6 The Tour of Remodeled Homes

Welcome to

About the Registered Remodelor’s Council

This year we celebrate the 26th Anniver-sary of the Tour of Remodeled Homes in Louisville. Each year the showcase has grown in popularity. The diversity in proj-ects and the neighborhoods in which the homes reside this year, help to showcase the talents of our Registered Remodelors and the potential for existing homes across Louisville. The remodeling industry in Louisville has continued to thrive, evident by the number of homes on display this weekend, at 18 projects.

When you choose to remodel your home you want to ensure that you’re hiring a professional. In 1976 the Home Builders Association of Louisville (HBAL) found-ed the Remodelor’s Council in order to strengthen the awareness of professional remodelers and to raise the image of the profession as a whole.

As Registered Remodelors must meet stringent requirements that set them apart from the average remodeler, clients can take heart in knowing that when they hire a Registered Remodelor they are working with a professional who is striving to be better than the rest. It is important for you to make sure that the person you entrust the safety, image, and security of your home is someone you can trust.

For more information about the Remod-elor’s Council or for a list of Registered Re-modelors highlighting their areas of exper-tise, call 502.429.6000 or visit our web site at www.hbal.com.

Hobbs

The objective of this remodel project was to com-pletely update and modernize the 1914 English Tudor house while keeping true to the period of the home. Insuramax Contractors performed all the major construction and additions, while the homeowner remodeled the interior of the home. The major exterior construction included the addition of an extra large three car garage which is in scale with the main house. A fourth garage door was installed on the opposite side to open the garage into the home’s courtyard. A mud room, with a storage closet and wall of windows, was added on the back of the house. A very large screened porch that includes an outdoor kitchen and full size stone fireplace was built off the spec-tacular kitchen. The screened porch and mud room were built in a rounded conservatory style to match other features of the home. An old ga-rage was removed off the back of the property and a striking two-story carriage house was built. The

carriage house is an additional two car garage with guest quarters above. Architect Dan Grimm, Insur-amax Contractors, and the homeowners carefully selected modern products such as fiber cement and cultured stone to give the appearance that the ad-dition and carriage house are original to the home. The interior of the home was renovated by the homeowner, Tom Drexler, owner of Tom Drexler Plumbing and Bathroom Renovators, a kitchen and bath remodeling company. Improvements include all new plumbing, electrical, and geother-mal HVAC systems. On the first floor, walls were removed and rebuilt to create a large period style kitchen. The kitchen has a 9’ island with a Car-rera marble top, Mexican floor tile, and a custom range hood. A powder room and home office were also added. On the second floor, bathrooms were added to both children’s bedrooms. For the mas-ter suite, a fourth bedroom was turned into a large custom closet and master bath. The master bath

has travertine tile, steam shower and heated floor. The master suite also has a coffee bar and built-in dressers. The original master bath was converted into a second floor laundry room. The third floor was finished with a “mom’s” room, Wii/gaming room, and large kids’ room with disco ball and dance floor. Landscaping, a patio, ironwork, period style gut-ters, and downspouts contribute to this spectacular remodel project.

Green initiatives were integral to this remodel that incorporated a new high efficiency furnace, Energy Star windows, closed cell insulation in roof lines, and open cell insulation in the walls. Insulated concrete forms (ICF) were used for the foundation, and spray foam insulation was chosen for the back of the house and for the new addition. Architect Ted Bressoud and Kiel Thomson worked together on the interior design of the house. Removing the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, and adding a breakfast room were the primary goals of the renovation at the begin-ning of the project. Traditional, custom solid maple cabinets with brushed nickel hardware and marble countertops for the perimeter cabinets as well as the island combine with oak floors to establish the character of the kitchen. Alcott and Bentley was instrumental in lighting the layout of the room, including the peninsula that divides the kitchen from the dining room. Stainless steel ap-

