Hispanic Americans Won’t Be Si-lenced By Anti-Hispanic ActionsNo Nos Quedamos Callados PorLeyes en Contra de los Hispanos

Recently, Hispanic Americans are increasingly being targeted bylegislative and administrative actions that have the effect of mak-ing it uncomfortable being brown in America. Racial profiling placespersons of color in greater jeopardy of being discriminated againstbecause they are perceived by others influenced by stereotypesabout their citizenship, social behaviors, lifestyles, and back-grounds.

Heightened anti-immigrant actions by states such as Arizona andMichigan have gained national attention. The denial of driver’s li-censes for undocumented residents, the denial of marriage licensesin Kent and Ottawa Counties, and recent proposals for Michigan toenact Arizona’s controversial law that requires Police to arrest per-sons who are suspected to be in the country without proper au-thorization, and a rise in ICE raids on employers has most of us onedge about perceptions.

The results of these actionshave made race relationstense in everyday encoun-ters.

News media organizations, the internet and daily con-versations are focused onthe topic of immigration re-lating the issue to the causefor high unemployment, ve-hicle accident and crimerates. Recent cuts to edu-cation budgets have putmore pressure on schoolsto force out children whohave difficulty with the Eng-lish language. Bilingual ed-ucation is being denied to thousands of children in the GrandRapids Public Schools. Similarly, other Michigan schools are alsoguilty of denying children appropriate instruction based on their lan-guage needs. Hispanic children are wrongfully looked at as being“undocumented and not deserving of public education” due to theirlegal status or lack of social security numbers.

The issue of reporting persons suspected of being undocumentedaliens has become a way for competing businesses to underminethe success of their competitors by calling in tips about the legal sta-tus of employees to cause ICE immigration raids on local busi-nesses. Disgusting behaviors are indicative of people affected byan economy in crisis. Deportation raids are on the rise and manywill support these actions suggesting it is the law.

Unfortunately, stereotypes lead to racial profiling and discrimina-tion against masses of people who fit a profile. People of the ma-jority cultural group should be cautioned that the HispanicCommunity will not sit idly by and allow discrimination to prevailwithout a challenge. We too, are a community that has historicallytaken institutions to court for denying our community the freedomsand guarantees afforded to us in the Constitution.

Recent cases filed against Arizona by the ACLU, American CivilLiberties Union and MALDEF, the Mexican American Legal De-fense and Education Fund should serve as notice that we havelegal basis for our concerns. Likewise, the denial of marriage li-censes in Kent and Ottawa Counties have been challenged by localattorneys and M.A.L.D.E.F. Lastly, let’s look forward to the casesin education which will likely be filed in the future over the basicfederal laws protecting the civil rights of children learning English inour public schools.

As a Hispanic Community committed to promoting integration, equality and respect for all Americans, we should continue to showcourage in confronting the evils of racism and discrimination, nomatter who promotes it, and how it manifests itself in our society.Continue to be civil in our discussions with pro-racists as they canget heated in the workplaces of Michigan. We must remember thatpeople who are racist must be challenged at the core of their be-lief system in order to change their behaviors. There is hope! Inthe words of the late Cesar E. Chavez, “God help us to be menand women of purpose!”

¡No debemos quedarnos silencios!

President Barack Obama on Tuesday ordered 1,200 Na-tional Guard troops to boost security along the U.S.-Mexicoborder, pre-empting Republican plans to try to force voteson such a deployment.

More than 20,000 Border Patrol agents are deployed now, mostly along the nation's southern border. There are 344U.S. National Guard troops also working along the border.

"Adding 1,200 National Guard troops is a start, but it isgoing to take much more to secure the border," said Rep.Harry Mitchell.

Support Arizona and SB 1070 Rally Event on June 12, 2010!Take Action Here To Support Arizona and SB 1070 Crackdown on Illegal Immigration

Join Our Efforts to Support Arizona, SB 1070, and immigration enforcement!

Please sign up to support Arizona, SB 1070, and secure borders.

We are sad to announce that ALIPAC is withdrawing support for any rallies in Arizona in June tosupport SB 1070 due to the discovery of racist group involvement and the actions of formerCongressman Tom Tancredo.

We take our commitment to working with and unifying Americans of every race and walk of lifebehind the effort to secure our borders very seriously. While the illegal alien supporters con-stantly make false accusations of racism and racist involvement, it is of paramount importancethat groups like ours work to keep any racist element out of our events and operations.

