was applied to the exterior of the ad-dition to seamlessly blend with the house’s ex-isting façade. The two story addition features a slate roof and copper gutters.

What was once a typical garage is now a great fam-ily room/exercise studio, designed and executed by Landis and architect Tim Winters, in this High-lands Tudor style home that’s only a couple of blocks from scenic Cherokee Park. Landis began the remodel project in the fam-ily room by boxing in one supporting concrete beam and adding a second false beam to give vi-sual balance. Triple simulated divided light doors were chosen to replace the existing garage door, and a pocket door and a true divided light door leading into the exercise room were added. Wider casings were placed on the doors and windows. A hardwood floor was installed in the family room and a rubber floor was laid in the exercise room. An arch was created to hide ductwork, and a bookcase was built. In the entertaining/bar room, closets were placed on either side of the back bar to conceal ductwork, and an arch was built as another archi-tectural feature. The diamond caming leaded glass windows in the bar cabinetry as well as in the exte-rior windows in the room reflect the Tudor design of the home. An island with a granite countertop and brass foot rail functions as a bar. The same granite is used on the back bar. Appliances include a GE dishwasher and microwave, and U-Line re-frigerator and beverage center. The interior remodel of the board and batten entertaining/bar area also involved adding hearth-stones to the existing fireplace and finishing the walls in an Old World Italian plaster application. Adjacent to the entertaining space is a landing area in which the stairs were reworked, the hand-rail was replaced and new balusters and newel posts were added. Landis created a wine rack un-der the stairs. A new bathroom with a glass enclosed shower, hardwood floors, open linen shelves, and a copper sink completes the lower level space.

The owners of this ranch style home wanted an open floor plan with a larger, modernized kitchen, and larger and more up-to-date bath-rooms. Kruse Allison built a fluted case opening from the living room to the kitchen. In the liv-ing room they constructed bookcases on either side of the fireplace to which they added a new mantel and tile surround. Kruse Allison skillfully elevated the windows and removed a wall to design a larger eat-in kitchen that looks into the family room. The kitchen is open and airy, yet has a warm atmo-sphere that’s largely attributable to its staggered

rich maple cabinets from Southern Kitchens with a cherry finish and lighting that’s provided by recessed and under counter lighting as well as a paddle fan light. Southern Kitchens as-sisted the homeowners with choosing a quartz countertop that perfectly coordinates with the cabinets and floor. Appliances include a GE cooktop and oven, double door refrigerator, an Advantium microwave and a Fisher Paykel dish-washer. Blinds between the glass offer shade and privacy to the new vinyl windows. The homeowners’ wish for a more modern master bath was granted with the redesigned space that has a marble shower, pedestal sink,

comfort height toilet and ceramic tile floor. A wall was removed to enlarge a hall bath that now has a whirlpool tub and a pedestal sink.

Windows: Glayco; Cabinets: Southern Kitchens; Appliances: Trend Companies of Kentucky; Plumbing: Graeter Plumbing and East End Plumbing Supply; Countertops: American Bluegrass Marble; Flooring: Bluegrass Flooring; HVAC: Zipper Heating and Air; Paint: Hikes Point Paint & Wallpaper.

The homeowners of this two story home want-ed to retain its traditional character but update it to more fully meet the needs of the family. Because the kitchen and breakfast area are cen-tral to the life of the family, much of the reno-vation project focused on these areas. A vaulted ceiling with recessed lighting emphasizes the spaciousness of the kitchen. Glazed cherry cabinets surround an antique black island that has a 6-burner Monogram cooktop and dish-washer. Granite countertops are finished with an OG edge. The completely redesigned kitch-en also includes stainless steel double ovens, a second dishwasher, pull-out trash container, Advantium oven, a warming drawer, and a wine

cooler. Fixtures are by Kohler. In the kitchen, a roll top desk serves as a home office, bringing dual functionality to space. The sunroom, dining room, family room, kitchen and powder room were decorated by Beth Baker Interior Design. Carl Baker’s renovation also includes a break-fast area and a bar in the family room. Respond-ing to the homeowners’ request for a deck that fit their entertaining needs and was very low maintenance, Baker designed and built a multi-level Trex deck off the breakfast area and kitch-en. The deck has a built-in hot tub and seating for outdoor entertaining and is individualized by a powder coated wrought iron railing. .

