Taylor Moving ofBoulder: Makingcustomers happy

By Judy Finman

“I was extremely happy with the movers! They were wonderful!” wroteanother client, emphatically.

For nearly 15 years, savvy Colorado individuals, businesses and non-profits have entrusted their possessions to Taylor Moving of Boulder, a localcompany that has earned its reputation for trustworthiness, superior service, and pleasing its customers.

Realtor Jeremy DeBell, with RE/MAX Horizons Group in Broomfield, has called on Taylor Moving more than once. “They moved me personally, and I was so pleased with them that I have recommended them to myclients. I was impressed with their customer service, reliability, and theirhard-working, friendly crew,” he says. “My customers are grateful that Irecommended the company. They say the Taylors and their crew arewonderful to work with. I’ve never had a complaint.”

DeBell points out that moving “is a very stressful time for people. Butwith Taylor the move will go smoothly. They’ve really got a desire to makethe customer happy – which has not been my experience with other movingcompanies. Glen Taylor is hands-on. He checked in on my move to say,‘How’s everything going?’ ‘Is there anything we can do better?’ He makes apoint of making the customer happy.”

“They listen and are amenable to what we want,” says Peter Lundskow, curator of collections for the Boulder History Museum. He engaged Taylorto move the museum’s only piano, a Laffargue player piano, built in NewYork in 1921. “We’ve used Taylor before,” Lundskow says. “We like to use a

local company. Both the owners and the movers take a personalizedapproach to every move.”

Taylor Moving is owned by the husband-and-wife team of Glen andLeah Taylor and employs around 23 movers. The company transports asmany as 1,200 households and businesses each year. It specializes in moveswithin Boulder County, but regularly coveys people all over Colorado andoccasionally outside the state.

Leah Taylor says, “A lot of local moving companies have been affectedby the economy, going out of business or being bought up by nationalchains. We’ve managed to stay busy and in business and were even votedBest Mover in Boulder by Camera readers in 2006 and 2007. We are notnationally funded, so we depend on happy customers for continuedbusiness.” Taylor Moving was also voted 2008 Best of Boulder by readers ofBoulder Weekly.

“Our success comes down to the same crews year after year – we have alow turnover rate,” Glen Taylor says. The guys work together as a team andaccommodate the customers. Three or four of the crew have been with ussince day one – nine of them five or six years.”

Ellen Berman is a self-employed Home Director, who manages movesfor clients. She has found Taylor to be accommodating and flexible. “Wedid several small moves, and the helpers were very courteous and concernedabout the personal belongings. They took extreme care in moving a babygrand piano from one household to another. One time we did multiplepickups and dropoffs; they weren’t expecting this when they arrived, butthey accommodated us, and we were pleased. They didn’t waste time; theywere efficient and showed a lot of care.”

Because the family is very hands-on, you almost always reach a Taylorwhen you call the office, and always meet one of them on your in-homeestimate. They have a lot of repeat customers and referrals, becausecustomers know the owners will always be involved in the process and themovers are always first-rate.

Taylor Moving has been in the same location in Boulder, with the sameowners, from the beginning. Some companies say they are locally owned orhave been around for decades, but are actually owned from out of state orhave changed hands several times.

“With Taylor Moving we are what we say – a true family-run, locallyowned and operated moving company that cares about you and yourbelongings,” Glen affirms.

Building a successful business allows the Taylors to give back to thecommunity. They’ve donated moves for local institutions such as TheBoulder Shelter for the Homeless, Boulder Valley Humane Society andHabitat for Humanity. “If we’ve done well, then we should give back,” saysSandy Taylor, Glen’s mother, who works full time in the office. “If it’s a goodcause, we like to help out.”

“We love you guys!” Every business owner longs to hear these words from customers. At TaylorMoving of Boulder, this is one of many accolades from customers surveyed after they moved.

Taylor Moving is located at 4949 N. Broadway, #110, inBoulder. For more information or a free estimate on your nextmove, call Taylor Moving at 303.443.5885 or e-mail the Taylorsat [email protected]. Visit the www.TaylorMove.com.

Page 49: 2008 Flatirons Tour of Homes

These days, many people appreciate and look for environmentallyfriendly furnishings and services when buying, remodeling or

updating their home or place of business. Whether it’s energy-efficient lightbulbs, appliances or heating and cooling units, “go green” is the mantra.

But did you know you can go green when it comes to your flooring, too? Go Green Flooring by The Carpet Line has been ahead of thetrend, offering eco-friendly flooring products for a decade. In fact, theBoulder company has specialized in 100-percent natural wool carpetsince the family owned and operated store opened its doors in 1982.