pliances and a small bar with a microwave and a wine refrigerator further endow the kitchen with design-forward appeal. Increased storage was cru-cial to the kitchen remodel and led to the inclu-sion of a corner cupboard, built-in closet pantry, and pull-out drawer under the breakfast area built-in bench. The bench matches the painted maple custom built-in table. Because the family generally enters the house from the back yard/garage area, a mud room was built to encourage coats and shoes to be taken off there instead of cluttering the house. It has solid wood cabinetry, a shelf for hooks and coats, a mop sink with a sprayer and a pullout bin for dog food. Thomson enclosed a dated and unattractive screened porch to create a sunroom. The floor was leveled, columns were reworked, heating and air conditioning were introduced, and heated tiles, a beadboard ceiling and fan light were added. An old pavered patio was transformed with Penn-

sylvania Bluestone. A breezeway was built to con-nect the mudroom to the garage, and outside stairs to the basement were constructed. Existing footers and concrete pads of a deteriorating garage were recycled, but the roof structure was reframed and two new doors were used to erect a new garage.

While this 2-story Tudor house was on the market to be sold by the previous owner who had lived there for almost 50 years, a large tree branch fell through the roof and into the kitchen. The acci-dent was the catalyst for evaluating the general condition of the home, and eventually, to perform-ing an extensive whole house remodel, including a two story addition. Jim Phillips Restoration & Re-modeling worked with WJL Design Associates on the architecture of the two story addition. Full dimensional 30 year shingles, all new elec-trical underground service, plumbing, insulation, heating and air, and ducting were installed. The existing quarter sawn oak hardwood floors were repaired and refinished, and matching hardwood was installed in the new areas. A bedroom, second floor laundry room and four new full baths were added. Design details such as wainscoting and

chair rails abound, instilling the home with rich character. “Cozy luxury” defines the amateur chef’s kitch-en which was designed to respect the overall style of the home, and features Gaggenau and Ther-mador appliances set into dark stained wall cabi-nets and an island. The cabinetry is accented by a honed granite countertop and tumbled marble backsplash. Special amenities include a built-in steamer in the island, down draft hood, wine cool-er, and prep sink. Completing the kitchen design are a pantry adjacent to the kitchen, and a separate bar area. An existing space was enlarged to create a sump-tuous master bath with a radiant heated travertine tile floor, air jet tub, double vanities and a walk-in shower. Another bathroom has a tub/shower combination, ceramic tile on the floor and tub

surround, large storage closet, double vanities with under mounted sinks, and a decorative window that dates to the 1800s. A large walk-in shower, ce-ramic tile, and recessed and sconce lighting infuse a children’s bathroom with practicality and style.

The empty nester homeowners of this 1½ story five bedroom/4 ½ bath home had long dreamed of remodeling the house. That dream turned into an extensive but exquisite undertaking as a small ranch became an impressive home that exudes personality. Most of the house was torn down but the foun-dation remained. Sterling Development added onto the foundation and designed a new floor plan for the existing foundation as well as for a master suite on the first floor, and three bedrooms on the second floor addition. Heated hardwood-inspired tile covers the en-tire first floor, other than in the master and guest suites. The hearth room captures the concept of stylish informality with a mantel integrated into a paneled wall, built-in cabinetry, wood burning fireplace, and glass doors that lead to a walled in rear patio. A full wall of cherry cabinetry in the

dining room complements the paneling and built-ins of the hearth room. Connected to the hearth room is the kitchen where custom cabinetry with granite countertops takes center stage. A gas cook-top with custom hood, built-in refrigerator, Miele dishwasher, walk-in pantry with custom shelving, beverage center and island seating combine to of-fer superb functionality. An efficient laundry room consists of generous cabinetry, a pull down ironing board and tilt up work table. Relaxation and tranquility were keys to the de-sign of the master suite. Large doors lead from the master bedroom to a beautiful private courtyard. Natural light streams through several Marvin win-dows into the bath that melds the most modern conveniences with old fashioned details such as robe hooks on high wainscoting. The home own-ers can choose between pampering themselves in

the whirlpool or in a glassed in shower that has both a rainhead and a handheld shower. Stepping onto the heated floor is a delightful way to start a chilly day. Special care was taken to preserve a tree in the patio area where family and friends are invited to enjoy the outdoors in seating and dining areas. The design of the home’s old gate was copied, and the existing hardware was used on a charming gate that provides additional character to the area.