Unlike some garages which appear to be an afterthought of design, this home’s garage has a commercial grade rubber floor and oak stairs that lead into the house.

This stunning French Provincial style remodel artfully coalesces the work of Michael Pfeifer, architect Tim Winters and interior designer Ju-lie Varga Hale. Studied attention to detail begins in the foy-er and continues throughout the remodeled ar-eas. The original curved staircase was removed and rebuilt to maximize space in the foyer. The foyer’s 18’ high ceiling is made more promi-nent by the use of 14’ high wainscoting that consists of panels and friezes. Accents of brown marble individualize the travertine floor. Pfeifer replaced the gathering area’s bay door system with three sets of French entry doors. The impressive wooden beams in the ceiling were salvaged from a barn built in the 1840s, and run from the gathering area into the kitch-en. Wide plank oak floors perfectly enhance the earth tones in the room. One of the home’s many unusual features is the rear staircase’s archway.

The hip vaulted ceiling in the great room is treated with wood coffered beams, wood panel-ing and a skylight. The fireplace was rebuilt and now includes a mantel that was recovered from the same barn as were the beams. Above the fireplace is a plasma screen TV that is concealed by an oil painting by Vision Art. The artwork may be electronically raised to reveal the televi-sion. A window in the great room looks into a new Old World style temperature controlled 160 bottle wine cellar. A hallway connects the library, wine cellar and great room. The walls of the library were refinished and darkened, and a new hardwood floor was added. The completely remodeled kitchen has an island and refreshment center that serves as a breakfast area. The 1 ¾” walnut countertop pro-vides a beautiful focal point to the kitchen. The room’s design is further carried out by 15” deep weathered French gray cabinets, some of which

have wire mesh fronts and backlighting, Ty-phoon Green granite countertops, and a stone hood with corbels, a backsplash of tumbled stone with accent stripes, and satin nickel hard-ware. Space saving amenities include specially designed spice shelves built into the island, drawer dividers, two Lazy Susans and a pull out base pantry that is accessible from two sides.

Additional interior furnishings: Dwellings and Anabel’s Oriental Rugs; Vision Art: Crawford Entertainment; Windows: Architectural Window-Door Center; Stone Kitchens; Appliances: Trend Companies of Kentucky; Flooring: Lanham Hardwood Flooring; Lighting: Brecher’s Lighting; Hardware: Willis Klein, Trim and Doors: PC Building Supply; Hood: Euro Cast; Granite: Designs in Stone; Backsplash: Mees Tile & Marble; Hardware: Classic Brass; Plumbing fixtures: Plumbers Supply; Landscape Designer: Chris Tinsley

The owners of this 1 ½ story Country French home in Hurstbourne presented an intriguing challenge to Ron Petaja: design and build a covered porch and an area for entertaining that was cozy and casual but large enough to have a kitchen and a comfortable flow. Petaja removed the existing high maintenance deck system, siding and cornice and extended the roof line 16 ‘ to create a vaulted ceiling cov-ered porch that blocks the western sun that over-heats the area. An atrium sliding door with a roll screen separates the home’s breakfast area from the new porch and extensive patio and terrace. Two quarter circle windows in the gable bring light into the porch and add visual interest. Foam roof insulation minimizes the build up of heat during the summer. Azek bead board

ceiling and trim were selected for the porch cor-nice to prevent deterioration. A paddle fan light and outdoor lanterns on the back of the house provide ambient lighting. One of the primary objectives was to design the porch to complement the architecture of the house and surrounding homes. Petaja’s en-gineering and construction expertise were inte-gral to the installation of an anchor system that mounts the columns into the foundation. Hardie board siding was placed on the back of the house to tie in with the appearance of the porch. An expansive patio area with um-brella tables and a second seating area with an outdoor kitchen are used for the homeowners’ frequent entertaining. Open stonework of two colored stones of various sizes and shapes were

Windows: Metro Window; Hardscape: Bladecutters; Roll screen: Phantom Screens of Kentucky. Carpentry: Brian Bell Enterprises

combined with accent pieces to create varie-gated color and texture. The terracing connects existing doorways and the grade system. A walk-way surrounding the patio and picture-perfect landscaping complete the idyllic setting.