“Flooring is something some people really don’t think about interms of being eco-friendly,” says Go Green Flooring owner BrendaSteele. “But they have that option.”

At Go Green Flooring, that option includes an array of choices foreco-friendly carpets, rugs and hardwoods. Go Green works withdesigners, builders and individuals in providing residential andcommercial flooring products. The store carries all major brands – GoGreen is the only full-product Karastan dealer in Boulder – andis fully stocked with earth-friendly flooring choices.

In addition to natural wool carpeting, Go Greenoffers recycled synthetic carpets and PET carpet, commonly known as “pop-bottle carpet” because it’smade from recycled, non-toxic plastic in soda-pop,water and juice containers. They also carry Smartstrand,a carpet made from a corn polymer fiber that takes30-percent less energy to producethan its nylon counterparts.

“It’s virtually impossible to stain and it feels like it’s been soaked infabric softener, it’s so soft,” Steele says.

For people sensitive to toxic gasses that carpet can emit, Go Greencarries a variety of low- and no-VOC (volatile organic compounds) pads.

Cork is a popular hard surface flooring material these days because it’sextremely durable, anti-microbial and anti-bacterial. Go Green Flooring,a member of the Boulder Green Building Guild, also offers a selection of“reclaimed hardwoods,” wood that is harvested from old, torn-downbuildings or leftover from early logging days and reclaimed from riversonce used to transport the lumber to it’s destination. They also carryForest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood flooring products.

“FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in anenvironmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economicallyviable way,” Steele says. “Consumers wishing to support healthy forestsand communities should look and ask for the FSC label whenpurchasing hardwood.”

If you’re in the market for stone or tile flooring, Go Green has youcovered, as well. In addition, the company carries Marmoleum,

virtually indestructible, all-natural linoleum.Go Green is a full-service flooring company: They will

Built Green® Colorado has been behind the growth of green andenergy efficient home building in Colorado since 1995. Over that

period of time, green building has become part of the culture of theHome Builders Association of Metro Denver and much of itsmembership, and increasingly woven into the fabric of the homebuilding industry. ENERGY STAR®, a recognized label for many of theappliances and electronic devices in our homes and offices, hasexpanded its influence to buildings, including new homes. So how arethey different? Built Green® Colorado is a comprehensive ratingprogram that looks at the value of “greener,” more environmentallyappropriate options to standard building products and techniques, aswell as energy efficiency, tuned to the climate and building practices ofColorado. ENERGY STAR is a national brand that evaluates thequalities of various building components so that consumers can choosemore efficient products without being experts in the technology; it alsohas a new home program that sets minimum performance criteria fornew homes. Built Green® and ENERGY STAR have been informallylinked for quite some time. The Built Green® Checklist has referencedENERGY STAR throughout its development, recommendingENERGY STAR appliances early in the program and, more recently, introducing the ENERGY STAR Advanced Lighting Package asENERGY STAR becomes more entrenched in the residentialbuilding industry. Both Built Green® and ENERGY STAR aredynamic programs, constantly evolving as new technologiesand research reveal better ways of building.

In its evolution, Built Green® has brought in otherprograms where there were opportunities to “plug in” anappropriate component. For example, the AmericanLung Association Health House standards areincluded in the Built Green® Checklist as a single itemthat gains 13 points. In the 2007-2008 Checklist,ENERGY STAR New Home criteria aresimilarly packaged as one of fouroptions for the minimum energyrequirement to qualify a home as BuiltGreen®. Packaging these externalprograms has a couple of benefits. Itrecognizes the credible work andexpertise put into other programs andminimizes confusion by consumers by demonstrating that theseprograms share the same goal of quality, high performance homes. Italso reduces the time required to develop and maintain some of thetechnical aspects of Built Green®, time that can be focused more onbuilder training and consumer education.

This year Built Green® and ENERGY STAR have formalized theirrelationship by setting the ENERGY STAR New Home criteria as theminimum energy standard for all Built Green® homes. This change willofficially take place in October 2008, but builders are alreadypreparing, and in many cases have already reached this new standard.Through Built Green®, builders have taken advantage of theopportunity to continuously improve their homes’ performance to thepoint where, even if they aren’t currently meeting the specific criteriafor ENERGY STAR, the difference is less onerous than it may havebeen a couple of years ago. It should also be noted that the minimumenergy requirement for Built Green® exceeds the 2006 InternationalEnergy Conservation Code.