A few weeks ago, we got behind a rally in Phoenix on June 5 being planned by Dan Smeriglio ofVoice of The People USA and retired Congressman Tom Tancredo. On Monday, May 10th, wediscovered two painful truths that forced us to take a new direction...

MALDEF FILES CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST OTTAWACOUNTY FOR REFUSING MICHIGAN LATINO COUPLE

THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT TO MARRY

MALDEF and Avanti Law Group attorneys challenge Ottawa County’s violation ofthe 14TH Amendment and Michigan’s Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act

GRAND RAPIDS, MI– MALDEF Midwest Regional Counsel Ricardo Meza announced the filing of afederal class action lawsuit against Ottawa County and Ottawa County Clerk Daniel C. Krueger for re-fusing to permit a Latino couple their fundamental right to marry. The Ottawa County Clerk’s officeunder the supervision of County Clerk Krueger has a policy of denying marriage licenses to individualswho do not possess a social security number. MALDEF filed the suit on behalf of Juana and Juan Doeand other similarly situated individuals in the United States District Court for the Western District ofMichigan, Southern Division.

MALDEF Regional Counsel Ricardo Meza stated, “All persons, regardless of immigration status, havethe constitutional right to marry.”

In the complaint, plaintiffs allege that the policies and actions of defendants Krueger and OttawaCounty violate the plaintiffs’ and all other similarly situated individuals’ constitutionally protected rightsto due process and equal protection under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitu-tion. The complaint further alleges that Defendants’ policies and actions violate the Supremacy Clauseof the U.S. Constitution by impermissibly regulating the federal government’s power over immigrationand foreign affairs. In addition, plaintiffs allege the defendants’ policy and practice unlawfully discrimi-nates against plaintiffs and all other similarly situated individuals based upon their race and national ori-gin in violation of Michigan’s Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act, M.C.L.A. § 37.2101.

MALDEF Staff Attorney Alejandro Aixala noted that Defendant “County Clerk Krueger’s refusal to issuea marriage license because a person does not have a valid social security number is inconsistent witha March 19, 2008 Michigan Attorney General Opinion issued by Mike Cox.”

According to the 2008 opinion, “a county clerk may issue a marriage license to an applicant who fails toprovide his or her social security number on the application if the person has never been issued a so-cial security number.”

The Plaintiffs in this matter are also represented by Robert Anthony Alvarez and James L. Betzold ofthe Avanti Law Group. Mr. Alvarez recently filed a similar lawsuit on behalf of Latinos in Kent County,Michigan against County Clerk Mary Hollinrake.

New face of immigration? Miami com-pany creates 'Gringo' masks

Is it Halloween already? No, not yet, although formany Hispanic immigrants things seem quite scaryin Arizona and for some in the Latino community, thestate's governor, Republican Jan Brewer, has as-sumed the role of big bad witch.

The reason: on April 23, Brewer signed into law acontroversial measure, SB 1070, which allows thepolice to detain anyone whose immigration statusmay be suspect. And playing into this, of course, isthe person's appearance.

So, you don't look the way you should in Brewer'sand the police's eyes? No problem! Because here's the solution, free of charge and readily available to anyone: theGringo Mask!

Whether you are a man or a woman, now you can boast of a perfectly acceptable image for Arizona -- you know, light skin, blond hair, blue eyes -- without having to resort to expensive bleaching creams like Sammy Sosa orMichael Jackson did, or cumbersome Joan Rivers-type plastic surgery.

And for this you may thank the leaders and the creative team of Zubi Advertising, one of the leading Hispanic adver-tising agencies in the nation, with headquarters in Miami.

"When we first heard of the law in Arizona and the effects it could have in terms of racial profiling, we discussed atthe agency what we could do about it, since we have access to media," says Michelle Zubizarreta, the agency's chiefadministrative officer and co-owner along with her brother Joe. "How can we address the issue, but do so in a cre-ative way while at the same time delivering a message?"Ergo, the mask."What caught our attention was the absurdity of this law, and the notion that we all must look a certain way," contin-ues the Cuban-American executive. "Once we talked about it, my creative team came back with the idea of the maskand the website [which went live on April 30. Twitter, Facebook and YouTube are also being used to spread theword]. Basically, this is all a satire of what is happening in Arizona."

To take part in this satire, all you have to do is go to www.gringomask.com, choose the mask that best applies to you, download for free, print it, cut it, put an elastic band around it and… bingo! New face, new immigration status!

"The spirit in which we conceived Gringo Mask," clarifies Zubizarreta, "was not to offend anyone. We wanted to starta dialogue."