When the new homeowner consulted John Mi-randa and Chris Knopf, partners in Pinnacle Properties of Louisville, LLC, about totally re-modeling this St. Matthews home, he explained that he wanted to save the structure and main-tain the integrity of the original house instead of demolishing it even though massive rebuild-ing and renovation were required. Pinnacle Properties enlarged the 1300 sq. ft. 3 BR/1 ½ bath home to an Energy Star rated 1,500 sq. ft. with 2 ½ baths on the first two floors and an additional 600 square feet with one full bath in the finished walk-out lower level. This full home remodel encompassed removing all HVAC, water, gas and sewer lines, and installing a high efficiency HVAC system, as well as all new water and sewer lines and all new electric system.

Pinnacle had to tear out damaged framing materials and added necessary structural sup-port while erecting new walls, including studs and drywall, and new floors, including joists and subfloor. The roof was removed and re-placed with plywood and dimensional shin-gles. Beautiful hardwood floors, ceramic tile and carpet were placed over ¾” plywood floors throughout the house. The project also involved the installation of new windows and doors. Pin-nacle rebuilt the mantel and hearth in order to preserve this historical piece in the living room. The former half bath on the first floor was con-verted to a full bath. On the second floor, Pin-nacle reconfigured the space to accommodate a modified Jack and Jill bathroom, two walk-in closets and a space for a washer and dryer.

New maple cabinets with an espresso finish were paired with Giallo Napoleon granite coun-tertops in the kitchen. GE Profile appliances and recessed lighting complete the aesthetically pleasing and highly functional kitchen. A 2 ½ car garage was built in back of the house. A new patio area was created to accom-modate grilling and outdoor entertaining.

Bill Bruenderman’s challenge was to make a small 1 ½ story house slightly larger and much more livable and efficient for a young family. The project began by decreasing the size of the screened porch and expanding the foyer and the entry into the family room. French doors now lead to the screened porch. Redesigning the cabinetry around the family room fireplace made it more of a focal point of the room. Converting a bedroom to a din-ing room, then constructing columns and an arched opening from the living room to the dining room masterfully created a more spa-cious feel to the main living area that includes a new kitchen. The first floor’s existing hardwood floors were refinished and new oak floors were laid in the kitchen. A vaulted ceiling with skylights fills the kitchen with natural light. The kitchen fea-tures GE appliances, including a double oven in the black finish bead board island accented with a Venetian Gold countertop. A hall was extended to a new master suite that consists of a bedroom with his and her closets and a bathroom with a large show-er. Bathroom cabinetry with a black rubbed through finish coordinates beautifully with the black and white tile floor. The powder room received a new color palette, cabinetry and lighting, allowing the room’s interior to better reflect the décor of other rooms in the house. Bruenderman added siding to the addition and accented the gable ends with fish scale siding. The project also included the construction of a patio used by the family for outdoor enter-taining and a two car garage.

I had six dif-ferent kitchen designers and cabinet builders come to my house and listen to my ideas. Three of them actually measured everything, but not one ever got back to me with any type of work-able design. I was just about to give up when I found Southern Kitchens. Jen-ny listened to all of my ideas (as well as those of my three daughters’) and was able to create the kitchen of our dreams. She was so patient and ac-commodating. Even though nothing we wanted was “standard”, she never seemed to be intimidated and worked tirelessly to suit all of our needs. 3214 Beals Branch Road, 40206New exterior, front and rear addition, and interior remodel including a new kitchen and mudroom

Pat Wissing worked with architect Matthew Triplett to update the exterior of this contempo-rary ranch and to create an open floor plan that in-vited a comfortably sophisticated interior design. The objective of bringing the home into 21st cen-tury design suggested replacing the Bedford Stone exterior with a classic yet slightly urbane stucco. Intricate trim and new casement windows en-hanced the striking exterior. Both the front and rear additions are a concrete slab on grade. Wissing and Triplett raised the roof to make a vaulted foyer. The industrious use of LVL rafters and beams were integral to the open floor plan. An entry with columns was added and the wall of the existing dining room was removed. Beautifully rich red oak floors were installed

throughout the first floor. The chicly sleek new kitchen, highlighted by three skylights, epitomizes the home’s new con-temporary design. A slate-like floor, laid in a pin-wheel pattern, perfectly coordinates with the flush maple cabinetry that has a Galaxy Granite coun-tertop extending to a breakfast bar. A wet bar and wine storage are built into the cabinetry. Light-ing is provided by pendant and recessed lighting. Stainless steel appliances include a GE Monogram refrigerator and double ovens, and a Profile cook-top and dishwasher. A vaulted ceiling and four uplit niches in the interior vaulted gables instill drama into the great room. Wissing modified the fireplace, adding a mahogany mantel and flanked it with maple built-

Working with a mandate to maximize a small space while not changing the footprints of the rooms, Insuramax brought a 1920’s house to new life without sacrificing intimate spaces or stylish new amenities.