Kitchen design: Southern Kitchens; Appliances: The Trend

The goal of the 600 sq. ft. remodeled area of this traditional St. Matthews ranch house was to open up the kitchen and family living space to give a feeling of openness to a young couple’s first home together, making it ready to accommodate the family as it grows. One of the challenges was to re-cess beams in the ceiling in order to eliminate load bearing walls that divided the space into several smaller existing rooms. A decorative column was added to support the beam and give a transition point while still creating the feel of open space. Bailey Remodeling and Construction removed the existing hardwood in the entire house, added new screws in the subfloor throughout to mini-mize squeaking, and installed 3” prefinished oak hardwood floors. A new partially vaulted ceiling exposed an exist-ing octagonal window in the attic that now brings

in natural light to the living area. The old brick sur-round on the wood burning fireplace was removed and was replaced with granite. The fireplace is now a focal point of the room. Because of their neutrality and versatility, vary-ing shades of beige have been a popular color choice for years. But the inside word from many interior designers is that “gray is the new beige”. A soft gray was selected for the walls of the living area. Color is introduced through furniture and ac-cessories. The family friendly kitchen is now the hub of the house. Hickory cabinets with an espresso stain are accented by Alaskan White granite countertops. A metallic gray granite composite sink gives a dis-tinctive touch to the cabinetry. “I always enjoy bringing new life to an old house. It’s exciting to give our clients the oppor-

tunity to mold their home into a functional space that will work well for their family for many years to come,” says Remodeler Brandon Bailey.

This house’s former lean-to was demolished to the foundation, eliminating the kitchen, half bath and an office area, and enabling the extension of the new structure. Steel beams were placed in the cen-ter of the house to provide a clear span to support the existing structure and the second story of the addition. The kitchen, dining area and great room are now a large, open space, allowing for both visu-al aesthetic and traffic flow. In the raised ceiling kitchen, white antique glazed perimeter cabinets are paired with an island of distressed black cabi-netry in the kitchen. That differing application of surfaces was continued on the countertops, with one being granite and the other butcher block. A walk in pantry supplements the cabinets’ storage. The island seats six or seven and has a prep sink, an ideal extra for the busy cook. A farm sink with an Easy Touch faucet is a nod to design and function-ality. In addition to the island seating, a banquette was built into the bay window.

A home office/study, once the living room, has a wood burning fireplace and wall-to-wall book-shelves. The home’s remodel also added two bed-rooms, reworked one bedroom and added a Jack and Jill bathroom and a master bathroom. The new laundry room is part of the second floor addition. Energy efficiency and green building were key factors in the design and execution of the remodel of the home, originally named Ryder House in 1937. Much of the home’s existing hardwood was reused for flooring, the kitchen island counter-tops was made from reclaimed butcher block, and natural stone was used when possible. Renovation included the installation of a high efficiency water heater and furnace, foam insulation, new plumb-ing lines, and Low E Argon windows. On the exterior of the house, Wissing matched new red brick to that elsewhere on the house, and used fiber cement siding to accent the double bay window. A balcony separates the master suite from the garage and main living quarters.

An exposed aggregate patio has seating that invites leisurely lounging and relaxing amid a beautiful outdoor setting.

The homeowners had hoped to revitalize their kitchen with the installation of new cabinets. How-ever, simply changing the cabinets didn’t fully give the kitchen the new facelift that was desired. It be-came obvious that the kitchen was too cramped, so plans were put in place to expand the space. With that underway, Wooldridge Brothers was asked to include the bedroom in the home remodel. A major challenge of the remodel was to support the upstairs floor with steel beams allowing clear space below. A 16’ x 16’ space was added onto the former kitchen, allowing for a breakfast area to become part of the much more spacious new kitchen. Three quarter inch white oak floors beautifully set off chic cherry cabinets and an island with Cambria countertops. Kitchen amenities include a vegetable sink in the island and a pantry in the cabinets. Re-cessed canned lighting around the cabinets with pendant lights over the island provide the lighting

