2016 may be looked back on as a dark year by many, but for me, it really felt like the start of what I’m trying to achieve in my life.My end goal with this Magazine, is for it to be as big as Rolling Stone Magazine. This may take many many years and a considerable amount of effort, but my recent interviews with some high-profile figures in Music have really reignited my vision. These recent interviews have made the once daunting challenge I set myself feel within reach. I’ve sent almost 1000 emails this year and I’m prepared to send 1000 more next year for this to be what I want it to be.

But my personal success hasn’t come without inspiration over the course of the year. When launching the Magazine, there was never really any inspiration by anyone else to do what I wanted to do - it was just my own drive and determination. Over the course of the year, there have been two main people who have inspired me to push everything I do a little bit further and help me to remember that there really are no limits. The first being Gary Vaynerchuk, a highly regarded businessman and investor who has his daily life as the CEO of many multi-million dollar companies documented and filmed for online entertainment. Gary’s the market doesn’t care about your excuses’ attitude has really spurred me on to keep hustling with the magazine, along with his advice on how to use social media to its fullest to maximise attention and build brands. One of the greatest things about Gary is how down-to-earth and laid back he is - regularly cursing to the camera. This kind of personality has made him relatable and infections to the hundreds of thousands of people who view his content every day.

INSPIRATIONRYAN TEDDERLead Singer of OneRepublic

INSPIRATIONGARY VAYNERCHUK

Businessman & 3 Times New York Times Bestseller

The second inspiration throughout my year has been Ryan Tedder. Ryan is the lead singer of OneRepublic and has written songs for some of the famous singers in popular culture including Adele, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande. He is often called the ‘Secret King of Pop’ having heavily influenced the shape of current music for over a decade. Whilst it may seem that what Ryan and I do are complete polar opposites, I have been able to draw parallels from his songs on OneRepublic’s new album, along with his views on working hard in recent interviews he’s done and this has inspired and empowered me when making the magazine. I often stick some OneRepublic on in the background whilst working.

I don’t see an end to the Magazine. I know where I want it to be and I’m incredibly keen to get as many people involved as possible; whether that’s writing an article or sending in photography, or something completely different and awesome.

Enjoy reading this Edition, I’d say it’s one of the best yet.

There’s more to come from the legendary hitmaker

imbaland has been conquering the world of hip-hop and R&B for well-over a decade. With his production style being widely acclaimed, he has worked with many of today's biggest artists including Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake and has produced unforgettable chart-topping hits. After launching his Label - Mosley Music Group in 2006, he signed incredible talents such as OneRepublic, Nelly Furtado and Keri Hilson, who are now all continuing to this day to be huge successes. Most recently, in February 2016, he regrouped with Missy Elliott to produce the track ‘Someone Else Will’.From my recent interview with the man himself, it is clear to see that he is far from done yet, with more projects to come over 2017 and 2018.

What Artists are you keen to collaborate with in the near future? You'll see, one new artist is on 9 songs on my new LP.

In the Studio, have you been trying out any new technology to make sounds? I switched to Ableton. (Ableton Live is a software music sequencer and digital audio workstation for OS X and Windows.)

You’ve created countless hits, what song stands out for you as the best of Timbaland so far? Why? I love them all, seriously. Each one represents a part of my life and what I was going through at that time.

Are we yet to see your best work? When can we expect to see some new material? I have several projects dropping in 2017 / 2018, so get ready!

Between your first and second album, there was the change in direction from a ska influence to more of a pop sound. What inspired that change? Did you ever consider going back to the band's roots with later material? We've always been a band in evolution because we all have different influences and it's constantly in a blender. We were straight up Punk Rock before Ska sounds entered the picture. Walkin On The Sun went to #1 so that put us on a much higher importance level at our record label and raised the bar big time. We also supported U2 on a tour early-on and we quickly learned we needed bigger songs with more elements to stand up with those type of cats and those size arenas.https://youtu.be/ZIAidYt6WAE?list=PLD6B7DB982049A1E9

It should be easier, we just need to embrace it better.-The band on the appearance of YouTube & iTunes during their success.

With Chart-topping hits and Movie Soundtracks, where next for the legendary Smash Mouth?

You've created countless hits, which song do you still enjoy performing more than the rest? Probably our Van Halen covers, that's fun because the crowd never expects it and it always works. That's one band we all agree on and all were fans of.

How has making albums changed for you guys over the course of your existence, with things like iTunes and YouTube suddenly appearing, is it more difficult than 18 years ago? It should be easier, we just need to embrace it better. We can just release songs and videos all the time without restraints like this one. No labels, no Pub companies, no Lawyers just creation and release.https://youtu.be/jCqoH_J2fdc

What is yet to come for Smash MouthOur 20 year Anniversary is next year so we are releasing a surprise album to celebrate our first album Fush Yu Mang. Can't say much about it yet but it's super cool. We're working on it right now.We will also keep performing live including a killer tour next Summer. We performed on "The Today Show" on Halloween in front of 45 Million TV viewers and there's currently a Geico commercial mentioning us and that's rad and a nice springboard into 2017. We def want to do this forever!