The home is a work of functional artistry, be-ginning in the living room where the fireplace was refaced with a natural stone veneer above a black granite hearth. New crown was chosen for its clean, simple ornamentation. Heat registers

were rerouted to take up minimal space. The original dining room was converted to a library with bookcases built around the perim-eter of the room. It opens onto a sunroom that was redesigned from a former porch. Form meets function in high style in the kitchen that has an angular peninsula, white Mission style cabinets, black honed granite countertops, a tile and marble backsplash and paneled appliances. Insuramax removed a 1960’s addition from the back of the house and built a new family room that has a shallow coffered ceiling, cus-tom cabinetry and a radiant heat natural stone floor like that on the back walk and patio. The corner banquette is both an ingenious use of space and an aesthetically engaging element of the room that is balanced by a wood burning fireplace and seating area. Adjacent to the fami-ly room is a full bath with custom stainless steel shower pan, unique paneled walls, and radiant heat in floors and walls. The second floor was reconfigured from three bedrooms and a bathroom to a tranquil master suite with a spa-like bathroom. Swing out windows open onto the back porch that overlooks a gorgeous courtyard with a pond, and carriage house. The design, trim, and accents of the new carriage house match those of the main house. The carriage house has a 2 ½ car garage and workshop, living area with a gas fireplace, bath and a double loft. It will also have a kitchen. The exterior facelift included fiber cement siding, copper roofing, and new gutters. Also added were insulation and housewrap and en-ergy efficient tankless water heaters.

This 2-story Colonial house teems with family activities after Promaster Contracting’s struc-tural and aesthetic renovations. The first change is evident at the new front door that brings in more light to the entry. The stairway landing and a closet were removed in order to enlarge the hallway. Hardwood was laid to blend in with the existing floor. The doorway from the dining room to the kitchen was repositioned and a butler’s pantry and powder room were added. The kitchen was relocated and designed to open up to the fam-ily room. White chocolate Medallion cabinets, some with glass fronts, have Absolute Black honed granite countertops and are accessorized with nickel hardware. Cabinetry includes a built-in closet pantry. A 6-burner Bertazoni

cooktop with a Monogram automatic down-draft hood is installed in the island that has a Kashmir countertop. Other appliances include two GE Profile ovens, a refrigerator with double drawer freezers and a dishwasher. Recessed and under cabinet lighting supply ambient and task lighting. Adjoining the kitchen is a breakfast area in a bay window that overlooks the deck. A new mudroom leads from the kitchen to the garage. The original walls of the family room were moved to make a more spacious room distinc-tive for its brick hearth fireplace surrounded by cabinetry. Promaster installed bookcase col-umns that cleverly conceal DVDs. On the second floor, a new master bathroom boasts white cabinets, a tile floor and a shower

with dual showerheads. A second bathroom was designed with white beadboard and wain-scoting, black and white tile and a vanity with extra storage. The renovation project also involved replac-ing all windows with Andersen products.

David Westfall called upon the expertise of ar-chitect J. Adger Stewart & Pete Stone of Stone Kitchens to design a new kitchen and family room that would add panache and style to this Indian Hills home while complementing the existing house. Mr. Westfall’s execution of the architectural plans resulted in the reconfiguration of the for-mer kitchen into a laundry room. An old brick arch that was uncovered during the creation of a new powder room was integrated into the de-sign of the room that exudes a revitalized char-acter with an art glass window, built-in cabine-try, wood floor and a fretwork vanity. An innovative application of a galley/L shaped kitchen separates the kitchen from the family room, yet the coffered ceiling brings

symmetry to the room, camouflages the steel beams and unites the kitchen and family room. The classically elegant kitchen is character-ized by Provine’s Poplar Velvet White cabinets with honed Jet Mist granite countertops and a vintage subway tile backsplash. GE Monogram appliances and a large hammered nickel farm sink make it an impressively functional culinary center. Built-in bookcases, a masonry fireplace, and a wet bar with a wine and beverage center and icemaker give the kitchen/family room/break-fast room a cozy, inviting ambience. New An-dersen French doors and double hung windows offer a view of the large yard and open onto a Bluestone terrace and breezeway. Energy saving features included radiant floor

heat in the family room and powder room, foam spray insulation and a new top-of-the line boiler system. Cosmetic changes to the house involved painting and wallcovering the foyer, and painting the living room and office.