that is so essential to successful kitchen design. The wall between the dining room and kitchen was removed and replaced with decorative col-umns. The white oak floor continues from the kitchen into the dining room that is lighted by a chandelier in the center of the room. The large new master bedroom, with new hard-wood flooring, was designed from a former bed-room and part of a loft area. The remaining por-tion of the loft area was reconfigured as a walk-in closet. A utility room for a Maytag dual fuel high efficiency HVAC unit was constructed in some of the space of the former closet area. The new master bath has a cultured marble whirlpool and corner shower, and is further styled with ceramic tile, cher-ry cabinetry with a cultured marble top, a mirror, and sconce lighting. A linen closet provides extra storage. R-40 insulation was placed in the ceiling, while

R-3 was installed in the interior walls and R-19 in the exterior walls. For the addition, brick was found to match the existing house. A portion of the house was covered with aluminum cornice and siding as part of the renovation.

Promaster Design Build’s clients wanted the mas-ter suite of this two story Indian Hills home to be on the first floor rather than the second. Before the renovations could begin, the solid rock hillside had to be removed and a stone retaining wall in-stalled. Presenting another challenge was the need to work around an existing koi pond. The master suite is distinguished by a tray ceil-ing with crown molding and rope lighting, and a custom built-in bookcase. A Sonotube skylight infuses the master bath with natural light. Painted and glazed cabinetry with granite topped double vanities, and a large doorless shower accented with tile give the room just the right touch of panache.

The large master closet has a granite countertop on a cabinet island, and a laundry area, demon-strating that practicality and style can attractively coexist. Updating a second floor bath involved relocat-ing the tub, shower and vanity. A new stall shower and soaking tub, stained cabinetry and porcelain tile jazz up the room. A portion of the patio was removed and the remainder was modified. A screened porch and walkways were added. Décor details such as cus-tom screen panels with a Chippendale rail, large columns, a ceiling fan, and sconces make the porch a design showpiece of the house.

David Elder, Jr.Redlee Construction & Development, Inc.800 Stone Creek Parkway, Suite 5ALouisville, KY 40223502-412-3777www.redleeconstruction.com

When the homeowners purchased this 4,000+ sq. ft. 1970s house, they enlisted Redlee Construction to improve the space planning and to modernize the finishes and details of the house. The interior remodel of the home included the removal and replacement of interior walls, doors, cabinets and floor coverings to create a new kitchen, family room, den, master bath, mud room and laundry room. New casing and baseboard, current paint colors and wallcoverings, and new flooring were integrated into the design of the main level. The elimination of the dining room enabled an open floor plan design to allow the family room, den and kitchen to flow from one to an-other. New 3” wide red oak floors match those on the lower level. A stunning kitchen is a splendid example of function meeting form. Cream color maple wall cabinets are accentuated by a marble countertop and full height marble backsplash with etched

glass sliding doors; a dark brown maple island is topped with the same marble surface. GE Mono-gram appliances, including a paneled maple re-frigerator, gas cooktop with a custom 72” wide wall-to-wall stainless steel hood, built-in oven, and beverage center give even a novice cook confidence and are sure to inspire the more proficient culinary aficionado. The den and family room’s television equipment is located in the kitchen pantry and is controlled with a remote eye to conceal all elec-tronic components. An inviting family room leads to a glass walled sunroom where a vaulted ceiling and hardwood floors add a dash of drama. After tearing out a wall in the den, the stairwell was opened up and is adorned with a contemporary custom made hand-rail with unique rectangular spindles. The dining room, kitchen, and all headers in the family room, kitchen and den were demolished. This combined space was converted to an open

kitchen/family room for entertaining. Fresh and current paint colors and new floor coverings were elements of the new design. One full bath was converted to a powder room. The remaining space from the full bath was added to the master bath to accommodate the inclusion of a shower and tub. The new master bath is the es-sence of tasteful design, with marble topped maple cabinetry, marble flooring and a marble and glass shower.