The name of your Album ‘Medicine for Birds’ is both unusual and intriguing. Is it a metaphor for something? The album begins with a song called Little Bird which is a sort of coming of age song. On the other hand, Magnolia is Medicine is a song I wrote when I first moved to The Eastern Shore of Virginia. It’s specifically about how The Eastern Shore was a sanctuary for me – my first years we largely dedicated to healing and reconciliation. I combined the track titles for the album name. It was my hope that the songs would serve as medicine for other ‘birds’ going through similar difficult transitions.

What is your favourite track on the album? Which one would you improve? Personally, I was really excited making Little Bird. Tracking that song was an odd and hilarious experience. I walked into the booth not totally knowing what I was going to do or what would happen. It’s tricky asking what I would change. I don’t think songs have permanent final forms. Any time you play something live you re-invent it. One song we like to experiment with often is Devil Can Get in. We’ve got a few arrangements of that song.

Are there any tracks that didn’t make the album? There are a few: Red Cardinal, Mist At Midnight, & Microphone. It’s hard cutting songs but I ultimately decided that the other twelve songs told the story and complimented each other just a little bit better.

What inspired your folk undertones? My step-dad introduced me to some of my very favorite lyricists. It happened to be that many of the writers he showed me were country or folk/ Americana songwriters like Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson. Neil Young etc.. I suppose years of listening rubbed off on me.

What is coming up next for you? Hopefully a lot of touring. Can’t wait to visit more states and cities in the coming year. I’m excited to see how travel will inspire new music.

His Spotify has over a million monthly listeners. His YouTube account has over 13 million views. His songs have featured in such acclaimed dramas as “Grey’s Anatomy”, “90210”, “The Vampire Diaries”, “Pretty Little Liars” and much more. It’s safe to say that American singer/songwriter Andrew Belle, has made it in the breakneck world that is the music industry. But just how did Andrew prevail where so many before him have failed? I spoke with him over Skype to find out.

Andrew has humble roots as an artist. When asked by his teacher to write a poem for school, it was in the meticulous attention to detail he found himself giving the assignment, that he realised he wanted to write music. In many ways, he had to morph himself into the artist he his is today. With little to no musical training bar a percussion course and an elective he took in college, I found out Andrew not only had to learn to play/write music on his own, but also find his voice.

It wasn’t until college, that Andrew started to search for his singing voice, one with a similar weight to Chris Martin and a similar mood to that of Snow Patrol. Only when Andrew experimented singing in a lower tone, spent time drawing inspiration from other artists, and broke away from his former position of bass guitarist in his college band, and practice like crazy, did he arrive at the finished product we see today.

“My experience was: I got into the music industry, not really because I was a performer, but because I really enjoyed the writing process and I wanted to write songs but no one ever taught me how to do that. A lot of people I talk to are kind of in the same camp, they really like creating music and they want to do it for a living but they don’t really know where to start, they don’t really know how to develop their talent so I usually tell people to do what I did. Find anywhere that will allow you to perform and do that for a couple of years. I did that two to five times a week in different bars and

Page 13: Legendary Hit Maker There is more to come from theadamcrookes.com/jan2017.pdf · There’s more to come from the legendary hitmaker imbaland has been conquering the world of hip-hop

coffee shops just playing, over and over, mainly doing covers because I hadn’t written a whole lot yet. Playing other people’s music that I really liked helped me find my own sound. No one ever taught me how to sing so I really learned how to sing by playing the likes of Coldplay and John Mayer.”

His second tip; find your range. It was only in this experimental period that he found that he was better suited to a mid-range, bass register which he embraced by often covering Coldplay in his early days. Andrew has also turned down proposals to feature on The US Voice. “I looked at what I do and I realised my talent falls in writing and the vocals I give in recordings.” He says talent shows such as The Voice are better-suited to musicians with a wide vocal range.

Of course, I also had to ask him about the infamous Season Six Finale of Grey’s Anatomy where his song “In My Veins” ft. Erin McCarley played out during the pandemonium of the hospital shooting. Surprisingly, Andrew is not a big fan of the show. It did, however, provide him with the perfect medium for impressing a girl he was dating in college who was a big fan of the show. He still found the episode as shocking as the rest of us as he said; “I was not prepared for the level of intensity of that episode.” Amen to that Andrew.

Andrew also has a new Christmas single out this year entitled “Back for Christmas”, which he wrote in half a day. A must-listen during the festive season. His personal favourite is “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, which he covers masterfully. I’d HIGHLY recommend checking both out during the festive period, they’re truly beautiful pieces.

Andrew Belle is living testament that you don’t have to be born with an incredible singing voice to make it in music. All you need is passion, patience, and a willingness to adapt. Oh, and plenty of shitty bars and restaurants to develop your sound in.

There’s more of Andrew Belle to come as he hopes to release his third studio album in the first half of 2017. If you haven’t already, go check out his YouTube and Spotify. You won’t regret it.

DESSERTNitrogen Ice Cream, even though I do have pretty sensitive teeth, it does sound pretty cool.

MAINSouthern Fried Rattlesnake as anything Southern Fried is usually nice!

DRINKSI’d wash it all down with a few rounds of Scorpion Vodka as it sounds pretty fucking hard!