Renovation of this authentic Dutch Colonial home began with the removal of the deterio-rated siding. Period siding and very old looking brick gave new life to the exterior. A redesign of the kitchen allows for an easier and more efficient work flow, increased cabi-net space, and a more open feel. Floor to ceil-ing cabinets provide storage galore and conceal a television when not in use. The center island has a bar and a Wolf cooktop. Other appliances include a Jenn Air refrigerator and double ovens and a GE microwave. White marble atop white

cabinets and hardwood floors establish an un-derstated style against the backdrop of red walls. The door to the dining room was replaced with a paned glass door. Steps leading to the basement were carpeted. Tectonics enclosed the ductwork in the base-ment, repaired drywall, installed black and white tile, replaced the windows and updated the shower and powder room. Once a rarely uti-lized space, it is now used as an exercise room and as an area in which to watch television and enjoy family activities.

One of the biggest challenges that David Ra-teau faced when remodeling this 1½ story tra-ditional home was that the homeowners were living out of town, necessitating a great deal of long distance communication regarding selec-tion of materials and the various facets of the remodeling process. The extensive remodeling encompassed the removal of the former formal dining room, converting the kitchen into a large laundry room and powder room, adding a kitchen that opens into a family room, and transforming the sunroom into a dining room. In addition, new windows and doors were installed throughout the first floor. A full masonry wood burning fireplace with a custom mantel painted to match the wood-work creates a warm and inviting atmosphere

in the family room. A large tray ceiling, cabinets and bookcases on either side of the fireplace, and crown molding customize the space that overlooks a golf course. The random width oak floor unites the family room and kitchen. The dining room, with all new windows and doors that also look out onto the golf course, has a ceramic tile floor and pocket doors that separate it from the kitchen. Designed to be open and spacious, the kitch-en features traditional painted cabinets with granite countertops and an island of the same type of cabinetry. Unlike many cooktop hoods, this kitchen’s hood was built as an integral part of the cabinetry, not as a separate unit. Between the kitchen and family room is a breakfast area. The new tiled floor laundry room is large enough to accommodate a work area and an

abundance of storage. Ceramic tile combined with a vanity that re-sembles a piece of furniture add to the interest-ing aesthetics of the powder room. Rateau’s remodel of this home included green building practices and energy saving features such as Eagle windows and doors, Icynene foam insulation, and Low VOC paints and varnishes.

Carl Baker designed and constructed a Pilates studio that could later function as a 2-car ga-rage or an entertainment area, depending on the wishes of future homeowners. A tile floor entry leads into the studio that has central air as well as a hydro heating system that is tied into the air handler. Mirrored walls increase the spaciousness of the room. Weath-ershield windows on two sides of the room and the architectural detail of a hip vault ceil-ing with a widow’s watch infuse the room with light. The rubber floor, ideal for the exercise

studio, is strong enough to handle the weight of cars if the space is one day converted to a garage. Off the studio is a slate tile floor powder room and dressing area. French doors open from the house’s main liv-ing area onto the new front porch that has a brick with limestone border floor and a bead board ceiling. The new front and back patios feature interlocking pavers. Baker also built an entrance to the kitchen vestibule.

Interior Design: Marcia Fackler Designs; Interior design and finishes: owner; Lighting: Corrigan Elec-tric; Windows: K-I Lumber & Building Materials; Cabinets: Classic Kitchens; Appliances: GE; Granite: Bella Stone.