The homeowners and Bruenderman agreed that this three bedroom 1960s ranch home was long over-due for an updated identity. The house was nicely designed to receive an addition onto the back. A hallway was extended through the original master bedroom, providing access to the new mas-ter bedroom that is highlighted by a tray ceiling with crown molding. Separate his and her walk-in closets with custom interiors are located off the bedroom. Two 5’4” doors open from the lushly carpeted bedroom onto a new covered porch that leads to the back yard. The large master bath has an under mount soaking tub with granite deck, and a glass enclosed ceramic tile shower. A tan brown granite countertop embellishes the custom double maple vanity that has an espresso finish, and a leaded glass window adds an unusual artistic touch to the room that is finished with beadboard wainscoting. The ceramic tile floor is heated.

Oak flooring was added to the living room, din-ing room, family room and hallways. The addition to the home included a window in the former master bath. A small window was add-ed to the space which became a child’s bathroom. The original master bedroom was transformed into a third child’s room to which a custom finish interior closet was installed. An existing hall bathroom was gutted and fitted with new cabinets, fixtures, and a ceramic tile tub surround. Since the hallway to the master bedroom was an interior hallway with no sunlight, two Velux Sun Tubes were selected to brighten the space with sunlight. The kitchen was completely renovated, begin-ning with the bumping out of the rear wall and expanding the room three feet for an eating area with a box bay window. Off white glazed maple

cabinets, a granite countertop, stainless steel appli-ances, pantry closet and a ceramic floor make the room one of the family’s favorites. Decorative touches such as a chair rail with bed-mold panels below it, as well as crown molding, give the dining room a bit of stylish new flair. Insulation was upgraded and high efficiency windows were chosen to maximize energy savings. The roof of the main portion of the home was re-placed as the new roof was being installed. A con-crete paver patio with a firepit helps make outdoor entertaining easy and fun.

The homeowners purchased this eclectic Arts and Crafts style home with the intention of renovat-ing it to suit their family’s needs. Working with architect Tim Winters, Promaster Design Build redesigned the floor plan, replaced the roof and relocated stairways. Formerly a modest one-story house with three dormers, it took on an entirely different exterior personality with the addition of two large dormers, a brick and cedar shingle fa-çade, and a gabled roof on the front. Two additions were added to the front and back of the house which created a new foyer and a large master suite. The family room was bumped out to situate a bay window, and most of the interior walls were removed to construct a larger kitchen. The layout of the deck was also reconfigured. Beautiful reclaimed oak floors allow off white glazed perimeter cabinets and a reclaimed oak is-land to star in the state-of-the-art kitchen. A cook-top with a down draft hood, wall oven and Sub

Zero refrigerator help make cooking at home a fun family activity. Reclaimed pine walls individual-ize a walk-in pantry. Sunken off the kitchen and dining room is a breakfast area notable for its two glass walls. An innovative new floor plan in the front of the house is comprised of a foyer, formal dining room, study and living room. The size of the living room was decreased so that a hallway that leads through the house to the family room/kitchen could be built. The back section of the house was opened up to accommodate the family room/and kitchen. All the bathrooms in the house were moved and a new powder room was added. The house has a master suite and another bed-room on the first floor, and two large bedrooms on the second floor. The new master bath features a large glass shower with porcelain tile, an archway over the whirlpool tub, engraved travertine accent tiles in the shower, decorative columns, and a heat-

ed porcelain tile floor. The cabinetry and tub deck are painted and glazed. Foam insulation, a burglar alarm system and an audio video system were installed.