Latinos, Blacksjoin fight forcivil rights in Arizona

Phoenix, Ariz. – A united front of Black and Latino Arizonansmobilized against a state law that they see as a threat to theircivil rights on Sunday, April 25, at the First Institutional BaptistChurch in downtown Phoenix. Gov. Jan Brewer signed SB 1070into law on Friday, making Arizona the first state in the nation tomake it a crime for a person to be undocumented.

More than 3,000 people demonstrated outside the state capitoland hundreds gathered at the church to protest the law. Humanrights activists, religious leaders and congressmen called forpeaceful mobilizations, boycotts and, if necessary, civil disobe-dience to stop the legislation they believe would lead to racialprofiling, unsafe communities and economic turmoil.

Several voices from the African-American community and otherethnic minorities joined the fight, sending a message of unity ata time when the state faces a divisive immigration debate.

“We here in Arizona are witnessing the historic and necessary21st century awakening of the spirit of the civil rights move-ment,” said Rev. Warren Stewart, to an audience of 300 peopleat the First Institutional Baptist Church. Other speakers includedMayor Phil Gordon and Congressman Luis Gutiérrez, D-Ill.

“Where do we go from here – chaos or community?” Stewartasked, citing the words of Martin Luther King Jr. “I offer this tobe our response: non-violent direct action.”

Stewart presented a battle plan to the audience that mirroredthe strategy the Black community in Phoenix used successfullyin 1989 to force an unwilling legislature to create a legal holidayhonoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This included an economicboycott.

The congressman said President Obama can ask U.S. AttorneyGeneral Eric Holder to seek a temporary injunction of the Ari-zona law through the courts. He is also calling on Obama tosuspend the use of a national program known as 287(g) that al-lows local police to enforce federal immigration law and has ledto lawsuits related to racial profiling.

While communities are planning actions on the ground, othersare looking to challenge the new law in the courts. The Ameri-can Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Mexican AmericanLegal and Educational Fund (MALDEF) are looking into an im-mediate legal challenge. Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon said thecity also will consider a lawsuit.

Jimmy Smits will play Cyrus Garza, a by thebook Supreme Court Justice who excuseshimself from the bench to go into privatepractice and fight constitutional injusticesin an untitled one hour NBC legal drama.Veteran Mexican actor Pedro Ar-mendariz has also been cast ashis political activist father whoinspires him. Smits will alsoserve as a co-executive pro-ducer on the series.

The pilot is currently shootingon location in Philadelphia,Washington D.C. and AtlanticCity.

Smits most recently headlinedthe short lived CBS Latino familydrama Cane. He also co-starredon NBC’s The West Wing anddid a season long arc on Show-time’s Dexter. which earnedhim his 12th Emmy Nomination (He won in1990 for L.A. Law). The former NYPD Bluestar is coming off a Broadway run in Godsof Carnage and next appears in RodrigoGarcia’s upcoming theatrical feature to bereleased in May, Mother and Child.

The NBC drama is being developed by JohnEisendrath, Universal Media Studios andConan O’Brien’s production company.

Let’s hope this pilot makes it to series. Itwould be an important step forward to see amajor Latino actor as a series lead in such apositive role as a U.S. Supreme Court Justiceand lawyer. Smits is repped by Brillstein En-

tertainment, UTA and at-torney Tom Hoberman.

"Mayor Bernero's passion for education and for Michigan'sworking families made today's decision very straightfor-ward," said MEA President Iris K. Salters. "We look forward toworking with Mr. Bernero as he travels the state speaking topublic school employees and other voters about his visionfor Michigan's public schools."

A product of public education and the husband of a public school principal, Bernero has been alongstanding supporter of public schools. During his time in the Legislature, Bernero was asteadfast supporter of adequate, equitable and stable school funding, as well as a strong de-fender of the rights of Michigan public school employees.

"When you invest in Wall Street, you don't know what you will get. But when you invest in achild, you always get a good outcome," Bernero told the committee. "Quality education iscriti-cal to Michigan's future -- because education is economic development."

MEA Votes blogAs MEA's recommended candidate, Bernero will receive the association's fullsupport in his bid to win the Democratic nomination for governor in August -- and his subse-quent race for governor in the November general election.

Decisions about MEA-recommended candidates at both the local and state levels are made byMEA members who serve on screening and recommending committees. The committee makingtoday's recommendation was representative of school employees across Michigan, includingteachers, education support professionals, higher education faculty and staff, and school re-tirees.