The homeowners wanted a new kitchen to take center stage of their remodeled house with an open floor plan. Fackler built out the back of the house to accommodate the expanded kitch-en, and added a sunroom, powder room and laundry room. The kitchen’s new black finish and Uba Tuba granite countertop island is often the gathering place for friends as dinner is being prepared. Other cabinetry in the kitchen area, some of which accommodates a home work station, has a cream finish that invites the color introduced through paint, fabrics and accessories to stand out. GE appliances include a panel refrigerator, double ovens and a six burner cooktop. A tiled backsplash above the cooktop provides anoth-er element of texture to the room. Fackler installed a casing around the door

from the kitchen to the dining room and added French doors leading from the dining room to the sunroom. Simulated divided light windows in the brick floor sunroom give the feeling of bringing the outdoors in. Painted and French country cottage furniture, flowers and greenery imbue the space with a casual elegance that makes frequent visitors feel right at home. The open ambience continues with the ad-dition of French doors from the kitchen to the screened porch that has a slate floor and an all weather beadboard ceiling. The doorway to the living room was also enlarged to create a great room. Artistic talent is evident in the powder room where the homeowner handpainted the walls in red, cream and gold stripes. Black distressed cabinetry with granite countertops contribute

to the room’s sophisticated design statement. Even the laundry room, which now has an outside entrance, is dressed up with a black metal chandelier. Although the majority of the remodel effort focused on the home’s interior, it also involved adding new moldings and trim to the front of the house.

Bill BruendermanBruendermanConstruction&Remodeling,Inc.316 Tucker Station Rd.Louisville, KY 40243502.244.0710WJBruenderman @bellsouth.net

Following an initial gutting of this outdated Colonial house, Bill Bruenderman’s impressive two story addition and extensive renovations created the ideal home for a busy family. The coffered ceiling kitchen on the first floor of the addition is a dream come true for a home chef. GE Appliances blend perfectly with custom made ivory cabinets with a coffee glaze accen-tuated with Absolute Black granite countertops, an island of brown glazed maple cabinets and Venetian gold granite, and a ceramic tile floor. The original kitchen was transformed into a laundry room that also has space for lockers. Adjacent to the kitchen, the family room renovation included built-in bookcases and re-working the facing and mantel of the fireplace. The casual ambience of the family room, new

kitchen, and breakfast area makes the space the heart of the home. Design touches such as a chair rail, wain-scoting and crown molding in the dining room turned an uninspired space into a lovely room for dinners and special occasions. The second floor addition showcases a mas-ter bedroom and bath, with expanded and en-hanced walk-in closets, and a fourth bedroom. The addition also enabled Bruenderman to re-design the existing spaces to include two bath-rooms and new layouts and amenities for the other children’s bedrooms. The master bath-room’s custom cherry cabinets with a black rubbed-through finish and white marble coun-tertops, double sinks, a whirlpool tub, glass en-closed shower and separate water closet make it

a haven for relaxation or starting the day. Not all of Bruenderman’s attention was fo-cused on the house’s interior. What was former-ly a glassed porch is now a screened porch de-tailed with a bead board ceiling and porcelain tile floor.

Visionary design and exquisite embellishments distinguish the addition and renovations of this two-story traditional house. A foyer of Jerusalem stone inlaid with brass caboshons and hand-carved newel posts on the stairs hint at the luxuriousness that is exhibited throughout the home. Steve Sebastian widened the opening from the foyer and installed steps into the living room to better present the room’s 8” plank wal-nut floor and beautiful design elements. Artfully crafted maple cabinetry, elegant woodworking on the cooktop hood and a strik-ing chandelier meld to create a kitchen of four star design. The chef’s kitchen features a 48” Wolf range with a pot filler and specially designed spice storage, Sub-Zero refrigerator and refrigera-tor drawers, and a Sharp drawer microwave. The hearth room was extended from 15’ to 30’. A barrel ceiling with cove lighting and a

cherry mantel wall with a Capolavoro granite surround and fireplace instill the room with dra-ma. The room overlooks a new outdoor roofed entertaining area that has a stone fireplace and Hartstone floor with granite inserts. Lavish land-scaping borders the newly added space. The extensively renovated master suite is on the home’s second floor. An imported Russian chandelier softly illuminates the bedroom’s vaulted ceiling that has three piece crown mold-ing with cove lighting, and a custom fireplace mantel and granite hearth. Sebastian dropped the ceiling of the master bath in order to ring crown molding around the room. Amenities in-clude a heated travertine stone tile floor with granite inlays, a spa shower and a whirlpool tub with an inlaid granite backsplash. The ceil-ing of the second upstairs bathroom also has a lowered ceiling in the shower area to carry two layers of crown molding in front of the shower.