Futurist Faith Popcorn coined the term “cocoon-ing” to signify the increased interest in a family’s quality time at home. This remodeled home is a design nod to that cocooning trend. According to Remodeler Rick Allison, the basement is a type of “man cave”, with plenty of space for the family to enjoy spending time together and an ambience that is conducive to entertaining friends. Bright colors and natural light impart energy, casualness and an unmistakable feeling of fun. Not surprisingly, television viewing is a primary component of the remodeled area. Instead of hav-ing only one television in the space, there are three: one in the main area, one over the bar and one in the video/movie room. An entertainment center

with Surround Sound was built specifically so that children would have a dedicated area to watch and play video games. A wet bar eliminates the need to go upstairs for re-freshments. Coronado stone was used on the front of the bar, visually uniting it with the stone col-umns that provide architectural interest elsewhere in area. The bar has a refrigerator, sink and lami-nate countertop. A half bathroom was added to make the space fully functional. In the bathroom, sconces flank a mirror over the pedestal sink. Ceramic tile was used in the bathroom, as well as around the bar. The re-maining area of basement is carpeted. Low E energy efficient windows replaced the existing windows.

Louisville Handyman’s 3D walkthrough allowed these homeowners to view the layout, sizes and many details before the project was initiated. It started with a custom front porch entrance to enhance the exterior of the home. The goal was to update the old colonial style with more contempo-rary design elements. On the interior, the floor plan for the second floor of the house was redesigned, adding a walk-in closet for the master bedroom and a guest suite with its own bathroom. The stairway to the second level was opened up and wrought iron balusters and a custom oak handrail were added. One of the five bedrooms was converted into a gathering space for family activities. Upgraded base boards and window casing in all of the rooms and the addition of crown molding in the master bedroom and gathering space added to the transformation. Each of the bathrooms was completely remodeled The old Jack and Jill bathroom was converted to a hall bathroom and was completely transformed with upgraded features that include a custom shower with separate handheld and shower head, two recessed shampoo caddies, tile floor, a one of a kind niche featuring tile high-lights, a new vanity with a quartz countertop and under-mount sink, a unique blinds-

between-the-glass privacy window in the shower, heavy glass shower door, and fashionable lighting. The master bath was expanded and designed with improved natural light and lots of custom fea-tures. The contemporary décor continues through the carefully orchestrated use of a custom built wall hung vanity with under-mount sinks and three inch quartz countertop. The shower features a rainhead shower with a separate handheld shower and even a private seating area with its own handheld shower. A zoned sound system and new vent fan/heater combination round out the list of features. The guest bathroom is designed for guests and as a personal retreat for the lady of the house. It in-cludes a new corner soaking tub with three bathing options (faucet, handheld, and rainhead shower), calming twelve by twenty four inch Italian white tiles on the shower walls and floor, custom van-ity and feminine quartz counter with under-mount sink. Adding to the retreat feel is a zoned sound sys-tem with a flat panel television. The kitchen remodel encompassed a total rework of the cabinet design and kitchen space. Custom cabinets and a new island with a prep sink and seat-ing for five were included in the new design. Also,

a new window and window seat were added, an existing fireplace was upgraded with a new mantle and quartz surround. Upgraded lighting with blown glass pendant lights, countertops and new floors complete the transformation. New stainless steel appliances including refrigerator, new range hood, advantium oven, steam oven and dishwasher will serve the homeowners well. We are proud to say that the overall project was completed within budget and within the agreed upon timeframe. Even more important, the house was transformed from a tired and outdated design to one that connects the family through a new gath-ering space and new kitchen.

This project had a unique twist. John Miranda, a partner in Pinnacle Properties, was both the client and remodeler. “It was the ultimate test in keeping the client happy,” says Miranda. The Mirandas em-barked on the project with the desire to transform a ‘90s style kitchen into a design-current space. While the kitchen remodel progressed, a whole house re-model began to emerge as the family wanted to im-prove the overall comfort of the home. An existing stairway that separated the kitchen and great room was removed. Because both walls of the stairway were load bearing, the ceiling of the kitchen and a third of the ceiling in the great room had to be removed. Upstairs ceiling joists were re-engineered and three large beams were added to car-ry the load. A 9’ opening increased to a 21’ opening. The structural challenge was met, greatly enhancing the look and value of the home. A serving bar separates the great room, with 18’ cathedral ceilings, from the kitchen, but allows the