Grand Rapids, Mich.—First Steps today announced that theW.K. Kellogg Foundation is making a significant investment inKent County’s youngest children. The Battle Creek-basedfoundation is committing $1.3 million over the next three yearsto two programs that support the health and development ofchildren across the community: the Children’s Healthcare Ac-cess Program and Welcome Home Baby.

“We are very grateful to the W.K. Kellogg Foundationfor this tremendous investment in Kent County’s future,” saidRebekah Fennell, Executive Director, First Steps. “These pro-grams are critical to our efforts to ensure that every youngchild has the opportunity to reach his or her full potential.”

First Steps is leading a community collaboration to de-velop a system of support services for young children and theirfamilies in Kent County. The Children’s Healthcare AccessProgram and Welcome Home Baby are important componentsof that system.

The Children’s Healthcare Access Program is a community-based medical home project that is connecting low-incomechildren to quality primary healthcare. The goal is to improvehealth outcomes among children on Medicaid while better uti-lizing existing resources and decreasing costs. The programbegan in August 2008, and the early results show that it isworking. Visits to the emergency department and inpatienthospital admissions decreased significantly in the first year ofthe program.

Welcome Home Baby is a family support program that will be-come a primary gateway to Kent County’s Early ChildhoodSystem by connecting with parents in the earliest days of theirbaby’s life. All first-time parents and parents younger than 25will be offered a visit in their home from a maternal child nurse. The nurse will be able to answer questions about everythingfrom how to feed a baby to where to look for quality child care.He or she will educate parents about early childhood develop-ment and the importance of talking, reading, and playing withtheir child from infancy. Families will be offered a menu ofcommunity services, and the nurse will help them access theresources that best meet their needs. A phased implementa-tion of Welcome Home Baby is scheduled to begin this sum-mer.

This investment in Kent County’s children and families is partof a larger commitment that the W.K. Kellogg Foundation ismaking to the Grand Rapids community.

“The W.K. Kellogg Foundation is committed to creating the

conditions that ensure vulnerable children are propelled for-ward. We understand the importance of quality health careand access in reaching our mission,” said Nadia Brigham, Pro-gram Officer with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. “First Steps of-fers promising practices that will not only meet the individualchild and family needs but also influence systemic change forthe care for vulnerable children. We are particularly interestedin seeing how the work of First Steps impacts the county aswell as core neighborhoods in Grand Rapids.”

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation joins the Heart of West MichiganUnited Way, Steelcase Foundation, Frey Foundation, Douglas& Maria DeVos Foundation, Mike & Sue Jandernoa, and theEarly Childhood Investment Corporation in supporting the de-velopment of Kent County’s early childhood system.

Compelling research documents that an investment in earlychildhood development has a profound impact on both the indi-vidual and the community. It leads to higher graduation rates, lower special education costs, a better-trained workforce, a re-duction in crime, and a reduced dependency on welfare.

First Steps is a non-profit organization that is leading a com-munity initiative to develop a system of support services forKent County children, ages 0-5, and their families. First Stepsworks in partnership with the Great Start Collaborative, par-ents, county government, health systems, education systems, human service agencies, foundations and other child advo-cates. The community vision is that every young child in KentCounty will be ready to succeed in school and in life. To learnmore, please visit www.firststepskent.org.

Established in 1930, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation supportschildren, families and communities as they strengthen and cre-ate conditions that propel vulnerable children to achieve suc-cess as individuals and as contributors to the larger communityand society. Grants are concentrated in the United States,Latin America and the Caribbean, and southern Africa. For fur-ther information, please visit the Foundation’s website atwww.wkkf.org.

This Father’s Day, take a day off and spend it withthe man who gave you life. There is no need for an expensive present or a bigparty, because that’s not the point. The day is meant to celebrate the bondbetween a child and the man who will hold out his arms and assures them thateverything will be alright. It is the one day of the year designated for a fatherand child to spend together and share the memories that they’ve had, whilealso creating new ones.. June 15th is the day to thank your dad for everythinghe has done and will do, and remind him that even though it might not seemobvious, he is the most important man in your life.

Happy Father’s Day to every man who has a child and has been there to re-mind them that they are never alone.

Argentine heartthrob Diego Torres returns with his latest album, Distinto, full ofvim and vigor—just as the bracing album art suggests. The former soap operastar and Grammy nominee (for 2002's Un Mundo Diferente) offers a crisp andbalanced set of professional Latin pop, guitar-driven and heartfelt without veer-ing into the overly cloying. Joining Diego are Noel Schajris (formerly of Sin Ban-dera), Mala Rodríguez (the preëminent Spanish female MC) and Jotuel (leader ofCuban ex-pat hip-hop group Orishas). The album's first single, "Guapa," hasclimbed as high as #5 on Billboard's Latin Pop chart. Expect to hear much morefrom Torres throughout the summer.