The walls and floors are travertine, with the walls having multiple stone trim accents.

One of the best things about living in Louis-ville is enjoying seasonal changes. This conser-vatory built by Patio Enclosures extended the living area of the house and enables the hom-eowners to enjoy the beauty of every season in climate controlled comfort. The project began by removing the bay window in the kitchen as well as the hot tub at the back of the house. Patio Enclosures added a wood foundation and a decorative stamped concrete patio sur-round. A zoneline heating and cooling unit was installed. Details such as the roof crest and finial con-tribute to the elegance of the Victorian style conservatory that has an advanced aluminum core that provides structural support and dura-bility. Thermally efficient, pure vinyl encloses

the strength of galvanized steel for a structur-ally sound, virtually maintenance free room. Clay color vinyl siding matches the trim on the home. Casement windows are energy efficient tempered Comfort-Gard C3 Low-E glass with a friction-hinged cam locks, night vents and re-tractable screens. Two fully sculptured French doors have a six-point safety locking system. Rope and rosebud crown molding provides tasteful detailing on the interior. The conservatory is so spacious that family and guests enjoy a living area that includes both a bar and another seating area. Steps down from the conservatory is a patio that overlooks a large yard, both of which are ideal for entertaining and plenty of outdoor games and fun.

Lighting: Corrigan Electric; Windows: Pella Windows; Garage Door: Cunningham Overhead Door & Windows

Sometimes a man just has to have his own ref-uge in the home, a place he can call his own and where he can indulge himself…a man cave! This homeowner wanted his man cave to reflect his interests of golf, hunting and bridge. Don Jen-kins interpreted his wishes in a way that makes the new addition welcoming to women as well as men, and surely makes the homeowner the envy of his friends and neighbors. The star of the 690 sq. ft. man cave located at the back of the traditional walk-out ranch home is a golf simulator that projects 3-D im-ages of 36 golf courses from around the world. Using real balls and the correct golf club for a particular shot, a player hits the ball into the screen and can then track club head speed, ball speed, direction and distance along with ad-justing for calm to windy and dry to wet con-

ditions. Extensive intricate electrical wiring was required to accommodate the simulator as well as a new security system. Carpeting was installed on the floor, walls and 10’ flat ceiling to cushion the sound of the ball hitting the screen, as well as the simulator’s mimicking of birds, weather conditions and oth-er sounds of a golf course such as the ball hitting a tree, a cart path or splashing in the water. Amenities such as a double bar with a refrig-erator and a card table turn the man cave into an entertainment area for the homeowner’s bridge games. A mural of a beautiful buck deer in the wild graces one wall. Wood and glass shelving around the perimeter of the room and custom built cabinetry display hunting expedition ant-lers, as well as a collection of photographs, tro-

phies and other memorabilia. The man cave addition’s brick and casement windows were chosen to match the façade of the existing house. One inch foam wall sheath-ing and a zone line unit provide energy efficient heating and cooling.

Karen McKechnie’s extensive remodeling of this house gave it renewed charm and style. By redesigning the kitchen, she enlarged the living room and dining area. The kitchen is enriched by staggered height black glazed cherry cabine-try with crown molding and a black beadboard island with a step up bar. A slate backsplash and granite countertops complete the freshly elegant look. Bumping out an existing garage wall allowed for the expansion of the laundry room. The homeowner put the former kitchen cabinets to good use by distressing them in a black finish and installing them in the new laundry room.Vinyl, carpet and tile on the first floor were re-

placed with hardwood to unify and update the open space. New crown molding and millwork over doors and windows provide subtle but very tasteful appointments. A new traditional fire-place with a marble hearth and detailed mantel now grace the living room. McKechnie’s ingenious space planning trans-formed the former attic into a sleek new bath-room and double decker his and her closets. The bathroom features a vaulted ceiling, cherry cabinetry with a black glaze, a glass enclosed tiled shower, 18” tile floor, and double sinks. A new linen closet was built on top of the gabled ceiling of the first floor. The new master bedroom was created from

an existing bedroom. Closets were removed to enlarge the space. The ceiling was raised to make a tray ceiling and crown molding was added as a final decorative touch.
