3rd Sunday of Lent: The Raising of Lazarus

This Lent we are invited to travel with those we encounter week after week in the

Scriptures – Jesus himself, the apostles, a Samaritan woman at a well, a blind man, and

Lazarus. They are companions on our journey. Today our companion is Lazarus. He

was once thought to be dead, but Jesus had another plan. Jesus raised Lazarus from the

dead. All of us in baptism have been justified with the Lord, and through Jesus, salvation

is possible. We were once spiritually dead because of our sin, but now we have a way

out of this death and this way out comes through Jesus' grace. So today, where do we

need Jesus to come into our heart and help us with what causes us death, our own

sinfulness? Where in our sinful hearts does Jesus need to restore us back to life, just like

our companion Lazarus.

Fr. John Hetland

Let no one

walk alone.

The journey

makes us one! From Jerusalem, My Destiny

The Pastor’s Mutterings

Jesus wept. It is the shortest verse in the whole Bible, but one of the

most profound. Jesus wept because he mourned the death of his friend

Lazarus. When someone we love dies, how can we not shed tears?

We need to pay attention to our tears, because they come from the

deepest places in our soul. They cry out what matters most to us. To mourn

is not a sign of weakness, but rather a part of our humanity. Our tears are

precious to God, and Jesus’ tears give us example in our own experience of

sadness and loss.

But perhaps there is more to Jesus’ grieving. One week after the death of Lazarus, Jesus himself would be

placed in a new tomb, his body wrapped with linen cloths and sealed in a cave by a stone. Jesus knew that he

must soon die, and so he wept.

Perhaps, too, Jesus wept because the Pharisees scorned him, the crowd doubted him, his friends Martha

and Mary were angry with him for not being there, and his own disciples didn’t understand him. Jesus was

alone on a sea of disbelief, and his heart was hurting.

This Gospel story is a challenge to our trust in God’s presence in our time of pain. It is a story about death

and resurrection, about the things we need to let go and rise above in our own lives. It is a story about Jesus

calling us out of our own personal tombs. It is an invitation to get up again after we have been brought low,

and live in the light of Easter joy.

YOU ARE INVITED!

Please join our Parish Community to celebrate the

EASTER TRIDUUM, April 17th- 20th. We will gather

to reflect on the central reality of our faith: Christ’s

death and resurrection. Mark your calendars and ensure

that these days are different from all the other days of the year! Please consult the Lenten schedule for times

of services.

“LORD, ARE YOU GOING TO WASH MY

FEET? (John 13:7)

Do you remember this question asked by Peter in

John’s gospel? Do you remember Jesus’ reply? “Unless

I wash you, you will have no inheritance with

me” (John 13:8). Jesus then goes on to explain that if he

has washed our feet we must wash each other’s feet.

We invite you to accept this challenge at our Holy

Thursday Liturgy. Foot washing stations will be set up

in the front and back of church for all to partake in this

most sacred, humble and touching ritual. You will be

invited to approach a station, have one of your feet

washed and in turn wash the foot of another. Please

remember to wear shoes and socks that may be easily

removed as we participate in this humble service.

ST. BARNABAS PARISH FAMILY TIMELINE

As a part of our 90th Anniversary, we created a timeline banner, spanning 1924 to 2014, and invite parishioners to

names on and place on the timeline!

Please be sure to visit the banner in the back of Church and include your family’s name in our parish history. As

families mark the year they joined the parish, the banner will grow to show our parish family history.

Holy Thursday Church Pilgrimage “Remain here and keep watch with me”

Mt 26:38 Holy Thursday, after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, many churches remain open for the exposition of the Blessed

Sacrament so that worshippers can pray until midnight, reenacting the actions of the apostles in the Garden of

Gethsemane, whom Jesus told, “Remain here and keep watch with me.”

Keeping with our parish Companions on the Journey theme for Lent, we invite families to join us on Holy Thursday

to journey, to keep watch together. We are offering a bus pilgrimage to five churches on Holy Thursday. It is a

great (way to keep watch, to keep the night sacred, and to share with your children and families the traditions of

our Catholic faith. We will travel throughout the city to older churches to experience the diverse traditions and ways

that individual parishes celebrate this sacred night. It is a great way for adults, children, and teens to see the old

Catholic churches in the Archdiocese too.

When: April 17th @ 7pm with Holy Thursday Mass; board the bus after Mass

Return: Approx 11:45pm

Transportation: School Bus, $5.00 per person donation requested.