It's estimated that 59 million Americans have a thyroid prob-lem, but the majority don't even know it yet. The thyroid, abutterfly-shaped gland located in the neck, is the mastergland of metabolism. When your thyroid doesn't function, itcan affect every aspect of your health, and in particular, weight, depression and energylevels.

Since undiagnosed thyroidproblems can dramatically in-crease your risk of obesity, heart disease, depression, anxiety, hair loss, sexual dys-function, infertility and a hostof other symptoms and healthproblems, it's important thatyou don't go undiagnosed.

You don't need to have all ofthese symptoms in order to have a thyroid problem, but hereare some of the most common signs that you may have a thy-roid condition:

10. Muscle and Joint Pains, Carpal Tunnel/Tendonitis Prob-lems.Aches and pains in your muscles and joints, weakness in thearms and a tendency to develop carpal tunnel in thearms/hands and tarsal tunnel in the legs, can all be symptomsof undiagnosed thyroid problems. (For more information)

9. Neck Discomfort/Enlargement.A feeling of swelling in the neck, discomfort with turtlenecksor neckties, a hoarse voice or a visibly enlarged thyroid can allbe symptoms of thyroid disease.

To help find out if your thyroid may be enlarged, try a simple"Thyroid Neck Check" test at home.

8. Hair/Skin Changes.Hair and skin are particularly vulnerable to thyroid conditions, and in particular, hair loss is frequently associated with thy-

roid problems. With hypothyroidism, hair fre-quently becomes brittle, coarse and dry, whilebreaking off and falling out easily. Skin can be-come coarse, thick, dry,and scaly. In hypothy-roidism, there is often an unusual loss of hair

in the outer edge of the eyebrow. Withhyperthyroidism, severe hair loss canalso occur, and skin can become fragileand thin.

7. Bowel Problems.Severe or long-term constipation is fre-quently associated with hypothyroidism, while diarrhea or irritable bowel syn-drome (IBS) is associated with hyperthy-roidism.

6. Menstrual Irregularities and FertilityProblems.

Heavier, more frequent and more painful peri-ods are frequently associated with hypothy-roidism, and shorter, lighter or infrequentmenstruation can be associated with hyperthy-roidism. Infertility can also be associated withundiagnosed thyroid conditions. (For More In-formation).

5. Family History. If you have a family history of thyroid prob-lems, you are at a higher risk of having a thy-roid condition yourself. You may not always be aware ofthyroid problems in your family, though, because amongolder people, it is often referred to as "gland trouble" or "goi-ter." So pay attention to any discussions of glandular condi-tions or goiter or weight gain due to "a glandular problem," asthese may be indirect ways of referring to thyroid conditions.

4. Cholesterol IssuesHigh cholesterol, especially when it is not responsive to diet, exercise or cholesterol-lowering medication, can be a sign ofundiagnosed hypothyroidism. Unusually low cholesterol levels

may be a sign of hyperthyroidism.

3. Depression and Anxiety.Depression or anxiety — including sud-den onset of panic disorder — can besymptoms of thyroid disease. Hypothy-roidism is most typically associated withdepression, while hyperthyroidism ismore commonly associated with anxietyor panic attacks. Depression that doesnot respond to antidepressants may alsobe a sign of an undiagnosed thyroid dis-order.

2. Weight Changes. You may be on a low-fat, low-calorie dietwith a rigorous exercise program, but arefailing to lose or gain any weight. Or youmay have joined a diet program or sup-port group, such as Weight Watchers, andyou are the only one who isn't losing anyweight. Difficulty losing weight can be asign of hypothyroidism. You may be los-ing weight while eating the same amountof food as usual — or even losing whileeating more than normal. Unexplainedweight changes and issues can be signsof both hypothyroidism or hyperthy-roidism. (For More Information)

1. Fatigue.Feeling exhausted when you wake up, feeling as if 8 or 10hours of sleep a night is insufficient or being unable to func-tion all day without a nap can all be signs of thyroid problems.(With hyperthyroidism, you may also have nighttime insomniathat leaves you exhausted during the day.) (For More Informa-tion)

If you have some of the above symptoms, make a visit toyour doctor for a thorough thyroid evaluation.