space to remain open and inviting. Its design is per-fect for entertaining both large and small groups. The hardwood that was chosen for the great room was extended throughout the first floor. The Miran-das referred to the formal living room as a museum because it was rarely used. Its reincarnation as an of-fice makes it a much more functional space. Homeowners who lament their own home’s lack of cabinet space will appreciate this new kitchen’s abundance of cabinetry, encompassing wall, island and bar area cabinets. Two different but comple-mentary colors of cabinetry provide visual interest; the wall and bar cabinets are dark brown, and the island cabinetry is olive green. All are accented with brushed antique brass hardware and granite coun-tertops. Two ovens and two sinks are sure indica-tions that this kitchen is not only pretty to look at, but it is meant to be used and enjoyed. Recessed and pendant lights over the island and a hanging light fixture above the kitchen table provide essential task

and ambient lighting. Green building initiatives included adding foam insulation, installing the former kitchen cabinets in a basement bar/kitchen, and selecting energy effi-cient lighting and Energy Star appliances. The remodel also included repainting the entire house, installing new light fixtures on the first floor, and adding a closet upstairs.

Stonehenge Construction’s second home in the Tour was started on May 17. Come see the stun-ning results of an enlarged family room/kitchen of this traditional ranch home. Taking space from the existing garage of 8’6” ft. gives this home a very open floor plan. That same amount of space was then added back onto the two car garage. To fulfill the family’s wishes of having a more spacious kitchen, three walls were removed, en-abling the space to be opened up and to have the former kitchen converted into a breakfast area. New oak floors span the resulting large, family room/kitchen/breakfast area. Prior to the renova-tion, the kitchen had minimal cabinets and the most basic appliances. There are now 20’ft. of cherry cabinets, an 8’ ft. black stained maple is-land that seats five people, an exotic Celestial Blue granite countertop, and all new gleaming stainless steel appliances with a stainless steel hood. Con-figured into the former inadequate-size pantry is a

new wet bar with ice maker. A small window over the kitchen sink limited the view of the patio and lovely treed lot, and was replaced by a 9’ window that almost magically brings the colors and tex-tures of nature into the house. The space in which a table had been placed was converted to a pantry and a laundry room with a stacking washer and dryer, eliminating the need to make a trip to the basement to do the laundry. A wall between the formal dining room and family room was removed; decorative columns now provide support and aesthetic appeal. The one story house’s family room had an 8’ textured ceiling with rough fake sawed cedar beams. Stonehenge’s design savvy led to the ceil-ing’s removal and a tray ceiling with rope lighting. An original patio was in deplorable condition. Old lumber sat on top of concrete surrounded by broken brick pavers. One step up, a dilapidated lumber deck was far from inviting. The new pa-

tio reflects the same careful attention to detail as does the rest of the home. It’s now where the fam-ily and their friends will gather throughout much of the year. Increased energy efficiency measures included insulating the entire house with blow-in insula-tion, adding several LowE Energy Star windows and doors, and designing the kitchen with Energy Star appliances.

This home is a dazzling fusion of enticing surprises, sophisticated charm and definitive elegance. The collaborative effort of Wolford Building & Remodel-ing and architect and artist Sonny Whittle, the home promises to become one of Anchorage’s residential design icons. The duo transformed a 2500 sq. ft. bungalow into a 4500 sq. ft. masterpiece of design, beginning with the removal of walls, ceilings and electrical work. Through meticulous planning and innovative approaches to design and construction, the house was brought up to code while maintaining the his-torical integrity of the home and adhering to guide-lines of the National Register of Historical Places. The front porch required extensive structural work including shoring up footers, adding a steal beam, and securing and leveling the steps. A rich character of period architecture and details coalesces with posh, contemporary amenities with no trace of design disconnect. The home is distinc-tive for its graceful openness that creatively respects the illustrative expression of each room’s purpose and style. The living room’s original fireplace was refur-