So as a new home buyer, what does Built Green® with ENERGYSTAR mean to you? Take a look at this list of features that are likely tobe in your new home:

• Optimum insulation properly installed with no voids (bare spots)

• High-performance windows for energy savings and comfort• Penetrations in the home’s shell properly sealed to prevent

uncontrolled air infiltration• Ducts sealed with mastic (not duct tape)• Gas appliances are “sealed combustion” (air for combustion is

ducted from the outside and doesn’t mix with indoor air)• Low/no VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints and finishes

are used; carpet is minimized and tacked, not glued• Proper moisture control to avoid condensation and leaks (mold

and structural damage)• Energy efficient lighting package• Independent testing of the home’s energy system

The partnership of Built Green® and ENERGY STAR is a naturalmatch. Energy efficiency has always been fundamental to green building, since the environmental impact of the operation of buildings over theirlifetime is significant. According to the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency, a typical home can cause as much as twice the greenhouseemissions of an average automobile, and most of this is in the energyconsumed to keep the home comfortable. But there is more to thepartnership than just joining two recognized programs together. Built

Green® with ENERGY STAR further validates the importance oflooking at the entire home as an interactive system. This “system” is

much more complicated than it used to be, and both programshave continued to bring the latest building science to

homebuilders to not only prevent problems in the future, but to get the best performance possible.

Built Green® Colorado has been helping buildersfind energy solutions to new homes since 1995. Visitors

to homes in the Flatirons Tour of Homes should makea point to visit those homes that are labeled Built

Green®. There they will see many of the featuresrecommended on the Built Green®

Checklist, which lists nearly 200different green building options. As faras the cost of higher performancehomes is concerned, builders recognizethat “affordability” is a long-term issuethat doesn’t end at the closing table.

With the added benefits of ENERGY STAR, these builders are givingtheir customers an even better chance to maintain a comfortable andhealthy home environment without taking a huge bite out of theirmonthly budget.

Green building is smart building. It makes economic andecological sense. The urgency of reducing our dependence on foreignoil has become painfully evident over the last few years, but it wasalways a good idea. And the potential is huge for drastic reductions inour consumption of oil and other resources without sacrificing ourquality of life. As a matter of fact, our quality of life should improve inthe process. So when you leave the Tour of Homes this year and golooking for a new home, start with the list of builders that build to thestandards of Built Green® with ENERGY STAR (www.builtgreen.org).Why would you go any further?

Built Green® Colorado is a voluntary, industry-led programadministered by the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver.ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Department of Energy(www.eere.doe.gov) and Environmental Protection Agency (www.epa.gov).

Safe SystemsBy Thom Collins

Intruders are three times as likely to break into a home without asecurity system than one with a security system. Safe Systems, the

Louisville-based residential and commercial security company, hasbeen keeping families and businesses safe in Boulder County andbeyond for more than 25 years.

The team at Safe Systems is expert at customizing security systemsto meet individual needs. No job is exactly the same except when itcomes to Safe Systems’ goal: Secure the client.

“Every system we do is designed for that homeowner,” says SafeSystems President Larry Halpern. “We’regoing to learn what your lifestyle is, and fityour system to your needs.”

Oftentimes, people aren’t simply lookingfor protection from intruders. Safe Systemscan help in other emergency situations, too.

“We can install systems that detectsmoke that will call for the fire departmentto respond,” Halpern says. “Carbonmonoxide sensors will detect if the CO2levels in your home get too high. We’re going to get asignal and get help to you whether you are in a position where you cancall for help or not.”

Safe Systems has always been a market leader in alarmcommunications. The company boasts a state-of-the-art, 24-hourcentral monitoring station, a key component for a security company.

It’s one of the reasons SDM magazine, a leading publication in thehome-security industry, ranks Safe Systems among the top 100 securitycompanies in the nation.

Technology is changing at a rapid pace. As new technologiesbecome available within your home or place of business, it’s importantto ensure your security system is compatible. Safe Systems offers safe-link radio products, which allow their security systems to function nomatter the type of technology you have elsewhere in your home orbusiness. It’s compatible with either a digital or analog phone system, and it stays on even if your phone system fails.

“Our safe-link technologies allow ourcustomers to monitor their alarm systemswithout phone lines,” Halpern says. “Or if youwant to arm or disarm your alarm systemremotely, you can do that from your cell phone. If you have a child coming home from schooland you’re not going to be home, but you want toknow when they get there, these systems can sendyou a message right to your cell phone or e-mail.“And what’s amazing about the technology is that

it’s really very affordable.”