bished with a new mantel that parallels mantel designs of the 1920s. Complementary period ap-pointments in the adjacent dining room include extensive wainscoting and crown molding. An arched entry and columns leading to the kitchen mirror the arches and columns on the front of the house. Emeril would feel at home kicking it up a notch in the home’s spectacular kitchen in which drama is delivered by a 16’ tower with an orb light fixture. Exquisitely detailed cabinetry sur-rounds a six burner GE Monogram range, a GE Monogram paneled refrigerator, and a farm sink. The kitchen is a brilliant execution of state-of-the-art amenities seamlessly blending with adherence to historical design. The family room reflects a warm intimacy through the use of design particulars such as a see-through fireplace to the porch, inset walnut paneled bookcases and a matching walnut mantel. Sliding French doors open onto the porch that is unusual for its weeping mortar between stones. The porch’s outdoor kitchen area, designed by Paul Shrader of Cherry Valley Spas and Recreation, has separate seat-ing and dining areas. The color and texture of the

porch floor concrete was specially formulated to re-semble that which would have been used when the house was built. Glittering crystal cabinet knobs and resplendent sconces accessorize the lavish use of marble in the master bathroom where a soft blue and white color palette sets a luxurious stage. Green initiatives and energy efficiency were para-mount to the project, leading to the artistic use of reclaimed wood and the installation of foam insula-tion and a geothermal system.

This year Stonehenge Construction has two homes on the Tour. The refined renovation of this home begins on the exterior where 30 year old gray sid-ing was removed and new cement siding was in-stalled. The siding was then painted dark New Eng-land blue with the new Azek trim painted white around the doors and windows. The red door makes a charming statement about the Cape Cod style house. Two attached outbuildings were added that feature barn style doors that store the riding lawn mower and bicycles. A brick patio that is now four times larger than the original concrete patio looks out onto Mother Nature’s gift of a small lake and tall trees. The spacious patio is a perfect loca-tion for relaxing or entertaining. The outdated dark cabinets, floors and wood-work made the kitchen appear dreary and lack-luster. Installing new cherry cabinets with a solid

surface countertop, random width pegged plank oak floors, crown molding, and adding 6 feet to the existing kitchen space gave a whole new open feel to the kitchen. New stainless steel appliances, including a 4’ refrigerator, wine cooler, icemaker, gas cooktop with a built-in wood hood, wall oven, and a microwave, in addition to a shed ceiling with skylights and recessed lighting now infuse the space with individuality and panache. An island with task lighting was integrated into the design so that the homeowner could roll dough and put to use her skills and express her love for baking. Some of the cabinets that had been in the kitchen were painted and installed in the laundry room where new vinyl flooring and new paint spruced up the room’s appearance. This home is owned by the original owners who built 30 years ago and are amazed how

adding 6 feet onto the home with skylights, a large window and a door opening onto the new patio have changed their kitchen.

Following renovation, this house now reflects a transitional style rather than its original French Pro-vincial design. The new gabled garage and covered front porch, wrought iron railings and two addi-tional gable accents, significantly changed the look of the home. The driveway entrance was relocated for better curb appeal, more visitor parking, and access to the garage. Lighted brick posts at the end of the driveway along with new trees, ground cover, shrubbery and flowers further augment the exterior appeal, giving it a more stately appearance. Looking to the future, the homeowners wanted to incorporate aging-in-place design with one floor level living. Peterson added a first floor heated ga-

rage and laundry room, both of which are level with the main house. The laundry room, which has a through-the-wall heat pump, cabinetry with a built-in bench and hanging space, windows, ceramic tile floor and recessed lighting, may be entered from the garage. Access to the home is through a former bed-room that was given new life as an office. The office was dressed up with crown molding and hardwood flooring. The former lower level garage is now a guest bedroom. Special attention was given to the exterior to hide the fact that this was formerly a ga-rage. A burglar alarm was also added. Increased energy efficiency was achieved by the installation of fiberglass insulation and LowE dou-

ble hung clad windows. An old cistern which is lo-cated in the new garage location had to be addressed as part of the renovation effort. After breaking out the top of the cistern, it was filled with gravel.
